High Brightness Mode WITHOUT Rooting??! - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Does anyone who already has the 5 (or know someone that does) know whether or not High Brightness Mode is FINALLY accessible WITHOUT having to root??
If so, please let us know! I just pre-ordered the phone 2 weeks ago, and it will be my first Pixel. Really hoping they allow this!! :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance!!

Ok. Disappointing, but not surprising. lol
Thanks!
At least they made it brighter this year. The Pixel 4's MAX brightness when Auto Brightness is enabled is 610 nits, where the 5's is 670. I still wish it was in the 800-900s (or more) region though. But at least they improved it.

color calibration?

I saw someone who did a really indepth color calibration for his Nexus 6, i cannot find the thread anywhere...help?
(note: I am color blind, so calibrating the colors to be perfect for normal eyes helps me out more than you can ever imagine)
(note 2: no, the color blind options do not help me out, my eyes are abnormally color blind, and i am used to not compensating for it, so the compensation screws me up worse)
It's in the lean kernel thread. Do not know how to add the link from the XDA app. For a cooler/more blue screen, its 237,235,255
for anyone else who is looking here is the link
Best RGB setting
Is it possible to get the screen to look like the Note 4s? (Note 4 is "Cooler" as opposed to the "warmer" N6.)
Here is a youtube video showing the comparisons of both displays. Really good comparison IMHO. Google Nexus 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4
I do prefer the Note 4s. This is almost a deal breaker for me to get the N6 over the Note 4.
But I really want to like the N6... Dual speakers,6inches,stock android, small bezels...

I wish i could see what it looks like when tweaked to match the Note 4s. Even better... Side by side with a Note 4.
I dont really understand about the 7000k vs 7400k etc... But if they could make the Nexus 6 look better like the Note 4s then why isnt it set to 7400k in the first place?

Certain panels run warmer or cooler by default. That's just how it is. Some people prefer warmer panels. I think the nexus 6 panel is pretty neutral out of the box but i run mine on the cooler side anyway.

Does it look exactly like the Note 4 from your experience? Like have you seen it in store and compared it? I think the brightness is lower on the N6 though...
No I haven't done a direct comparison with the Note 4. I don't have or want that phone so I have no need to compare them.
Do you mind taking some pics/vids before and after from default to cooler?
I wrote a wall of text after but I'm on my phone and somehow it got lost :/
Anyways basically I wanted to say that it might help more people who are on the fence about this display and it may shed some light on the positives of the screen vs the other flagship competitor the Note 4.
Ive searched all over the web and I've yet to see anything comparing the different settings.

I have both. Note 4 all the way, looks nicer than nexus 6 and more premium. The screen is way brighter than nexus 6 and no one can deny that and sharper. If the time goes back 1 month would never by a nexus 6. Also don't get me wrong nexus is a good device overall you just need some sort of work around to get it how you want it. Note 4 is good out of the box.

But if you tweak it, doesn't it look much better and is it slightly on par with the Note 4? I know the brightness is low on the N6 but as long as it's a little brighter than my Note 2 I'm OK with that. And they both have the same resolution, is that why the Note 4 is sharper because of its smaller display?
I really like everything about the Nexus 6 but the Note 4s display blew me away.
Is the only way to change the color settings via a custom kernel? I'm happy with stock kernel, but would live to tweak my colors a bit. Thanks

Thanks for the answer.
I hope this is not heresy, but after playing with a few different kernels on my N5, for me it just became a)an obsession and b)a hassle. However, I did like the tools to do the display color changes. I will wait for the CM official rom or maybe play with one of the kernels available. It would be nice to have the stock kernel with only the color capabilities, but I suppose if you mod a kernel, you might as well put in additional features. And yeah I know its easy enough to flash a custom kernel and go back to stock, just my laziness.

You are right. Adaptive brightness is crap on the 1+3. It changes all of a sudden and gets very low. Or in bright situations, it doesn't change at all in order to adapt to the new lightening conditions.

Any idea how to change screen calibration?

After November's patch we have 90Hz on all the time basically, but this also means that now the screen in dark mode is really green. Is there any way to adjust colour temperature on the Pixel 4 XL so as to correct this calibration mess? I know my S10+ can tweak colour temperature. The three available settings on Android 10 are not enough as there is no RGB adjustment.
Thanks all!
Edit: Just to be clear, rooting is not an option. Alternatively, if somebody knows where I can submit feedback to Google to resolve this horrible calibration that too would be appreciated. All grays are green. Ugh
You don't have 90 on all the time unless you've enabled developer and set it as such. The green occurs during the switching so you may want to consider enabling developer and turning on 90 all the time which can be done without root. I can say that it uses less battery than AOD (as an example) so it may be that this will fix the problem.
Unfortunately your information is outdated. 90Hz is on all the time since November patch for the Pixel 4 XL except under some limited conditions when one is not interacting with the display. I also confirmed via UFO test. The only way to get rid of the severe green tinting is to turn off smooth display which is BS. Anyway, I've decided that this product, despite its stellar camera and great physical design is unfortunately too flawed.
Battery life is poor and anxiety inducing, the display is awful (green tint, severe black crush at lower brightness settings), and even Bluetooth functionality has issues. Sure, almost all of these can be fixed by software (except battery life) but that may never happen or may take months or years to materialize. Unfortunately for $1,500 CAD that's just not good enough. There is a lot I love about the phone but this display crap is the last straw for me. Maybe Pixel 5 will do better.
Very sad and disappointed

There are a number of apps in the Playstore that can adjust display calibration. I used one in the early days of the Pixel 2 XL, and it worked well.

Interesting perspectives. I had a feeling that there may perhaps be something wrong with my device at lower brightness seeing as I cannot fathom how DisplayMate could possibly rate the Pixel 4 XL display the way they did if the display was the way mine is. If you look at my post history as well I too praised the display at one point, but my praise was (in my case) misplaced if you take into account low brightness. This was, by far, the worst OLED I've used ever, which leads me to my comment below...

Ultimately this is what I decided to do. I cannot see how this can be normal. It is truly awful. I think you cannot appreciate just how awful it is because no amount of explanation here will quite paint the picture. Since I have the S10+ and the iPhone 11 Pro, I had put them side by side just to confirm I'm not somehow going crazy and biasing my opinion and the difference was so stark that it made the Pixel 4 XL look like it was a $200 budget phone. The Pixel 4 XL has no colour detail, suffers from terrible black crush, and is completely miscalibrated with all colours at low brightness tending to green.
Last but not least, those apps you mention are all filters. There is no way outside of rooting to actually adjust the RGB balance. For this expensive of a phone, that's just not acceptable and neither is waiting for the issue to be addressed.
I may try another Pixel 4 XL just to see how it compares but I do feel that this isn't as isolated as one may think.
It's very annoying. I manually disable Smooth display in the evenings now. Hoping Google can fix this.

I do wish Google gave us more options like OnePlus to adjust the white point etc, that would solve things to some extent as most people prefer or are use to different white points

That's the part that I'm not willing to bet the $1,500 on. I guess I should also be clear that if I disable smooth display - that is I go back to 60Hz - the colour calibration issue is largely resolved. The colour reproduction and black crush are still there at very low or minimum brightness, but not as bad or as prominent as with the 90Hz calibration. This also does not affect the Pixel 4 devices the same because Pixel 4 (non-XL) reverts to 60Hz for any brightness lower than ~40% even after November patch.

Agreed on the "having more options". With that said, I only care about that because the display is as bad as it is at low brightness. If I have time tonight, while I still haven't sent the phone back, I may just try to do a side-by-side comparison for you guys with the S10+ and iPhone 11 Pro. The differences are truly night and day (no pun intended). I am so, so disappointed that this is even an issue. I genuinely enjoyed the Pixel experience way more than I liked any of my Android devices so far. I stayed away from generations 1-3 because I wanted them to find their groove and finally felt that this was the time to jump in, only to be disappointed again. I will likely try another device just to see if it makes a difference and just how much, but I doubt it will be much better. Just as an FYI, in a completely dark room I run my brightness at minimum setting since it reduces glare. A good, properly calibrated OLED should still be able to produce a decent picture. The Pixel 4 XL, my Pixel 4 XL, is far from decent.
Edit: By the way, here is one really good example of it from Reddit https://camo.githubusercontent.com/...3682f45785a68422f666236646162656237642e706e67. It's not my phone, but this is the exact issue. Look at the grays - they are literally green. Here is another set of reports from Reddit as well https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/ds6rd6/pixel_4_xl_screen_tint/. I am going to try to do my own photos tonight to post here.
I don't have anything like what you show in the link you posted, I'm forced on here since it turns out it doesn't change battery life much in my use. AOD uses something on the order of twice as much as an example. In any event I'm a home theater enthusiast and have spent some time calibrating, not I'm an expert time, but time enough to recognize blooming and other common display problems and I don't see that night or day at any brightness. If I did I'd have to agree, that wouldn't work for me.
Okay so I was able to reproduce this issue at will now and can say exactly how you can test for it. Basic display settings are Ambient EQ On, Ambient Display Off, Smooth Display On (90Hz enabled), Dark Mode Enabled, Night-shift Enabled, November patch though I think the same issue affects the launch software but to a lesser extent. For ease of testing, turn off auto-adjusting brightness. Once you have this set, here is what you do to see the problem yourself (note that the settings I mentioned are just what I had set when I tested this so I recommend using the same so its apples to apples comparison):
1. Make sure you have the default wallpaper set for this test since it is the easiest to detect issues with it.
2. Pull down the quick settings shade, drop the brightness slider all the way to zero, then close the quick settings.
3. Turn off the display by pressing the power button, wait maybe 5-10 seconds, then turn it back on. You will notice that the screen (at least in even a moderately lit room) is barely readable. It should now be red-shifted.
4. Pull down the quick settings again and start moving the brightness slider from 0% to 100% slowly, then repeat the process of moving the slider back and forth for a bit and note the colour changes. You will notice that the true-ish gray will be somewhere around 75% brightness or higher. Anything below this will start to red-shift quite severely (your grays will look more red/purple).
5. Set the brightness slider to 100% and close the quick settings, then swipe down to open them again.
6. Start moving the brightness slider from 100% towards zero and pay attention to the screen colour. You will notice that true gray quickly starts to degrade to greenish-gray, then quite severely green, until finally the brightness collapses severely around 10%-15% of the slider. Your display is now severely green shifted and moving the brightness slider back and forth will just show this effect switching to true gray around 70%-75% and up, and to severe green shift for anything below that.
7. Finally, drag the brightness down to zero again, then turn off your display via the power button. Turn on the display again and move the slider around again. Your display is now no longer green shifted, but it is now red-shifted. Repeating the same steps over and over will result in the same behaviour, back and forth red-shift when screen is turned off with brightness at zero, green shift when brightness is turned down after the device engaged 90Hz refresh rate and so on...
I actually recorded a video of this happening and will see how I can share it with Google.
So glad I found this post, I thought I was the only person experiencing this. do we try and exchange the device? Or wait for a software update?

I am actually talking to Google as I type this. I sent them my video and they confirmed the problem. They are escalating it now with all of the detail that I have provided so far, but they cannot tell me if or when it will be resolved at the moment. They are not stating that this is a hardware issue or an issue with my device. They believe that it is firmware/software, introduced or maybe made much worse by the November patch. I did inform them that the issue existed with the October patch, but it was made much worse with the November patch. Interestingly enough, while testing with them we confirmed that the green shift occurs even if smooth display is completely off or the smooth display is forced on. Turning off smooth display eliminates most of the red shift (though not all).
To answer the latter part of your question more specifically - this could end up being similar to the Pixel 2 XL POLED fiasco so there may not be a way for Google to fix this in software. Whether you are willing to take that risk is up to you. I am going to send my device back and am trying to get the Google dev team to update me on the progress of the issue regardless. At some point in the near future I'd like to be able to re-buy the Pixel 4 XL free of this problem.

Perhaps but those days are behind me. I simply don't have time to do this any more. I need the device to work solid out of the box. If you have the Pixel 4 XL, were you able to follow my instructions and reproduce the issue?

Didn't make a difference, I got the white point better to how I like but the green tint bug is still there, deciding weather it's a deal breaker or not, it's really annoying

What settings did you use in color control to get the white point you like?

i agree with not having time, I don't have the time to try to replicate this issue. I use my phone in my bed in the dark all the time, with a dark theme and low brightness and don't have an issue that i've noticed.

Camera greyish pictures

Hi, I've just got my p4xl and when taking photos I keep getting this issue were some pictures looked washed out possibly even greyish. I'm taking these pictures in fluorescent lights (like most work places). Pictures below show the difference.
I'm guessing, with these to pics, it's because of the screen being on in the 2nd pic and it changed the white balance.

The screen is on in both pictures and I never had this problem on my old pixel 2.

Yeah but one has it facing forward and the other is off angle. I'm guessing you don't have your Pixel 2 XL still to compare?

No but I took thousands of pictures like these on my Pixel 2 previously and the white balance never did this. Also I've lost the ability to add portrait blur in Google photos

Well I still think it's a white balancing issue. I had the Pixel 2 XL as well.
Adding portrait blur in Google Photos isn't the camera app. Are you trying to add it to people or things because it only works on people. If you don't get the little pop-up for "Blur-background", try going to edit the photo and if you go to the sliders, you might see the "blur" option.

It's definitely a white balance issue but how do I fix this? The same camera app on the P2 doesn't have this problem.
I know the blur has nothing to do with the camera app, just noticed I couldn't do on my new P4XL when I could on my P2. I know it was part of the feature drop just expected it to be on my new phone too

Try using the "auto" adjust in Google Photos. Helps a lot with white balance issues.
Portrait blur is in your new phone. Did you try what I suggested?

Yeah, no blur slider but the toast option doesn't show up to make the picture a portrait pic, which is strange as I have the latest version of Google photos.

And just for clarification, you're trying with people right? Again, the toast option doesn't necessarily always appear. I've had it not appear and I still get the slider.

Yes with people. No slider no toast. Hopefully it will reappear for me soon. Also hope I can find a solution for the bad white balance as I take lots of pictures for work.

Just an example of how well auto does to fix white balance. Just saying.

It does I'm prove it but no where near how it should be. I do appreciate the advice.
Just as another perspective, your initial images certainly don't appear washed out or 'grey'. I think the issue you're picking up on, as EeZeEpEe suggested, is white balanced based. Perhaps you're not aware, one of the differences between the 2xl and 4xl, is that the machine-learning-based white balance algorithm is supposed to produce more natural-looking images under harsh lighting conditions, but as it turns out, some edge cases can end up looking worse instead.

Ah I think you're talking about the really bad white balance issue it used to have?

I never had it even before the fix but that looked pretty terrible.

Went for a run around sunset and took my post run selfie and the first picture the colour is unedited and the colours are off. The second one I had to edit to make the colours looked natural. I don't understand why it does this. Overall I'm happy with quality of the camera but it is a little annoying.
Sorry first post didn't load the picture

I think you uploaded the edited picture a second time. The unedited showed up sideways but I can see the color difference even so.

The unedited one is more like the tone etc that I got with my P2. Although I took a picture today and the colours are fine just wish it would be consistent

I got the Google Pixel 5, what do you need to know?

UPDATE 15 October:
Embargo has now lifted!
I got THREE additional videos now live; the full review, camera, and audio review:
UPDATE 5 October:
I've been informed on 5 Oct to not post anything further on the Pixel 5 until the embargo lifts (which I can't communicate when that is).[/B]
You can find more information about the device via my Twitter feed; incl battery updates, camera shots etc.
Hi everyone,
Seen there's some love for the Pixel 5 here at XDA (Hi again XDA gang!), so as I have the phone in front of me. What do you need to know?
I'm looking to get confirmation from my source to see if I can extract the camera.apk for you, but before sharing any files (including original photos from the Pixel 5), I'm getting it confirmed. Rather be safe than sorry
Anyway, ask away, I'll try my best to answer everything I can.
Oh, and my video on YouTube of the phone (if you don't believe I have the phone), is live on my channel too:
EDIT: Latest YouTube hands-on video has just gone live!

Can you get into ADB shell and report the output of
Code:
cat /proc/mounts
?
How did you get it? Well, yes, we would all like to take a look at apk gcam
Nice! So heavy is it? Im coming from a Note 9 which is a heavy phone. Hoping the P5 is a little lighter in build. What month security update is it on? What color u got?

Hey, thanks!
Can you confirm that you can switch to the Ultra Wide Angle camera in third party apps (Snapchat, Instagram, etc) when doing a pinch zoom out?
Is there an Ambient EQ setting in Settings>Display>Advanced?
How much bright display is?
Can you force 90hz from developer settings?
How is haptics?
How is stereo speakers?
How slow it feels to flagship phones like Pixel 4 or Note 20 Ultra? Especially if someone is using 2020 flagship phones.
How does the screen brightness compare to the 4xl?
The wallpapers on the promotional images are included? Can you share? ?
Since you're able to hold it and use it, is it worth the price they are retailing it for ?
How are the stereo speakers, are they comparable to the 3XL ?
How responsive is it ?
How's the feel of the device, slippery or gritty like the renders suggest? Does it support hdmi output from its usb-c port? Still squeezable? Fp gestures for qs return? Pixel visual core is present? Any feature parity between the normal and ultrawide cam? What's the max slo-mo fps? Anything major is missing? And sorry for asking so many questions. ?

I don't use Snapchat, so can't comment on that. But on IG I can't zoom out, but can zoom in. Same happens when I'm on the S10+, however.

It gets REALLY bright, haven't measured it yet - but I suspect it's above 500 nits.
'Smooth Display' can be enabled via the Display options: 60->90Hz automatically.
There's no additional option in the dev settings
Haptics feel natural, nothing to report, other than it's located at the bottom of the phone.
Stereo speakers upon first impressions are pretty poor; they sound tinny. The S10+ trounces it.
Feels fluid so far, but can'#t really pass much judgement as I've only had it for a short time.

Yup, it's no longer there, unfortunately!
Can you check if these two features are present?
New Google Assistant keyboard dictation: https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1311757613235941377
Back tap gestures (like iOS 14): https://www.xda-developers.com/goog...-tap-gestures-android-11-screenshots-recents/

As for the screenshot: it didn't seem to do anything when I did as the video.

Both features will probably come in a Pixel Feature Drop, then. Thanks for sharing!
How is the screen quality?
IE: coming from a QHD Pixel 4 XL to the FHD Pixel 5?
Add Build.prop file please
What's the screen brightness? Is it brighter than the 4 XL? I have googled everywhere and just no answer about something so important.
Also is the battery life significantly better and do you think it's worth buying coming from a 4 XL?
Edit: nvm just saw your replies! Thank you! Is Ambient EQ available under Settings > Display?
It's not listed on the Store site which is suspicious.
