As title. I've tried like 5 different TWRP versions linked from all over the Mi 8 forums and none have worked for me. Any and all versions have made the ROM unable to boot, every restart will load recovery instead and I have to flash stock boot to get the ROM to work. Bootloader unlocked, ROM rooted by having Magisk create a patched boot cos every other way also failed.
I'm also looking for it.

Currently https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-3-0-mi-8-t3837745 this version working but you've to format all of your data then flash your rom. I know its not the standard solution and even I'm waiting for official TWRP for our beloved Mi 8.
You need to choose Format Data first, Reboot again to Recovery, and then flash the DM Verity and Encryption Disabler.
After that, you can go ahead to flash any ROM you like.

Aw man crap, I don't want to wipe my phone againt, bootloader unlock already did it ): I'll wait for a regular version of TWRP then thanks!

Thanks! It's more work than I want to deal with now, phone just got wiped from unlocking bootloader, I don't wanna go through another 5 hours of downloading and reinstalling everything.

Believe me, it worth the efforts! It would be much better than staying with crappy MIUI 10 Global Stable.
Currently, I'm with MIUI EU 10.0.6.0 Stable and I don't want to go back to stock MIUI Stable, just don't forget to install Magisk 17.2 for root access, replace the GPS.conf with your preferred country server URL (I believed it should be Malaysia) - look for a thread by @RainGater for the complete walkthrough - and although it is not necessary, it would be better to edit the default Xiaomi EU build.prop to change the region to match your country (by default it is set to Romania or some EU country, I forgot)

I don't actually have a problem with my ROM. My GPS works fine, and I've already gotten root on my stock Global. Right now in my journey with Android which started with the HTC Desire Z, I don't need a custom ROM, I just need root for the occasional app that needs it I do have root now, but would love TWRP too so I can make full backups. Will check out your links regardless, thanks!

I made a Google Backup of my apps, because I decided to try out some Android 11 roms.
After trying them out, I wanted to go back to Android 10, so I clean flashed my rom, GApps and disable force encrypt, the usual stuff. But the Google Backup, that I previously used on all the A11 roms was suddenly gone.
I thought, that wouldn't be a problem, since I still had my Android 10 TWRP Backup that I made, before I started experimenting with A11.
I restored that backup and couldn't unlock my phone. So I deleted /data/system/locksettings.db and finally my phone would unlock.
But: My sensors didn't work anymore. I searched the internet for info and found out, that my persist partition got corrupted.
tl; dr: I restored a TWRP backup and my Persist partition corrupted.
Until yesterday, I didn't even know, what the Persist partition was. I never touched it.
I know how to get my sensors working again. But I guess my Widevine L1 is gone now, isn't it?

There's actually multiple ways. You could:
Flash persist from Xiaomi's full fastboot package
Flash persistbak to persist
Flash a working persist image from another Mi 9T Pro
All those things worked for me. In the end, I settled with the persistbak method.

It's almost been a year, so I don't fully remember what I did exactly, but there's some tutorials around you can find pretty easily.
The only thing I remember is going into fastboot and dumping and flashing my partitions via command line, I think.

ive been searching for a month and im still not sure which tutorial to follow, all i want is to fix my sensors and get widevine l1 back in case it gets void when i flash persist, any help would be phenomenal!

Well if you didn't make a backup before, L1 is L Gone. I didn't get it back. Following any tutorial should get you your sensors back though.
And remember: The first thing to do when getting a new phone is to backup that persist partition, so you don't need to worry about something like this happening again.

if i remember correctly you can get widevine l1 back via a magisk module or flashing xiaomi.eu rom and you can download the certificate from there, try it out if you dont got nothing to lose, by the way, if i flash persist will the sensors work permanently or do i have to do this again every once in a while?

Oh, interesting. Definitely gotta try that, thanks. How do you download the certificate in MIUI? Does it happen automatically?
Since I flashed my persistbak, I didn't flash anything else and my sensors are still working, so I guess it sporadically happens... sometimes?
Btw, if you aren't already, you should use OrangeFox recovery instead of TWRP on Xiaomi devices. It usually doesn't kill itself by wiping partitions or flashing roms, especially when coming from MIUI. Also, you can make persist backups with it. For some reason they removed that feature from TWRP.

in case you got it wrong xiaomi.eu is a custom miui based rom, not official, just to clarify that, and to download the certificate you must enroll fingerprint then go to fingerprint payments and youll find widevine l1 there, then click on certificate in widevine l1, pretty easy stuff, also how do i install orangefox?

Oh, I can't read. For some reason, I thought you said xiaomi.eu or stock, that's why I said MIUI. Anyway, thanks for telling me. I never heard of that.
To install OrangeFox, just download the zip, make backups if you want to be extra sure and flash the zip. Here's the thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-official-orangefox-recovery-project-r11-1.4308019/
The UI is different, so it took me a little while to get used to it, but ultimately, OrangeFox is a smoother experience than TWRP, at least on Xiaomi.

No, you cannot get L1 through Magisk module - because you need a (paid) certificate for your hardware
To the contrary, there is a Magisk module that disables L1, dropping you to default L3.
Although I never understood who/why needs that

Of course, if you didn't backup a working Persist on time, you have nothing to restore:

I'm going to install the Xiaomi.EU ROM soon, due to the possibility of losing access to Google services (see the other thread in this forum regarding Google services for more info).
Now, I originally wanted to wait for TWRP, but now, I want to do it ASAP instead. Does it make any functional difference whether I install it with fastboot commands or via TWRP?
Oh, and I've once read something about someone losing some per-phone unique key or something due to flashing a custom ROM, causing some functionality to be degraded. Are there any such issues with the Mi 11?

Just use fastboot. You'll be waiting a while for twrp. You shouldn't lose anything but if you're concerned read the Xiaomi EU thread

Yes, flash by fastboot. I don't know which function to lose that you've heard of. I can only tell you that everything works. Full Google support, including Google Pay, Widevine L1 is available. So there is no reason not to flash xiaomi.eu

I know very little about the history of the Xiaomi.EU ROM. Is it just a group of Mi enthusiasts that support it? Can one say that this ROM is much better than the Global ROMs that eventually get released by Xiaomi?
Also, since your device has to be unlocked to flash it, do you still get OTA updates like security patches? Sorry for all the newb questions.

Yes that's correct. More optimised and usually more features than global.
You'll still get OTA updates but you'll need to use fastboot for it.

Ok thanks for the info. I'm slowly educating myself because I thought I would be happy with the CN ROM but the writing might be on the wall for supporting Google services. I already had small issues with Google services not being fully supported (still don't see Nearby Share on what is supposed to be Android 11) but they weren't dealbreakers.
Now Xiaomi.EU is starting to look more attractive.
So if I move to Xiaomi.EU, I would have to apply any OTA security patches myself with fastboot?

Yeah you'll need to flash them with fastboot until there's a twrp. You usually get an update every Friday.
Xiaomi.EU is definitely the way to go for Chinese ROM users

It's the same skin just with all the Chinese crap removed and Google integrated into the system with a few extra features.
If you unlock the bootloader you can install any ROM you want so chinese, EU, global, GSI, and custom ROMs etc when they arrive.
Just be careful that if you decide to relock the bootloader you must be back on the ROM that came with the phone so a Chinese ROM otherwise you'll brick the phone.

GLOBAL Firmware (unlocked) = Saftynet Failed + OTA Updates + Widevine Level 1

Safetynet passed is the google API which lets apps know if you are rooted or not.
Widevine is the DRM protection thingy that enables you to run DRM protected contect like prime or netflix.
Level 1 means full HD any resolution.
Level 3 is SD definition only.
The Xiaomi.EU has OTA updates so choose that.
OTA means over the air updates from Xiaomi. Meaning you'll get regular updates from Xiaomi.
Sounds like this phone is pre-rooted and pre bootloader unlocked.

Uh, Xiaomi.EU if you want OTA updates.
Meaning update from Xiaomi.
So safetynet is a form of security, mostly used so you can work with apps like google pay safely.
OTA means you can get all the updates via wirelessly and automaticly with a press of a button, restart and its done. It also means you only get access to stable versions of your Rom in this case, and dont have access to manual beta roms every week from xiaomi.eu. If you do manualy you need to have a custom recovery like TRWP.
Wildvine l1 is for streaming content like netflix where you can use all the benefits of higher quality vídeo and audio but it works on every avaiable rom out there for now so no issues theres.
If you are starting and dont know how to work with any of it(installing recovery, roms, fixing issues), you have 2 good choices, either go for xiaomi.eu option if you live in europe and want their optimized version of the rom, minimal bloatware, more costumizability, or go for Global if you live in other places and including europe. Global is consider a all rounder and the safer rom to use if you dont know anything.
You can i install everything you want later if you decide to invest your time finding more about roms and if you decide to take that leap.
I bought mi 11 ultra chinese version so i can go through the all process of installing everything myself and also took less time shipping and less cost, but i have 10 years of experience if that counts for anything

Welp here is a more detailed version of what I said.
I personally think of SafetyNet, googles way of assuring their developers that people cant bypass the payment methods to get free stuff.
That's why root triggers banking apps and stuff.

The EU custom ROM is flashed to the phone using a custom recovery. In this case it is twrp recovery. It is much easier to produce ROMs in this format than a fastboot method. There are one, may be 2 fastboot ROMs built by EU Devs before the twrp recovery was available. You could use one of those but any further updates would need you to install twrp recovery as the updates are in that format too.
Just consider it a function of changing from stock to Custom ROMs. It's very little work to do but it does give you a better experience and ota updates.

I fastload'ed the Global Stock ROM from the Xiaomi website which is what my phone had on before, flashed and locked no problem however, the finger print sensor doesn't recognise a finger now and the SafetyNet fails on CTS profile.
Anything I can do to fix this?

I restored the persist partition from the persistbkp partition....so yes
Theretically persist partition can't be restored correctly in Xiaomi new phones.
But fingerprint should not affect by this ... CTS/DRM yes but I don't knot why fingerprint
Did you do Factory reset or so

Hmm OK - is there anyway to undo this and get SafetyNet to pass?
I had passed the command;
dd if=/dev/block/sda22 of=/dev/block/sda21
to restore persistbak to persist
That's pretty funny cause PE passes safetynet.. you maybe stuck with a custom rom now if you really want safetynet!

That's quite annoying, I wanted to get it back to stock to sell on. Without SafetyNet you can't download Netflix, use Google pay (Wallet)
