Question S21 Ultra 512GB US has pinkish hue off axis when displaying white - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

The video shows what I am seeing on my S21 Ultra 512GB Snapdragon 888 that just came. When you tilt the screen with something white displayed, there is a magenta/pinkish hue if you aren't exactly looking at the display straight on.
Anyone else experiencing this, if so is yours the US version or Exynos?
Must admit, I'm pretty disappointed as my S20 Ultra screen has no color shift at all at any angle. I couldn't capture the exact time the color shift occurs, so images don't do it's annoying nature justice.
Overall, the phone is a nice phone, but this really annoys me so I'm debating on returning it.
Starts around 13 minutes in the video below:

Pink Tint Issue on S21U
Looks the S21 has it's first big issue. Pink hues when looking at it even from a slight angle. issue discussed at 12:59
forum.xda-developers.com

Yes. I try two S21u and both of them have this problem. Exynos version.

Same issue here. Qualcomm version.

I have the same issue!

I've seen 4 ones of 888 with the pink now. I tend to think it's not just one or 2 bad devices. This did help though.

I preordered mine and got it this weekend. 512GB Exynos vairant and can confirm that the pink tint indeed exists. I have it too. I am coming from a note 9 and looking at both side by side, the note 9 does not have the pink tint. Also I noticed that my tab S6 has the pink tint too. Its only visible on white backgrounds and when viewing the phone off axis.

I have this on my UK version too. Adjusting the colour filters pretty much removes it though.

Tried the colour filter trick didn't work for me. The pink tint still exists. I reckon its the hardware rather than the software. I remember this being an issue when the iphone x launched too. Apple was replacing handsets for those affected. Will ask Samsung for a replacement tomorrow and report back if the new unit has it too.

I try 3 s21 ultra exynos . All of them have pink tint of axis. just one more or less than other. Very disappointed.

...same for 888. Seen several

I don't have it at all on my Exynos version.

Actually on second thoughts i think you guys should try the colour filter trick. Maybe everyone needs different settings as everyone sees things differently. Here is what I did. Kept the white balance in the middle between cool and warm. In advanced settings i reduced the red slider all the way to 0 and the blue one to half way the green one is full and i do not see the pink tint anymore or even if it is there it is not as visible and annoying you really have to look for it. If this doesn't work for you then keep messing with the colour settings it might work. Use a white background to test what works.

Funnily, I've had to alter my display to take the green out but I definitely don't see pink, perhaps only at low brightness. As I said on another thread ,the display quality on the Ultra is way ahead of my OnePlus 8pro.

Not happening on my vzw branded 512gb

Not for me. Maybe you got a bad unit...

LCD less contrast and color appearing yellowish

Hi, PAL,
Since I brought my HTC Diamond HK WWE version on June, and compare with my several friends of HK_Traditional Chinese Version 1.37.842.....
and discovered that mine having much higher contrast as all of my friend's one less contrast and color appearing yellowish....
I'm sure it is the difference of LCD/hardware, as I've flash several ROMs included the said version...
So, does HTC change the spec or supplier of LCD display???
Do anyone has idea of this phenomena ??
THX
Kelvin
hi all,
My Diamond's LCD is also less contrast and the white background appears yellowish. I found out that this batch shipment has this problem and I have checked more than 10 new sets.
Hopefully HTC is looking into this problem. Really disappointed!!
rgds
Frank
Same here. I have 2 Diamonds, bought a month apart. The new one (arrived today) has lighter contrast and the white screens have a yellow tint. Very disappointing.
Mine also same bought 1 week ago after compare with few friends, Is that the batch problem or HTC going to cut cost using lower grade LCD for future set. Very disappointing (for those who's bought 1 week ago u might think your LCD is prefect, go and compare with 1st batch quality u will go )
So, does anyone contact HTC to get their explanation??
Personally, I'll complaint such disappointed deviation and give them pressure.
Wish you get htc positive response..
hmm, might be that it is just the 'calibration' of the light sensor. When you disable "automatic adjust backlight" and use the slider to set your backlight, all looks fine I believe
Disabling automatic backlight doesn't help improving contrast/saturation...
Would be awesome if someone could come up with a hack that made it possible to adjust contrast on the Diamond... I've played with Resco Photo Viewer and by increasing contrast on photos all looks extremely good.
It's completely insane that they let us adjust backlight strenght but not contrast!!! A contrast settings slider would help tremendously for us with the low contrast / washed out screens!
we knows that htc provided lcd from 2 factories...one that's more white and another that they said more bilanced in color..but if you compare 1 to 1 seems to be better the first...this is not only for the diamond!!!i had 2 htc touch that had the same problem!!!so..be happy with your diamond..white or yellow that is..
p.s i a have yellow..
i am buyers 16.7.2008 is white my friend buyers 15.10.2008 he i yellow

I know that I'm not the only one reporting this, but I'm the first one to provide pictures and video that prove that the problem is not so small as some might think.
It seems HTC started to use lower quality LCD screens with some (maybe all) of the newer Diamond units. These screens have a yellowish tint, and seem to have lower contrast.
Here is the proof (it's a comparison with my old Kaiser):
(both devices are at maximum backlight, and the Diamond's "auto backlight" option is off)
Pictures:
http://img45.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=10590_Picture_003_122_764lo.jpg
http://img24.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=10597_Picture_005_122_672lo.jpg
The difference seen in the picture is a bit exaggarated in comparison to what I see in real life (even though I did not touch the picture with any editing software, this is right from the camera), so I've included a video too, which more accurately portray the differences:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cVGORLm-Qc
(in real life the difference is just a bit more pronounced than in this video)
It is important to notice that without a direct comparison to a unit like the Kaiser (or the first batch of Diamonds), it might be hard to know that your Diamond has this phenomena, because even with this phenomena the screen look decent.
My fear is that both types of LCD screens are going to sell with new Diamond units from now on, making those who bought the yellowish screen unable to ever sell the unit for a decent amount of money (when they feel like upgrading).
We need a formal answer from HTC regarding this issue.

Me too, I was sending my TP to repair after using it for 2 months, due some really dissapointed problem like the LCD screen bottom corner peeling off and sliding keyboard starting to become not align with the body.
So they said they're going to replace the LCD 1st and return to me while waiting for the new stock of sliding keyboard. So I just got back my TP from SIS (HTC Malaysian Distributor) today, and found that the screen became VERY yellowish and terrible in different angle-viewing, besides, the new LCD screen viewing angle is terrible, some more fading off and cloudy, like covered with a greyish+yellowish cloud like that!
I did complain to the girl @ SIS, but she said she can't do anything! "this is the NEW BATCH of original screen from HTC!"
But after 'google' thru the net, I've found a lot of other country Touch Pro/Diamond has this issue. And get replaced a new one for them by HTC. Then why Malaysian can't?! This is unfair!!!!!
LET'S SHOUT THIS OUT LOUD TILL THEY REPLACE IT FOR US!!! Check this out, more others has this dissapointing & terrible quality problem for this expensive device!!!

Which one is normal? The whiter one is from Sam's Club and the yellow one from Google. Google has always given the nexus devices a yellowish hue so I'm not sure..
My gnex is more yellow than both lol
Well I have to say, it sucks that you have a yellowy screen from google, but this is just the range of screens you will find in manufacturing. Would you have found it yellowy had you not had something to compare it to? Probably but it all comes from the same place... Asus. Google did not tune screens from Play store to be more yellow than that brick and mortar stores. I don't like that there are inferior screens out there, or defects in general. In a perfect world there would be NO defective units, but we don't live in a perfect world. Even the retina equipped iPad has yellow screens for some, etc. If you don't like it (I wouldn't!) please get an exchange! I would not accept that knowing that there are nice white screens out there. In fact, I went through 7 nexus S's and 2 galaxy nexus phones to get one with a screen that I could accept.
It's just a warmer white. Some will get a cooler white which is blueish. Just how displays end up. I know my rezound has a warmer white compared to my friends but I wouldn't call it a defect
Sent from my Rezound
I'm going crazy, each nexus 7 I've got have a defect:
Blinking screen, bleeding edge, colour defect :S
Check this, Franko Kernel r13 left, right stock 2min uptime. Both are C80 8gb from google.
I hate this, Too many replacements, what to do, replace again?
the one on the left is correct, the one on the right has washed out colors
It's yellow tint, screen works perfect, if yo compare both tablets you realized how bad the screen is :S
All my previous 2 replacement units have the yellow tint. My original one has normal white color.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Another one affected by yellow tint, in my case in a C80.
This is my second replace, first one was by a very minimal screen lift in the left side.
I'm surprised by the argument about "this is not a defect". We are talking about screens. In a TV/monitor it's unthinkable to ignore these artefacts, why we should do it in a touchscreen device??
Each one have a tolerance, but the fact is the fact. The screen works bad, maybe is related to calibration or maybe with a bad ensamble, but no one guarantee you that it doesn't going to worst.
If you want to have a device that is not optimal "out of the box", you accept a unnecesary risk.
both C80.
Latest 8gb 3 of them with yellow tint.
And here is me thinking the 'warmer' colours were normal on a N7.
Just realized how yellowish all the whites are on mine... and I thought everything is fine with this one.
It's amazing how fast and good can be a cheap 7inch tablet. But when so many have problems
Yellowish whites on IPS
Blueish whites on SAMOLED.

Can you be more specific? Brightness level, which direction your tilting it, whole screen/part of screen etc
All brightness level. The whole screen had a yellow hue if look at it straightly. But the yellow tint will disappear if the phone is tiled to any direction by 10 degrees.

Mine does this too- it's a "feature" of the last gen OLED displays that Samsung have fixed with the new gen (which Moto obviously couldn't source for this phone). My Nex did this too. Screen adjuster + manual brightness over 50% fixes it for me

interesting.. you mind sharing you setting for the screen adjuster? It's quite obvious and I wonder how all those online reviews don't seem to mention it. A blob of yellow/orange-ness moving across the screen as you tilt the phone

Edit:
There's also the chance of getting a bad battery or an underperforming processor.

I don't think so, but anything can happen. And not just with Motorola, defects happen everywhere. I guess my point was that since everything else with my phone is perfect except for a yellow tint depending on viewing angle, I'm not going to roll the dice and replace it unless I know the yellow screen is a fluke.

Yea, I would be very happy if my screen is the same as the one I saw in ATT store, where there''s still some yellow tint, but it's lighter and much harder to notice, even in full brightness. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I recently got my 128gb, and returning the 64gb tomorrow, did some comparison on the screen, 128 on the left side.

While this may sound crazy! This is normal (that there not exactly the same). While you might be able to keep comparing different S6 until you find a pair that "matches", or have the same screen brightness any random pick won't be the same...there are many factors and as simple as different build dates etc...
On the S6 now and have had every galaxy since the first one and several HTC's before. I always by in pairs (keep the wife upgraded) and have noticed this every single time and not just with the Samsung's. Just how it is.

This is 'normal'. I am on my 3rd S6 because the first two had that ugly pink tint to it. My 3rd phone not only has no pink tint, but also a really crisp white display. Compared to the previous phones, they were much more yellow.

I'm on my 3rd as well, no pink but it does have some green at the bottom sadly. It's not too noticeable, and I don't think I want to go through the hassle of getting a 4th replacement. All the AMOLED displays for the S6 are going to have slightly different factory calibration on all profiles. So no two S6 displays are going to be the exact same.

Exactly. Basic knowledge
AMOLED does not have a backlight, it lights up each individual pixel which is why you can have inky blacks, because it simply turns off those pixels, unlike LED screens that use a black image with a light behind it giving off a grayish background.

light sensor is different in the camera (more sensitive or uneven)
I noticed a change in my screen after installing a tmobile update. Originally there was a completely black screen on the lockscreen, but after the update it almost appeared that there was a sort of gradient almost representing a light bleed.

Question Do you have rainbow effects on your Pixel 7 screen?

A user on Reddit posted that they had rainbow effects on their P7 screen when the screen was held at an angle. I did a little searching, and found that this was fairly common on the P6 screens as well. Apparently Google found that this was a normal effect and in tolerance with their manufacturing specifications.

Do you see any rainbow effects on your P7 screens?
I noticed it yesterday when the phone was about three feet away from me on the table. Maybe at a 45 degree angle it rainbows, but holding it, or being close to it, shows no signs of it. It doesn't bother me since the way I "normally" hold and use it do not produce the effect. Only if it's at a big enough angle. Even so, it is very minor. When I did see it I had to move my head back and forth to really notice it. Otherwise the screen just looks a little off color on parts of the screen. No biggie.

The phenomenon of lenses causing light to split into its component parts is called "diffraction". Any transparent medium where light travels at a different speed from the medium it came from will exhibit this phenomenon.
Mine has a slight blueish and pink tint on white at angles. I'm not sure what to do. It's not bad, I don't really notice it. I would be happy to exchange it if I knew there were some displays that didn't have this issue.
Mine has that too. But geezes, you have to be looking at the phone at an extreme angle to notice it.
Thanks for posting your experiences guys. I tried to edit the poll to reflect a vote where the issue is present but doesn't cause a problem. You should be able to change your vote. Hopefully I didn't screw things up there, and if I did, my apologies.
I notice it but the bigger issue is the green tint, just looks awful compared to my calibrated monitors.
My old S8 had a bit of a reddish tint but the colors looked better overall if a bit oversaturated. Might try to root and use Sa2ration or something.
My Pixel 6 Pro did. The Pixel 7 Pro does not.
Ok I can weigh in now. I see the exact same effect on this phone as my other oled phones. When you look at the screen at more extreme angles, you get a bluish tint to white screens. Really not an issue for me, and I don't consider it a rainbow effect (though I think it is the same thing).
On my pixel 7 I get the rainbow effect on white backgrounds when looking directly at the screen not at an angle. The screen on my Samsung a53 is much better then the screen on my pixel 7
people cant enjoy the phone for what it is...just buy the damn thing and enjoy it, its not like its noticeable if you looking at it from a normal view
I think it also depends on the kind of person you are. At work I asked 10 people and only one colleague noticed a slight shift. My iPhone XS Max back in the days also had this issue. I traded it in and got a new one, which had the same issue. I then used the phone for another 2 years and aside from the first week it didn't bothered me anymore.
They all have it. Some more than others. If you're looking for it, it's there. If you just use your phone it will disappear and just leave an excellent phone to enjoy.

i agree
Maybe a bit, but only at extreme angles. Any normal angle I'd look at my phone I can't see anything.

My Pixel 6 Pro did. The Pixel 7 Pro does not.

My p6 pro doesn't have it, even at angles and full brightness, weird
Mine has bluegreenish and redish wave-tints on angles displaying white backgrounds. But I got enough other problems in life. So ... idc
I have had three Pixel 7 (non Pro) - all of them had the same rainbow effect.
And this is quite annoying because you can not really keep 100% the same angle by reading or looking at the display while holding the smartphone in the hand. You always move a bit - and then the blue or red waves are rolling over your screen.
For me the display is one of the most important components - the display you are looking at all the time you are using the device.
But that's just my point of view...
At first I had no clue what people were talking about, but after turning the brightness to 100% and tilting the phone in an angle I'll never use (since its impossible to look at the screen since its so tilted) - then yes.
I do have the rainbow-effect on my Pixel 7.
However, its a non-issue.
I had to tilt it even more than the person in the video from OP,
but even that angle seems like a non-issue tbh.
Might as well be my protective glass for all I know.
I'll never see it unless I tilt to an unusable angle.

Mine has a slight blueish and pink tint on white at angles. I'm not sure what to do. It's not bad, I don't really notice it. I would be happy to exchange it if I knew there were some displays that didn't have this issue.

Upgrade to the Pixel 7 Pro since it doesn't have this issue since they didn't cheap out on the display. Seems they didn't change the screen from the Pixel 6 since XDA actually mentioned this in the review they did on the screen: "Rigid OLEDs are an older construction that is now usually only used in budget phones...Also, on rigid stacks, the refraction of the light transmitted through the glass layers causes unwanted rainbow viewing angles that you simply don't see on flexible OLEDs."
I personally find it annoying but only because I know about it now and only really noticeable if you looking at the phone at extreme angle like sitting on your desk or other flat surface. My fancy expensive larger S7+ Samsung tablet also has same issue so obviously doesn't bother enough people for them to spend more to upgrade the display to get rid of it. Also, pretty anoying that my much older LG v35 phone doesn't have this problem either since it was flexible OLED, but as you can see flexible OLED easier to break around edges, another reason I went with Pixel 7 instead of the Pixel 7 Pro.
Pixel 7 Pro: it does not have any rainbow issues.
Here's a pic I took of my S7+, iphone SE, LG V35 and Pixel 7 and can u guess which one is the Pixel? Easy to spot since only other one than the large S7 with the rainbow colors. Also, as you can see from the pic most noticeable on a clear white background so if you work or look at a lot of that like say documents at angle might be annoying enough but not to upgrade to the Pixel 7 Pro just to get rid of it. Even if you did you would still get bluish color like on the LG V35 OLED display at bottom because that's just how OLED works
Why do I see a color shift when I look at the display from an angle?
