You should be fine if you're updating using the system updater as you say (provided you have the appropriate device for that firmware - if you don't then the updater should just not let the update happen)
It shouldn't touch any data or settings

it worked, thank you so much.:highfive:

If you update your miui using ZIP file, it will NOT format your data, because it is flashed in recovery mode.

Are u using the Chinese Developer ROM?
Each weekly Update will make you stuck in a boot-loop!
If you can't boot into your ROM anymore, flash the full ROM:
Download latest Xiaomi Mi Note Pro Latest Developer Version Fastboot File Download here
Unzip the Downloaded ROM file
Turn off the device. Press the Volume– key and the Power button at the same time to enter Fastboot mode. Then connect the device to the Windows PC/laptop via a micro USB cable
Download the Download MIUI ROM Flashing Tool from here here and install / extract it
Run the Flashing Tool
Select the extracted ROM folder
Click flash
If You want to do the weekly developer update without bootloop:
Disable Automatic Upgrades if you're on the Chinese Developer ROM
Download the full Chinese Developer ROM from here
Copy it to your device
Open the updater app
Click the menu button.
Select the menu option that says select update ZIP manually
Choose the downloaded full ROM ZIP
It reboots into recovery and automatically flashes the full ROM without producing boot loops
Be patient, it needs a long time, don't interrupt the process!

Guys do you think inbuild custom ROM provided by xiaomi are not good enough, why going for developed ROM version tat does not support OTA directly from Xiaomi.

Go to updater in setting and hit install button. First it will download the update and then update it.
But keep these things in mind.
1.After update is finished your Twrp will be gone if you had permanent twrp before.
2.All app permissions will he reset.
3.And updating through system update takes around 2-3 hrs(,may take more or less)

How to update without losing TWRP and root?

Hello, I have a Mi 9T Pro with 10.3.3, TWRP and Magisk. I received the update to 10.4.0. As stated in the title, how could I update the system without losing the TWRP and root through Magisk? Thank you in advance

You can't. The best way to update is to download the 10.4.0 recovery ROM, then flash that in TWRP. This will still overwrite Magisk, so you will need to install that again straight after installing the update. If you don't install Magisk immediately, then booting into system would also restore stock recovery, so it needs to be done before you reboot to system.

No, you can simply flash the ROM and right after that, flash Magisk. This way you won't loose twrp or Magisk.

I would just add to this that, although this is all that is required, I would still backup things, just in case.
It's always good practice when flashing things to backup what you can, even when it's not needed should things go smoothly. It only takes an absent minded moment of stupidity in TWRP to do some serious damage. As many people, myself included, can vouch for.
Thank you everyone!
I've read a lot about this, some say it's better with fastboot rom and Miflash, but twrp method with recovery seems to be easier method.
Can anybody confirm is it necessary to remove compatibility.zip file from flashable zip file before flashing?
Clean flash or dirty should work for 10.3.4.0 update?
I'm using 9T Pro (EU), rooted, stock 10.3.3.0, TWRP 3.3.1-15

Flashing a minor update is fine to do as a dirty flash in TWRP.
Doing a major update is 50/50 (going from 10.3.x to 10.4.x as it's s change from Android 9 to 10, or going from 10.x.x to 11.x.x). You may be fine, you may have issues. It might be a better option to try using the 'save data' option in the Mi Flash Tool, which is the same as a dirty flash, but will still update vendor and firmware files, should they have changed between the versions.
You might be guided by what the OTA would do. Occasionally when an OTA provides a major version change, it will perform a clean flash and give you big warnings that this will happen first. If an OTA tells you this will happen, then I would definitely use the Mi Flash Tool and use the 'clean all' option.
As for the compatibility zip, it depends on the TWRP you are using. Just try as is first and if your get an error about the wrong device, then remove it and try again.
Thanks a lot, your answers are very helpful in this thread! ?
I got the OTA update to 10.3.4.0 on my Mi 9T Pro, too, but it wouldn't install via TWRP (mauronofrios version 3.3.1-15). I also tried to flash the full 10.3.4.0 ROM (https://bigota.d.miui.com/V10.3.4.0...EAGlobal_V10.3.4.0.PFKEUXM_964826982c_9.0.zip) with TWRP, but that didn't work either, not even after removing compatibility.zip.
I then changed my TWRP to OrangeFox Recovery 10.0_7 stable (via fastboot) and dirty flashed the full ROM via OrangeFox. That worked flawlessly, it even seems that it will be able to install future OTA updates, but that remains to be seen when the next OTA update arrives.

Mi 9T Pro rooted and OTA

So since a couple days ago my phone started to notify me that a new update is out (v10.3.4.0 pfkeuxm) But since i running rooted and with TWRP OTA wont work, it just trow me out to TWRP.
So i downloaded the recovery rom version and trying to flash it via TWRP, but i only get a error message that says
-E:string resource 'zip_compatible_err' not found
Using default value.
Zip treble compatibility error!
Invalid zip file format!
Error installing zip file
So now what? Can only find OTA and recovery version to download.

Dude, the first thing you need to do "mi flash" application on the computer by opening the Global Rom file "Clean All" or "Flash All" (options may be different depending on the program version) option to the device with fastboot mode. So you'il have a clean device and everything will be reset. Then set up TWRP with Android 9.0 and 10 support, which works flawlessly on the K20 pro and Mi 9t pro models "TWRP 3.3.1-15 Unofficial by mauronofrio". Then upload the Magisk zip file immediately when you log in to the TWRP screen. After you do this, you can install any Custom Rom file. Or you could have a Global ROM loaded with TWRP.
Why don't you use Orangefox recovery version _07 and with proper settings and preparation you could have it ready to receive OTA?

I made a guide before: https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/how-to/flashing-orangefox-recovery-mi-9t-pro-t3980579
Orangefox is basically a TWRP based but with more features I guess, the most important one being the ability to survive OTAs, for which you will have to apply in settings and then flash a recovery ROM through it so that the recovery will create an OTA_BACK folder in your internal storage, this will make sure you survive the recovery after OTA.

[Guide] Flash MIUI OTA/Stock/Any MIUI based ROM from recovery without bricking device

Code:
/*
* Your warranty is now void.
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
* thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed.
* Please do some research if you have any concerns.
* YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*/
A guide to flash MIUI OTA/Stock/Any MIUI based rom from recovery without any bootloops or bricking device.
First things first, if you haven't done any modifications to your device (not even unlocked bootloader), then this guide is probably not for you. Just update via the Updater app. If you want to unlock bootloader and root read this guide first then come back.
Now if you have unlocked bootloader with TWRP installed and encrypted device then you can flash full ROM from TWRP without any issues.
Staying on an encrypted device is recommend for better security.
To check if your device is encrypted or not go to Phone Settings > Passwords & security > Privacy > Encryption & credentials > check if it shows encrypted or not.
To decrypt your internal storage (Not recommended):
Make sure you have a backup of your data copied in PC.
- In TWRP go to Wipe and select Format Data(don't go to advanced). Type yes and format data. [This process will format all your data so make sure your data is backed up].
- Go back to TWRP home and Reboot > Recovery.
- Reboot > System.
Now if you check again in Phone settings it'll show "Phone not encrypted".
If you have a decrypted device and want to flash MIUI rom or OTA through recovery you'll face bootloop.
Then there are two solutions to overcome this issue:
1. After flashing full MIUI rom through TWRP you need to format data again. But you will have to backup your data to PC everytime as your internal will be formatted. And then you would have to go through the hassle of setting up your phone which takes atleast 15 mins.
2. A better solution is to use another recovery like OrangeFox recovery. It has a special MIUI OTA support. So you can flash MIUI OTA and any MIUI based rom from recovery without bootloop, formatting data or bricking device in any way.
Here's how to use OrangeFox recovery:
Make sure you have a backup of your data copied in PC.
These steps work for both encrypted and non-encrypted devices
- Download the stock MIUI Recovery ROM for your region or any other MIUI based custom rom of your choice, and copy it to your phone’s storage.
- Download the OrangeFox recovery zip from here.
- If you don't have any recovery installed right now then extract the recovery.img file from the zip and follow the "Flashing TWRP" steps from here
- If you already have TWRP then go to Install > flash zip normally. Your device will boot into OrangeFox recovery automatically in 5 seconds.
- Go to the Menu > tap on OrangeFox settings icon in top right corner, and enable these under MIUI OTA settings :
1. Support MIUI incremental OTA
2. Include system in OTA survival
3. Incremental OTA signature verification
4. Prevent auto reboot after installing OTA
5. Disable DM-Verity
6. Disable Forced Encryption (Don't enable this if you have an encrypted device already and want to stay encrypted)
7. Aggressive stock recovery deactivation
- Now go to the “Wipe” menu :
1. If already on a MIUI based rom and flashing your current MIUI rom zip then select data, cache, and dalvik.
2. If coming from a non MIUI based rom to MIUI based one or if switching from current MIUI based rom to completely different MIUI based one then select data, cache, dalvik, system, vendor.
- Now go to "Install" and flash your MIUI ROM. (This is just a one time process.)
- After the ROM is flashed, OrangeFox will start the "OTA_BAK" process, which will backup your system and boot partitions into the /sdcard/Fox/OTA directory. You must NOT delete any of the files in the /sdcard/Fox/OTA directory. If you do, then incremental OTA updates will most definitely fail.
- Reboot > system.
Now when MIUI notifies you that there is an update:
- Download the update, using the MIUI updater app/official website.
- If on an encrypted device allow it to reboot automatically to OrangeFox. If decrypted, boot to recovery manually and under miui OTA settings enable the Disable Forced Encryption option first and then flash OTA from recovery.
- OrangeFox will install the update automatically (this might take several minutes).
- Your phone will reboot automatically upon completion of the installation of the MIUI OTA update (If it doesn't then reboot manually).
- After this, you will not need to flash a full rom any more.
- Enjoy your updated MIUI

Well the only reason I didn't mention willow is I'm not sure if orangefox supports willow or not... although I think willow support was added after 10.1 stable version and it's the same file as of ginkgo....
Yes you need to backup your internal storage and every app as you will lose all data/apps/internal storage files.

Yes you can root eu.. I'm using rooted eu without any issues....you will still receive updates, no need to uninstall root...but when you install the update you have to flash magisk zip again as after updating you will lose root...so after updating rom, flash magisk and everything will be back to normal.

yes it'll also work in encrypted devices but under miui ota settings don't check disable encryption option so that you can still have an encrypted internal.. Yes you need to flash your current miui recovery rom once you flash orangefox. It's just a one time process for your current rom. Just wipe data, cache, dalvik nothing else.

1. Now if i flash Magisk, do i need to flash Universal DM-Verity and ForceEncrypt disabler zip? or OF will take care of it
2. if i want to flash others custom rom and after that change my mind and restore MIUI back, will ota still work from there? Or i need to repeat the whole process again?
