Anybody Grab One of These After a Pixel XL?

So I made an expensive mistake, thinking that I could live with a locked down device and grabbed a Pixel XL through VZW and I've reached a point where my inner flashaholic is screaming for his fix. I am considering other devices and am curious if there is anybody here with a 3T that had previously had one of the Pixels, and their personal opinions on how each device stacked up against each other.

I haven't got a Pixel, but I've used it extensively through work (I'm a web developer, so we used various devices for testing websites with).
The camera is much better on the Pixel, but otherwise the OP3T is just simply better. More RAM, same CPU, more storage (at least, cheaper) which is as-fast, same GPU. Overall better performance (as seen in benchmarks). And, it's unlockable and customisable. It's also brick proof (software brick, not house brick!). So is the PIxel, but your VZW is locked down as you know.

I just traded my pixel XL for a 3t a few hours ago. Time will tell. Will come back to update possibly. Camera is absolutely​ noticable.

Returned my Pixel for a 3T, too. IMO, the blazingly fast 3T is superior in every way except camera. All I want in a phone camera is for it to take good still shots. Couldn't care less for all the advanced crap. 3T's camera is good enough for me. A 1440p screen would be nice, but 1080p works. I also use an iPhone 7+, so am used to the screen size/pixel density.

It makes me wish the camera had the same tech as the flagships because i wouldn't upgrade my phone for anything. I have a feeling oneplus will start making flagships not flagship killers though because lets face it the 3t is like 90% there already. The should release a 5T and 5B (budget), T for people like me who want the best available but don't want to go to samsung, and the B for people who just love the drastically cheaper price and quality phone which is also me .

See it's funny as I was looking to go the other way. Get a Pixel as I tend to change my phone every six months or so. I loved having the pure Android phones with the latest OS.
Are the Pixels difficult to unlock and root? I assumed they'd be as easy as OP3T. I think sometimes I forget how decent the OP3T is! Ian already thinking of getting the Xiaomi mi6 plus until the OP4/5 is released.

The 1080 pentile display on the 3T kills me, I hate it. Apart from that and the poor camera it's better than the Pixel.

The display on the 3T is fine and pentile isn't an issue at all. Also 1080p is just fine and looks sharp. High res screens on phones look silly and are barely noticeable. They also consume more resources to run.

Honestly, it's a pain. TWRP is not reliable. There are a few versions but none can do backups or restore. Basically when something happens you need to plug it in and ADB and/or fastboot. Both SU and magisk (unofficial only) can also get aggravating.
OT while the 3T is fast and is great in many ways. I decided to list mine this week. The camera can get rough as I have a nearly full blurry album from the other night.
Thinking about waiting a month or 2 or diving straight to the Mate 9, still undecided.

My OP3T is now on EBay. I was gonna hop to Xiaomi Mi6, but there doesn't look like a plus version now - and I don't want 5.15", so maybe not. Perhaps the OP5?
I would like to try something else. Huawei seems kinda expensive for what it is.

I wouldn't hold my breath for OP5. My bet is that OP5 shipments will be a nightmare. Way worse than previous shipment issues of OnePlus devices. Leaks are saying that OP5 will come with Snapdragon 835. Samsung already reserved the first batches of 835 making even traditional OEMs to have hard times to get their hands on new SoC.

Eh who knows. 835 supply should be fine during the summer. You have so many flagships waiting. You have to keep in mind the demand could only be for so long.

I'll take it back - the Huawei phones for what you get is a lot more powerful than what is out there. The Huawei Mate 9 Pro is particularly good value stacked against the Pixel/Samsung S8 or iPhone 7 Plus.
However, bang for your buck the Honor 8 Pro/V9 seems to be very good value for money.

Is the OnePlus 3T still a great phone one year later?

Hello again! I've been looking at the OnePlus 3T for a while now, but I didn't want to jump the gun yet.
It was a steady $500 CAD here in Canada for a 64GB and I found a 128GB OnePlus 3T that comes with 2 cases,
for $480 CAD, now, the phone has been out for almost exactly one year now and it's only now $120 off, so this
leads me to my questions, should I go ahead and purchase it? Is it still a great choice, one year later?

As long as you don't need the fake bokeh effect that a dual camera setup gives, you won't regret buying this phone.

I've had mine since April and still love it. Even though that new Pixel XL 2 is tempting, I essentially will do the same thing on both phone and can't justify the money when my 3t is still running excellent

Yes it is. I bought mine in December and it is one of the best purchases that I have made.
To elaborate, I have been mostly stock except for magisk root, and never faced any issues with this device. I use it for work and play, and it never disappoints. I would not change this phone except maybe for the iPhone X (but a $1000+ phone? screw that)

I came in late to the OP3/3T game and got mine in June of this year and haven't looked back since. Sure I 'want' a Pixel 2 XL but damn that price... The 3T has been amazing to me. I've got mine unlocked, using FreedomOS CE with Magisk, AdAway, Substratum (Ozone & Swift Dark), Nova Launcher with Prime & Google Companion, Google Pixel Dialer/Contacts, Google Pixel 2 Live Wallpaper and a slew of other minor things here and there. OnePlus gives you serious freedom and the devs are already pushing hard on custom O ROMs. If you're here on XDA you most likely enjoy tinkering and this phone will let you go above and beyond simply because of the great folks in the various forums and communities let alone the ease to do so because of OnePlus keeping it open.
Side note: You can get the fake bokeh effect easily by using Google Camera with a Magisk Module to fix the crash bug. Neat stuff but I just use the included OnePlus Camera myself.

How much more is the 5? I love my 3t and couldn't be happier with it.

No it's not, it's a fake bokeh effect. It's not all that great, but it's all we have if using Google Camera.

You're probably going to get a lot of us fan-boy-ing about it. Do you have any questions about it in particular? As far as I'm concerned, it's the best phone I've ever had & may betray my normal cycle of purchasing phones (every 2-2.5 years) and just hold onto it.
You're super free with the software. People say it's "unbrickable" (though I just had the scariest experience of my entire custom-flashing-life of the last 7ish years, but it was resolved either way). No removable battery & expandable storage sucks dongers but that's the trend regardless. The specs are far beyond what's needed for a telephone if you ask me. The price for what you get in hardware + software freedom is craziness (in a good way).
The ONLY THING is if you really need amazing camera HARDWARE, then you should be looking at Samsung, Apple, or the new Pixels. That being said, there are many camera mods enabling you to use (on custom ROMs) the OnePlus camera, the Pixel camera with HDR+, the Snapdragon camera, and if you aren't already aware, learning how to use Manual mode can do wonders...

I am just looking for a speedier phone than I have right now, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which I am sure is a definite night and day difference in performance, the OnePlus 3T caught my eye back in February, and the price seemed quite good for such a stunning phone. I do have a few questions, how do you rate the fingerprint sensor? Is it fast or super fast, compared to maybe a iPhone 6S or 7, but that might be stretching it. How does the camera do at night? In a poorly lit room? Thanks for the reply!

Sorry for the late reply! The OnePlus 5 is going for $720 Canadian Dollars for the 64GB, whilst the used OnePlus 3T 128GB is going for $480 Canadian Dollars.

I'm the wrong dude for both of those questions probably. I only messed with fingerprint a littttttle bit on my s5. Compared to that, OP3T is blazing fast.

I am using stock OOS and the fingerprint is blazing fast.
Regarding the night camera, installing the Google modded apk is the way to go. It offers fantastic night shots.

Absolutely! I love it like a child. It's my baby.
I have often said to OnePlus that their customer's service should favorably compare to the phones they produce. Their customers service, in a word, is awful. It is somewhat heartening that it is getting better.
They produce a wonderful product. Their support leaves a little more time, I hope. I have never come across a situation quite like this. The quality of their products far exceeds their support. I think. in time that situation will change. They will improve or fail and that would be a shame.
XDA could learn a lesson from what I said about OnePlus. Their product is truth. Their support also leaves something to be considered.

Portrait mode (with dual camera) is fake bokeh also. Just not as fake. It's true, the Google lens blur often results in "fuzzy" edges on the subject, or obviously fake/cheesy looking Photo-chopped effect.

Yeah, it's as good as we can get with the single-lens and OP / OP3T setup. I don't use it even though it's neat for up-close 'macro' like shots, but the fakeness of it does show through most of the time. I'm saving now to get another DSLR and do love my OP3T for quick on-the-go snaps. It is good for that, the picture quality is leaps above most phones out there, and for it's price point, not really anything to compare to it.

Not literally, no. But "portrait mode" is just an Apple baloney marketing name for "fake bokeh effect". Now every phone manufacturer feels like they need dual camera and "portrait mode" (which I'm sure Apple is suing them for using that name). Even dual camera is just software trickery (in conjunction with dual camera) to fake a bokeh effect that will never be possible with the focal length of a smartphone camera.
Obviously, you won't get the exact same effect as a phone that has dual camera (OP5, iPhone plus, etc.).

Back to the original question: I would say YES it's still a great phone.
I was unimpressed with the OP5, with its mostly incremental improvements, and the "jelly effect". We've actually seen a number of folks on this forum, looking to get a new phone, and opting for the 3T instead of the 5.
Of course there are other, impressive options (Pixel 2, Galaxy S8) with their own pros and cons. But of course they are quite expensive, and don't measure up to the shear value of the 3T; with its combination of build quality, value, and dev community here on XDA.
I don't find myself yearning for the "latest and greatest" phone yet. Maybe next year. The 3T is holding it's own quite well, and still a very solid and capable device.

Pixel 4 XL vs One Plus 8 Pro: Better OS Features/Experience

I'm town between the 2. I don't care about camera and 5G isn't a huge deal to me. I'm looking for the most capable OS. Its my understanding that timing on updates are going to be about the same with both companies/phones. Any insight appreciated. Thanks.

I'd go for the 8 Pro
Bigger and brighter screen
Has fingerprint unlock if you don't like face unlock
Updates are close to Google (every two months I believe) (but one month behind on security patches)
OS feels more like Stock+
Most likely has better battery life but this one is subjective
I'm wanting to switch as well but not the best time for me to be splurging on mobile phones - given the situation around the world. The phone is about $1500 before tax here in Canada :silly:
All in all, If you're financially able, I'd definitely go for the 8 Pro, seems like a better phone all around!

Go with the pixel, the os is better. My OnePlus 6 has aged horribly.

Definitely go with the pixel longer life in all aspects from my experience..

I have both and i think the Pixel is a bit better and feels better in hand.

Question McLaren 7t Pro to 10 Pro: Worth it?

I got my Mclaren 7t Pro almost 3 years ago. Battery life isn't what it used to be, but otherwise it's been a really good workhorse for me.
Been eyeing the new round of phones and nothing seems to really jump out at me. I looked at the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but that thing is huge. All of the demo Pixel 6 Pro's I tried had various problems and the 10t just... doesn't seem much of an upgrade on paper to my 7t Pro.
with the 10t, I'd be losing 4gb of RAM and getting a better camera and better screen. Processing seems roughly the same, although a new Snapdragon might be quicker than my older.
Any thoughts? is it worth upgrading or wait and push off for the 12gb RAM model?

I came from the oneplus 8 pro (which also had 12gb ram). The oneplus 10 pro isnt an upgrade, its the same phone.
Feels like it anyways.. I'd have stayed with the oneplus 8 pro except my screen was completely destroyed and so was the camera from a far drop.

It depends what you want from a phone I guess.
Coming from the 8 pro, there's a lot of comparable parts, for example the screen, the audio, even the cameras to some degree.
But there are some huge improvements.
The cameras: for example in videos, the stabilisation is phenomenal, and zooming it's more akin to a TV camera, the fluidity and smoothness is definitely something new, it's a joy to use. Tbh as are the cameras, no macro though which sucks but that's life.
Charging: this is something to behold, you can literally see the percentage increase, half an hour and you're at 100%, it's insanely fast.
SOC: performance is a massive bump over the 8 pro so will be even bigger over the 7 series, PlayStation 2 games run at a full 60fps which is staggering really.
Battery: 5000Mah my first couple of charges 11 hours and 10 hours SOT, amazing tbh.
Software: very mixed bag android 12, there are things to like but for me I need a custom ROM which are being worked on as we speak.
Looks:. Great looking, non fingerprint shiny surface, looks brilliant, nice and heavy too. Feels high quality.
Overall comparing to my last phone. The 8 pro, you need to understand that the 8 pro was a stellar phone. It stood out amongst the other 8 series devices. Was the best of the bunch but honestly besides the lack of a macro camera, I can safely say every department has improved.
With that in mind would it be an upgrade over the McLaren 7? Yes I think it would be. Performance, battery, looks and features.
Is it going to reinvent the wheel? No but Moore's law is dead on phones, you aren't getting twice as much any more, but to say it's not a worthy upgrade if you're due for one and have any other OnePlus phone would be untrue, even people with the 9 or 9 pro would be missing features that are only present on the 10 pro.
That's my opinion anyway.

I wish I could agree, but I'm just speaking from an average consumer. You are definitely a Power user
This phone seems just as smooth. The camera is currently worse (Just because I was running a gcam port. But that will definitely be fixed once I have time to find a good gcam port!
I guess I should rephrase what I had said. If you aren't looking to game and you're just an average user, you'll notice no difference. They lowered the ram for US model(for whatever reason, I was kind kind of upset about that too)
One DOWNFALL is definitely the lack of MEMC. That 120hz upscaling was HUGE for me. Especially when it was the only reason I would have considered staying on OOS.

I'm sure there will be more versions soon, bit of a slow burner compared to the 8 series, but it'll come good I reckon.
No ROM as yet. OnePlus hasn't released correct driver's or something so they're working in the device tree.
I don't pretend to understand it all but it's in the post I reckon... For me Evo X was the best ROM on the 8 and probably for all the devices I've had so if it's anything like that I'm sure we'll be happy

thanks for the conversation everyone. I decided to take the plunge, ordered it through Best buy for the $100 giftcard.
I was tempted to pick up a "global" 12gb version on amazon for a little more cash. but, decided to stick with what's "actually" available to me in the US.
Any recommended cases or accessories?

You're a little late to get the buds for free, the promotion ended on the 12th April... But having used them now for a little while I can wholeheartedly recommend them, I honestly can't fault them, the noise cancellation is actually quite spooky, I'm not an audiophile so I may be just witnessing this for the first time myself but it's quite amazing IMHO.
The 8GB version I have myself, your battery will thank you for this and if you do end up rooting and get a custom ROM on there you can use a pixel type ROM which will enable unlimited back up of photos so the 128GB storage won't be an issue.
Cases I've not tried but you've got one in the box that I'm using myself, nice and slim and the phone comes with a screen protector already fitted which works as expected. Plus you've got victus gorilla glass on there.
I'd I wanted strength for drops then a ringke would do the job and still look cool or a UAG if they release one. For aesthetics I'd say the sandstone would look good.

Bro wait, you got a case in the box for your oneplus 10 pro US varient?? I was WHOLY expecting one, but mine didn't come with it! I ordered brand new on amazon and received it release day. I ended up buying one anyway, but still lol

Bit crap you didn't get one mate..I hear the charger over there is slower too. Is that to do with that voltage output of your grid? Think yours is 110v and ours is 240v or vice versa, no idea...just trying to put reason to it.
Or is this a Chinese company being mean to the yanks?

No i had no idea that was a thing either! However, I dont think I would have qualified anyway. I purchased on the 12th and took delivery on the release date (14 apr).
That case actually looks better than the one I had to buy. All other oneplus's I've bought had cases, I think they're just mad at us Americans LOL The slower charging is whatever. It would be cool to have it but the tests I've seen only show a couple minute difference for both phones to be fully charged.

Question Upgrade, yes no?

I have been using the Google Pixel 6 for more than a year and am basically satisfied with it. However, I think that an upgrade is necessary. Would the Pixel 7(a) be recommendable here? The only thing that has bothered me about Pixel 6 is dark scenes in videos. Black pixels are lit up in a funny way and yet you can't see much in the videos. Otherwise, I am also open to other brands with good price-performance ratio.
I am grateful for any advice and opinion!

In general the improvements from year to year aren't that much; not much bang for the buck unless you get a really good trade-in deal.
I'm still using my Note 10+ and in many ways it's superior to the newest Samsung's and not much slower in actual normal usage. Nitpicking over a couple pixels for a cam upgrade isn't worth all that trouble. Pro cam shooters rarely upgrade their cam every year or two...
Bottom line; depends how deep your pockets are.
If you don't upgrade expect to replace the battery soon, routine maintenance, no big deal.

In the Google Telegram channel I got recommended that I wait until October for the Pixel 8. Let's see what that brings, except for the unnecessary built-in fever thermometer.

I replaced my P6 with a P7 after it was accidentally damaged beyond repair. I can barely tell the differance. The phones seem to drop in price quite a bit about 3 or 4 months after their release, so if you can wait til the end of January most of the early bugs will have been worked out and the price will have dropped by at least $100.

You benefit by waiting not only in a reduced price but by seeing if any unsolvable hardware bugs are present. I would give it 6 months. Use independent reviews here, on utube and Reddit to better guage the actual performance and any issues that crop up with the device.
Look at the mess some of the S23U owners are having with the banana shaped optical blurring with their main cam. It's not just Samsung, both Android hardware and firmware are more shake & bake then ever. When people are in a big bad hurry... mistakes happen. Sit back, observe then pick the device that will best fullfill your mission if you have that luxury. A good flagship should last you many years.

Just upgraded to the Pixel 7 from the 4xl. Only real improvements I see is less bezel, updates install faster, and slightly better camera. May return the 7 and stick with the 4xl a bit longer.

Do the Google phone vs phone vid search. A 2019 flagship can hold up well to the newer phones. Replace battery as needed and keep rollin.

I've never used the 4xl but I like its lens spec. With newer Pixels I'd rather not resort to digital zoom for avoiding distortion. 7 Pro answers that but only if prices drop enough.

I had a Pixel 6 since they were announced and was very happy with it except for the fingerprint reader. I work with wood a lot and it seems to screw up my fingerprint mightily. I basically abandoned the fingerprint reader and just used a PIN. When the Pixel 7 arrived, I traded-in my Pixel 6 and got a Pixel 7. I am very happy with face unlock and that I don't have to deal with the fingerprint reader anymore. I can't say anything about the 7A, but the Pixel 7 screen is very much like the Pixel 6. In fact, I think of my Pixel 7 as a "Pixel 6, refined." There might not be enough difference in the screen to make it worth it. Same with the cameras. Again, this relates only to the Pixel 7, not the Pixel 7A.

I went from the 6 to 7. It was a lateral but very needed upgrade. Much more stable.

I plan to get a 7 real soon as I found a nice deal on it. Leomgrass color
