No FOTA updates after re-locking the bootloader (offline method) - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Long ago, I unlocked my bootloader using EDL mode (offline mode) to preserve warranty. Even after unlocking the bootloader, I still received FOTA updates, but the updates just didn't get installed properly and showed an error.
I recently re-locked my bootloader using the same EDL offline method and it was locked successfully, but suddenly I'm not able to receive FOTA updates. It says I'm at the latest version, while I'm on Android 9 1910.64 (latest is A10 2004.60 at this time)
Edit: The ROM variant is WW. I never changed it to CN. Phone was shipped with WW and has remained that way ever since (Indian version btw)
Does this mean ASUS has identified the changed state of my bootloader? Or do I have to make some changes in my phone? I've tried factory resetting, flashing RAW 1910.64 twice, and still no luck. (But I'm not sure if the ROM is flashed on both slots)
I need this warranty because I'm about to send the phone for repair. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Well this only a guess but... Is it a Tencent version that was running CN rom, which then was converted to WW? My guess is that, if it is currently on WW still, you won't get OTA's until its back to its original state ie on a CN rom...
Perhaps!

Oh I totally forgot to include it sorry. This is a proper WW phone, shipped with WW ROM (Indian version). No links with CN version.

Do correct me if I am wrong, but at least in the USA, the carrier has to push out OTA updates to your phone. So if you have a less well known android, such as the ROG 2, you won't get *any* updates as it is inconvenient for the carrier to make them available. Only google's phones get updates direct, and are still subject to carriers delaying release for...reasons.

hi buddy. we are on the same page. after .64, for some reason i also didnt get the android 10 ota. the solution i see is that you download the full firmware from asus website and update manually. once on a10, youll recieve otas.
weird thing thou, i recently tried unlocking via official app, but im getting errors.

Does Unlocking Bootloader disable OTA updates?

I've gone through the process of entering my IMEI and serial number in the EMUI bootlocker website and its given me a code.
I haven't yet done any further steps including the adb commands required to remove the blootlock.
However I can now see on the MT Huawei Firmware update list that there is a new update (128) and I'm on (120b)
I've tried using the VPN option to force the update to obtain the firmware from its own servers to no avail.
The firmware checker simply states the firmware isn't compatible with device.
..has somehow simply registering caused it to be blocked for future updates?
##Secondly##.. Does continuing the process and using abd unblock commands cause it to no longer work with OTA?
Or is it only when and if you root it - that OTA can not work? (or does it work)
Quite confused and would really appreciate any advice as ideally I would like to keep OTA, but have root at sometimes with the hope that I could disable root anytime a OTA updates comes available and then re-enable after.
Any advice greatly appreciated )

It is NOT related with unlocked bootloader or rooted firmware.
It's related with emui 8.1 version whitch is NOT supported by FirmwareFinder.
So basically VPN or Proxy wont work with that.
Another thing: the firmwares listed on FF aren't approved at appearance date. This means that we must wait a bit for approval, and after that can FF download the selected firmware (again, emui 8.1 is not supported).
If you are in hurry with flashing the new firmwares, you can via TWRP (methods described on forum).
BUT be aware, that even with that you can brick your phone
(trust me: after 2 days, when i brought my phone, it was hardbricked... i haven't other choice but RMA, and obviously they have changed the phone. SO be very careful.)

Have you used this before? On the P20 Pro?
Only reason i ask is the P20 Pro is not listed on the supported devices and as i said you would need to have the correct firmware for your device, the newer firmwares are made for the European version of the device L29 not L09, so providing you're on L29 and it's the correct firmware then it should work, but i would not like to be the person to crash test this.
I'm on the L09 which doesn't take L29 firmwares unless i debrand and then try it.
I have CLT-L29C432B128. (I have updated with hurupdater since the 128 fw is not yet approved from firmware finder)
I thinking on try flashing cn firmware.

Thanks for the advice!
So the list if updates that firmware finder shows are upcoming updates - rather than being released for offical OTA distrubtion from the date listed?
If firmware finder gets it first I'm wondering if you know generally when the OTA updates start to be pushed out via the OTA update system?
I don't know.
Generally about 2-3 weeks (maybe less).

Can I/Should I update to newer WW ROM?

New WW ROM showing up on Asus US site. I've downloaded it to my phone but not installed it. Any reason not to? Any idiosyncrasies I should be aware of if I do the install like having to reinstall all apps again bc I did it manually? Will there every be ota with WW ROM?
Cheers. Currently at Scarefest in Lexington. Sorry for delaying in replies.

Hello,
i'm not an expert in this but will provide info from what i have gazed from you post, are you currently on WW rom or CN Rom, i'm guessing you bought Tencent version with CN Rom. The asus support web page is providing boot-loader unlock & Firmware imgs, but can only be used to convert from WW=>WW or CN=>CN Rom as written in more information.
once you unlock you bootloader you have to re-lock to get OTA updates, you can get more info in ASUS ROG Phone II Guides, News, & Discussion.
Hope this helps.
ZS660KL software Image:WW_V16.0622.1907.33 for WW only*
Improved Item:
1. Added three ROG live wallpapers
2. Light Luminous Core theme supports live wallpaper effect
3. Fixed the issue where occasionally can not turn on WiFi hotspot
Steps of Update:
1. Check software version of your device**
2. Download device software and Update SOP (From “Manual” Item)
3. Only apply to same SKU update, Example: WW->WW, CN->CN, TW->TW.
4. Software update cannot transfer the software SKU and downgrade the software version.
5. Wrong SKU may cause update failure, please update the same SKU version only.

Tencent 8/128, yes.
I have a WW out of the box, but bc SafetyNet is fails on first boot and after a fdr, it is believed that the seller flashed WW over CN.
My concern was that I didn't want to update with the updated WW if I have to keep re installing or restoring apps, or if I had to jump through hoops each time I'm now looking to see how I can prove that the phone was reflashed to WW by the seller so I can return it. I need banking and Google pay to work. SafetyNet and OTA is important to me. I'm likely to contact Asus China for proof in how my serial/IMEI was flashed at the factory.

[Help] Can not get OTA update when converted to WW

My ROG2 is Tencent version and I have converted it to WW version using this guide: [GUIDE] [RAW Firmware] [RE-LOCK] Convert CN to->WW or WW to->CN Rom (28/08)
I can't get FOTA update since My phone still tell me it is newest firmware.
I have tried to download the OTA package in the official download site and put it in to the phone. It tell me there was a newer firmware founded, but when I click ok to update, I got an error.
Sorry for my bad english, I just wondered is the origin WW version ROG2 can get this OTA update?
If WW version can get OTA, what's wrong with the CN version(which converted to WW version)?
Is possilbe that I get the OTA update?
PLUS: My bootloader never be unlocked. When I convert back to CN version, I can get FOTA.
You can’t get OTA updates on the WW ROM sadly.
The conversion was too good to be true. There is something being identified on our Tencent models - both the 128GB and 512GB versions that is different from the official global model. As a result the update is failing. Hopefully it can be resolved.
The China ROM is fine but I’m now running into issues with Banking apps because the device does not pass SafetyNet and CTS compatibility.

Stock WW rom, no rooting or unlocked bootloader had the same failure when SafetyNet right out of the box for me. Also, FOTA fails for me.
Yeah it’s a bit of a joke. If only ASUS had actually bothered to launch this Globally we wouldn’t have to go through with all these loopholes.
In its current state I’m most likely not going to keep it. I need to use my banking apps and get OTA updates.
What is going on with people saying they can't use banking apps? I am able to use the chase, capitol one, Google pay with no issues on ww rom, rooted
Well in the UK the NatWest Banking App is not opening due to a ‘security error’ and that’s due to the phone not passing SafetyNet specifically the CTS Profile. This is on the stock CN ROM, not rooted and with a locked bootloader. Other people with the WW ROM are reporting the same also unrooted and with a locked bootloader.
Maybe because you are rooted you can mask certain aspects with Magisk Hide which is enabling your banking apps to work or perhaps they have less stringent controls.
Technically, FOTA fails because even after the clean Raw conversion - the WW Rom shows Product Model as CN_I001D Internally. (This is ro.product.name value)
Also the Boot Image fingerprint too still remains as CN Model. (Refer to the attached Image).
Both of these are not changed even though RAW firmware is flashed.
If anyone can figure out a way to change it by finding the location where it keeps these values, We can achieve FOTA.
@KanadeTi - Thank you for opening a thread for this.

My device had the WW RAW image flashed out of the box with a locked bootloader. However since we cant get OTA's on the WW ROM currently, I went ahead and used the CN RAW image on your thread to revert the device back to its original firmware.
For some reason my device does not pass SafetyNet - specifically the CTS Profile Match even though the device is bootloader locked and not rooted. On top of that I am not even receiving CN OTA's. I am still stuck on the June 5th 2019 security patch. I check for software updates but it keeps saying I am up to date. I dont know if going from WW to CN or back again causes issues because compared to Rashad's ROG Phone 2 which was un-tampered with mine is having these two glaring issues.

Sorry mate, I do not have WhatsApp.
As far as we know. We cannot OTA on the converted devices. You can use the newest raw firmware to update your ROM. If you want your CTS back. Just flash back to CN version.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/rog-phone-2/how-to/flashing-ww-rom-changing-cn-fingerprint-t3969765
I did this recently and can now manually flash updates from asus's website (but still don't see OTAs through the built in updater).

Well.......
I found this Model.
You need to change /vendor/factory/COUNTRY this flie.
CN→WW
Used Notepad++ open it.
But,if you want to change this file you most to be unlock bootloader and root your ROG Phone 2.
This file can't found in RAW file or UL OTA file.
Sorry.By my poor English.

i have tencent updated on youtube from cn to ww and finger print ww. today just update from asua websit to ww 1910.44 on the phone no problem (sweet). youtube bobby prat a1.
I've done some research on this, and I'm almost 100% sure it uses the IMEI to check if it's the CN model or not. I do know that the updater app sends it to their server, and in response you get a line (in an xml document) containing information about whether the device has been unlocked, when it was first activated and location - this is then stored in /ADF/dmclient/dm_client_info. Unfortunately that's only stored for caching purposes - and it will be reverted to what's stored on their servers if you change it. Here's what mine looks like, for example:
Code:
GID[KEY]1935[ATTR]DISABLE_FOTA[KEY]null[ATTR]UNLOCK[KEY]0[ATTR]ACTIVATE_TIME[KEY]2019-12-06 00:05:13.0[ATTR]LOCATION[KEY]CN
As it is, I won't be able to make much progress without help from someone with a WW device. I've managed to change the imei it sends to their server (by changing a property), and that does change the line above - but so far I've only seen different ACTIVATE_TIMEs and, unfortunately, LOCATION has always remained at CN.

Trouble updating Galaxy Note 9

Hi i am new here and need help with updating my Samsung note 9 i still have a baseband N960USQS1ARI5 but will like to update to the latest firmware. i'm using an unlocked AT&T phone. can anyone guide me? I'm not sure if updating the firmware will lock the phone and the process to update, do I just update the firmware in stages as the updates were released till i get to the latest update or can i update straight up to the latest? I am thinking of using Odin, is that a safe way to do this? any help will be appreciated. Lastly, can I change from the AT&T firmware to lets say a none carrier based firmware so as to stop seeing the AT&T logo on boot up? Maybe switch to a firmware that supports global or international? Does anyone have links to an unlocked firmware update i can use, as well? Please help!
I must state that the phone never updates automatically as it always says the software is up to date.

to your last point, at&t phones are notoriously bad at updating
factory unlocked phones will remain forever unlocked and phones unlocked that are bespoke to a specific carrier will also remain unlocked even with Odin flashes providing that the method employed to unlock it was legitimate. Some unlock methods employ root and only trick the phone into thinking its unlocked. Well, once you remove root, and thusly the trick, the unlock is gone. I have ran across rare examples where the person swore up and down that they unlocked their phone with a legit unlock code and that it relocked to a carrier once the sim was inserted and initial programming completed, but i dunno. Sounds weird to me, but every person who said this also said that the phone locked to a carrier other than the one it came from originally. Take that for what its worth, but i still mostly stand by the first couple lines of this section of my diatribe
If you want the at&t crap gone, get the N960U1 firmware and flash it in Odin. You will need the modified version of Odin to flash it so it can ignore the 255 errors the phone throws up from flashing firmware for a carrier (or, in this case, no carrier) on to a phone that it wasnt originally designated (not designed) for
go to sammobile.com/firmwares, get the info for the firmware you want to d/l, get the Frija tool or Samfirm and download the firmware thru one of those as theyre literally 5x faster and flash it

so then only root, twrp and a custom rom left with some special kernel what is saving the battery, lets me use the gps and bank apps.
