New Chromecast with Google TV ads full support of HDR and Dolby Vision single track dual layer (FEL/MEL) - Google Chromecast

Hi everybody, surprisingly last february update of Chromecast with Google TV has brought full compatibility of this device to every Dolby Vision single track dual layer profiles, before it can only decode Profile 5 and some Profile 4 files (not everyone).
It also plays every HDR format:
HDR
HDR10
HDR10+
Dolby Vision single track dual/single layer (FEL/MEL)
HLG
I have tested with Makemkv and other test files and the Chromecast plays every of them fine and my Panasonic HZ1000 shows the Dolby Vision logo.
Playing with latest Plex and Emby beta for Android TV these are the results:
Dolby Vision profile P4 - OK
Dolby Vision profile P5 - OK, but some minor files don't show DV logo
Dolby Vision profile P7 MEL - OK
Dolby Vision profile P7 FEL - OK , but it can't fast forward or rewind, it can only play and pause.
Dolby Vision profile P8 over HDR - OK
Dolby Vision profile P8 over HLG (iPhone 12) - OK
It's mandatory that the reproduction goes direct without any transcoding on subtitles or audio (AC3 transcoding when audio format is not supported in Emby or optical AC3 conection in Plesk, must be disabled).
I've different issues in Emby an Plesk beta. The more stable playback is done in Plesk but the wide variety of formats supported is done in Emby.
It's a huge improvement, I'm sure in a near future both media servers/players will play everything without the actual minor issues:
Files with FEL layer have issues jumping on time or a concrete chapter, depends of the player and the file.
In Emby when it plays from the begining a file it began playing in DV mode but after a while (several minutes) it stutters a bit and change to HDR.
FEL Dolby Vision playback is a difficult task, I've run the tests proposed by MakeMKV to ensure if the device is capable of and this Chromecast seems to pass it.
Even the powerfull nVidia Shield TV 2019 can't play FEL files and have issues with the color management, and doesn't support HLG or HDR10+.
This little device is surprisingly amazing...

I have a New Chromecast with Google TV, and I test a fel dolby vision mkv video with plex, why don't fallback hdr10?
oh, yes, it can plya P7 FEL, but I don't know if it get the fel layer. could you please post the test file?

Just got a new CCgTV because it seemed to be the only streaming player to play proper FEL. I'm testing but on Plex most titles play as HDR10 for me. Seems to be videos with the HDR10 base layer.
You can check by turning off the "force Dolby Vision" in the CCgTV settings to off. Else everything will "seem" to play back as Dolby Vision even if it's not actually.
The real way to test for full FEL + profile 7 support is to try to playback these files as described here. https://www.avsforum.com/threads/du...onse-other-random-stuff.3188469/post-60582530
For me, on my CCgTV, the mkv file won't even play back
All to say: I think FEL playback on CCgTV is broken.

Hi, It continues working like a charm with DV FEL/MEL titles.
As I said: It's mandatory that the reproduction goes direct without any transcoding on subtitles or audio (AC3 transcoding when audio format is not supported in Emby or optical AC3 conection in Plesk, must be disabled).
You must ensure that everything goes in direct playback or DV processing didn't shows.

How Nook's video capability? 720 RMVB? MP4?

I am wondering how good the Nook's video capability. It seems there is no powerful display adaper driver for it?
How about 720p video support?
Thanks
720p is probably out of the nook's hardware capabilities.
Also I believe CM7 and HC are currently without hardware acceleration. Best bet is probably Froyo, but haven't tried it.
Moboplay works well for 720p rmvb. i just used real file tested
what rom you on?
i only attempted streaming with gmote from my desktop over wifi, and regular xvid avi's were pretty choppy. (running cm7)

Your NOOkcolor supports the following video file formats: 3gp, 3g2, mp4, m4v; MPEG-4 Simple Profile up to 854x480; H.263 up to 352x288; H.264 Baseline profile up to 854x480
Your NOOKcolor will not support the following video file formats: Flash (Flv/swf); Mov/qt; AVI; MKV; Xvid/divx; WMV / VC-1; H.264 Main and High profile; and videos with a resolution higher than 854x480
So far for me, 854x480 h.264 has provided the best results, mpeg4 has more compression artifacts. There's a profile posted on here somewhere for handbrake to convert to the proper format. VLC convert and stream also transcodes to h.264 if you want to stream from a media server or PC without having to convert the files.
For it to work properly with hardware acceleration, I think only android 2.1 (stock/rooted) and 2.2 have full support.

Uh if there's audio sync issues . . . how exactly is it playing videos "perfectly" ???
As has been described already, MP4 videos encoded using H.264 baseline at a resolution at or below 854x480 work well in the stock player. Beyond that, 3rd party video players aren't performing well enough for me to accept as "perfect".
I've tried Rockplayer, Vital Player and VPlayer and none of them play raw AVI files (xvid) that I watch from EZTV to my satisfaction. The only thing that works for me is to re-encode them using Handbrake and the Handbrake preset that's available in this forum with a constant quality setting of 22.

Don't misunderstand me, I've done my own testing. The point I'm making is if people read such statements and then try to watch videos they'll be disappointed in the fact that there are indeed sync issues.
I'd never describe the playback of a video file with audio sync issues as "perfect". IMO the only way playback would qualify as perfect is if there are no dropped frames and no audio sync issues. That's not the case in any of the solutions i've read on these forums when it comes to AVI or MKV playback.

Okay, just to clarify concerning 720p.
Nook Color has a single-core 800mhz processor.
I have found that a single-core 1.4ghz processor is very marginal for 720p - most don't work, even with the most CPU-efficient software decoding ("core").
Generally 1.6-1.8ghz is the minimum required.
So, the only remaining question is whether the graphics chipset will actually support 720p hardware acceleration through a change in the software:
PowerVR's SGX series features pixel, vertex, and geometry shader hardware, supporting OpenGL 2.0 and DirectX 10.1 Shader Model 4.1.
The SGX GPU core is included in several popular systems-on-chips (SoC) used in many portable devices. Apple uses the A4 (manufactured by Samsung) in their iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV. Texas Instruments' OMAP 3 and 4 series SoC's are used in the Nokia N900, Sony Ericsson Vivaz, Motorola Droid/Milestone, Archos 70, and others. Samsung produces the Hummingbird SoC and use it in their Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, Samsung Wave S8500 and Samsung Wave II S8530 devices.
Intel uses the SGX 535 as its GMA 500 and GMA 600 integrated graphics for their Atom platform.

Are there manual settings that I can program into Baddaboom? I use that for video encoding as it supports CUDA on my graphics card reducing encode times up to 70% at times.
FWIW "Saving Private Ryan" as both an avi and mp4 have played just fine on my rooted NC (Rockplayer).

In handbrake, the iPod/iPhone profiles produce video files which work fine on the NC (up to 854x480). So if Baddaboom has profiles for those devices, give those a shot. If you want try to tweak the settings manually, the magic configuration in handbrake is:
Set max B-frames to zero
Turn off CABAC entropy coding
Turn off 8x8 transform
Turn off weighted P-frames
In my experience vitalplayer neon plays movies better that rock player.

THANK YOU for that! I've been using rockplayer and having a couple different problems which put me trying different encoding methods last night (different sizes/audio settings, etc, etc.)
Rockplayer is simply inferior to the V7 "Neon" version of MoboPlayer. Very excited about this software find! Thanks!
On the 720p resolution thing:
The Nook's display is 1024x600. 720p video is 1280x720. Playing 720p format videos is overkill. You can convert it down to a smaller size (working on the "best" settings right now in my "Things I Learned" thread.)
Apparently the hardware accelleration only works on up to 854X480 MAX. Anything less than this is scaled up/down to that before run through a hardware scaling up to fullscreen (1024x600).
I find for software playing (for now) 854 width is doable, but 720 width (480p) is nearly the same quality. I'm still playing with the settings, and with the discovery of MoboPlayer, I'm redoing research. I'll be updating my thread with the "best" settings the software player can handle (max 1ghz cpu overclock). Since I'm using a max of 858x480, it should play with hardware accel flawlessly once that is working on CM7 (already works on 2.1/2.2?).
Love this platform.

It plays MKV out of the box, but audio support may be an issues. Either way MX Player plays MKV fine with support for most audio formats.
MKV is just a container so the real question would be it's audio and video codec.
Xperia Z/ZL or any high end android phones only support H.263, H.264, DivX, Xvid, 3GPP, 3GP2 I think that should be all the video codec it support. But as the other poster said... Just download MX Video player I use that over any stock video player 99% of the time.
MKV's work, but there are limitations. You can't select what audio track to play, it just uses whatever default track there is. Secondly there is a somewhat limited codec support. Many higher quality MKV's you find in less legal places of the interwebs use AC3 (Dolby) or DTS (or their HD variants) audio codecs which aren't supported. As far as I know it'll only play files with audio in MP3 or AAC, and I'm not sure about multi-channel AAC. Subtitles won't work either. And then some MKV files just randomly refuse to play, but I haven't identified what causes that problem.
There are two solutions:
Either just play everything with MX Player, with the HW or HW+ decoders you still have full hardware support and the benefits of Bravia Engine combined with full support for pretty much all audio codecs, multiple audio tracks and multiple subtitle tracks.
The other solution is to use software to remove unused audio tracks from your MKV's and if necessary recode your preferred audio track to stereo AAC. By far the best software to do that is Avidemux. It allows you to delete and recode streams without affecting other streams. Basically that means you can remove audio tracks you don't need and recode the one you want without having to recode the video, which is extremely fast and with recent CPU's only limited by the disk read/write speed.

First off, have you ever had any video work for you? I use HandBrake without changing any default settings. I had a few MP4's that played but had issues so I just ran them through again as is which corrected the issues.
These settings were designed for the roku, but I'm pretty sure they would apply to chromecast as well, even if just as a starting point (for example, you can probably increase the bitrate):
Preset: Regular - High Profile
Container: MP4 File - make sure Large file size is checked.
Picture Tab
Size
DVD
Anamorphic: Use Strict or Loose - Anamorphic will attempt to create a widescreen effect from a DVD format.
Cropping: Automatic
Others
Anamorphic: None
Check Keep Aspect Ratio
Cropping: Custom - make sure all settings are 0.
Video Filters Tab
Filters
Detelecine: Off
Decomb: Default - this will automatically deinterlace only if needed.
Deinterlace: Off
Denoise: Off
Deblock: Off
Grayscale Encoding: Leave unchecked
Video Tab
Video
Video Codec: H.264 (x264)
Framerate (FPS): Same as source. If your source is greater than 30 and you experience playback problems such as rebuffers, change the FPS to 29.97.
Quality - You can use Constant Quality, or Average Bitrate. Experiment to see which is best for you.
Constant Quality: RF 17 to 21 should work well. Smaller RF settings will result in smaller files, but less quality. Larger RF settings will result in larger files, but better quality.
or
Avg Bitrate (kbps): Usually 1500 to 2500. For fast action videos such as sports shows, use a larger number. If your video shows jerkyness on fast action scenes, use a larger number.
Audio Tab
Audio Tracks
If your source has a digital audio track, use two audio tracks - one digital passthru, and one AAC analog. This will give you high quality audio on devices that support digital tracks, and will give you analog audio on devices that don't support digital tracks.
Source
1st track: (AC3)(5.1 ch)
2nd track: (aac)(2.0 ch)
Audio Codec
1st track: AC3 Passthru
2nd track: AAC (faac)
Mixdown
1st track: None
2nd track: Dolby Prologic II or Stereo
Samplerate
1st track: Auto
2nd track: Auto
Bitrate
1st track: Auto
2nd track: 128 or 160
DRC
1st track: Auto
2nd track: (your choice)
(From the HandBrake Guide)
Dynamic Range Compression
The dynamic range of an audio track is the difference between the softest and loudest sounds.
Dynamic range compression reduces the gap between those extremes.
•1.0-2.5 are good values to use.
•0, the default, turns it off completely.
•1.0 uses the compression hints embedded in the AC3 track.
•Values greater than 1.0 compress the range further by boosting the volume of soft sound samples while leaving loud samples as they are. This squeezes down the range between the softest and loudest parts, but should make the softer ones easier to hear in noisy listening environments.
Note, this is not the same as a gain or volume boost control.
Compatibility
Dynamic range compression only works when the source audio is AC3 and you are encoding to another format, like AAC. It has no affect on AC3 pass-through or on DTS or MPEG-2 audio.
Subtitles Tab
Roku does not currently support embedded subtitles, but you can add them for future use, or if you're going to use the encoded video on something else that does support them.
Chapters Tab
Like subtitles, Roku doesn't currently support chapters, but you can include them for future use. Check the Create chapter markers box if you want to include chapters.
Advanced Tab
Use the defaults.

Playing 2D/3D video files with AC3 audio

Has anyone been able to figure out how to play videos with AC3 audio inside Gear VR? When I play such (2D or 3D) videos, the video plays fine but there is no sound and I get a pop-up that the audio codec is not supported. In non-Gear VR mode, the stock video player can play such files with video only but the BS Player app can play such files just fine with both video and audio.
Since most of my videos have AC3 audio, it is a real pain if I have to convert the audio every time before copying such video files from the PC to Note 4 SD card.
Thanks,

I have read that ac3 codec is no longer included in factory rom because licensing fees. I think the only way would be to reencode movies to files with sound natively supported by Note4

Until Oculus or another developer includes more audio codecs, Gear VR supports only AAC and mp3 audio for now.
With Virtual Dub you can easily and fast convert your movies tho, when you set video to passthrough and only the audio to convert. Takes only a few minutes to convert a movie then.
Sounds easy enough but would you so kindly post slightly more details to doig this in virtual dub? (Not a bioshock reference)

HDR10 video files playback

Is there any way to play HDR10 video files with proper HDR colors? HDR works fine in YouTube, but neither the stock player nor VLC or Kodi manage to play the video file properly; washed-out greyish colors are the result. The file is a standard 4k HEVC HDR10 24fps video, and plays fine besides missing HDR. Since the phone itself supports HDR10, I really wonder why it won't work. Is it a software-side artificial limitation to Netflix and YouTube (where HDR works just fine), or is there any technical reason behind this? And would there be any custom ROMs with proper HDR playback support?

KMplayer played it in good colours, i found that something relating to SW/HW enforcing or acceleration has to do with it..
then finally i tried to disable all enhancements in VLC and tried.. then video became choppy..
it couldn't play the video at all.. same as my Laptop ( i3,8th gen - default HDgraphics) plays 4k video in choppy manner
then i thought: they are not only playing video, but converting the video while playing it.. because i can observe loss in detailing of picture ( my laptop with 1080p screen has more detailing than, phone 1080p screen)
