[GUIDE] OTA on TWRP - Redmi Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

i saw an update on Redmi Note 8T (11.0.9).
I'm rooted with TWRP, so I just tried to update. New update was downloaded into directory downloaded_rom.
phone was automatically rebooted into TWRP, but I didnt know there is update in that directory. I just rebooted device into system.
I got a message that update failed. I click update and started to look for file/folder created during download process. So i discovered directory downloaded_rom in root folder.
phone was automatically rebooted into recovery (twrp) and it was flashing update without my help.
after reboot, device was updated. the only thing to do was flash TWRP (i have paid version of TWRP) and flash magisk.
everything works fine and my phone is rooted on 11.0.9.
i thing, that second file was whole ROM (1.9GB)

in my personal experience, if you get rebood to twrp, flash Disable Dm Verity ForceEncrypt to boot into rom

Was Magisk installed before the update? Since you are saying it rebooted to TWRP without you knowing, were you able to restore stock images before updating? Could you also provide information concerning the update? For example, miui version (updating from vXXX to vXXX)

Was Magisk installed before the update? - yes, device was rooted, with Magisk installed
were you able to restore stock images before updating - dont understand this, after downloading update and clicking on install, device was rebooted into twrp
miui version (updating from vXXX to vXXX) - update from 11.0.7.0 to 11.0.9.0

What I meant was whether you uninstalled Magisk/restored original boot img prior to the update because sometimes not doing so tends to result in bootloop (happened to me before). I needed some information before I attempt the update myself. Thank you for replying.
P.S. One more question: All data was preserved, right?

[Q] how to update after rooting (magisk) ?

Hello
I was on B180 (PRA-LX1C432) rooted with magisk
No updates available in settings/update firmware, but connecting to PC HiSuite B194 appeared (which seems to be for Honor 8 lite by the way). It downloaded it, pushed it to phe phone, but when rebooting it goes to twrp... so obviously I'm still on B180
I imagine we have to flash back stock recovery before updating ? And then twrp again, magisk flash, etc ?
Thanks !
About OTA over magisk I found that on P9 forum:
1) unroot by Magisk Uninstaller, find the download link in the post https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...63&postcount=1
2) flash from TWRP original stock boot img
3) wipe Dalwik and Cache from TWRP
3) flash from fastboot original stock recovery
4) let it make OTA update but select in the System Update settings to use Full (not differential) update - it will not delete your apps and settings
maybe the safest way indeed...
But as I "catch" the full ota, maybe I can use fastboot to flash only system and boot, and the reflash magisk to patch new boot img ?
anyone ?
Nobody updated after root ??
Ok, this is what I did and happened:
- In TWRP, flash magisk uninstaller script: ERROR 1. After reboot magisk was still here. That was a bad start...
- So I opened magisk app, click Uninstall and then Complete Uninstall. After that I made a reboot as asked, and device rebooted twice.
- Then, went to download mode and flashed stock recovery. And reboot.
- Then went to settings/updates/download latest full ota. It downloaded but refused to start the install process claiming to free up more than 900MB... Nothing on my internal sdcard so I had to uninstall some apps... cool !
- Then it reboot and installed the update
- First boot took a while, I still have "this device cannot be trusted" on start, and OEM unlock in settings is grayed and ON, so I think the bootloader is still unlocked
- Theme and wallpapers were reset with the update
For now I don't have flashed back twrp neither magisk .
In the meantime have you flashed TRWP and Migistik ? And again: do you have still to update your signature or something went wrong in installing fw B194.
Lastly: what do you mean by "went to download mode and flashed"...

[SOLVED] TWRP bootloop after OTA update from Global V10.2.1.0 (PEAMIXM) with Magisk

Hello guys,
Yesterday I flashed my Mi 8 to get root permissions with Global V10.2.1.0 with Magisk 17.3, including Disable DM-Verity and Force Encrypt. Everything was working perfect, Magisk notified me about updating to v18, so I did, and MIUI notified me about an update (if I'm not mistaken, for 10.2.2.0).
MIUI downloaded the update and asked me to reboot to install it. It booted into TWRP and did the whole installation, apparently without issues, but then I restarted and it goes straight to TWRP.
I tried clearing cache/dalvik but nothing.
Every time I reboot and gets to TWRP, when I press the menu button to see the log, the last lines say:
Full SELinux support is present.
set_policy_failed:/datamisc
I don't know if this is relevant, but seeing a "failed" is not nice.
As an observation, the folder /data/system is full of folders, but the /system directly in root folder only has /usr/share/zoneinfo (I don't know if this is normal or not),
If the system updated to 10.2.2.0, would flashing to 10.2.1.0 set the ARB or it's safe for me to flash it again? Any ideas?
Thanks!
You need to flash Magisk again. Installing an OTA means you flash the stock boot.img so flash dm verity and magisk.

Thanks for the answer! Do I need to wipe DATA too?
EDIT: I just flashed DM-Verity and then Magisk and all good. No need to wipe data. Thanks!!

I never used it for root my device.

As of OOS 9.5.10 you can boot twrp by fastboot, then sideload twrp into both slots and finally flash magisk which patches the boot.img itself. Thus no need for patched boot.img anymore.
Does this work for the global version??
Patched boot.img is a silly way of rooting... If someone uses the wrong boot.img for their version it will fail to boot. Plus, booting TWRP and flashing the magisk zip is faster and more reliable

The only difference between the global and the EU versions are supposed to be the LTE bands.

Sorry for asking but I wanna root mine as soon as it comes. So if you install TWRP and flash with magisk the OTAs won't be broken?

I get still offered OTAs by the system. However I prefer to use Oxygen Updater app from Play Store to download it and flash directly in TWRP.

Oh cool. So like "dirty flashing". Will magisk also get killed in the proccess? I'm not sure how A/B partitions work. Do you just install magisk from twrp or do you have to somehow install it on both partitions?

I seem to have lost my root after I did the update for 9.5.11 this morning
Here is what I did
I did as stated
Download update, Install, DO NOT REBOOT
Went to Magisk, unistalled all modules, then did OTA Install
Rebooted
Went to Magisk installed TWRP, but my phone froze at that point and the screen turned all white and just sat there
So I clicked on the power button and rebooted
Got back into my phone and checked to see if I was still rooted via root checker app and now it says I AM NOT ROOTED
What can I do to fix this I can launch Magisk, but now it says its is not installed on the screen, so I click install, download the ZIP option
It says Select Method, Download ZIP ONLY which I did or Select and Patch a File which I am not sure what file I need to use?
How can I get my root back on the phones
I am on NOW on 9.5.11 GM 1917
Thanks all

If you don't need TWRP, first booting it and flashing the zip takes way longer than "fastboot flash boot boot.img".

Redmi Note 8T (willow, EEA) update to 11.0.5.0

Hey guys,
I just bought the phone yesterday and already updated to the current EEA (PCXEUXM) version (11.0.3.0).
Today I found out in OTA that a new update (11.0.5.0) is available, here's a changelog:
Optimized system performance
Improved system security and stability
Yet to update, so can't check what security update is this, or if anything changed in this.
(EDIT: Now added the screenshot.)
Just wanted to share.
hi, I just tried to install this update and now system doesn't boot
the phone was unlocked and rooted with magisk
no backup
what do?

Is it rebooting to recovery?
I have the same problem. I have version 11.0.3.0 and I have the opportunity to upgrade to 11.0.6.0. I restored the factory miui recovery, removed root magisk (message about the lack of backup stock boot), after updating the phone does not start - the phone enters recovery. I've also flashed Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt before with magisk. I also updated the phone via TWRP but then I have a lot of battery consumption after such an update. How to update the phone correctly? I suspect magisk has something to do with this.

twrp > wipe > format data(don't go to advanced) > type yes(will format whole internal storage so make sure you have a backup copied to PC)
Go back to twrp home > reboot > recovery(don't reboot system)
now flash magisk and Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt.
Make sure to flash Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt at last.

I know how to fix this bootloop. I don't know how to install the update on the system with magisk and dm verify, so that there is no bootloop again.

Miui 12 QFKEUXM

Received an update today , if i use standart ota updater via settings, does it overwrite the twrp and root stuff i have or it wont? Coz i never done this before, always using custom roms and now latest stock miui 11 with root.
You could flash the zip rom through the recovery, but keep in mind this. Let the phone boot with the new update, then go back to recovery (if you get the stock recovery, reflash it with fastboot), then flash magisk
So it is overwriting twrp and magisk even if i install it directly from twrp?

You will loose Magisk/root but not Magisk Manager app and all Magisk data like modules, apps granted root, etc - once you re-root, everything will be there again.
I only suggest that you first un-hide Magisk Manager (if hidden for you), at the end you can hide it again
If you update via OTA, you will loose TWRP. If you don't want to flash TWRP again, then download the same full MIUI 12 zip package you got OTA notification for, and flash it from TWRP (without wiping, formatting or so), and immediately thereafter reboot first back to TWRP, and only then to MIUI 12
If you would like to update truly by OTA, you would have to flash the stock recovery back before starting the OTA.
Hence the way as described above, you save first on flashing stock recovery, and later on flashing TWRP back
Ok thanks so after twrp flash i have to reboot back to twrp , do i have to install force encrypt then to prevent overwriting twrp by miui or not?
