LG G8 AT&T SIM unlock? - LG G8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I recently bought a brand new unit from the US and by the time I got it delivered the esn went bad therefore AT&T won't unlock it via their website. Tried a few websites and a few premium eBay listings but they can't generate unlock code. The phone asks for unlock code when non att card is inserted so all I need is the code. Spoke to a guy which is flashing roms though TeamViewer and he said it's impossible. I'm ready to donate a good amount for a valid unlock code.

Sorry, I don't know if an unlock code is available anywhere, but can you detail a bit more about that guy flashing roms? There's a lot of users with at&t devices here stuck on android 9, for whom that would be very useful. Again, sorry for not having an answer to your actual question

What do you mean the "ESN went bad"? That's...not a thing.
If your phone hasn't been on AT&T's service, it won't be registered with AT&T, which means you can't carrier unlock through them. I've seen services advertising unlock codes for the G8, but every time I ask about the AT&T version nobody replies. I don't think we can do it as of yet.
And yes I'm also on Android 9 and just waiting. I'm in Europe a lot, so I can't use my locked G8

If somebody buys new phone on finance, sells it off on eBay and never pays it back they block the ESN/imei after 2-3 months. I think that's exactly what happened in my case as the phone was brand new sealed.

No, not really. The ESN gets blacklisted on that specific service, but it doesn't mean the ESN is bad. But if it's locked to the service, you're pretty boned. An ESN gets flagged as "banned" when someone stole the phone. Then you can't use it on any service.
Still if you bought a financed phone and were not aware, you are able to get your money back on eBay

I've already reached a settlement but that's not the point of this conversation. The point is to find an unlock code for a blacklisted at&t phone. Not being able to flash another firmware I understand, but when the phone asks for unlock code surely somebody must be able to provide it.

Maybe in another 6 months or so like V35/V40.

I've never had good luck with unlock codes m8. But like you I also have a SIM locked AT&T G8 and I'd like to be able to use it on multiple carriers.

I’m honestly about to give up, it’s not worth the stress and the PayPal disputes with websites and sellers. If here nobody can help than there’s no hope.

These unlock code services won't generate an unlock code for AT&T G8/V60 at all, even if they are 100% clean. The unlock codes are simply not available. It was the same for V35/V40, after about a year or so we were able to get unlock codes.

I understand but it’s been over an year for the G8 now and still not available. No bootloader unlock, no custom roms, basically no other way of unlocking it.

Yeah, not sure what AT&T’s deal is. It’s been a year and it’s still impossible to find unlock services for the G8. What a scummy company! Here in Canada all carriers have to provide free unlocking for phones after they’re paid off, and they need to sell unlocked phones to begin with now. Don’t know why the U.S. market sucks so much in this regard.
You know what’s worse? The only way to get updates on an LG G8 AT&T model is with an active AT&T SIM card... seriously, what the ****. Telcos are really squeezing consumers for all they’re worth in the USA

IS THERE STILL NO WAY TO UNLOCK?

I tried to use a heicard chip to unlock it , but it was destroyed when I put it on the chip tray , I put it on the chip tray it got stuck and when I took it off it was torn , I will have to buy another one to test

My device is an unpaid contract AT&T locked bootloader with Android 9, outside US. So I don't think I can: upgrade to android 10 to then upgrade further, unlock bootloader + carrier, flash custom roms, correct?

By doing the things you wrote here? But how would i delete all partitions if I don't have access to twrp due to the bootloader being locked? And Wouldn't I need android 10 to use the exploit to unlock the bootloader/install custom roms/upgrade to 11?

It seems you do not even have a rudimentary knowledge of the game so I recommend that you're better off finding someone who knows the ropes to do it for you.
However if you're willing to risk the phone being bricked so start with backing up by following the instructions here. Let me know when you're finished with creating backup then I'll tell you how to do the rest.
Edit: There's no chance to do sim unlock if the lock is IMEI depended by this I mean the IMEI is registered as a locked phone to ATT in the country's network.

Strange Droid 3 issue

I just received my XT883 (Chinese version) of the Droid 3 from an ebay seller in Hong Kong.
I am in USA.
I popped my T-Mobile USA sim card in but didn't get any network.
When I try to make a call, the phone dials and gives me a message welcome to Verizon, and they
will direct me to an operator to take a credit card for the phone charges.
Also weird is that there are Verizon logos on the front and back of this phone.
I didn't think they should be there since Verizon isn't in China.
When I remove the battery, the sticker inside says XT883.
The software details are as follows:
System version 5.6.890.XT862 Verizon.en.US
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband N_03.18.29P
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-g790a33c
[email protected] #1
build number 5.5.1_84_D3G-55
Besides for all this, the phone seems to be loaded with Verizon bloatware.
I can use wifi, but not gprs.
To make matters more confusing, there was a T-mobile outage in my area that they said could last
up to 72 hours, and they were having all kinds of network and computer issues today. There is a small chance that
this might account for my inability to get phone signal. Bad timing.
What do you guys make of this?
Did they flash the phone with the wrong rom?
If it has Verizon logos on it and the system version has XT862 in it, its a regular US Droid 3. The XT862 can be unlocked for Tmobile but won't work without modification. I assume you knew that already and thats why you wanted to get a XT883.

Actually I had no idea it was a Verizon branded phone. The photo in the ebay ad and the ad itself didn't show or mention Verizon.
I assumed this was an XT883 Rom and radio that was fully unlocked for GSM and internet here in the USA. That's what the ad said.
Besides, this came from China, and the system sticker under the battery says it is an XT883. So how could it be a US 862?
Anyway, I am new to Android so can you give me some advise on how I can fix this-the easiest way?
Based on the details I listed, was it flashed wrong?
Thanks for your help.
Which keyboard does yours have?
This is the US Droid 3 XT862. Notice the orange symbol keys and the microphone key. Also notice the verizon logo, its possible the battery cover could have been swapped on yours, but the verizon logo on the front would only appear on a US model.

This is the XT883, notice the blue lettering on the symbols and the character key where the microphone is on the XT862. Also notice the lack of Verizon logo.
If you were sold an XT862 when the listing shows a XT883 in the title and images then I would contact the seller.

Hey Spunker,
Thanks for your quick reply.
I have the top one with orange lettering on the symbols.
They must have replaced the sticker on the inside of the unit
Stupid bastards-Vendor name is: cellphoneforever
Best to stay away from them.
Is there any easy way to change my unit to run on GSM?

I'd say you definitely have the XT862, both software and hardware confirm it. As far as the sticker it may have been placed there by the seller? Ive never done it since Im on Verizon but there is a way to unlock the XT862 for At&t/Tmobile.

Guys thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
This method requires I buy an unlock code, which may or may not work.
I'm not sure I want to invest more money this way. Also, the link for rooting
says that method no longer works.
This Ebay seller really ripped me off. In fact they are still running auctions for unlocked
XT883, but in looking at their feedback I now see they have ripped off over 1,000 people
in the past year. surprised Ebay allows this to happen.
Mr. O, how did you unlock your XT862?
Again thanks for the assistance.

Hey. If you purchased it recently, it sounds like you're protected under your bidding rights, especially as the phone itself seems a bit fixed. ;] I haven't looked into the seller just yet, but throwing this up in the off chance this is read before I have the time to look at the bidding items.
How did you pay for the item? If you used PayPal, that makes it a bit easier. Just contact them/eBay, there should be a link or I can try and scrounge one up if you need it. I usually call PayPal directly if I have issues because they're super friendly and usually point you in the right direction.
Definitely something very deceptive going on if the internal label says XT883.
Something does not sound right if you placed your T-Mobile SIM in the phone and it did not ask you for unlock code. It may already be unlocked or it could be permanently SIM locked if someone else attempted to unlock it too many times.
They may have sold you some used or refurbished Verizon model and placed a counterfeit label on it.
I would definitely file with ebay against this seller and just get your money back.
If you really want to try and use this Verizon XT862, I would recommend the unlock procedure using the newer radio and build.prop in post #196 of the unlock thread.

LG G4 H811 Unlock

It's become more than apparent that unlocking the LG G4 H811 variant is next to impossible, if you're not a T-Mobile customer. I'm on AT&T and I bought the phone from a T-Mobile employee, who purchased the phone to resell on Craigslist, using an LG promotion, exclusive to those employees. I add this detail to stress that the phone is not stolen, nor is it blacklisted. I've tried everything in my skill set to unlock it, to no avail. I've even taken it to a couple third party shops in Cleveland , who were stupefied at the new Unlock App T-Mobile forces on us to prevent unlocking. I want to use it as if I bought it from AT&T, calling, 4G data and all. Who can suggest the best possible method? I understand that a user on these forums can unlock it for $45, but this is a bit too steep for something I already spent a couple hundred dollars on. Please help!

I'm in the same boat you are in. Mine isn't blacklisted or anything T-Mobile said that the phone that I have is paid off but that it wasn't on their network for more than 18 days. I'm not understanding why if the phone is purchased outright why do you have to be on T-Mobile for a certain time? Or if their even telling me the truth.

I called their customer support and they told me to call LG and get the code, since T-Mobile gets it from them anyways. I called LG and they said to call T-Mobile... I called T-Mobile back and they told me to call the person who originally purchased the phone. I texted him, a guy about my age (I'm 21). Still waiting to hear back, but my God, the last thing I want to do when I sell something, is have the buyer come back and ask me for help. I feel like I'm bugging him. The thing I want is so simple, yet so godd**n difficult to achieve.
I am T-Mobile customer for a long time. If you have time to wait and want to get it unlocked for free you can do the following:
1) Ask some one you know with T-Mobile sim card and account and put his/her sim in your phone.
2) Make couple of calls so T-Mobile's system will register the device. You can then give the sim card back.
3) Remember that date and you may need to wait from 40 to 60 days.
4) After that period get same sim card from that person, put it in the phone and launch that Unlock App, pick "Permanent Unlock" and if you are eligible then great if not, that person will have to call T-Mobile and ask for the unlock code.
So the above is normal procedure to get a phone unlocked. This is what I do, but for me it is normal since I am a customer and able to use the phone while waiting that period.

I don't, but you can search online and I am sure you will fine it.
World GSM Codes told me that they could do it but they could not. It was suppose to happen in a couple of days. When I inquired several days later as to why I haven't been unlocked they replied that they needed a couple of more days. Since then I have sent them a few emails asking why it hasn't happened and one requesting a refund, all of which have gone unanswered. I now have a paypal claim filed against them to get my money back.

The temp unlock is good for 30 days. Afterward you will need to insert a valid T-Mobile SIM to reunlock it again. If you keep the phone on an active T-Mobile post paid line for 40 days, you can request permanent unlock and it will be unlocked for life.

I haven't used it on T-mobile, been using it on AT&T. Don't know if it was paid off or not either. Bought it off a guy on Craigslist for about $220 after I buy the accessories needed.
Tried the device unlock app, chose the permanent unlock option and it's unlocked ever since. Never had this happened on a smartphone before, I was surprised myself.

How to tell N6 original carrier?

I purchased one brand new on eBay and was wondering whether it a playstore, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Sprint n6.
I don't think it matters with the Nexus 6. I do believe the units sold through the carriers were unlocked.
One way to tell if it was a carrier phone is to try and use an MSL unlock code. By default it should be all "0", however; if you bought it from a carrier like I did it will be an actual code.
I think carrier matters, although the phone is unlocked and you'll be able to use it on supported networks however you may potentially face issues in OTAs. Just my opinion because I am currently having some problems updating my unrooted & non modified N6, using it another region but not getting any updates.

Carrier doesn't matter on Nexus devices except for the SPC/MSL code which is 000000 on unlocked devices.
I am also in Pakistan, there are tons of 'smuggled' XT1103's here, some with Verizon logos and some without. In fact, there are even some with T-Mobile SIM cards still inserted. Anyhow, once you flash a factory image with the new stock recovery, you should get OTA updates as any other Nexus 6.
During the Android 5.1 era, the Nexus 6 had specified builds for those on Project Fi or T-Mobile, in your thread I noticed you were running on LYZ28N which is the build used for T-Mobile ONLY as specified on the Factory Images page. You won't get an OTA unless you're in the USA with a T-Mobile SIM Card.
Flash the latest unified builds of Android 6.0.1, the latest being MMB29X for the Nexus 6, it includes the latest security patch (2nd Apr 2016).
Here's the link for it, it's approx 1GB.

AT&T models were sim-locked.

I think carrier matters, although the phone is unlocked and you'll be able to use it on supported networks however you may potentially face issues in OTAs. Just my opinion because I am currently having some problems updating my unrooted & non modified N6, using it another region but not getting any updates.

What ota the phone gets is determined by the installed sim card, AT&T blocked Marshmallow for a while, T-mo got some different Wi-fi calling builds, and verizon at one point had specific Vo-LTE builds.
Far as I know at this point with the monthly builds everything's consolidated.

So once I flash my N6 to MMB29X, I'll be getting OTAs like other N6 and wont have to flash/side load any update again?

This is what i get when creating a shortcut using apex laumcher, activities/hiddenmenis. Does this mean that i got a sprint device? Look at the path of the hiddenmeni targets.

Not necessarily.
However to confirm, check the first 2-3 digits of your IMEI.
If it's 99, then probably Sprint or Verizon, though the latter would have a logo on the back.
If it's 35 or 01, then it's either AT&T, T-Mobile or a Play Store model.
I have an app called VZWAPN on my phone and there's no way it can even be a Verizon device since it's a UK XT1100 Model.

My only concern is getting a subsidized device with an unpaid balance that could potentially be blacklisted if original owner decides to leave sprint, tmob, att or vrz withoit paying balance. Thanks for the replies.
If you hadn't already purchased the phone off ebay, I would have told you to go to Swappa instead, as they don't permit the kind of shenanigans you find with ebay and Craigslist purchases, namely selling the phone while payments are still owed, not making any further payments, and leaving you with a phone that is blocked on the carrier.
Once you get the phone, go to Swappa and run its IMEI through their IMEI check tool. That should tell you if the IMEI is clean or not.

Thanks for the suggestion. I ran a swappa check and it is clean. But this status may change, that is why the only safe option is the google playstore way. Have a great day!
I disagree with that sentiment. Swappa explicitly prohibits the scenario I describe. Should it happen Swappa will refund the money. Amazon is a perfectly viable option so long as you buy from Amazon and not a third party. Motorola themselves offered the device for sale on the Motorola website.
Point here is that while Google may be the safest route, there are other routes just as safe, if you do your homework.
AT&T and Verizon both have their logos on the back of the phone.

yes, but the google after service is much better than anywhere else. seriously, its not even close. not like you can buy a n6 through google anymore though
Sure, but the OP's statement was that Google was the only safe method of getting the device, and that simply isn't true. In the case of the N6 I could have bought the device direct from Motorola, or direct from a carrier. I personally chose Amazon, because they had quantities of the device in their warehouse from Motorola when Motorola themselves didn't.

to buy one, there's many "safe" places.
I just purchased a N6 and tried to install a Project Fi SIM into the device. Every time, I load in the ROM of the day, it does not see the SIM. Looking at the IMEI, I can deduce that this is a former AT&T phone. Since this is an issue of SIM locked, can the SIM be unlocked even though the firmware has been changed and the original AT&T SIM is long gone?

yes. but you will need either att's code or to purchase a sim unlock code for the device.

So in theory, I can go to my local AT&T store and since the phone is clean, they just give me a code? I am assuming that I just need to plug in the digits via the dialpad to unlock, correct?

Options for Unlocking AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 GM-900A

Hey Everyone,
I need assistance with unlocking my smartphone; it's an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 GM-900A. I did a little research on the internet and it's my understanding that unlocking a Samsung smartphone linked with AT&T is a bit more difficult than it already is with other companies. I also saw a lot of sites that offer "unlocking" services for a certain price. Before I decide to do that, I wanted to know if there were any others options or which site is most reliable. From what I've seen and read, it seems that this forum is the best option for seeing if this is possible. Appreciate any assistance you guys can offer.
I am not familiar with unlock sites but have heard mixed reviews on them. Those sites can only unlock the sim card, not the boot loader. Just thought I would put that out there since you didn't specify what kind if unlock you were looking for. I recently submitted a sim unlock through AT&T for my s5 since I am out of contract.

Unfortunately, mine is still under contract but I would like to unlock my smartphone so it can be used with another carrier. This is the type of unlock service those sites are saying they can provide, right? I've also read and heard mixed reviews on the internet, which is why I came here in hopes that I can get additional info on this. Thanks for your prompt response.
Just use att they will unlock your sim

Thank you. I checked it out and it doesn't seem to support "Galaxy S5 SM G900A"; the only thing close to that is "Galaxy S5 SM G900F". Appreciate it if you can suggest another site.

I'm unable to do so because the smartphone is still under contract.
Call ATT. New laws made all carriers be (generally) required to unlock their SIMS not bootloaders under some conditions. see link https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-unlocking-faqs
If u are under contract they will make u pay but u then meanwhile u can use another carrier. Here is a link to an unlock service. https://www.doctorsim.com/us-en/unlock-phone/samsung/
Good Luck!

They serve entirely different purposes. Sim chooses carrier (ATT,etc). Bootloader chooses what will be started when phone is booted ie system(rom), recovery(TWRP etc), bootloader itself. Bootloader unlock means changes can be made to what will start under different boot requests. No disadvantages to just unlocking sim, often used for foreign travel where your regular sim will not connect. Many times carrier will unlock SIM LATE in contract for foreign travel reasons.
You can try using www.unlockradar.com if you want to unlock your S5. I have a cell phone repair store and I've been using them for a few months and never had any problem. Their customer support is very responsive. https://www.unlockradar.com/unlock-samsung/galaxy-s5-sm-g900a

Are you under contract via a next plan thru at&t? If you are planning to unlock to switch carriers I imagine you want to end service with at&t. If so they will want you to pay for the phone in full or return the phone. If you don't pay & keep the phone I'm pretty sure they blackball the imei so it can't be used by any carrier. So what's your end goal here?

Yes, I'm under a contract that has been suspended and told them that I am currently not able to pay but also am not able to get another phone due to financial reasons. They said they understood my situation but cannot unlock my phone due to the contract and that once I am able to pay, they will provide me the unlock code if I still want it or wish to continue using their services. I guess what my end goal is to not have to pay for another phone when I'll only use it for medical reasons and once I am financially stable, I can go ahead and pay and probably continue with AT&T. I see your point and understand the predicament I have. I'll just have to wait and see. . .

easy, just unlocked mine the other day. I messaged t mobile through twitter, gave them the imei, my email and phone number. make sure you tell them you purchased a t mobile variant through Samsung to save yourself some time. you also have to your t mobile sim card in the device. after they verify all your info, he will put in the unlock request and will tell you after 72 hours, go back into the unlock, click permanently unlock and you'll be good. it took a little over 24 hours and it let me unlock

I believe you have to have the phone on TMO's network for at least 40 days whether you've paid for the phone outright or not.

Normally you have to have the device paid in full, then be on the network for 3days.
If that does not work once youve done that. Give the 611 number a call and they will email you a code in about 2 days

Don't waste your time calling them. I called more than 4 times. First time they send me to Samsung, that of course didn't work, called couple times more got nowhere, last time I called they "confirmed with tech support, the phone is unlocked before shipped from factory for sure", it is not. Anyhow, I finally broke down and reactivated my old tweeter account and tweeted from my phone's tmobile application and that finally seemed to work, should have it unlocked in 3 days and as soon as that's done, will unlock my wife's phone as well. But there is a price to pay: Already got few spam e-mails from tweeter and since I activated tmobile program on my phone, I can't shut that program down and leaves some permanent message in notification area that can't be erased and uses my battery. I'm going to have to clean all this up after the phone is unlocked. It seems tweeter is the only way to do it, but process itself was painless.

Are you talking about the tmobile app? Because the unlock app doesn't leave a notification. Go into the tmo app settings and simply turn off the constant notifications for data.
Also any emails you get from Twitter have nothing to do with the whole process, you could do the same thing over the phone but twitter is essentially a bypass for the first tier of support.

I have a feeling he is going to have to jump through hoops. He bought someones BOGO and it isn't paid off. He is going to have to wait until that guy pays it off and he's going to have to become a prepaid customer before T-Mobile will unlock the device. An unlock service won't be able to get you an unlock without the device being paid off. I suggest he return it after checking T-Mobile IMEI checker to see if there is a balance and there is one.
