one (maybe) stupid question about flash software / rom uploading - Sony Xperia XZ3 Questions & Answers

Is it possible to flash stock firmware or flash custom rom (having unlocked bootloader and twrp) but without erasing user partition??
What happens if i don't wipe the user data partition?
I've had earlier xperias (M5. X10, and everythig was easier

Failed boots
Crashes
Not decryptable userdata
The ROM itself saves stuff in the /data partition
And you won't receive support
Migrate & titanium backup are good backup/restore solutions

thanks for your specific and fast answer

Best way to flash update.

So what's the best way to flash a update and not lose data? If it's just a security update and not an actual version difference, what's the best way to do this and not lose data? Keep in mind, my device is unencrypted. I was thinking flashing everything except userdata, and then booting into TWRP straight away and flashing a kernel before first boot, would this work?

This is how I do it:
Copy/download new zip with prerooted lite stock rom of Danvdh to internal storage.
Boot Twrp-recovery.
Wipe system partition and caches
Flash new rom (zip)
Twrp file manager - restore layers from back up.
Reboot

So it's easier to just use the zip rather than flash with fastboot?

Yes, and I only backup the data partition and recovery on the phone.
Till now I think the method is comfortable and faster for the monthly updates. Everything that's needed is on the phone.
When there is a complete new Android, like N,
it could be different. Especially when kernel, bootloader and radio are new. We need a modded kernel that does not forces encryption.

Unlocking bootloader always erases Data Partition. First check that yours one is unlocked or not, not most devices are come locked. Unlocking will take time as Xiaomi gives you permission to unlock by their own software.
Make a backup, get all your data off then root it. I'm not entirely sure if you can unlock without erasing, but you should never be in a position where you can't afford to reinstall your applications.
This is why it is always best to get twrp on your phone asap so you can back up it.
No, unlocking bootloader doesn't wipes data but you must backup everything just in case anything goes wrong.
it is always recommended to backup everything when flashing ROM, kernel, mod, zip, flashing rom via fastboot method and recovery. in short you should backup everything in all this cases.

Yes i have flashed recovery and roms i always do backup important thing and i take screenshot of installed apps before making any changes and save them to pc or to cloud storage.
there was issue i had was when i flashed TWRP 3.2.1.0 via adb i do not why but it asked me for password i didn't know to password so i had to wipe everything including internal storage and data.
latest twrp is must which is TWRP 3.2.1.0 in order to flash Oreo based ROM.
i was using TWRP 3.0.2-0 before and i had no issue with this recovery i has flashed several nougat roms on this recovery even have upgraded and downgraded from miui9 to miui 8 everything worked perfectly.
i don't know why but i wasn't able to flash any marshmallow based or nougat based roms on TWRP 3.2.1.0 recovery.
yes i did lose data when upgrading from TWRP 3.0.2-0 to TWRP 3.2.1.0 but i had done backup so no issues.
i would highly recommend you to do backup if you are making any changes in your device.

Thanks bro
you need to install stock rom after unlocking
Unlocking Xiaomi Redmi4x santoni bootloader doesn't delete the data partition, but after unlocking the bootloader your phone won't boot, you need to install the same stock rom it was on phone previously.
Download MIUI Stock ROMs (if you didn't make OTA update from MIUI, check Older versions and download the correct ROM)
You can copy the ROM image to phone before unlocking or if you have already unlocked and stuck in boot, you can copy the ROM to an USB flash drive.
You need ADB installed on your PC.
Download the TWRP for Xiaomi Redmi 4X image.
If you want to restore the existing state of your phone, you need to make a backup of the data partition.
Press Volume Down + Power until phone gets in FASTBOOT.
Connect phone to PC with USB cable.
From PC command prompt type the command: fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-santoni.img
TWRP will start on your phone, you can backup all of the partitions, but you need only the data partition to restore.
Now Install the stock rom (you can select USB OTG if ROM is on USB drive), then RESTORE the backed up DATA partition only.

Boot partition in le2 cannot be wiped. As for your bootloader relocking problem, flash twrp and then allow it to perform system modifications. Then wipe data. Then wipe system. If that doesn't work, then format data to ext2 using mkef2s and then for mat data again using ext4. Then format data ,system , cache and dalvik cache only. Your bootloader will not relock by itself again. If it still does, then flash lazyflasher to disable dm-verity and unencrypt phone

Are you able to boot to recovery(twrp)?
If yes, try flashing the latest twrp image using twrp on your phone. Then repeat steps mentioned. Finally, flash stock ROM Zip
Ive bricked the bastard but will continue
Is the red LED flashing or stuck when you let it charge?

[Question] How to update a custom ROM, while being encrypted, without wiping data?

Hello, as stated in the title, I'd like to know if there's a way to update a custom ROM while being encrypted without formatting the data partition. I tried to update several times, but every time I got a recovery bootloop until I wiped the data partition. The only way to avoid this was to totally decrypt my device. Since I'd like to be encrypted, I'd like to know if there's a way to be encrypted and to dirty flash a custom ROM (from TWRP) without resulting in a recovery bootloop. Thank you in advance!

Try removing lockscreen security before flashing an update.

Custom ROM flashing workflow

I'm planning to upgrade from Nokia x6 to Nokia8.
On x6, I really liked the nice and clean custom rom installation workflow of:
Unlock Bootlader
fastboot boot twrp.img
In TWRP, backup the stock everything, upload to PC
In TWRP, wipe everything and flash customRom.zip
(IF something failed) In TWRP, restore backup to bring phone to 100% original state.
Does Nokia 8's workflow differ much? I've read the guide , but still unsure. From what I could see in 8.1 threads, the new bootloader does not support "fastboot boot" command, meaning the first time flash will be destructive (i.e. will wipe the stock without an option to backup partitions first)
