auto brightness issue - Sony Xperia 1 II Questions & Answers

My Xperia 1 ii was supplied by Vodafone and has latest software update.
I have noticed an issue whereby when I wake my device up and I'm in a fairly dim room it wakes up on full brightness every the and quite slowly reduces down to just off of minimum.
Don't understand why it always starts on full brightness?

Same thing happening here, I assume it's a bug that'll be resolved in the future.

I don't have this problem. But I do have issue with the brightness in general. In bright sunlight it's very hard to read the screen, even at 100% brightness. (Much worse than my wife's fruit phone for example.)

I agree also that the brightness could be better in strong sunlight however on a positive note I do think the issue I has has been fixed in the last update I received a couple of days ago.

Thanks, did you clean flash or do you know of a way to safely update without losing data? Are you stock or rooted?

Settings, Display, Cover Selection -> select others. This resolved the problem for me.

Same here. Auto brightness is actually a mess (indoors and especially @ night).

Need an update to sort this ASAP.
I'm pretty sure this was an issue on another Sony phone I had also..
Other than this the phone has been great and battery life is really solid for me.

Didn't do much in my case

Same here, solution does not work...

This happened to me as well. The problem went away after a couple of days. Probably the adaptive brightness learning itself.

I'm curious, is it the case that the adaptive brightness learns? More specifically if it sets a brightness level automatically and I up it a little manually using the slider, does this help it learn my custom value in that environment for future use in its automation?
I haven't really used auto brightness before however feeling now it would be handy, as I was finding myself adjusting it a lot. Been using it for a day now and so far it's doing a good job, just occasionally I'll adjust it.

Ahh that's handy, thanks for that! I use a quick toggle to activate it and hadn't seen that screen with that informative text.
Great to know!

Screen dimming in direct sunlight...

I have auto brightness turned off. The screen looks great when I wake the phone up, but if it's a sunny day and I wake it up the screen comes on strong and then immediately dims. I only see this happen when it's sunny. Am I missing a setting somewhere?
Thanks.

try using lux for me it's too bright at night time burns my eye
I noticed this too, also is to bright at night if i am reading in bed
The brightness isn't the issue for me... The issue is the noticeable dimming in direct sunlight.
Again, I do not have auto-brightness turned on yet I still experience noticeable screen dimming in sunlight.
Anyone have any idea why it might be doing this?

The screen dims by itself when you're using manual brightness?

Yes it does.
Glad to see this thread. I only noticed it once but I thought I was imagining it. Yeah it drops the brightness off by a decent margin which makes no sense. For me, it's still usable in sunlight but the full brightness would be better. I have auto brightness turned off as well as attentive display. Dunno what it is.

Yes. Give it a try and you'll see. It's really weird and it doesn't make any sense because it should be just the opposite of anything. But since I have it set to manual brightness it shouldn't do anything at all. Go figure...

Thanks for validating my observation. I thought I was imagining it as well the first 5 or so times that it happened.

AHAHAHA yay!
it happens to me too!
i had a Moto Maxx, Intl version of Droid Turbo!!
it happens exacly the same!!
went at store, got another one, but it has the same behavior...
contacted Motorola...
they called me and told me that isnt not an issue, its a feature!! hahaha
i hope Lollipop solve that....
A feature? Lol. I had it happen too and thought I was seeing things.
I was actually surprised that I couldn't find any mention of this "feature" here on XDA or even through a Google search. I think everyone was thinking that they must be imagining it. LOL!

i could "turn it off" putting my fingers in sensors at sunlight...and then, nothin happens....
of course its something that has to do with sensors...
but, really dunno if is a feature or a bug...haha
No doubt it is a bug... Cause it makes absolutely no sense.

Thanks, I haven't checked. Based on others' recommendations I downloaded Lux from the market and I am extremely happy with the feature set. After playing with it for a bit I immediately purchased the full version to support the dev. I'm impressed!
I'm down! Mine does it too. 21.21.12 holdout also. "Lux pro" works great.

auto brightness problem

Having an issue with this when sat in lower light conditions where it seems to keep jumping around to the point where it hurts my eyes as will just not settle on a happy medium.
Anyone else having this?
Yes, this is a pretty common problem on this phone. I use Lux, which totally solved the issue. Just takes a bit of configuration to how you want it to be.
Thanks for the reply. Is it software or hardware related? Should I consider exchanging the phone as it's only a few days old?

You can try, but it seems that the OS software tends to over-compensate AND also shift back-and-forth in quick reaction to what the sensor is sending it. It would be better for it to take a bit longer and react less severely to an average of a longer sample of ambient lighting levels. If my guess is correct, then this should be fixable in a software update.

It's a software problem. Everyone has the same issue on both the XZ1 and the XZ1c.
See here, and here.
Ok thanks
Hopefully an update is coming soon. Seems to be a few bugs in this phone which is a shame as has great potential
Got a pushed update for Xperia Intelligence Engine ver 1.1.A.0.28 last night, after installation the auto brightness seems to behave better now, not so aggressive as before.
Correction: found out it is still the same, after testing on several lighting condition.

This is definitely a software issue. I've installed an app named LUX and the issue is not there anymore. In the meantime, today, I've got a new update on the phone (47.1.A.2.374) and have disabled the app. Let's see if this is finally fixed.
Myself, I have turned the auto-brightness control off. To be honest, I don't think the problem is restricted to any one phone in particular, but it's particularly egregious on the XZ1C.

Issue still here with latest update...really annoying, but at least LUX app does the job...

Huge system battery drain

So I left my phone at around 90% yesterday night with both WiFi and data turned off with no apps running it background and when today I woke up all my battery was drained. I did some research and people suggested to delete google play cache etc which I did. I am still wondering about the real culprit and the reason behind this.View attachment 4582529

You have the same problem that I had. (Not bad as yours...). As you can see, all the core clocks are at maximum speed, draining battery. The solution is to change the 'scaling governor' from 'interactive' to 'ondemand'... But to do so you need to unlock bootloader and root the device. I did this last night and my battery is fine now.
You could also delete the cache+data from google play services, and reboot your phone (turn wifi off!). You will not have the problem anymore (but if you switch the Wifi back 'ON' it will come back after a while).
See more abou this problem in the thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/help/frequency-sd660-stuck-maximum-t3832366

also will this void my warranty if I root & unlock BL but not flash a custom ROM etc?

The normal cpu in iddle looks like the SS i've attached... It should increase clock when you're actually doing stuff, but, if the phone is iddle it should go back to the 'lowest' setting, which is what is currently in my SS.
And it will probably void warrenty, but I'm not sure... Good luck!
I am really surprised we are facing this issue even after having Android One. Wish I had waited and gone for Poco.

This issue was happening in pixel 2 as well, months ago... There are people here in the forum that own this device and does not have the problem... So maybe we're unlucky?

Go in the 'CPU' tab and change the 'scaling governor' from 'interactor' to 'ondemand' (you need to apply this in two itens, each item control 4 cores - its under the section "Big Governor" and "LITTLE governors") then reboot device.
Use cpu-z to confirm if the value was indeed changed.
Quick solution is to reboot. Fixes the issue but it gets triggered again! Submit a ticket on the feedback app.. a lot of people are affected by the CPU maxing out

It is just $50 more expensive and is available in India. No BS.
Xiaomi doesn't even reply to people or keep them updated like OnePlus does about the current issues and ETA of OTA.
A2 is like 230$ and poco is over 400 on gearbest for example. OnePlus yes sure they reply but they are lying all the time.
+1 , this sucks!!!

Poco will have their own bugs, don't worry.
this is Xiaomi world, good hardware, good price & lot of bugs.
I'm curious as why in CPU-Z, my processor is labeled as SD636 2.21ghz but the model is 660.
As for the cpu frequency, mine was like that until I stopped using the fingerprint and switched to trusted face.
It didn't get stuck ever since.
Now it discharges by 12% per hour without games, give it a try :good:

Confused about bright night feature?

No option in camera? Where is it?
do you have the phone already?
I already pre prder it and i'm just watching all the reviews from youtube.
Bright night is baked into the AI functionality not as yet a standalone
Bright night is actually under scene optimizer -> intelligent features. There's suppose to be a visual prompt of some sort. I used a retail unit in a bright setting, which might be why it didn't work on the S10+.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.. Im on 13.1.14.5.w10 which may explain that. I'm not getting any new update at the moment, unfortunately. will wait. Does the new update also improve a bit battery usage, it is draining quite fast now!

Hello I also have some flickering since last update. The left part of the big screen sometimes appears darker than the right and flickers. Closing and opening sometimes fix it, also when toggling off auto brightness. Anyone in the same case or is it a hardware failure?
