Power interruption to external hard drive (Toshiba 4TB) - Samsung Galaxy M31 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am facing an issue with OTG while connecting to 4TB external Toshiba USB hard drive. I had reformatted the drive using Samsung m31 itself as NTFS is not supported in m31. While the data transfer is going on, there is a power reset and the drive reconnects continuously multiple times.
Need help on this. Is this a known issue or is separate power needed? The works well with Honor Play.

[Q] USB Host & OTG - Disabled?

I bought an official samsung accessory today (the microusb to female usb connector) and tried it out on the Note - when connected a notification pops, and even media scanner runs, but it's no where to be seen under usbstorage?
I tried the same thing on a SGS2 and it works fine.
If the media scanner runs, it should be mounted and appear at:
/sdcard/usbstorage/sda
I assume you are trying a USB stick that's formatted as FAT32. If you are connecting a hard drive, you may find that you have to use an external power supply for the hard disk drive.
i got an unofficial adaptor. 1st time I tried it, I got the connection status bar info & media scan but usbstorage/sda folder was present but empty (with a FAT32 flash drive that had several files & folders).
I disconnected then reconnected and my files showed up OK. It has worked consistantly thereafter.

[Q] Limitations with USBHost Switcher?

Wow, I spent a lot of time chasing this problem, thinking it was some setting in my HD+. (Since I tinker a lot disabling services.)
I have USBHost Switcher installed and it has worked fine. (With a gender changer of course.)
So I tried a brand new 32 GB Kingston USB 3.0 thumb drive I just got. (Supposedly compatible with USB 2.0.)
Nothing. I get a warning that the USB drive was "unexpectedly disconnected." (A race condition? Too fast?)
It's formatted FAT32, with 16kb clusters from the factory. (If cluster size matters to the Nook.) But I can mount a 32 GB FAT32 card with 32 KB clusters, and I can mount an old 256 MB USB 1.0 thumb drive. So the problem seems to be following the USB 3.0 drive. Any thoughts about this and what I can do to get it to play?
Before I concluded that the problem is with the USB 3.0 flash drive, I had tried my Passport WD 1TB external drive as another test of USBHost Switcher. That drive had worked before, but in the meantime I had reformatted it to exFAT. Can't see it on the Nook HD+ anymore. (Bad experimenting. Changing too many variables at once.) I'm guessing not seeing exFAT is a kernel problem?
Sigh. I'm not doing too well here with external storage. I thought I was being smart when androidpolice announced an Amazon sale on this Kingston flash drive. But maybe there's a reason it was on sale?
Some things need to be behind a usb hub. Don't know if that's one of them.
I have an OEM 16gb USB flash drive and a SanDisk 32gb flash drive. Both are USB 2.0, but the OEM doesn't work on my nook.
Have a look around this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307585&page=9
The app TPUSBUmount can fix power issues removing the need to hide accessories behind a hub. Turn on the USBhostswitcher, open TPUSBUmount and connect your thumb drive. The TPUSBUmount will tell you if power if the problem

Thanks for the info. I tried the TPUSBUmount app and it reported a power problem with the Kingston USB 3.0 flash drive. Unfixable.
It turns out that the same flash drive also do not work with a Lenovo desktop machine.

Help on Connecting Hard Drive to xperia Z

Hi friends. I have a 1TB Sony hard drive(NTFS,2.5") that I would like to connect to my xperia Z(Lollipop 5.1.1). If I connect the HDD to my mobile using OTG cable,my hard drive is not getting detected by phone.so I tried using stickmount.when I press mount, my HDD gets detected for a split second and then vanishes.it shows unsupported format/damaged USB.so I tried another two apps.paragon and ntfs mount.but still my HDD is not getting detected by my mobile.so can u guys help me on solving this problem?
Use only HDDs with external power(split "Y" USB cable or second port for power).
Phone cant just like that power it self and 1TB Hard Drive. I tested my xperia with few drivers, and most of them work only for few minutes if they didnt had external power. And also its should be exFAT or Fat32
Also You realize that you can Mess up your HDD when you connect disconnect power to it?
Even if modern Hard Drivers automatically park head to start position when not used, you still can damage it by powering it on/off when connecting to eg. Phone.
Remember that its still a phone, even if it have Raw power of old PC and android have lots of customization options, its still pretty dumb device in terms of working with other devices(and for ACTUAL work).
Im using every day flashdrivers OTG and microUSB ones, but when I connect my external HDD I always use my power bank and "Y" shaped USB cable, because I know that phone cant handle it for to long without a problems.
Also "Y" shaped USB cable is cool because you can always charge two devices at once So i keep it close to my power bank in bag.
But i can connect the hdd(with the ordinary USB cable, not the Y shaped one)to my brother's mobile without any power source and it works perfectly. He is using Huawei honour 4C mobile.

USB OTG, max. size for USB-Stick

Just a question. After rooting my Tab S2 9.7 I expected to be able to use USB Otg. And though it works with smaller USB-Sticks, it seems I cant get it working with a 128GB Stick. The stick worked flawlessly on a Tab S. I did install a custom rom on the Tab S, the Tab S2 is just rooted, and running stock 5.0.2.
Any thoughts, ideas?
Anyone has thoughts about this?
I did root mine, it's running in Marshmallow and I have the same prob, doesn't recognise 128gb stick but recognise the wd 500gb passport drive via otg cable fine.

Verify the format
Pay attention, it seems that the O.S. cannot use NTFS formatted keys...

I have it working on a WD 500G / NTFS external hard disk & not working on WD 2 TB / NTFS external hard disk
It must be size limitation
Nope, the s2 Tab cannot read NTFS natively (6.0.1)! You'd need special drivers to make that work.
Hello, how do I get to connect a USB device (flash drive/HDD/microSD) to my Galaxy Tab S2 anyway?? I just ordered a OTG USB to microUSB cable this week, and although physically I can connect a flash drive to my S2 this way, no drive shows up in my S2. I did make sure my drive is FAT32. Is there a particular brand of cable I should buy?
Did you check the file manager?

I have always had mixed results with my Android devices - some OTG cables work, some don't. Got this in January and it works fine with my unrooted 8" S2 (T713):

I generally use exFAT for my connected drives. Yesterday, by using a Y-cable with power supplied by a battery pack I connected an exFAT Western Digital 4TB My Passport drive to my S2 (drive sucks too much power to be used without separate power supply).

Support for External NVMe to USB-C Gen2 Enclosures

Hello all,
Does anyone have any experience with external NVMe to USB-C enclosures? I have a 512GB NVMe M.2 that I am using with a "Sabrent USB 3.1 Aluminum Enclosure for M.2 NVMe". It works beautifully on my PC on both USB 3.0 and USB-C. I formatted it to exFAT which i could access on my phone before but when I connect the Sabrent it only recognises a device that it provides power to and nothing else.
I tried it on my wife's Galaxy S9 and it appeared for a few seconds. Long enough for the phone to show the correct name of the manufacturer and for the volume to show up under "Files" but then it disappeared and I could not get it to connect again. I tried using a USB-C to USB-C device to no avail. It is as if it doesn't exist except for the light coming on. The enclosure itself works perfectly with my laptop.
Thanks in advance
i had similar problem with a usb 2 enclosure. Turns out phone didnt have enough power to power the hard drive. I managed to get a split usb cable, used that to connect enclosure to phone and battery pack

Thanks @imy300. The phone is perfectly capable of powering an enclosure with a 1TB SSD drive but not one with a 512GB NVMe one!
Now to find a split cable to test this
