ROG Battery life - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Hi guys just bought the ROG phone 2 a week ago, just would like to know about the Battery life? I've done all the settings recommended by the battery optimization module suchs screen brightness and screen timeout etc. I also turned off my GPS but I noticed after sleeping for 9hours or so after leaving my phone idle the battery which was initially 90% dropped to 83%. Is that normal? Cause I've seen youtube claim u can game for 3 hours and the battery will only drop by 5%. Or is that only when u turn on xmode? Also I do leave my mobile data turned on but is that enough to drain the battery to this extend?

Good word! :exposition
Can't shed any light on your query, but can add, if have data/reception switched on, it will consume more or less depending on your signal strength as it searches for the strongest source. So it'll vary user to user.
If not informative... Oh well, at least, I had some input lol

Thanks any input is better than none at all. So it's relatively normal that my battery drains 8 - 10 percent when idle? It's because of the signal strength? It doesn't really bother me much but I would just like to make sure that's it's within the norm and not faulty battery or something

Doubt its a faulty battery. And no doubt there are more factors involved than only signal strength, but yeah, signal strength does play a part in it. It might not make too much difference while your at home ie in one place, but you're on the move as the phone goes in and out of stronger or weaker signal areas, the phone has to keep scanning for the best possible connection, which consumes more battery.
I haven't noticed a great deal of difference running latest A10 update (2004.60) compared to A9, but others favour A9 for better battery. Which version are you on? Some say latest A10 is on par with A9, others disagree. Each to their own!
Personally I don't monitor it religiously, so not sure what my percentage drop per hour or over a given time frame is, so I can't advise you on that.
Battery for me lasts about 2 days with some to spare and a fair amount of usage. I only play Bike Race, I'm not a hardcore gamer. That's good enough for me and similar to what it was on A9. Not too sure of screen on time
Edit: actually, just noticed my battery is at 11 percent, the screenshot should give you a fair idea of what to expect... Obviously, I varies on apps installed /in use too. There's probably more factors, not too sure

Thanks it does clear up some things and also I'm on A9 but u've mentioned battery lasts for 2days? Is your mobile data turned on? Frankly I've noticed my battery does tend to drop faster when mobile data is turned on so it might be as u've mentioned about mobile data and the signal strength. Although I don't really get out much since the entirety of the outside world looks straight outta fallout 4. But find it hard to believe the phone just drop 5 percent of battery after 3 hours of intensive gaming( according to youtube anyway ) considering it drops way below that point even when idle.

Yes, the signal strength from your mobile network operator does affect the battery consumption.. I've noticed this when I am at remote areas.. It's plausible for the 5% drop in battery during gaming if you have turned on the airplane mode..

I have been using the ROGPHONE 2 since January 2020. Only way the battery is draining faster than it should are 2 reasons.
1st is there is a defect.
2nd is weak cellular signal.

Your issue is most likely one (or more) of a few things:
If you're on Android 10, which in my experience has battery drain and heating issues (that's why I downgraded to Android 9)
You have some frequent wakelocks that are keeping the phone awake and draining your battery (if you have root, or don't mind rooting, flash Kirisakura kernel and install EX Kernel Manager to see the top wakelocks)
You have apps in the background that are auto-starting and taking up network bandwidth, even when your phone is idle (check under Settings > Battery > PowerMaster > Auto-start manager and disable the apps which you don't rely on for constant notifications)
Hope that helps you.

Rural area... City outskirts? Sounds fun. Stop playing with the phone. Enjoy life.
Only phone i have used before and doesn't seem to drain because of weak cellular signal is the Huawei P30 Pro. Then my current ROGPHONE 2... Owh wait you want to see weak cellular signal kill a phone really fast? Get a Note 10+.... Gets killed in 3 hours. Lmao.

[Q] What to do Against battery drain?

I now have one week to the Nexus One bought secondhand. It suits me perfectly stand alone I have a little trouble with the battery life of the phone. Morning when the phone is 100% and I come out of school (14:30 hours) the battery is still around 20%. I find this a bit short. Ok, I'll use him at school (bit Internet, twitter refreshes every 9 minutes)
There is an automatic task killer, and that helps a bit but I think there are about 80% after 8 hours battery life is a bit much. Me internet is also constantly and I really like to keep.
The battery is probably not because I've got 2 batteries and they both give the same result.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
I've been a bit inet searched but not really found anything. I did see somewhere a separate battery behind the phone, but I'm not waiting because that makes him a bit heavier and uglier.
10% per hour is pretty poor battery life. Are you running stock Android? 3rd party firmwares can give you much better battery life (the latest versions of CyanogenMod are using less than 1% per hour when fully idle).
But there are things you can check. Have you looked in Settings -> About phone -> Battery usage? If you are using Gingerbread and you look at the graph, if there is a solid line (or mostly solid) next to the "awake" portion, it means that your phone isn't properly entering its low powered state. Download spare parts from the market and check out partial wake usage under the battery history section of that app.
Please post your screen on time value from the battery menu so we can see how long your screen is on.
I would say to go and disable background data. Disabling this will definitely improve your battery life. Of course, you aren't going to get you twitter updates but aside from that, the battery life should improve.

While it is true that battery life would improve if Background Data was disabled (or limited via a program like Juice Defender), it doesn't take into account his actual problem. Unless it is a ton of apps constantly downloading that is keeping his battery usage in the toilet, this will only yield a slight improvement. I believe the cause is is an app (or apps) that prevent his phone from entering the low powered sleep state.
I don't know what stock Android gets from completely idle use (haven't run it since July last year), but a basic CyanogenMod install would sip between 1-2% per hour with the latest stable and the latest nightlies, some are reporting 1% every 2-3 hours when the phone is left alone (due to a fix that lets the microphones go into a deep sleep state).
Twitter refreshing every 9 minutes can not be helping, that said I doubt that's your entire issue but reducing the refresh rate should help quite a bit.
If you bought it used, it could be a bum battery. Not sure i know what apps work best to find out that info. Anybody?

The battery app in my sig is the only one that reads the chip inside your battery to tell if it's legit or not, what the battery age is, etc. Needs root to work though.

Best or ideal kernel settings for best battery life with good performance?

The title explains it all—I'm wondering what the best kernel settings are to achieve the best battery life without completely dropping performance. I've never tweaked the kernel on any phone I've owned before, so I have no idea what those settings might be. I currently get around 5-6 hours of SOT, which is great for heavy usage but with a battery those huge we should expect way more.
I'm currently playing around with majorly under clocking the CPU (Currently testing at 1.2 GHz) and have yet to notice a difference in performance. I'll update with battery improvements if any arise.

im on zzmove with profile 6, run only 2 core at 2.4Ghz and every thing seem good
phone run cool and great in game(framerate still good and more stable since no throttling at all, before that with stock, my phone get hot and lag if i play asphat for long) not sure about battery yet but seem good
Try computerfreak ROM, i'm getting 77 hrs on battery and 6 SOT!
Oops just now noticed I had replies.
I'm currently running Resurrection Remix and I seem to be getting better battery life than I was on stock, which is odd; however, I wish to get more. Update me on those kernel settings.
Also I noticed that when I'm at school the cellular signal drains my battery considerably. The signal there is poor, is there any way I can minimize the drainage?

That's a ridiculously easy thing to do, I can't believe I didn't think of this. However, its rather inconvenient. Any other ways? I heard back in 4.4.4 that there was a way to disable certain bands or something to consume less power when you have bad signal.

I'm on rr and honestly I'm not getting the best battery. Like 3.5 hour on screen time. It does still make it through the day though. I changed the kernel settings to conservative under cpu, which helped a lot from previously getting under 3.

Settings, configs, performance tuning, kernal tweaks, then in the app in the cpu tab, the cpu governor option. That's where I found it and I turned it down and I'm getting better battery.
That's odd. I get considerable better battery life on RR than I did on stock. I've hit 5.5 and even 6 hours of SOT with heavy to medium use (when I'm not at school at least).
Same here, but I noticed it lasts much longer with Greenify and Amplify installed with Xposed. I lose about 2-3% during standby mode during the night....whereas before I lost about 10-15% even while on RR.
Just got 7HR and 4 mins screen on time with in 2 days didnt use my phone at school only when i was at home so i guess 7hr's is good..
EDIT: i am on stock ROM

That sounds right about what stock should be getting for some users. It's good to reference stock with your personal use versus someone else.
1 hour of a playing a game with full brightness will use significantly more battery than an hour of book reading on night move although they both technically have the same screen on time.

I usually consistently got about 5 hours and 30 minutes of screen on time on stock with medium to heavy usage at school and at home.
On Resurrection Remix, I usually get 5 or sometimes 5 and a half or 6 hours, with heavy usage at home. On school days, I can only manage to get around 3, which I find incredibly odd. I chalk it up to the poor signal at my school draining my battery.

You can get 48 hrs on the Turbo. You can also get 5 hrs. Like I said before, it all depends on your personal usage. Perhaps they have a baseline test they do on every phone so there's no variable aside from battery.

the battery life

What really is up with Android phone and their battery life. This been bugging me for like forever and its 4:00 AM and i have to post.
Like my sister had s7 edge and just the general messenger apps IG, WhatsApp, telegram & Weechat. Rest are game for toddler. But all the time the phone been with her, her average SOT is like four hours and the BATTERY KEEPS ON DRAINING on Wi-Fi or Data and NEVER flats out. It only does when in airplane mode. Before you guys days uninstall the games, in the battery usage graph same with GSAMbattery, Android system is like up all the time. So it has to do with Android OS.
is Android really just like this? Do iPhones person better?
I have EXACTLY the same issue with my nexus 6 rooted. When my wifi is up, none stop drain and BBS doesn't show any unusual activity.
What going on guys?

With 4 hours screen on time that is about what you can expect. Mainly when using things like weechat which is notorious for uploading all it data over and over again to its servers in China. Then you have whatsapp which is done by facebook which are known for some of the worst coded apps for battery drain in the market.
Your biggest issue is the screen on time. $ hours is a bit ruff on a device. As the screen is the biggest thing to take up battery. Unlike the iphone which uses a less intense screen due to its lower quality res.

Bro, you should use an iPhone and see! It's much worse than Android. iPhone have less size batteries and you can hardly get through the entire day with one charge according to your usage. Although apple's implementation of background apps optimization is excellent, but still the battery life is less due to small batteries. I feel android is much better in terms of battery.

You can add that android is still an open system which allows you to hard modify the system, apps behavior, etc.. So you can set your device especially for your daily use.
For example, the way I set my 2yo-phone gives me 8 to 10 hours SOT, which is faaaar from any Apple devices autonomy..

So my question is, can the voice detection+voice commands be less energy-consuming than the touch-sensitive commands ? (while keeping an active detection)

No it's really mostly just the screen being on. You can test this by setting the device screen to never time out and let it sit. You will notice that it kills the battery.

It's always Android System

That is generic which means apps system api or systems the app uses. Like say the LG tones app. It uses the system BT api and if it drains the battery then all you see is BT at the top.
After years of trial with all sorts of applications to kill apps, battery /juice saves, my ultimate solution on Samsung alpha, 1800amph only battery is conjuction of Greenify, follow up with SD Maid. Alternate day.
Excellent results. I'm rooted.

I'd say that you either have a battery that is past it's useful life, or you have some serious wakelocks going on. 2-2.5 hours SOT is awful. I bought my device used 9 months ago and can easily average 6-8 hours SOT over the course of 48 hours on battery (on stock 7.0 unrooted). I'm only now seeing a lower SOT with this current update to Google Play Services. And even now I still get 5-6 hours SOT in 48 hours.

I know the reason for my bad battery life. It's my signal. Signal here is spotty and if you leave town you lose signal all together. So my device spends most of the day looking for a stronger signal. SOT really doesn't mean much to me.

Ah yeah, well there is that as well. Have you tried turning off LTE and preffering 3G? I've found that helps in some fringe areas.

Yeah I normally keep late off. It doesn't help really. Signal is just too spotty. You can bounce between 2g,3g and lte in 5 min and never move. Then you have the times when the military blocks all GPS and unless you heard the announcement and turned GPS off that would also kill your battery. Then like I said once you leave town you have no signal for hundreds of miles.

We would need more info before we could really explain it. For starters though it looks like bluetooth is sucking the life out of your battery. Do you have something connected to it currently?
As far as my screen on time goes, im on the pixel rom with no addons and i get 4 hours screen on time

How is 6-8 hours sot possible over 48 hours? I've tried different kernels, lineage/CyanogenMod, Pure Nexus, greenify, and even tried down clocking the CPU to 1.2 GHz or less at all times (shockingly, in normal use I couldn't tell the difference lol). Never got that much screen on time. I'm not even sure airplane mode would do that. My best was around 45 hours, but with about 3 hours of screen on time. And that was with the phone being less than 3 months old.
Currently I'm on stock Android, and getting 20 hours at best with 3 hours sot. At this point, I will say my battery is shot since it is a year old. But I'd love to see your settings and see if I could get close.

Here are screenshots of my battery use from March. 3 days with 6.5 hours SOT. I keep my screen at a relative 20% or so (lower at night). I have very strong signal (major city) And I use wifi about 65-70% of the time. I also actively moderate my screen touches (yes, they do indeed matter). I turn off NFC and I don't use BT. I also actively purge misbehaving apps (I refuse to install some, like Facebook) Other than this, I can't really say. Perhaps, I just lucked out and got a cherry of a system (with the exception of my headphone jack not working with mics...Grrr... and my camera's image stabilization Causing blur at certain shutter speeds)

Mi 9 great battery life

I've had my device for a day now and I was worried at first weather the 3300mah battery would last a day's use and I can gladly say this device is optimised very well.
With 4hours of on screen time with 50% battery left this device has met my expectations and further.
I've hardly come of this phone all day.
So for me it's a thumps up if anyone is worried about battery life it should be perfectly fine for a day+ use.

I've actually so far experienced the opposite today I had under 3 hours SOT and was at around 35%, though I did notice that high accuracy was enabled as well as WiFi scanning.
Will continue to monitor....
Screen on Time is a meaningless figure to judge battery life.
For instance - Browsing the web will drain way more battery life than watching a YouTube video
Th thing is with the MI9 auto brightness is way to aggressive.
If you use lot of outside it will drain lot faster than indoors.
Indoors 6 till 7 hours SOT no problem. Lot of outside 5 till 6 hours or. Something like that.

I've had it on manual
What I have noticed is when I was outdoors, there was some sort of outdoor mode being activated, so not the auto brightness but the automatic contrast. Got it in standard now and so will see how tomorrow on a full charge. Still though, I could swear that colours (the black theme on my SwiftKey keyboard) were adjusting in bright sunlight.
Will indeed keep an eye on this, but yeah so far battery is a let down, and that has been with full 4g signal, Bluetooth off etc
A friend sell his Mi9 after 3 days. With 2 sim cards and 50/50 wifi/lte he get about ~5h SOT without gaming and youtube after <1day.
With Youtube he can get easy 8h SOT but thats normal for Amoled.

I'm gonna report it as a bug.
Also as Cell Standby drain is high, I've just adjusted this setting, found here:

To add at my SOT I use the MI9 in dark mode all the time.

Quick update: seems better already since i changed those settings. Got 30 mins SOT and still at 95%.
Will see how the rest of the day goes!
Hi,
I think something is wrong with the Cell standby usage.
I tried the fix for disabling Chinese antennas, but still it's like this.
https://imgur.com/a/EZD8Xmt
I'm on China version (I bought the mobile in China actually).
Any advice? Shall I switch to Global?
And it looks like that auto brightness seems to consume more battery than manual, is it just for me or something for more people?

I too had the bad drain but switching to LTE/WCDMA helped me so far I think.
I'm at 60% 2 hours SOT and I've been taking lots of photos, such switching that setting helped lots!
My brightness is on auto and seems to adapt pretty well I thought.
WiFi scanning is off.
And I don't have dark mode enabled.
Not much gaming tho but YouTube streaming.
Coming from OnePlus 6t and pixel 3 I'm doing the same things but noticing better battery life so for the 3300mah I think it's doing pretty well indeed I'm very satisfied
I never use auto brightness except when I want to use my phone in full sun (beach..) to activate the boost brightness.
My sot is 6 hours by day. Very good (level of the $9 /$9 plus).

Is this not happening with the Mi9?

It does. Hopefully it will get fixed in a future update in GLOBAL roms...
I have just updated to Global 10.2.26.0 ROM from 10.2.24.0 and I'm getting over 9hrs screen on time! I'm getting over 17-20 hrs with that screen on time so I would say it's doing great! I watch a good bit of movies and YouTube on it as well as do a lot of pictures and video. Do I do use it rather hard and get those numbers still!
Im on a PFAEUXM rom, i've found that the battery life is good when you are using the phone, i'm geussing the screen and the CPU are really efficient, but the standby drain when i don't use the phone is pretty bad..

Dude I just got 31hrs with 6hrs and 23 min SOT and I didnt even let it die. I use a lot of photography, video [email protected] I also watch a lot of movies and in-between I do a good bit of YouTube or Twitter.
I can get over 9hrs easy anytime. If I just got for maximum SOT I've passed 11hrs many times and never ran the Mi 9 dead. I mean sometimes it's within a few % but I always put it back on charge if that's the case.
I leave the brightness on auto but it seems I always have to go in the menu and push it higher to my liking.
Now understand this. This is mostly indoors except for when I'm shooting video. I never take it off auto brightness, I just push it up. I have it on increased contrast. Nothing more. I optimize it at least once a day and I clean my Cached file daily. That is the extent of what I do. I have accubattery app on it so I watch to make sure it truly is at 100% before taking it off.
I have no issues with SOT, oh and I always have WiFi on as well.
You say you get 6hrs but only 6hrs SOT with no combined time with it?

Question Battery Life, expectations?

Hi all,
As you know, I got this device a couple of weeks ago as a upgrade (birthday pressie).... and on the whole, I am might impressed with it. Compared to previous phones, this is awesome....
However, one odd thing I am experiencing... is battery life? Whilst I read reports of this device and the other I was looking at, Note 10 5G. Both had 5000mah batteries, and reviews RAVED about how good battery life is in them. Some even saying it can be used as a Battery Bank to charge other peoples phone.
However in actual use of the phone, I'm afraid to use it... for merely tapping a few icons, browsing web and running/opening camera... I literally am watching the percentages drain... I thought this thing would be rock solid, and can generally browse/mess around and the battery will slowly decrease...?
Don't get me wrong, if I don't touch it and leave it in standby it will claim to last at least a couple of days... or that said, running it as SatNav and not touching the screen on a 30min drive, it didn't drain the battery at all and stayed at 100% (which did surprise me).
But to me, what appears as light use, tapping icons and surfing around see's it draining fairly quickly. I dread to think if I was playing a high end game, it will prolly be gone in 5 mins.... Good job I don't do games... lol
Cheers, Lister
Morning Lister .. ya got your paddling pool ready for tomorrow lol
Mines been quite doing the same playing with gcam ( I haven't uploaded the XML yet , reming me to do it later ).
I have noticed the battery draining quicker when the screens set to 90mhz , as I've read elsewhere that seems quite normal as the phone has to refresh the screen faster than it would on 60 . Signal strength can be detrimental too , a bad signal means the phone tries harder to pull it in and uses more battery in the process .
When I've finally got everything set up I'll see how long I can get on a charge , still got to copy me 3 stooges collection on to it , all 65gb of it

I think this phone has 90hz refresh rate, not 120mhz. Maybe u wrote it by mistake.
Hi The Mero,
Oh don't, I am not a sun lover at the best of times and these last few days/week's been killing me... lol.
I am, as we speak, practicing my Snow Dance !!! ;-) LOL
Yeah, seems odd that a camera can zap that much battery. I get it has to do a couple of things, active viewfinder, take the pic and then use processing power to render the output. But after reading all the rave reviews, this battery will last you into the next pandemic and all that... It to me, just seems to drain a little too quickly for my liking. I was expecting to get some fun time, without watching the battery drain down...
I think this screen can only go to 90mhz, but that said... I even have my set to the standard 60mhz. I not really played around with it, but it seems quick enough for me at 60mhz and every bit of battery helps. Like being in a heatwave and keeping ya aircon off, whilst sitting at the traffic lights with windows open... Gotta save that fuel/battery... ;-) lol
I did look at battery drain, and Mobile Standby did seem high, which is odd as its never been an issue with my older phones in same location. I'll keep an eye on that though, cheers....

"Cell Standby" battery drain on latest MIUI Global 13.0.12?
Hi, everyone. I bought a Redmi Note 11 Global a few days back and while setting it up, I was amazed at the battery life. It was at 56% when I opened it up, and throughout the entire setup process and after around 5 or 6 hours of screen on time, I...
forum.xda-developers.com
That said, I do have Calls over WiFi enabled, as it's the first time i've owned a phone that supports and is now available on my plan (PAYG lol). So I enabled it, just to try it out... lol
But apparently, this can be a zapper and cause the Cell Standby issue. Might try disabling it, and see if Battery Life improves....
Cheers, Lister
I'm on PAYG too , I turn off internet calling ( volte ) I had an issue on the X3 where you could hear the other person but they couldn't hear you . Some said it was a flaky mic and some said volte ( another name for it ) . Anyways I knocked it off and calls were fine after that . So if you start getting the same issue give that a try . Plus battery issues could be down to the CPU not behaving . Russian forum had some with the CPU stuck at full throttle while others were stuck at lowest speed . All using different miui versions or custom ROMs , this is getting worse every time we read about it
This phone is in need of a custom kernel. I think the default CPU/GPU governor is not properly optimised. We don't want the CPU to fire up all its cores and constantly hit 2.4Ghz while playing candy crush.
Also, MIUI 13 is so restrictive and bland. We are losing controls and features with each new update.
This amazing hardware needs a divorce from its retarded software.

In my case, the amazing hardware broke up with its retarded software and is currently married to this chick named Pixel Experience. The experience is way way smooth and is something we and the hardware totally deserves. Though yes we really need a custom kernel, I don't know why Xiaomi hasn't released kernel sources for this device until now

Same here, unlocked bootloader and currently on Evolution X. Though all google apps and services are debloated so basically vanilla. I get 10 hrs screen on time with about 40 hrs standby
Hi All,
The battery on this device is really really shocking.... as in shockingly bad !!!
When I read about 5000mah ( basically double anything I've had prior ) and how good the reviews for battery life were on these devices. I had high hopes, I thought Id be able to tap away, causally wasting hours watching pointless YouTube and whatnot...
However here I am, re-arranging icons.... Configuring Applications (TruePhone and it's GAZZILION options), and watching the percentages just drop off, one by one by one.... I bet if I put a chocolate egg outside in this heatwave, it will melt at a slower rate than the battery drains...
Admittedly, I do have a few Apps on it... but no more than when I look at other peoples phones and it's not like I am putting heavy/tasking apps on. No gaming apps or anything like that... And to watch it go from 100 to 70 in what I think is a short time, is somewhat depressing...
I'll have to charge the ole 5000mah phone up and carry a couple 20,000mah at this rate... lol.
I've even de-bloated some of the system Apps in background... I may treat it to another wipe/reset and test it with barely any load and see what happens...
Cheers, Lister

I've had that issue on my Note 5 as well, and apparently I was not alone and it was in fact an issue that was introduced with Android 10. Turning off VoLTE did work for me, but that of course entailed a significantly worse call quality. I ended up switching to a different carrier and the problem went away. Sucks to see that the issue can still arise on current handsets.
I had a note 5 too , I can't remember if it did it or not, but I switched to a Moto g7 power and it did it on there too . I think your right about the network. I'm on 3 in the UK and never thought of the network being at fault , cheers for that
