Solved!!! Android Auto replacement - 8" Dex or HDMI touchscreen in the Uk - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Accessories

So my car doesn't have android auto. And I'd like to use larger screen for navigation and Spotify etc.
The screen couldn't be bigger than about 8 or 9 inches.
I can't find a decent portable wireless HDMI or Dex touchscreen I cam connect to my Note in the car. There is a new screen on kickstarter which would do what I want -airview 2- but its too big.
Any ideas? Alternative solutions? Items need to be available in the UK
Thanks

So after much research, I have the answer and it is really SO simple. There are two options I have used so far.
I ordered a Galaxy Tab S5e. I ordered it used but in perfect condition. Cost me about £250. A smaller screen tablet would have been fine but the S5e has a brilliant screen at a very low price. I mount it in the car with two vent mounts with magnetic attachments so it is super quick to remove.
Option 1: Head Unit Reloaded app on the play store. Works wirelessly and wired. What could be simpler!!! Does Carplay and Android Auto. Has a bit of lag, though.
Option 2: add in a £50 carplay wired dongle from Amazon. Carplay works brilliantly (I have an iPhone too) - Android Auto is a lower resolution when I tried it - still working on that. No lag. Works really well so far.
The only issue with option 2 is that the tablet charges the phone over the cable. To get round that I have ordered a Lavasync cable which enables USB OTG and charging at the same time. Will report back.

So the app does carplay too? It says only android auto, I haven't tested carplay yet.
Thanks for the tip though, works really great with android auto!

No photos at the moment but I can certainly take some. It's not 'installed' - it's held in place by magnets on vent mounts so it can be removed very quickly. There's not much to see - it just looks like a 10inch tablet floating over the centre air vents, with one cable coming out of it!
I use a Galaxy Tab S5e - but smaller tablets would work just as well. It doesn't need to have GPS (the S5e does not) but a decent screen helps.
If you go down the dongle route, there are loads of identical ones on Amazon but wired ones apparently work better. I chose this one: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088D31MM1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LQHIFbP00GPDQ
If you want to charge the tablet and phone at the same time, you need one of these: https://lavasimulcharge.com/product...ers/lavasync-usb-c-adapters-hubs/lavasync-1u/
Lacasync also do one not in a case (and smaller) which you could bury in your dashboard - the OEM version. When I chatted to them they said it would be fine covered in sugru. I chose the one in the case as I'm keeping separate.
You will also need high quality USBC cables.
If you would rather not pay for the dongle, download HeadUnit Reloaded from the play store on to the tablet. There is a trial version so you can test it. Then connect the tablet to the phone wired or wirelessly and Android Auto will work. I found there was a bit of lag that way but it wasn't bad. You will need to play with the settings to get a good image on a hi res tablet screen.

It did work but now doesn't. Maybe because I am on iOS 14.2 beta. The dongle still works though! Photo below of the tablet (not in the car!) on carplay using the dongle

Samsung, where is my dock!

I don't know about you guys, but the day I bought a dock for my BlackBerry it changed my life. I can live without one for a while, but it's just not the same. Samsung and 3rd parties need to step up their game.
You can always make your own, it's not like they promised it like they did with the Galaxy S phones (took couple of months for them to get it out).
I had both the car and home dock for my Nexus One. I may be able to live without the home dock, but the car dock is a must for me!

Watchu need a home dock for?
I'd take a landscape one that would let me have the phone on clock mode in landscape... Other then that... pass...
Car dock would be uber useful but I bet the Nexus One dock works just fine.

I wanted a landscape dock for that exact reason for my G1. I really hope to see one for the Nexus S.
I am hoping that Pro Clip will come out with a decent car dock soon as well.
I could also go for a dock with speakers for work as well. I like to listen to music and Sirius XM
Miss my Nexus dock.
It was really nice... had connection at the bottom u didn't have to plug into usb... and a the dock acts as a a2dp hub!
but ya... prob not gonna happen for the ns
a little handy work and you can make a real nice DIY dock as it was done on the SGS

The Nexus One dock was designed specifically for the N1. The N1 is the only phone that will fit and get any use out of it unfortunately. I loved my N1 dock and right now it's what I miss the most with my NS. I bought a $30 universal USB car dock and it it super cheap feeling and is already loose.
The fact that I have to manually connect a USB connector anytime I want to charge it isn't a huge deal, but definitely not a plus. And then with my N1 dock, it would launch the car home when it was docked. Just super useful and convenient. I hope Samsung can release a dock for the NS of equal quality.

The MT4G has them on its side... and HTC released a landscape dock a few weeks ago.
I agree about the docking on the NS.... one of my biggest gripes about the phone.
I'd like to see them use NFC to automatically launch Car Home/Clock.

Official Samsung Vehicle Navigation Mount

I have been searching for both a vehicle mount as well as a desktop dock for my Nexus S since I got it in December. While there have been a few 3rd party solutions trickling into existence, it's nice to see some official Samsung love! I can't post links yet, but check it out on their website: samsung.com by searching for ECS-V1A3BEGSTA or BECS-V1A3BEG (both seem to be model numbers). There currently isn't a price and if you add it to your cart it says it's on back order (for $0). But at least we know it's coming! Hope to see an official desk dock soon as well.
Also, interesting, it says it has an integrated charger (which is one thing I really want in a car mount), but I fail to see any evidence of it in the pictures. I'm curious how it works. I would also really like to see an integrated audio output, preferably (if possible) through the same micro USB connection as the charging and then allow for the 3.5mm output to split from the mount. This is what I used to do with my original MT3G and it was great to only have to make one connection to the phone.

Interestingly the back plate of the dock appears to have a cutout for the camera and speaker, but they are in the wrong position (wrong side in each case) given how the phone sits in the dock. I am also curious how they are going to do integrated charging. Perhaps those images aren't a final product shot.

It took Samsung to officially release the Galaxy S docks about 3-4 months after its release in the U.S. So I'm assuming it's going to take just as long for this dock to come out.

Indeed, this would make more sense. I'm unsure how they would have integrated charging unless they somehow had a different back plate for the phone that would allow for conductive charging.
I'll still pick it up for $40 when it's available. It's a lot better than the the "universal" options out there. It is too bad the Nexus S doesn't have the contact/charging pins like the Nexus One did - that was a nice car dock to own (although a bit more pricey).

Keyboard solutions?

Has anyone found a good keyboard set up for the nexus 7? I am starting school back up soon and would like to find an elegant and well functioning keyboard set up to take notes on my little tablet but haven't seen anything on here that catches my eye.
I can't from the transformer and the dock is the only thing I miss!
I recently saw that Samsung came out with a seven inch tab student bucks bundled that came with as little keyboard dock. Not sure if that would be compatible though.
Anyone find a good keyboard, dock, and our cars case for this?
Thanks

I second the Thinkoutside folding keyboard. I had read about it on one of these boards and recently picked up a used one to be used with both my Nexus 7 and HP Touchpad. It is nice and portable, and very comfortable (in my opinion) to use.
You can try and see whether you can pick one up on Craigslist or eBay.
Thanks a lot I will check it out. Do you guys use something separate to prop the tab up?
Edit: can't seem to find out in stock almost anywhere. Pretty pricy too for the few I found on eBay. Some seem to have a little cradle and some don't. Any difference? I'll keep an eye out though.
Any other suggestions?

The Verbatim Folding Bluetooth Keyboard is really good. The keys are wide and have good response. It's made for the iPad, so obviously their are some iOS specific keys that don't work, but other than that it's solid.
I posted a deal on a Motorola one the other day, it has a trackpad and Android hotkeys. If you can find one for a similar price then it would be worth it, otherwise I would suggest either the bigger Logitech ($50-$60) one or the HP Touchpad keyboard ($30).

I ordered a Zippy keyboard from NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823701033, and a bit cheaper at Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Zippy-FULL-Function-Bluetooth-Keyboard/dp/B004MMESVY
It is a bit smaller than I expected but it works well with the 7 as it is faster than the on screen keyboard and I only type with about 4 or 5 fingers anyway. Can be paired with 6 BT devices and switch between them. I haven't used it much yet, but it seems sturdy and well made.
I have a book type case that I prop up when using the keyboard and snagged a $5 Motorola BT mouse the other day on woot.

Logitech K810 BT Keyboard

I picked up the Logitech K810 keyboard and love it... It is rechargeable using a standard micro usb so you only need one charger/cable if you are travelling, the battery life is amazing and if you turn off the keyboard backlight completely I can see getting over a week of use... The keys are a decent size and feel good...

I have an android device and a laptop I would like to use this keyboard with. The laptop does not have bluetooth. If I was to plug the keyboard into the laptop through USB would I be able to use it without bluetooth? And from there would I be able to use the buttons to switch to bluetooth use on my tablet?
Hopefully this makes sense...

The micro USB is only for charging as far as I know, however you can get a cheap monoprice BT adapter for $10 and then use the buttons on the keyboard to swap back and forth... That is what I have done and now I just need to find a mouse that is rechargeable with a micro USB port and switches back and forth as easily...

I too have this keyboard, bought it two months ago as I wanted a something small, backlit and wireless for my pc. This was the only one I could find really. Bought a small Nano Bluetooth USB thingy with it which allows me to use it on my PC. Works brilliant.
One of the best keyboards I've ever owned. I do a lot of typing (documents) and I really like this keyboard. If you can live without the numpad keys it's just perfect.
Good things:
+ battery life is excellent even with lights on (we are talking weeks here)
+ charging via Micro USB.
+ instant switch with multiple devices. FN + F1 is PC, FN + F2 is Laptop, FN + F3 is Nexus 10. Could not be better. And it's connected in like 1 maybe 2 seconds.
+ quality. It's a very solid keyboard
+ small, so easy to take with you on the go. Fits inside my laptop sleeve (13" Ultrabook) with my laptop inside too. Take it everywhere I go.
Bad things:
- the price I guess, but you do get what you pay for.
If this came with some sort of integrated, multi-touch trackpad (maybe like the slide-out on the Moto kb) it'd be perfect, even for a little more money. Soooo close.

A few weeks ago I even did a full tear down of it because it hadn't been cleaned since I bought it. Logitech is expensive but their stuff lasts. With the exception of their G35 headphones.. Serious design flaw with the way the speakers are attached..

Samsung Dex low quality apps issue

Hopefully this isn't mentioned some where else, tried searching around. But, I'm using note 9 with hdmi, a lot of games and even some apps look low quality. From what I can tell the UI of Dex looks normal and a few others things like web browser stuff. Even a small handful of games appear to run with no quality issues, and most non-game apps. But when I switch to screen mirroring, everything looks perfect, so I don't get the issue. I also had an extra question about screen mirroring, is there a way I can have the screen off or show all black? That way I can play games on my monitor without leaving the screen on? Let me know if y'all need any example images of games looking low quality, to be clear, a game will look low quality even "full screen" in dex while in screen mirror it looks extremely sharp and high quality like it's on the phone screen itself.
Hi
What type of USB-C to HDMI adapter you have?
If it is not Samsung DEX then picture quality is poor, by purpose. Samsung wants you to buy/use their adapter.
I have few cables/adapters but full resolution works only with DEX stand I bought. It was made for Note 8.
Screen mirroring works with any cable.
Go to shop and test...
My very old Samsung S2 and even Note 3 accepts any adapter.
Good luck.

Seems from both comments, official dex cable will be needed. My monitor is 1080p, shows its on 1080p in settings, picture is full screen. Browser looks normal, videos like youtube play what appears to be perfect quality, which is why im so confused.
Could you try a game like pokemon masters ex? Its one of the ones thatll show normal size, but looks low quality, very pixely, then switch to mirroring to see if theres a difference? Cause if i switch to mirroring it looks how it should on my 1080p monitor.
Thanks for the help so far. If swapping adapter is the solution then awesome, i really want to use dex and like using it at the same time haha.
Edit-- What type of USB-C to HDMI adapter you have?
Its an 8 in 1 hub from amazon and brand is bqypower, goofy name but yeah. It has hdmi and vga out, tried both and got the same results.

I have the official Samsung DeX cable: https://www.jarcomputers.com/Samsung-DeX-Cable_prod_CABPTSAMSUNGEEI3100FBEGWW.html
I tried 3 games that I have on my phone and ran them both in DeX mode and in Screen Mirroring via the cable. Below are screenshots of the DeX mode running these games. Obviously I couldn't take pictures while in Screen Mirroring but the quality was the same in both. My phone is set to FHD+ and my TV has a FHD resolution screen as well.
Like on 8 ball, in Dex mode it looks rough and pixely. Then when I switch to screen mirroring it looks a lot better, even compared to it on Dex in full screen. Is this really because of the cable not being from samsung? Here's an image of the balls in full screen on dex. Just seems weird how it looks better in mirroring compared to dex on the same cable. Even the mouse in dex mood looks a little off compared to mirroring which it looks like a high def mouse with no rough edges or anything.

Don't really know as I've never had a quality problem here. But also never tried any other HDMI to Type-C cable so can't be sure if that's the cause either.
