[Q] Simple n00b Question About ROMs

I'm definitely a noob here, but I've been lurking for over a year, researching, and finally made an account.
I'm stuck with AT&T for awhile. Like most other sensible people on the planet, I want a Droid 3. I thought all hope was lost until I just recently heard that someone finally cracked (rooted) the thing and there are already several custom ROMs out, to my understanding..? Like the Steel Droid ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278056
Does the Steel ROM allow a Droid 3 to work on AT&T networks?
I also read that Negri Electronics is selling custom Droid 3's that work on AT&T's 3G networks, but it's $600.
Is there any hope of getting a D3 with AT&T, or do I have to stick with my beat-up (but still functional) old Tilt 2?
And Yes I searched, but the Droid 3 Root thing is so new there's not much info on it yet.

I have heard of people successfully using a D3 on AT&T, I think you need to unlock the SIM for US networks somehow. Loading a rom like Steel Droid won't make any changes that will allow you to use it on AT&T though.

Hrm... Crap. So currently the only way to get one for AT&T is via Negri Electronics? No one has heard of any other way? 0.o
I don't suppose there's any other phone that can compete with the D3 as far as specs and a full QWERTY keyboard, huh? Bummer, big time

I'm coming from a VZW TP2 and i know people used it on Tmobile and other GSM networks by unlocking the SIM. The way I did it was by calling Verizon and telling them I was going out of the country and they did it for free on the phone, I'm not sure how to do it if you're already on another network or don't activate it with Verizon first (For free). But that's definitely what you should look for, once the SIM is unlocked it should work anywhere as long as you enable roaming.

Simlock or not you can use the droid 3 anywhere in the world but not in the us.
No matter if you use the verizon sim or any other sim.
To do it you need the so called band unlocking which is currently unavailable for the droid 3 and when and if will be, will require a good amount of money.
In short if you need the phone buy a milestone 3/Xt860

...but keep in mind, that while root and recovery are a go for the XT860, there's no custom ROMs working as of yet.

Did a little research, but just to be clear, the Milestone 3 (aka the XT860) is the Canadian version of the D3, released by Bell, correct?
And since it already works in North America, could I simply buy one and use it on AT&T as-is? Or would it also need some sort of unlocking?

[Q] [Urgent help] ATT Nexus 6

Hi -
I'm a bit hard pressed for time here. Will need to order a 32gb variant of the nexus 6 via ATT. The phone will be used in India, so it will be purchased upfront from ATT and unlocked.
My only question is - Will I be able to:
1. Root [I'm guessing yes]
2. Flash custom recovery [i'm guessing yes]
3. Can all traces of ATT crap be removed? [who wants that anyway?]
4. Install custom kernels / roms like PA / CM etc etc [Unclear about this]
If not, is there any other carrier service that can help me In basically converting their network locked phone into what google sells?
Can someone confirm this?

Glanced or read a single thread in here? I'm not trying to be rude, but this is a Nexus and every question is covered by spending three minutes looking in here or going to google.

Unfortunately the Nexus 6 is bootloader locked, encrypted, not rooted and filled with AT&T bloat. Google gave into the carriers demand for control.
I suggest buying a Note 4.

I'm really sorry if it's been asked a ton of times before. I'm not the guy who keeps asking the same questions again and again. But I'm hard pressed for time at the moment. And I'm working out of a limited internet connectivity environment. It would be very helpful if someone could please answer concisely to the point. As long is I'm able to flash customs stuff, I'm all good!

A nexus is a nexus is a nexus. Yes you can unlock the boot loader, yes you can root, flash etc etc.
1. Buy the phone from any carrier
2. Remove any bloat (its simple)
3. Spend an additional $9.99 to unlock Sim
4. Take two minutes to look at the nexus 6 forums, I highly encourage exploratory learning
Enjoy.
I purchased the phone for $250 US from AT&T (extended current contract 2 more years), received it 16 November. I'm on truly un-throttled data (Cingular wireless grandfathered). Rooted, unlocked, no bloat (to include logo) and I'm good to go.
Lastly do me a favor, do not believe the hype about "OMG it's a sprint/T-Mobile/att purchased phone, I'm screwed" because its not from google or moto. Spend 10 bucks, sim unlock and save yourself from all the preconceived notions you'll hear lots of people yap about.

Thanks. I've always jumped from one Nexus to another. But have never purchased or used one from one of the US based carriers. (I'm not gonna use it the US anyway) My only jitter was that it should be completely flashable .. especially because I don't want to be stuck with a dead phone half way around the world.
On the same note -- Sim unlocking -- Is that necessary? Since I won't be using a Tmobile / att / sprint sim at all. I'll be using a Vodafone IN sim that works in my country

If you purchase the phone from ATT you will have to Sim unlock in order to use the Sim from your country.

So, should I abandon all hope for an unlocked bootloader for my att s5?

I regrettably bought the att version of the s5. And sadly didn't realize how much att ruined it until it was too late. My fault though, I didn't do my research.
So should forget about being able to have complete freedom with this phone?

With increased security with every update and how long bootloaders have been locked, you shouldn't maintain any expectations if that is what you mean. You can always hope though. Perhaps sell your phone on swappa and get a Nexus to regain your freedom? The days of being a flashaholic on Sammy devices are passed. AT&T and Verizon has killed development with the lock downs. At least T-Mobile can use international ROMs.

I've given up hope. I thought I couldn't live without the Xposed framework (Amplify and Wanam specifically) but, to my surprise, the user experience, battery life, and functionality on this device is good enough for me not to mind.
I get a workplace discount on AT&T and I need data and voice in my locale and rural areas...so I'm not switching carriers anytime soon, if ever.

you can just do what many of us here do, buy an unlocked G900T (T-Mobile variant) and use it on AT&T. Works flawlessly and has unlocked bootloader!

I heard the processor for the International Version is best I think it stats with an E. Should I get that?
I would like to root.
Does it matter or should I just order one directly from Sprint?
Will this work with Sprint?

you said sprint, sprint is cmda... meaning, exynos WILL NOT WORK. no international phone, you must buy snapdragon. now you have two choices carrier locked, and carrier unlocked. both have a locked boot loader and are not currently capable of root. if you purchase the phone out right it does not really matter which version you get. if you buy sprint locked after 50 days on their network they will carrier unlock the phone. the only true difference is carrier bloatware/ software which I'm hearing can be flashed using odin

There are SOME radio differences but I agree it shouldn't matter.

Thank you, that is what I need to know. Now what about getting a S8 or S8 Plus instead? Are those rootable? I mean does it even matter any more? The only thing I really want root for is Youtube Ad Block, but what the crap, mine as well just pay 10 bucks a month and get Youtube Red and allow my phone to update it self all the time.

from what I hear it is possible to root the s8, but it limits your max battery charge to 80%? kinda a **** trade off if you ask me.
so I'm like you I thought I must have root, my last android was a Nexus with a completely unlocked boot loader and I flashed custom roms when I tired of my current rom. that was four years ago and I've been jailbroke iOS since. do you still need root?
most people will say no. if they say absolutely the main arguments I've heard are for xposed(which doesn't even work on android 7) and viper4android (or some similar name, a sound tweak I think) besides those two, removing bloatware, and hosts file ad blocking.
my personal experience: I will be giving up an unlocked boot loader by purchasing the note 8. this mean no custom roms. I haven't given up hope for a future possible root method, but I am willing to accept that it may never come or when it does we can only charge to 80% or something else ridiculous. I don't need root, I would like it, but I will compromise.

The issue is that the Snapdragons have locked bootloaders but you need a SD version to use the Sprint network. It doesn't matter if you buy a Note 8 or an S8, the issue with the locked bootloader is the same.
For me personally, I need root because a lot of the apps I have use root. If you only wanted to block ads on YouTube, it's probably unnecessary and far more hassle than it's worth.

Sorry, I can't provide any guidance in this area. I'm in Australia and don't have experience with the inclusions/exclusions on specific American networks such as Sprint. I do know they use CDMA technology, which the Exynos SoC doesn't support.
Hopefully, one of the other enlightened souls on this forum can help you with this question.

I am on Sprint and am currently utilizing what I posted above as working...I am still finding out other working options as well...ask me about an option and I'll tell you if it is working on the unlocked version.

The Sprint Version will cut out the download booster and hot spot unless your plan includes it but include calling plus features which include their version of the Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Calling for surfing over calls....but we already have that with Wi-Fi calling...Sprint also has Bloat software such as VVM but I install Google Voice for voicmail...it is up to you...at this point I have found no function lost.
Oops...I forgot to mention that they may update more frequently or sooner

That is extremely important. Do I have this right? If I buy the unlocked version. Can I surf the internet while on the phone with the unlocked version from Amazon or Samsung or do I need to buy the Spring Version?

When I called my wife on Wi-Fi Calling i was able to surf the web as well...I'll double check tomorrow when she is awake though

I have the unlocked version arriving soon and I will be using it with sprint. (With the free 1 year promo)
AFIK only the sprint and unlocked versions are whitelisted to work on sprint. Any other snapdragon models you will need to request a manual request to add your IMEI to the sprint database.
And I believe the Exynos models isn't compatible with CDMA at all, something with licensing or patent issues with Qualcomm.

Are you serious. I will be giving up call over data? WHY? Is this like that for Verizon and AT&T? Have they all lost call over data or do they just not want you to be able to do it?
Should I keep my Note 3 for that very reason?

Oh my goodness, looks like my note 3 has two antennas and the newer phones have only 1. that is why i can do both. Why would they make the service worse?

Any Development For Straight Talk Variant Of Moto G6?

Hello, i just got this phone (Moto G6) and it is straight talk branded. Does anyone know if there is any available TWRP, root, or anything like that possible for this model (XT1925DL)?

From what I can gather it is the same as a regular G6, but don't hold me to it. I believe there is root, but no TWRP, there are no Roms(although GSI's will work to some extent or another), and probably will never be any real development for this phone.

I'm gonna bump this because I'm thinking about one of these from Walmart. Any more thoughts/updatez on root?

I would just go to Best buy and buy a retail unlocked. I'm not sure the bootloader is unlockable on the DL. It'll work just fine on any of the straight talk networks.

I have the Total Wireless version of the DL, which I assume is the same as Straight Talk, since they're both Tracfone CDMA services. I can confirm that the bootloader cannot be unlocked on this model - they won't give you a code on the Motorola bootloader unlocking website. On the bright side, I paid only $108 after applying a 40% discount code from Groupon to the $179 that TW charges for the G6, and TW is offering a $35/mo 7.5 GB plan if you port a number. So far, pretty nice phone for the $ and TW service beats the hell out of the AT&T service I moved from, at least in my area. Also, mobile hotspot is enabled, contrary to some reports I had read online.

Thanks for the info. I got one from Walmart and of course it went on sale after I bought it. Rules of the game... anyway, I didn't even care about the carrier as I just wanna use it as a nice capable wi-fi mini-tablet, as it were, since 7 inch tabs now are junk. So I put it in airplane and turn wifi on.
Anyways, with all my apps loaded and using Adguard, it works fine with no lagging and most bloatware is disableable via settings so no complaints here.
