I've read many many many threads and web articles about this topic but I can't seem to find one that is really close to today's date (September 3, 2011) I'm sure everyone has had enough of these threads already but I really could use the advice and help but I don't have any friends with the knowledge to call on.
Here is my problem... I bought a Nook Color about a week ago without doing nearly as much research as I should have (and normally do). I haven't rooted it yet but I'm still happy with my NC, which I've just been using to read and browse the web now and then. Today as I was looking at best buy's website and I came across the Samsung Galaxy Tab for only $30 more than what I paid for the NC... so that leaves me with the options of keeping my NC and rooting it or returning it and getting the Galaxy Tab.
I've never had a tablet before and this is the first real spend on myself in a really long time, so I want to make sure I make the right decision and don't regret it once it's too late. I'm looking for like an all around good e-reader/tablet but not looking to spend a whole lot of money on it, and at the time the NC looked like I wouldn't even have a doubt in my mind, until today. The cameras and gps and other random things the Galaxy Tab can do aren't really my main concerns but it sure factors into the whole picture. I'm thinking I'm ready to take that step into either starting the rooting today or getting the tab and just start playing around with it.
I guess what I'm looking for in an answer would be should I keep my NC and start going about the rooting process or should I just return it and get the tab and basically be good to go right out of the box?
That being said, I also saw that the next NC could be coming out really soon. But that doesn't really matter too much to me as I'm looking for of a more "right now" than a "near future" haha.

Edits - Really, any help/opinions/suggestions are greatly appreciated. And I guess another of my concerns and reasons for making this new thread was to maybe get insight about this topic in the "now" with the recent release of the 1.3 update and next nook color coming out "soon."
It all comes down to what you plan to do with it, knowing that the more you learn about it, and play with it, that could change.
We have 3 Nook Colors and love them. The price, the ease of use, the great screen, are all benefits of the NC. I am not happy with the speaker or the sound from the NC, so headphones are a must. We don't have any Galaxy Tabs so I can't really tell you about them.
We use the NCs primarily as eReaders, with a few apps/games for the kids. They are (or were until BN pushed the 1.3 update) rooted so that takes a little bit of set up and maintenance time. We don't need the the cameras or the gps so we really don't miss that. We love the original NC eReader app (not the market one) so for us, I think that puts the NC over the Galaxy Tab.
I am still in search of a good music/video player, and overall, while the NC does what we need, my wife still has iPad envy so we will probably be getting an iPad 2 in the near future.

Somehow, I doubt the Galaxy Tab would measure up now. It seems like it would be a bit bulkier, maybe heavier... and it doesn't seem like it bring much to the party... the hardware may be a little better though (ram/cpu). The NC doesn't have any outputs though to hook up to a TV or anything like that... For some reason I want to say that the Galaxy Tab does have some sort of hdmi out, I could be mistaken though.
But, it's a matter of opinion I guess.

Try MoboPlayer I use it for AVI files that I stream over the network for my daughter. It works great, and has a library poster layout feel to it. Though, it won't load your files unless you enable the "software decoding" for them. You can set it in the options though, to always use it.

I just have to correct some misstatements here. I have a rooted CM7 Nook color and a stock Galaxy Tab. The NC is great, and very functional as a low cost, no frills, easily customized tablet with a nice screen.But where it lacks the Tab undeniably shines. The Tab is lighter, smaller, and has a wonderful Gorilla glass screen. The cameras and video capabilities are sharp and convenient. And with HDMI output, I'm able to share the contents of my Tab on a larger screen easily. And the speakers are much much so much better than those on the NC it is not even funny.
For only $30 more, the bang-for-the-buck in me outshouts the geek in me and says the Galaxy Tab wins out.

Like I said... ionly have the nook color. I wasn't trying to spread misinformation... just giving my speculative opinion. Like I said.. the HDMI would be worth it. And the NC speaker suck without nook tools boosting sac.

Im with Cymoze. I own em both and the Gorilla Glass and the "feel" of the Galaxy Tab make it my go to device. The added hardware and the drop in price make it even more appealing.
I will say this. Flashing the tab with better then stock firmware is a bit more troublesome although not impossible. The Nook Color cant be fubar`d and that appeals to alot of folks.
Not to mention making phonecalls on the tab just friggin ROCKS.
If your able to follow instructions buy the tab.
For those who have used them side-by-side, what do you think about the reading experience on the Samsung? Is it radically different or worse than the NC (I'm just talking screens here, really--I mostly read in Aldiko, sometimes Kindle)? I'm hoping and assuming the Samsung has better audio...am I right?
I have a line on a GSM Galaxy Tab 7" at a decent price, but I couldn't afford to keep both devices. Reading is a high priority, and I'm just a little concerned that if that experience suffers much, the Samsung won't feel like an upgrade.

I dont hqve a problem reading on the tab. But i cant say i do it for extended periods of time.
Id do spend a lot of time on it vs. The nook color. I just dont like the feel of the nook and that bezel drives me crazy.
I don't own a Galaxy Tab (however I do own a Samsung Captivate). Just based on Samsung slowness to put out firmware updates, I think B&N wins in the customer support category. However I do wish the NC had HDMI (or usb) video out. Also the NC struggles with HD video (I'm running CM7 nightly 160 and haven't had luck with any video player with HD...also struggles with youtube HD). I think if you have the patience you can tweak the NC to perform just as fast as the galaxy.
I think for $30 I might go Tab. However, check Ebay or Buy.com....NC refurbs can be had for $160-$169 (I got one I swear it looks brand new...I think B&N is just dumping them to get ready for the NC2).
I bought a NC back in March I believe and I love it. Yes, the speaker sucks, the screen, while works okay, is a little unresponsive, but other than that I prefer it over the tab 7 WIFI! I stress this because I got the Galaxy tab 7 WIFI version for FREE and after using it only twice I got rid of it. If you're going to get the tab, the WiFi version is a NO GO! It lacks in every way compared to it's counterpart. It's slower, less ram, no HDMI out possibilities, bluetooth is locked down, and there is virtually no community support (you cannot use the GSM or cmda roms). Touchwiz SUCKS on any device and even more so on the bigger screen of the Tab.
If you don't care about the GPS, camera, etc. then the NOOK should be your choice. You can do so much more with it and, to me, it feels like a budget tablet should feel. The galaxy tab, to me, just felt like a childs toy.
I read on my nook color ALL the time using Aldiko and I love it. I didn't like the way the Tab 7 felt in my hands, it did feel bigger and more bulky. It was thicker by a lot, although not quite as tall due to the n button area on the nook.
Call it a bad experience, but I'd still rather have a nook than a galaxy tab 7 any day. I love samsung as a brand, but their tablets have not impressed me at all (although I do like my rooted gummycharged Droid Charge).
Another general warning about Samsung android devices....they lock down their bluetooth so that you can't use a lot of the things that you could on other devices like the PS3/wii controller, HID devices, etc. Some say they did it on purpose, others say it is just the way it happened. I hear HID is unlocked with the gsm/cdma galaxy tab 7 but I cannot confirm this.
Well, THAT happened 10 hours ago........
The launch for the S5 came and my enjoyment faded pretty quickly. You can see from my track record in my signature that I've been a pretty loyal customer of Samsung for quite some time now, and this may be the first Galaxy launch that I won't have a pre-order in the system. Other than stepping away from the Galaxy line to pick up the Atrix 4G, the first mass produced phone with a fingerprint scanner, coincidentally, I've enjoyed only Samsung phones for the last 4 years. The "premium version" of the S5 was supposed to be 5th in line, what with the 20MP camera, metal body, G-Note 3 battery size, 5.25" screen - you've seen it all and read it all, it didn't show up today. Now unless Samsung is about to pull the biggest stunt they've ever pulled, the Unpacked5 event is in the books and we're not getting anything more than what we got today.
Is there any positive that came out of this event? Sure! USB 3.0 is a big thing for me as I have lots of 3.0 gear and want that from my next phone, it's dust and water resistant, cool fingerprint scanner providing it works flawlessly unlike the one on the iThing, updated TouchWiz which (try not to judge) I actually like a little bit, the wearables, the bigger focus on health, better processor, camera, and connectivity, but then comes the let downs, especially for S4 owners. Same 1080p screen at almost the same size, same 2GB of memory, almost the exact same front camera, soon to be the same OS (again, I like TW so I'm sticking it out on 4.3 until the TW 4.4.2 comes out), same plastic body that I don't necessarily mind, but would have appreciated a little change other than just putting dimples in the back cover, and probably worst of all to me, they're offering it in a 16GB format again after what they just did to us who pre-ordered and / or early adopted the S4, sticking us with next to nothing for internal space because they believe everyone has kids and needs to have likely a ton of space dedicated to a kid mode with pre-installed games and crap. I'm single and not looking for that anytime soon!!! It's like they claimed to listen to their customers but only those who are married, have children, want a "modern glam look," whatever the hell that means, and work out enough to bring their phone with them while exercising!
Damn that's a lot of negatives so far. So what can Samsung do between now and launch to earn my money short of releasing their ultra premium version that was supposed to exist but doesn't, and calling this one the S5 Neo? Let's take a look, and please, feel free to help me add to this list!

I also know it isn't up to Samsung on this, the carriers are the ones being douchebags about it, but Samsung put their foot down with them previously by stopping them from dictating all the individual revisions when they launched the SIII, making them all the same shape and size, so why can't they force their hand on this in the sake of making even the smallest group of their customers happy - those that truly use the phone for what it was meant for!
Negate the 16GB version - this is obvious, why the hell is this even a thing anymore with Samsung.... just get rid of it if you're not going to slim down this ridiculously large ROM of yours! Ship with the 32GB at minimum and announce the 64GB as well. iThings do this as a standard now, and while iSheep love to keep their music on their device and we have this little thing called external storage and another little thing called Google Music, we don't have to, but seriously, cut the crap and ditch the 16GB model!
Allow us to remove certain features we just aren't going to use, EVER - as I stated already, I don't have kids and don't need a Kids Mode. If you aren't going to let us root the thing AND aren't going to launch it with more than 16GB, let me get rid of the damn Kids Mode. Or the health features. Or anything else I decide useless or unnecessary. When looking at pics of the camera settings on the S5, I'm able to download more features as I see fit - why not make some of this crap downloadable and not don't ship it with the device? Why not make an Aroma-like installer when you first boot it and say "hey, would you like all of this crap or just some of it?" like any PC software does when it installs something - Typical or Custom installation. Sounds like I'm asking for a lot here, but really, I'm asking to not be forced a lot that I really won't use. And before you comment that if I don't need it, don't buy it in the first place, there are so many things I love about my S4 and TouchWiz that I'm not planning to part with in order to have "a phone," my N7 has a purpose and it isn't so I can keep the screen on when I need it just by looking at it. It does great for playing movies on a trip but not for letting me change the channel of my big TV when I want to watch a blockbuster movie....
Ship with at least the S805 processor for crying out loud - if you're not going to blow us away with something new and powerful, at least ship it with the very latest processor this time from Qualcomm. The 800 has been out for months, the 801 is obviously an incremental update over the 800, and the 805 isn't that much better, but at least give us the goods instead of just going along with the same processor found in the N5 and G-Note 3. I don't think we've heard which one for sure will be included, but from what I've read, so far they say it's the 800 or the 801. EDIT - it's the 801, confirmed by Qualcomm....
Include wireless charging in the box - I shouldn't have to say this, wireless charging is now old technology, the SIII had the capability but not the attention or love needed for Samsung to just release the official cover, the S4 cover took 3 months to post online for sale, and with all the competition shipping their phones with it included, why aren't we able to get it without paying $50+ for it? I used a 50% off coupon to get it for $25, but that's $25 more than I should have spent after being let down on a promise that the SIII was supposed to be able to do it on a phone with nearly useless internal storage....
Sell us some legit accessories this time, namely a car dock - I'm always impressed when people recognize me from my review on the only working car dock for the S4 since Samsung decided to screw around with the whole thing and make my Infuse dock useless. It worked on the Skyrocket and SIII, and would have fit the S4 except it wasn't possible to get the thing working properly by charging and outputting dock audio on it, so it's collecting dust in a box right now. Sure, I get it, you want to sell me something new instead of letting me use the same one for my last phone, and that's different than what you are doing (or didn't do?) with the wireless charging cover, but in this situation, you're not even selling me one! The S4 sold tens of millions of devices, did you stop and think that maybe ONE of them would be going in a car and being used for playing music or navigating that owner safely from one place to another?

That's all I got for now, I'm sure we can come up with more and while I highly doubt Samsung is listening to people like me, one of their 200M customers (I'd like to think I counted 4 times for buying 4 iterations of the Galaxy line), there's always a chance someone is listening. I bet they'll listen when they're trying to figure out why the sales figures are going to be monumentally lower this go-round, that's for sure!!!
A note to fanboys of all kinds, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, iThing, etc - let's keep it clean here, please. You haven't heard me bash anyone else here, even Samsung really, so please don't get this thread locked on me. I'm sure you have witty comments like Nokia and HTC have today, with their "Samesung," "Buyers Remose," and even the most original ones like telling me that you're disappointed or this phone is ugly.... As if we haven't seen those comments before. Be original if Samsung isn't, post something relevant to the discussion if you're going to post at all! I don't waste my time on writing this stuff to insult others, so don't do it to insult me. If you were never considering buying it, you don't have any reason to comment on here because nothing you're going to say will come across as helpful to myself or others. If you were considering buying it or even, dare I say switching from another brand, or actually will be buying this phone - let's discuss intelligently your reasons why!

In Slovenia in past month we have major electric blackdown becouse of mother nature - no internet no nothing.. but FM radio did work.. on my S2 I could still listen what is happening, but on newer device.. bljah.. must have tool which cost them 1 euro cent per device..

I agree with all you say. Particularly about wireless charging, and accessories which get launched with fanfare and then never see the light of day. The other thing they could do is to put one of the new gear items in the box too. That would be a good sweetener. Lol.

How do you know it doesn't ?
Two points here:
1. I see you are American, and that in the US the carriers **** in their customers' heads when it comes to freedom. The international S4 has an unlocked bootloader, it has been like that since the original S.
2. The Snapdragon 805 isn't available yet, sadly.
And why isn't 2GB of RAM enough? I have 300+ apps here, 9 accounts syncing and available RAM never goes below 700MB.
I'm going to point something out to everyone here that wants Samsung to get rid of security features such as locked bootloaders or Knox.
We are the minority. Do you Expect Samsung to tailor to us and risk the average consumer's information and safety so people can run an AOSP build or a custom kernel?

While I'm not excusing the US carriers for doing this, but why do you think they try to steer people away from rooting and unlocking the bootloader? People mess up, brick their phone, and then try to do a warranty claim on them. They're protecting their profits, and as a business you cannot blame them for that. Anyone else here would do the same thing to retain profits. And what do you mean "use the phone for what it was meant for?" The phone is meant to be a mobile multimedia cellular device, which in fact still does on the software it ships with no problem.

You can disable features you don't need. But just because you decide a feature you think is useless or unnecessary, does not translate to everyone else will think this too. I like the kids mode feature, I've got kids and nephews that get my phone somehow all the time.(Anyone with kids can attest to that too! ) I'm sure people will love this feature.

This is Qualcomm's area right here, ARM cpus are following the development of x86 cpus. Meaning it's reached a point now where development for ARM cores is slowing down, tremendously. We probably won't see any groundbreaking ARM cpu's come out for maybe at least a year or so now, took x86 cpus years to show good and cost effective performance gains.

I do agree with this, but also at the same time there are 100s of other companies making accessories that Samsung does not make.
Samsung is not going to tailor the phone just for one person or a small group, they're doing it for what they believe are the best choices for their devices. Looking at their track record of the Galaxy line up, I'd say they've got it down pretty good.
Why do u need a 2k screen on a 5" device? It eats battery life, it bogs down cpu and gpu performance for something that your eyes can't notice. I cant even see a pixel on my s4.

When kitkat was being written all the engineers had to use a smart phone with only 512 mb of RAM.
This will be moot tho with TouchWiz which is the most bloated god awful software on Android. 2gb IS enough yet the s4 still suffered from lag.
With the newer processors not being available yet Samsung should have focused on design. They put zero effort into that. This will be their first flop in the galaxy line. And by flop I mean by their standards. It will still sell millions.

When kitkat was being written all the engineers had to use a smart phone with only 512 mb of RAM.
This will be moot tho with TouchWiz which is the most bloated god awful software on Android. 2gb IS enough yet the s4 still suffered from lag.
With the newer processors not being available yet Samsung should have focused on design. They put zero effort into that. This will be their first flop in the galaxy line. And by flop I mean by their standards. It will still sell millions.

I have minimal lag here, but even Nexus can lag, it's not just TW or Sense.

this is so true. people just want a better spec sheet not realizing going above 1080p will actually lower benchmarks particularly with the s800 and 801 being the only SoC available now. To get something you probably wont even notice you will be sacrificing just about everything else performance wise.

Come on It was a pretty common bug on the s4. I have a Samsung tab note 10.1 and it lags considerably.
I've had numerous HTC phones over the years and sense has been toned down quite a bit. sense 3.0 was a system draining nightmare.
I really don't think you can compare a straight android ROM to A samsung rom and say with a straight face this makes no difference on performance or lag.
Just compare the size of a nexus 7 rom to any s4 rom.

Sure, the Note 10.1 is slow, but the problem isn't how light or heavy the ROM is, the lag happens because the Java-based Android Runtime isn't a optimized as iOS, for example.

It's actually dalvik at runtime. Dalvik virtual machine and kitkat is optimized quite well.
When you add a huge amount of code on top of that of course it will change the performance.

Actually that's a matter of opinion. My nexus 7 2013 and HTC one run as well as any iOS device I've played with. And they're of course other factors such iOS locked down system, boring home screen, no widgets, tiny screen etc.

Hey everyone (particularly those I previously interacted with in the - now much less active - Note 3 forum )
My fist post in this forum signifies... pretty much a complete 180 wrt my interest in the Note 4, altering it from "ehh, no thanks" to "I wonder if the Tmo store down the street has any in stock?"
First, my current Note 3: I freaking love it, easily my #1 fav out of the many phones I've owned. It's running Tweaked 3.9, leanKernel 3.11.3 and themed with @cbucz24's B&W Tweaked theme and a sick themed stock Samsung keyboard that he made. Run's like a dream (Antutu benchmarks always in the mid 40k's with an all time high of about 47.5K), Nova Prime, any otherwise heavily customized software-wise (most significant example: I've basically totally altered the stock S pen function via GMD S-pen / no auto Air Command, but launch-able via GMD and significant progress towards my goal of doing literally anything (access obscure settings / direct dial, etc.) just by scribbling a path on the screen. Also, froze flashbar service, replaced with sidebar launchers of Flppr - access pre-configured widgets, divided into categories, from ANY screen via swipe gestures (awesome in general, but particularly useful for "remotes" such as Smart Remote, Yatse, Ultimate Remote...), OmniSnitch (grabbed from the ROM flashed on my "week or so NEW" Note 10.1 2014, T-mo lte variant (p607t, which is actually just a carrier branded P605 - international lte variant, thus completely compatible with p605 ROMs :good, and PIE. Last example (maybe most significant) example, replaced Pen Window, which is rather slow, clunky, and functionally limited AND split window with the far superior XHalo module. Really the only "native" function that I use is handwriting recognition, which IMO works amazingly well). Also, I'm pretty good storage-wise, with the 32GB internal, a 64GB external (must have root app: FolderMount!) AND a few of those tiny USB / USB OTG drives - two of them being USB 3 / 64 GB (but the first Corsair one I got was "misplaced" (read: very likely lost forever) - replaced it with the equivalent Patriot drive which has the fastest transfer speeds I've EVER seen on a flash drive, but via PC USB 3 and phone micro usb 2! Oh, last thing, tons of accessories, most of which incompatible with the Note 4 (ex. cases... so many cases! and a micro USB 3 4 port hub).
So while, having the 'old' JUMP program and not yet using it, it makes more "sense" to trade my Note 3 for a 4, then do the same when this period of "transitional" phone releases passes, and the 64-bit "phone of my dreams" (yes, to confirm, phone ownership CAN affect sleep ) becomes available. However, given my exceptional "fondness" for my N3 & it's extensively customized tweaks, I am somewhat concerned about ditching it for its (currently, at least) less customizable successor.
Keeping my N3 AND getting an N4 really is not an option - I don't really have the cash to buy it straight up, and wouldn't be particularly compelled to if I did. However, having the 'old' JUMP, which I haven't yet used, I feel like, logically, I should go for upgrade 1 of 2 / year, and swap the N3 for a 4, which would be sort of a "transitional" device, until something that I NEED to have released.
SO Note 4 owners (JUMPers... first and last time I'll ever be using that adjective ), where any of you in a similar situation, but decided to go for it anyways? Are you happy to have done so? Any regrets?
Last (any peripheral) question: is anyone aware of the current availability of the N4? Is it typically available in stores yet (particularly in Chicago - the store near me is in Lincoln Park on Clark, if I have any neighbors around here )? Or is the best (fastest) way to JUMP via ordering online (if so, would it be a pre-order and if so, how long of a delay should be expected?) I do know a really cool / helpful guy at the T-mo store (who I talked EXTENSIVELY about root etc., explicitly making sure the new tablet wasn't locked down before buying it, and even straight up asking him if he thought that it would be cool to flash alternative firmware on my new deposit-less AC1900 if I flashed it back to stock before returning it, to which he surprisingly responded "yeah, I'm pretty sure that's fine"!) so he could possibly help me out if availability is still an issue (he also ordered a LTE booster, sent to my house, since I told him I wanted both but was told I could only have one or the other shipped. Paid the deposit for that one, but just got tracking info: delivery date = tomorrow )
So I can / plan to roll by the store to check it out, but just wondering if anyone has bought / ordered one recently and has any info re: current availability.

For me, the Note 4 is everything I've ever wanted in a phone (minus dual front facing speakers, but oh well)
I LOVED my Note 3. LOVED it. It was hands down the best device I've ever owned. Until now. I didn't use my JUMP (even though I have JUMP 1.0) kept the Note 3 so I could give it to my friend who would never be able to afford a beastly phone like that.
The Note 4 is the best phone money can buy right now (IMHO). No regrets, and I got it on release day. I baby it and it already has a couple of minor scratches on the aluminum bezel but I could care less. I never dropped it, ever, and I'm ultra careful with my phones (the Note 3 is still flawless, I mean literally looks brand new). So keep that in mind, you will get scratches on the bezel, but honestly even with that, still THE best phone in the world.
That tweaked 3.9 is a GREAT rom, but the note4 is an all around better device. Battery life, camera focus speed, processor speed (once tweaked a little), and the s-pen does function better.
And that fast charger makes anything else obsolete. Charging to 75-90% in 1hr is just crazy.
Screen is pretty nice too :wink:
I was pretty bummed about the rear speaker, and the non wolfson dac, but I guess only a few media people even care about sound quality lol.
If it's a stretch money wise, just skip this iteration, it's improved but not mind blowing

Just called the store, and the guy made it pretty clear that online order was the way to go (specifically, they had one white one at 6PM Thurs., and he said it'd likely be gone within 10 mins!) Additionally, with the online JUMP, I have 30 days to give my N3 a :crying: proper goodbye :laugh: )

Ah yes, the speaker; meant to address that. Placement / quality of a device's speaker(s) is probably the lowest priority criteria for device selection. By that I mean, if I'm doing anything on the phone where I care about sound quality (media, gaming (occasionally, but not usually), pretty much anything aside from ring / notification tones) I'm going to be connecting either headphones, APTX BT speaker, or even my 7.1 AVR. Any of those is going to produce better sound than even the best built in speakers on any mobile device, for which I would do the same. The lack of the Wolfson DAC is a drag or rather a "wtf sammy".
Situation seems to be that N4 is unquestionably "better" overall than the N3, and I basically have the choice of walking around with one or the other in my pocket, or burning 1/2 JUMP upgrades. Now that development for this phone has picked up, it seems to me that grabbing an N4 vs. holding onto my N3 would be an "emotional rather than logical" decision.
When you get your phone, you will love it. I switched from an AT&T S3 to this T-Mobile N4. A tad pricey, but oooh so worth it. I've wanted a Note phone for years and I finally have one. I'm tempted to root and tweak but worried about tripping Knox and any unforseen warranty hassles.
Anyway, glad you love your N3. Hope the N4 is everything you want it to be.

The UI feels a bit clunkier And the battery life isnt nearly as good for me as a heavy user i could get almost a full day and a half, on the note 4 i might get barely a day same use.
If i couldve taken the note 3 software multi window UI and put it in the note 4 body it would be the perfect phone.

I have to agree. Turned my note 3 on last night to play with it and it's smooth. Still on stock rooted and animation is smoother with less lag.
Battery on my note 4 i would say lasts 15% less. I've only disconnected my phone for 5 hours with 2:15 screen time and I'm already at 55%. I'm losing about an hour total screen time compared to my note 3.

Yes, Note 4 is worth the JUMP....
I loved my Note 3, but I love my Note 4 more.
There are only two things that I miss about my Note 3.
Temperature sensor
Humidity sensor
If none of these matter to you, the Note 4 is a no brainer. Even if those things mattered to you (like it matters to me ) the Note 4 is still a no brainer.
Those are great AnTuTu benchmakrs for the Note 3, but the SD800 in the N3 is no comparison to the N4 SD805. If you look in my sig, I've hit 50K+ on stock kernel running FireKatv2.

I am located in Vietnam. We seem to get dumped with a lot of phones that are returned by US customers. Currently there a lot of second hand S6 Active's on the market, selling for the equivalent of $350 USD. Phones looks in perfect condition. Question(s) I have is, what are the common reasons why these phones were returned by the customers? How do I identify these problems? Any comments on wifi issues? (having some problems with my LG with this), and lastly, what storage is available (32gb) after the system software?

Hi, I am from Pakistan and I purchased an S6 Active 2 months ago. I purchaed it at almost the same price you mentioned. The phone was in top notch condition, I purchased the blue camo version.
As to answer your questions,
1. There are multiple reasons the phones are returned by the customers, like lack of expendable storage, only 32 GB storage out of the box, a lot of which is used by the OS and apps, people find it unattractive compared to the regular S6 and Edge, phone is a bit bulky, some people may have bought it just to see the differences from regular S6 and Edge, people may have gotten bored of it, and more importantly, tech savvy people may have found that it has no working ROOT yet.
2. Wi Fi on my device seems to be working quite fine, although there is a weird signal fluctuation with the cellular network (I am on Telenor 3G).
3. As for the storage, out of 32 GB, almost 7 GB is used by the system and another 1 GB by the pre-installed apps, so you get approximately or a little more than 24 GB out of the box.

Thanks for you comments. My main concern was storage, 20 odd GB is good enough for me.

In my opinion is the best phone so far besides S7 and S7 Edge and S6 Active has vey close specs compared to them. I guess people are dumping them because of the appearance (not the most attractive phone on the market) but everyone has different tastes, I love the S6 Active. And of course the lack of ROOT seems to be a drawback.
Prior to the 5.1.1 upgrade my S6 Active had a strange speaker issue where sound would be distorted occasionally. After the upgrade the issue is scarce. The hardware buttons I'm not a fan of and one of them (back) is sticky without any feedback. The battery is great (up to 24 hours), although when bloated down with apps I was getting 8-10 hours.

Just bought one, totally new appeareance, 390 euro with shipping. The batt it's not at his full capabilities... i supose it needs a few more full charges...

I have the Tab S6 and just got my Tab S8 Ultra today. The Tab S6 was my favorite device ever (and I've had a lot of them). So thin, fast, great speakers and screen. Ultimately, I am just too accustomed to the higher refresh rate on all of my other devices and could notice the 60hz choppiness on the S6, so it was time for an upgrade. The screen on the S8 is absolutely stunning! I also LOVE the ability to miracast from my PC to the S8 and use it as a wireless second display for my laptop (called second screen), especially since the 16x10 aspect ratio matches my XPS 17. It will still take time to tell, but initially I am very impressed. I suppose the decision to switch will depend on your usage. If you're good with the screen size and refresh rate of the S6 and don't need any of the new features on the S8 than I would say just stick with your S6, it's still a fantastic device. If you plan on using the second screen feature or any of the other new stuff on the S8, well then it's something to consider.
There was a gap of about a year for me between these devices. But I loved my Tab S6. Now the Tab S8 Ultra ... a different league again. It is better in all respects (when you already decided to prefer the big screen). The first thing I notet though: finally a good fingerprint reader. With the S6 I was constantly annoyed, with the S8 it works like a charme.
I also bougt the keyboard cover again. I loved the back cover with the stand and the flap for the pen back then already. But now the tablet pretty much replaced my private laptop.
You have to be aware of the much increased weight, though. This is not a one handed device. But with this huge screen, you can put it in portrait orientation in your lap and the upper part of the screen will be easily far up enough for a comfortable read. Don't forget: its smaller side is almost as big as the wider side of the S6!
It is an amazing device and up at the top of my purchases that left me with the highest satisfaction afterwards.
I didn't own a Tab S6, but a an old Tab 4. I took the leap and purchased the Tab S8 Ultra. There is obviously no comparison between the Tab 4 and Ultra. What I would say is that I'm beyond impressed with the speed of the device. In some instances it's quicker then my S22 ultra or basically on par speed wise. I don't really use the 2nd screen function, but being able to make /pull calls between my S22 and tab is awesome. The speaker quality is great. Don't really use the camera, except for teams meetings. Due to size of screen it's a replacement for my HP Notebook . In my country there isn't really any contracts for the Tab S8 range, so I had to purchase the device cash and I'm very, very happy with my purchase. Multitasking is great. The screen quality is awesome. Watching media content is a pleasure on this device. I got the 65w Samsung trio charger and Samsung keyboard case as part of a bundle. I love the keyboard. I know some have issues typing, but for me it works fine for what I do. The S-pen is something I do use and it works great. Overall it's a great device. I don't know what the difference in speed etc is between the Tab S6 and 8, but if you could get a good trade in or sell the Tab S6, then I would say go ahead and get the Tab S8 Ultra
I have tab s5e, tab s6 and s8+ . In terms of holding single handed, nothing beats the s5e. Between the s6 and s8(not plus) I believe there's not much difference other than faster soc.The second screen function of s8 could be very useful though. I went for the s8+ instead of ultra because wanted a bigger screen but ultra seemed too big for me
I'm getting an 8+ tonight after work. I've been using Samsung phones since the s4 when it originally was released. I skipped the s6, but had one variation or another up to my current s20. I started with galaxy note tablet (2014 edition), upgraded to the tab s6 in 2020 only because my note tab was having battery issues. Now I'm getting the s8+ 5g so I won't have to use Wi-Fi always for my online videos.
I went from the Tab S6 to the S8+.
So far i am very happy with it. It did help i got a good deal from Samsung, and got a decent price for the Tab S6 too.
The extra screen size is very nice, specially with 12L now on the tablet. Great thing for me is that i can browse or watch youtube will a game runs on the side in a small part of the screen without stopping. Or use the taskbar to open your password manager to get some passwords etc.
Its a bit heavier, so it wont be an easy one handed device.
If you used the keyboard cover with touchpad, you can use the one that was also sold with the Tab S7+, i could not get that one from Samsung itself anymore. They do sell one with just a Keyboard, but that one aint detachable, so thats a big minus. I managed to get mine 2nd hand for 60 euro, but there are retailers still selling them. They attach by magnet now, that works a lot easier, and it wont come loose like the Tab S6 one did over time. The one with the detachable keyboard, also has a cover over the S-pen location on the back, the new one doesn't so thats a 2nd strike for me on that cover.
The extra realestate is nice, 12,4 inch is noticable.
If you use the tablet a lot, then i think its a worth while upgrade.

We don't really have benefits of trade-ins or great values the same way many other countries do. I'm in Sweden
But we have a website that usuaully have sepcific deals, that requires that you login (you pay like €2 to get access).
Lots of deals on everything really.
So got the S8+ 5G and the hard cover from Samsung for about €650 with a 6 months of free Samsung care+
Didn't want the Ultra as it was too big for me and also because I have a relatively new notebook already which is 14"
So far I love the extra screen size and the ability to use it as a 2nd monitor when I'm out and about.
As a tablet it is, imo, perfect but biggger would be too big, especially since I have use for a notebook.
But as a tablet it is great and it will be a lot of cloud gaming and movies watched on it on the go. Also some work when I have no access to my notebook.

Sold mine to ReBuy, they refurbish and resell electronics. They offered me 390 for my blue Tab S6. Maybe they also operate in your country?

We have sites like it where you can trade in but they usually never give as good or close to what you can get on the 2nd hand market.
I looked at one of them here and mince, which looks pristine when you remove it from the case is worth about €180 as they use set prices. The worse it is, I get less based form that value as the highest.
Thanks for the tipe though and I will see if I can find others.
So for that I rather sell it myself 2nd hand and get €250 - €300 or just hand it down to my better half that can use it.
I was on a Tab S6 LTE version before I moved to Tab S8 Ultra. S6 served me well for 2 years. I bought it just when Covid lockdowns started and have used it almost daily for 2 years without any issues. Amazing piece of hardware with great sound and screen. I wouldn't have got Tab S8 Ultra if the deal wasnt so good. Basically someone was selling 3 months old Tab S8 ultra along with the official keyboard case for about $1000 which was a steal in my country where this combo would have costed about 1900$.
First thing which hits you is how big the display is compared to Tab S6, it is gorgeous and sound is mind blowing. Only con i would say is that it is a bit on heavier side if you have one part of keyboard case attached to the back for kickstand so it wont be as mobile as tab s6 which was light as a feather. But thats what you pay for such a big screen. I have a pretty new Sony Tv but still I prefer watching a lot of content on S8U because quality is just too damn good.
I just bought the s8 ultra.. I found it used for 3-4 months, 512 - 16 with the keyboard for 800€. I think it's a good price otherwise I wouldn't get it..
I have s6 pro also. The experience of s8 ultra is mixed.. It really is very big. For the average person I think 10.5-11 inches tablet is best solution. But for Netflix, streaming etc is fantastic. I don't know if I will sell s6 as I also use it too, regardless having s8 ultra..
I should probably root s8 ultra to find more uses for it.
I want to use it as a second screen for my pc, but wirelessly the experience is laggy. What rooter should I get to have instant wireless experience as a second screen? Does anyone know? I had spoken to someone in YouTube who did have instant wireless experience but he had gigabit home network or something..
If I buy this cheap rooter do you think it will work?

You don't need to root it to use it as second screen on a pc. Secondly since it has warranty left, rooting will void warranty because it requires bootloader unlock to root it, which voids whole warranty all together once KNOX chip becomes triggered and broken permanently. Then also app like Samsung pass, secret folder is permantly disabled as well since they need working KNOX chip. Maybe you should wait and think when warranty is over.
Update: after re-reading your post i now saw you meant Router not Rooter, since at first I thought you mean what rooting method you wanted to do lol.

I know that.. I already rooted tab s6. I know I don't have to root it for second screen. I want to root it for other things. Anyway I just tried second screen. It works but not very fast. I have a router 300mbit. I'll borrow a 840mbit router of a friend to see if speed is fast enough then..
I'll post my results when I do it.
took the upgrade from s6 to s8 ultra and landed the free keyboard case. no regrets at all
Tab 7 here. Always have luved the tab (since s2). Had my Tab 6 for about 2 months before I got the tab s7. Was a little disappointed that 7 didn't have amoled but it was another good one. The tab s8 plus is everything I could hope for in a tablet... Luving the sh** out of it.
can someone tell about the temperatures of the s8 and s8+ now that it haves the gen 1 please
