Any way to use 3rd party app for gestures? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Hi!
I just upgraded to android 11. On Android 10 I used Vivid NG for gestures but because overscan has been disabled on Android 11 it's not working.
Has anyone found a way to get around it? I want to keep using gestures but I don't care for goggles side swipe too go back - it interferes too much with the apps I use

Hi Thaiban,
Thanks for the reply! I am rooted - that should I do? I tried a module for fullscreen navigation but it was still goggles gestures.

If I change to 3 button the navbar is still visible both in immersive and fullscreen. Also chrome keeps closing a few seconds after opening. I guess I'll just have to do with google's gestures for now ?
Thanks for the help anyway ?

In my thread I have a mod available via substratum to remove/hide 3 button navigation bar. You just need to have a 3rd party gestures app already setup before enabling the overlay. If you don't care to mod the pixel launcher (the purpose of my mod), then just install the apk in the second post and just build the top overlay. The last post on the thread has a picture showing what it is.

I've always had issues with the regular substratum in Android 10 and have since been using Substratum Lite. That's what I recommend my users to use. Give substratum lite a try.

The problem is that now I can't access Now On Tap.
Can you guys think with me for a work around to this problem! Thanks
Anyone.. !?

Nav Bar Disable!

I know some people are looking for this. I have been searching through a lot of posts and found some Apk's that didn't work or worked through the Samsung theme blaba. I found one that works without too much trouble, install and reboot! Sometimes it will ask to be Uninstalled when you delete a app. Just click cancel, sorry for original maker but I cannot find the post where I found the Apk.
Make sure to have an alternate way of navigating before installing!

I love the concept but long home press stops working, and alternatives to the nav bar dont work in secure mode.
Does any one know of a working navbar height reducer?
I have tried a few apk's that were working on S8+ but they have no effect on Note 8.
Thanks in advance

What I'd prefer is the ability to see my nav icons only across the entire system, across all apps, but make the background of the nav bar transparent. Using no themes. Stock. Does that make sense? Things are transparent whilst I'm on the home screen, naturally. So that's not an issue. But across all apps? That's what I'd LOVE to have.

I believe both of those are the same because I am having the same issue. I think the problem is my fingers are too fat to properly hit those smaller icons. :silly:
Probably.
Have you tried reducing the DPI in developer options?
This also has the effect of reducing nav bar size.

ADB to restore 2 button navigation

Not sure if this is the right place for this but does anyone know if this adb command still works to restore 2 button nav now that the 4XL has been released?
adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.twobutton
I've been trying to use full gesture nav since I got my 4XL a few days ago and I hate it. Looking for any way possible to get the pill back.

If you go into settings on your Pixel and search for Navigation - you will see there is an option to turn off Gestures and use the old Navigation - I prefer that way much better too - can't get used to Gestures - at least you have the option to use it when you want and go back to the old way when you want.
Hope that helps.

That's the first place I went but the 4 XL only gives you the 3 button option and I don't want to go back to that either. Feels like a rock and a hard place.
I believe that Artem from Android Police stated that the adb command no longer works, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Ah man, thanks for this! I've really been trying to get used to using the gestures, but I need a break! Gesture navigation

Hello, since the android 10 update (ww) the navigation gestures have changed. I seem to have lost the original rog style swipe up from home etc, without any bars etc showing onscreen. Is it the same for everyone?

Yes is same. I like it, but we cannot use it across other launchers
I am using an app called Hide Navigation Bar to hide the white bar, which works great. I tried to use xda's Navigation Gestures for the same purpose but it does not work well in fullscreen landscape game, while Hide Navigation Bar does. That being said, I hope ASUS can implement an official hiding gesture hint feature just like what Samsung does.
I'm using the "adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural" command to re-enable gestures in Nova Launcher, but it's not a perfect solution and resets to standard navigation when the phone reboots.

Many thanks to you both. I'll have a look at those methods, as google's implementation is uuuuugly compared to asus!
Im using these two apps and I can say my experience is even better than what I had on a9 because now I can cboose different options and actions for my gestures
Xda navigation gestures, to hide the navbar (other apps I have tried didnt work) it also has the issue when using the phone in landscape mode the volume control bar goes out of the screen
Fluid navigation gestures, now this app offers everything I could have asked for!

How To Guide [No Root] Gesture navigation on third party launchers

Hello, everyone.
Lately I have been looking for a way to disable navigation bar on Stock rom, and use gestures on third party launchers, for example on Nova launcher. After trying different things, here what worked for me:
First, download Fluid N. G. app and set it (make sure the app stays working and the battery saver doesn't kill it). Don't hide the navbar using Fluid N. G., not only this won't work, but also will cause the navbar to reappear after every unlock. So, don't use the hide option from Fluid N. G. (see the screenshot below).
You also need Tasker app, So install it.
Since the device is not rooted, you need to grant some permissions for the Tasker app, in order to work. To do this, follow the instructions Here.
Once done, open Tasker app, select profiles and click "Import profile". The file that you need to import is in attachements. Enable it, reboot your device (wait for few seconds) and VoilĂ  !.
I tried to keep it as simple as possible. The results are attached below. Good luck!

By the way, the profile extension must be .prj.xml not .prf.xml.

I wish there was another way to keep fng running in background, instead of in recents always

Thanks for your help. I do have root access but no idea how to do it through build props, so I will stick with this Tasker method. Cheers!
One thing though, FNG bottom gesture isn't as responsive as Miui gesture. Takes like a second to open recents. Found a good FNG file and imported its settings. Better now.

Not tested this myself yet, but i doubt this was removed on Android 12 or Miui 13, this is kind of a basic function.
That build.prop is telling the OS the device has hardware keys for navigation. I've been using this for perhaps 10 years now .

This will only hide the navigation bar, gestures will not work, so before doing that, you need to install a gesture navigation app like Fluid n g.
From my understanding, in android 11 google disabled navigation gestures when not using the system launcher. Probably because third party launchers failed to integrate those animations correctly, which made them look laggy ( same when using fluid n. g. unfortunately)
You can see that in android 10 phones. When you change the launcher, the gestures will remain but there will be no animations.
So this is probably their way to avoid it.
if you look in the system Ui code you will find something like:
if( the launcher is system launcher)
enable gestures
else disable them.
if this is the case. A patched system ui app should do the job. i'll root my device this monday, and try to decompile the systemUI app to see if that's the source of our problem.

well they said it has been the case since android 10. But i had a "honor" phone with gestures working fine on android 10 (but of course with no animations when using another launcher) .
Anyway, read that xda article to fully anderstand the issue.
