[HOW TO - YOUTUBE VIDEO] Root (Magisk) - Galaxy S21 & S21+ & S21 Ultra - Exynos-only - Samsung Galaxy S21 Guides, News

Hello everyone,
Here is a complete step-by-step video guide of a very straightforward method that works flawlessly for rooting the Galaxy S21 (or any other Exynos-based S21 such as the S21+ & S21 Ultra) and installing Magisk onto it.
It only works on Exynos-powered S21 devices (S21 - S21+ - S21 Ultra including all 5G versions), please do not try it on Snapdragon versions.
Enjoy!

Thanks. Classic steps, wonder if really CSC file not HOME_CSC file goes to the CSC slot?

What is the disadvantage of rooting this phone, i just got my S21 on sunday and this is my first samsung phone

I would say that the biggest disadvantage is that it voids your warranty. Other than that, it's only +++

It is recommended to wipe it by using the standard CSC file; maybe it will work with HOME_CSC, that will not wipe the device and it might cause some issues.

Agree except in Europe, it cannot void the warranty. Tripping Knoxx is my first proud duty on each Samsung device
Re HOME_CSC I might quote topnjohnwu classic guide:
"Use HOME_CSC to preserve your data when doing a firmware upgrade in the future. Using CSC is only necessary for the initial Magisk installation."

If I root my S21, will I be able to record calls? How?

For some reason, the bootloader cannot be unlocked in download mode
I think Samsung is the reason
I am on the release BXXU2AUC8
Note, it was booted in reCrecovery mode and then restarted in download mode, but unfortunately, the option to open the bootloader does not appear
update
sorry the right way is vol button up and down same time then connect usb Not vol down and power
thank you

Hi guys,
can u help me with some details. I read few treads about rooting S21 but they all seems to copy from each other and I still couldn’t find reliable answers. I hope to hear from someone who actualy using rooted galaxy phone (and not someone who know someone who heard something)
Is the rooting (with Magisk) completely reversable. Will it “retrigger”Knox to the original state?
Did you actually tried to use apps like online banking/NFC pay or Paypal and it worked (or dont)?

i've heard from someone yes, no, yes, yes rooted every samsung since the first Galaxy model, year by year, ain't a damn thang changed re usability. bankin', paypalin' all day and night. knoxx scaremongering bs and warranty FUD came in 2015, was hacked in first cycle, and then not.. but noone gives a **** about some invisible fuse anymore, certainly not your next buyer after you have enough of the phone, you relock bootloader, flash original firmware, the error screen will disappear and the next user will happily use a completely reversed phone in default state

install xposed plugin Firefds and turn on. Turn on the recording in the official app.

Are you actually using the UpToDate S21 and app like PayPal at this moment?
Your post is exactly what confuses me. If you google for “magisk & paypal” there are loot of posts where people are unable to use banking apps and are looking for help (and that John Wu is working for google for some time now). On the other hand, there are people who say that everything works and “knoxx is scaremongering”, even if the author of this guide has said here "it will permanently trigger Knox”. And I can say as someone who unlocked a few bootloader in the past: there was always something that didn’t work after root.

Gun to my head: i guess so Why would Paypal not work? You must be digging some old information from archives. It's so 2018. PayPal works nonstop, on tons of rooted models, without interruption, for years. Knoxx is so 2015, let's make a funeral for it already. I flashed 5 unique samsungs models last month, i dont share any of your concerns, because all i see is rooted devices work perfectly fine.
You shouldn't be looking for reasons not to root. People recycle the texts as this information didn't change for years. In general: you lose OTA on all brands except OnePlus/Google, and on Samsung you lose "cry me a river" SPay, Secure Folder, S Flow (until you tell Magisk to hide). Some 3rd party stupid (banking?) apps will try to detect root, and you the user will prevent that or troubleshoot individually, by searching on xda. Or stop using it. Sure i don't know have the full list of such ****ty banks, as my bank officially supports root (we the users pointed guns to their heads), but some weird bank can't stop me from rooting. But it's off topic anyways as this is problem (i'd say bug) in specific apps, not in "rooting" or "samsung" or "google" or "johnwu". Don't overthink. Just root

So instead on answering my questions with “No” or “I don’t know” you have decided to describe your feelings. Sourceless posts like yours are one of the reasons why it is so difficult to become a power user.
Very classy of you to call banking apps (which are per default 3rd party) stupid because they trying to avoid fraud. By the way magisk doesn’t have hiding root capability per default anymore.

i knew it could trigger your feelings, but like i say, it works. Power user means you root and than fix situations. That's what i favor over moaning about 2015 knoxx, 2018 paypal, 2020 magiskhide, 2021 topjohnwu in google. At this moment, once again, samsung after samsung, everything works with no divergence. In my case without any effort, so i try to simulate it as im writing this post, grabbed some antiroot ****ty 3rd party app called HDFC Bank -> fixed by hiding it, and hiding Magisk. 3 minutes. This old method still works. If Hide won't work, Xposed will help. If Magisk won't work (lol), we still figure out. I'm far from negative.
if it's the 3rd party apps who don't want people to become power users in the name of false security, let them know. It was indeed very classy of me to call out my ****ty bank when they tried to disallow VPN and then root. Now they have confirmation box to confirm root thanks to us power users. That's cool. 3 minutes saved per user! #GunToAntirootHeads

Root: Do or Don't?

I can't decide if it's worth rooting my S10. I usually always rooted my phones (OnePlus 6, Galaxy S7 etc..) but now that it's way more complicated I hesitate a bit. I kind of want to have Substratum back, and also some CSC mods like call recording.
If I root my S10, how are software updates handled? Do I have to flash the whole firmware with Odin and wipe my phone everytime an update releases?
Thanks!
I rooted (magisk) primarily to get Substratum back - just couldnt get use to the whiteness of the third party apps after using a dark theme.
Also EdXposed is picking up momentum and moduls like Gravitybox and Firefds kit are nice addons.
My banking app works with both Magisk and EdXposed. Dont know about the various Pay apps as I dont use them.
I have no regrets and the only draw back I can see is if you live outside Europe then you might void your warranty.
And yes, you have to flash the pre-patched AP, do a Wipe data/ factory reset whenever there is an update but dont see this as a hassel with Titanium Backup in hand.

Rooting (or modifying stock firmware) will trip knox counter, thus voiding your 1yr warranty. My Note 8's mics stopped working after 10 months... Samsung took care of it. I will keep my S10+, and subsequently, my Note 10 unrooted. Not only for repairs, but some say root breaks S Pay enrollment.
Oh, and did you know software status is a check performed by technicians, among other things?
Call recording works great with Cube ACR from playstore without root

Yes with Cube acr from playstore
Cube ACR only works to record your side of the conversation (like all other call recorders) and does not record remote party. There are some recorders that try to record from the microphone but the audio is not clear and has static noise. Google blocked call recording in Android Pie. Hopefully they will allow it in Android Q.
If you have Asia Exynos CSC, call recording will work as Samsung has it enabled in native dialing app.

What to consider before Rooting?

I was a Sony fan until lately it got a bit not worthy in my opinion.
I had Xperia mini then Xperia z3 compact until 3 months ago (that i got note 9)... it was rooted, custom rom, Xposed and stuff.
I know that by Rooting a Sony phone, you loose DRM features (camera improvement ...) that can be later restored by flashing a DRM fix zip and that's it, you still have everything.
but this is my first Samsung phone so I'm unfamiliar with all stuff(Odin, Knox, etc....)
questions I have:
1_ What I loose by Rooting? can they be restored after root?
2_ Wich method you suggest and why? magisk or SuperSU? or something else
3_ What do you recommend to install/set/tweak/flash after Rooting?
my phone: SM-N960F Running Android 9.0 updated 1 July 2019
Welcome to the dark side my friend!
Your Knox bit will flip from 0x0 to 0x1 - that's the first thing that will happen once you flash a custom recovery & kernel. This means that all Samsung features that check the bit status will permanently stop working; including, but not necessarily limited to, Samsung Pay, Secure Folder, S Health, Samsung Pass, the works. The change is permanent and can not be reversed by erasing everything and returning to stock firmware. As far as long-term effects on rooting go, that's pretty much it. Unlike on Sony Phones, outside these specific applications, there's no impact on other functionality like proprietary camera processing and image enhancement.
These days Magisk is generally recommended. SuperSU has been going downhill for a while, ever since Chainfire retired and handed off the development. It's also the only way to pass Google's SafetyNet checks while rooted.
As for recommended tweaks - well, that's up to your personal tastes. Myself, I'd protect the battery from excess wear by limiting maximum charge to 80%, and set up support for Sony's DualShock 3 I'm sure you'll find that most tweaks you liked on the Sony side will also work here.
You will lose samsung pay as well which supports MST which is a killer feature for me.

I'm okay with, most of it... you know the secure folder is an awesome feature (at least for me) that is built in, super fast and integrated into various apps.
I haven't seen such an app as this stable and secure while maintaining this much functionality over many apps and locations inside the phone.
so that's a 'not sure yet' for me ... ?
can't something be made to reverse or change Knox trip to 0x0 again?
it made me interested... I want to participate or donate to such a project if it's ongoing

Unfortunately, no. When an unsigned kernel is booted, the bootloader will detect it and trip a physical fuse in the SoC. There are ways to fake 0x0 status when fully booted, but since these features check the actual "eFuse", there's really nothing that can be done short of replacing the entire motherboard.
I remember this being a hot topic among developers since the Note 3 days; to this day nobody has claimed the bounty of several thousand dollars sitting in the Note 3 section of XDA Forums.
With root and Dr.Ketan ROM you basically get everything from this device:
- Native call recording
- Full/Half screen caller with native dialer
- All sorts of optimizations, memory management and tweaks
- Youtube Vanced (it can be used without root, but with root is a bit more convinient)
- GPay works with Magisk
You can see the list of all features(they are a ton) on Dr.Ketan ROM thread as well on his page http://www.drketanrom.com/
I was using the same Rom+root on my Note 8, now on my Note 9. I also got his Tweaks Pro app which is paid, but very useful. It's a no-brainer for me since I care much more about the functionalities rather than the warranty of this phone.
Ofc, this is my subjective point of view.
No more Samsung Pass? I like not having to type passwords in all the time. Is there something with similar functionality?

LastPass is free. You can get a paid version but is not necessary.
In all honesty there is really not that much of a benefit in rooting a modern day android device, unless you are a developer or an android hobbiest! As the current iterations of android are pretty good right of the bat!

Why root our phone nowadays?

Hi,
I used to root my phone but since I bought the S10 I found myself using Samsung Pay instead of using my cards all the time.
Before I used to root in order to have:
- Spotify mod, but now you can hack Spotify without root installing a modded version
- adaway but you can still use adhell
- YouTube vanced worked on non-root device
So do you think it's worth rooting the phone to maybe removing some bloating and add some minor customisations but lose Samsung Pay?

i think yeah, debloating is the first thing to pushed me to root, but more reasons exist, like tweaks to systemui, backups, also this time i use it to be able to mock locations on pokemongo hehe.
The only thing stopping me to root my s10 was securefolder, because the warranty doesn't mind if you break, wet, loose the phone and since someone found a way to use it theres no other reason to not root for me

I DO NOT ROOT ANYMORE!
Debloating is NO LONGER an excuse either!! Infact the phones are SUPER EASY to remove ALL the bloatware from!!!
Just flash a stock "unlocked" firmware and boom, bloatfree.. you dont even need to sim unlock!!!
Modded Apks are good enough for me, and work fine on unrooted devices.
You maintain ALL features...
AND YOU KEEP YOUR WARRANTY INTACT!!!
Some apps only work with root. Root also gives you access to install a custom recovery which can be used to make nandroid backups of the phone. Something stock recovery can't do unless you use the flash fire app in which case you need root to use it.

warranty is not a deal with because probably I'll break my phone before any factory issue also a full debloated stock firmware?
im not telling you to root but for me is not a need is because i like to do it. manually debloting a rom, use of apps that need device admin without grant it, backups, kernel wireless and framework tweaks, ui customization and a lot of things you can do with root only
Couple of reasons why I have it rooted:
- Replace the ugly Samsung Emoji for any other (I use the legacy but updated blobs).
- Full disable Google if you care "a bit" about privacy.
- Remove Bixby and remap without accepting their contract.
- Full VPN, Android by default don't tether internet with VPN
In overall, rooting is needed if you want to own your device and care about privacy. People have more usage for rooting, but that's why I prefer rooting.
The main reasons I used to root were
-Install black theme. These days every manufacturer offers black themes and Google also offers black themes.
-Adaway for ads removal. There are many alternatives for non rooted devices.
-Viper 4 Android for superior sound. I bought an external DAC which is much better.
-Debloating. Nowdays we are able to remove most of the apps we don't want.
I like my rooted LG G4 a lot, but I need my S10 to use my bank apps without hassle, so I will probably never root it.
Not any real important reasons that usually can't be done some other way, sometimes because their friends are doing it.

Rooting is cool, only cool kids root :good:
I root my phone just because I want to have the freedom to do what I want.
I like to modify config files for apps (whatsapp for example - better photo quality, larger videos and so on).
Adhell isn't working anymore and non-root adblockers including AdGuard DNS are either sucking battery or you need to disable it often to enter websites. You can't add filters to the DNS. Adaway works great on root.
Also Substratum or similar is great and I like the Swift Black theme.
For me it's more the principe. Before I switched to Android I used to have jailbroken iPhones, only - and I loved the freedom.
But since my warranty's void and my USB port got destroyed by fake moisture I'm thinking about to suppress my thoughts of "Android freedom" - the repair shop wanted 400€ for switching the mainboard. I let them send my S10 back and now VaultKeeper prevents booting...and without USB I don't have any chance to use the phone.
So, rooting is great but if your device got damaged it gets expensive.
It's annoying that the phone brands are working so hard to prevent rooting without any logical reason...VaulKeeper and KNOX are just two examples just by Samsung. Huawei, for example, disabled the unlocking of their devices completely, this was the reason for me to switch to Samsung.

S20FE (Snapdragon) (SM-G781B): Force remove GameOptimizationService howto -

For anyone that has been struggling to remove this damn app (com.samsung.android.game.gos), I found the solution (atleast for me on my S20FE (G781B). It goes without saying you WILL need root enabled on your device for this method!
Fair warning you do this at your own risk
Go to the Googleplay and install 'File Explorer (by jrummy) ', or download it from apkmirror. Then open up the app and go to root then system then priv-app - /system/priv-app
There will be a folder in there called 'GameOptimizationService', select the folder and then select delete.
Then via adb, check and remove the app again, you should get a 'failure' message meaning its already been removed so you will never see a toast popup error agaib (happy days) -
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.games.gos - see below for revissed instructions
Now as I find the theme app & service pointless I have gone and remove that also, but I will need to monitor is long term to see what side effect (if any) that will have. The upside is it removes is from the list in the settings app.
[update] Courtesy of @justin22 we now know you don't have to remove the app just use an alternative method to hide - 'pm hide com.samsung.android.games.gos' This will have the same effect, as in stop the app from running in the background which then stops the annoying popups.
Moved this to its own post to make it easier for people to find -

Ah Sweet, thanks for that. Have been looking for that for a while, didn't occur to me to click on that button, doh!
This worked well on Tab S7.. Thanks
Great that you found a solution, too bad it has to be on a rooted phone.
The only reason i won't root my phone is beacuse of using samsung pay and some banking apps
I still hope samsung will eventually come to its senses and either fix this GoS crap or allow us to completely remove it
It's driving me nuts that i cant play games without lag on my phone (Galaxy s9+)
Hi @b1k3rdude
I am using a galaxy Tab S4 with android 10. Not rooted. Root privileges caused me more hassle than benefits so I flashed the stock image again. I also went thru the painful and deep debloating process. I would love to send you my debloat list, if you'd like to review it.
If I remember correctly I left the 3 gos apps. Dunno why. Are you telling me that if I remove them, my GPU won't throttle anymore?
The only way I could make the GPU stop throtthling was with mtweaks. I set the clock speeds to max. But the temps went crazy. But hey, I got no major framedrops from 60 to 40-30 like I was having before.
I have recently bought a Tab S7 hoping that the frame drop thing was gone. I was wrong. Same game (Rules Of Survival), same maxed out settings (max quality, max resolution, max FPS, no shadows, no MSAA), same debloat (on the S7 I deleted the GOS stuff too but not the system folder you mentioned) and I was still experiencing frame drops. Not as bad as before but they were still there. And you know what?! Lowering the settings did not improve AT ALL the performance. I have already returned the S7 because it had some weird touchscreen problems.
I think I might stick with the S4 until some Chinese company won't come out with a nice and powerful android tablet. Lenovo has got the P11 PRO but it's less powerful that the S7 and it costs more LOL. But without all that Sammy crap it might perform better.
My OnePlus Nord can handle Rules Of Survival ways better than my Tab S4 and similarly to what the Tab S7 was doing.
Edit: back in the days when I rooted the S4 I was talking to a friend of mine who addressed me to that damn thing called DVFS that downclocks the GPU when it's under load causing those massive framedrops.
I remember that DVFS nonsense. games would perform wonderfully for about 10 seconds then turn to crap. it was a cheat for better benchmark scores if I recall the theories of the day.
tell me Samsung doesn't still use that ?

I don't play games on my phones, so I cant help you there I am afraid (I have a high end desktop PC for gaming).
I just didn't want the service running in the background, constantly complaining via toast notifications that some Samsung apps/services it wanted weren't running.
com.samsung.android.games.gos doesnt need to be deleted/removed
a simple
pm hide com.samsung.android.games.gos
kills the app without changing anything, besides the state of the package.
pm hide is great for stuff that ignores pm disable !!
its as if the package was removed.

Ah cool, thanks for that, I will add this to the OP.
This no makes me wonder how many other apps you could do this on, for example could we get away with this on com.samsung.android.kgclient for example without causing a softlock..?
I would test this, but cant untill twrp for this device get updated with external sdcard support. [update] - you can backup/restore to an external USB drive (I went and bought a USV-C to NVME enclosure and a 256GB SSD for this.
nah,I wouldnt touch that one (kgclient) ... another app I tried to hide was com.ims(service).something... but the system got sluggish, and I was glad that I could enable it again.
pm hide is like it was uninstalled, but the package remains...so be CAREFULL !!!!!!!!
I use automagic for my trial and errors.
I build a flow which consists of <disable/hide package> - <timer : 60sec> - <enable/unhide package>
its kind of a failsafe.if nothing happens.. GREAT and I stop the flow,if the system gets buggy but not rebooted, then after 60secs the package is active again.
also I add the <enable/unhide package> action to the autostart flow.. hoping that this would get executed even if the lockscreen is locked (not sure though about this one).
Later I add a label in titaniumbackup to the frozen apps,so I hope that I can restore (refreeze) frozen apps if I should EVER have to do a factory reset again.
Without TWRP my desire to freeze anymore packages is kinda low,as I always have to accept to do a factory reset if I disable the wrong package
Btw.. when there will be a TWRP (T870).. you dont have to do a factory reset when flashing the twrp package right ??

Same, I know @afaneh92, is working on getting ext. SD card support atm.
If its an updated version of twrp, you just flash from ODIN. You DO NOT have to touch the phone (eg doing factory reset and such).
thanks for the info !
I looked for a TWRP for SM-T870,but I didnt find anything (only S7+).
So there is a TWRP for T870,just without xSDsupport right now ?
If so where can I find it/OR is there a post where I can check for progress/or info (when its ) available ?
@justin22 I just had a check myself, there's no development of TWRP posted here for you.
from android 10 released devices onwards TWRP development is much harder. google has changed the way partitions are organised from what I've read. root is more involved now too. development on lots of Samsung devices has slowed right down. we need devs to own these devices I think to be motivated. we're looking at months of waiting especially with bootloader unlock in the US not being free for now.
@3mel : again thanks for the info !
When I got my S7,I couldnt shake the feeling that this will be my last Samsung device.Alone the ****ty warning screens every time I reboot, all the crap installed, and pointless apps/processes you cant get rid of without bricking the whole thing (kgclient(payment),...).
And now no TWRP...

Same, each time SS keep making it harder for use to root and flash custom recovery and roms to our devices.
You can flash boot animations to remove this.
We have TWRP, just no Ext SD card support atm. And without an S20FE the dev cant work on this :-(
do you have a tutorial /thread/link for boot ani flash &/or T870 TWRP (even without SDcard support) ? (I couldnt find ANY twrp for the T87xx(S7) series, only the T97xx (S7+)

I had a look and there was nothing on this site, other than the TWRP site there's no other place I'd trust if they said they had it. best thing might be to ask in the other tab 7 TWRP threads if they'd be compatible with SM-T870 or if they could made so.
if that's the newest sexy tab with the S-pen you've got, it should have a few users who feel the same way. also check whether it has a locked bootloader, that'll be a big factor if half the world's devs can't flash test builds.
TWRP development sounds like a real pig of an affair nowadays
TWRP and Android 10
Please note that this post is primary related to TWRP and the Pixel 3 and 4 and devices that may ship in the future that ship with Android 10 as their origin...

Just tried this but got a security exception thrown. A quick search explained that Google actually removed hide a while ago?
If anyone has an alternative that would be great. Disable doesn't work for game services as it restarts straight away.

Question Pros and cons with rooting a Galaxy S23?

I just got my Galaxy S23.
Previously I've always rooted all my phones. But my previous phone is old, so much may have changed in the last six years. So I'm trying to decide whether to root the S23 or not.
What are some pros and cons with rooting the Galaxy S23?
If you want to have full control over your device, root is the way.
I, for example, want to have VPN and firewall on to controll which app and how can connect to internet, combining also with adblock and I simply has no other way to achieve that.
Also I found it outrageous not to have full control over device I paid for.
Cons are that you will loose Samsung Pay and Pass. The rest of the Samsung goodies is patchable to get working through Knox patch. And you won't be able to get to pre-unlocked state cause your Knox status will be permanently changed. And also you will have to install all updates manually. And, obviously, your warranty will be void.

Good response. Thank you!
No need to root nowadays, you can install any apps, modded apps by just allowing unknown sources.
Apps such as Spotify mod to get somewhat access to premium, Youtube Vanced...don't require root access.
Also apps such as Greenify, adBlocks offer non-rooted mode - even if not as powerful it isn't a deal breaker.
But mostly losing access to the Pay apps (Samsung Pay...) is a big issue to me and there is no way back!
I used to root my devices but really I don't feel like it's necessary anymore.
I'm yet to hear about an app, customisation that would motivate me enough to root my phone.

Lol, you forget that people thinking this is probably less than 1% of the people. The rest of the people just want a phone that works.
Not having root access is a security and safety thing, as being able to change root files could end up with people bricking their phone if they don't know what they're doing.
Personally, I feel the same as @ValouSydney
Currently, there's barely any need for root as all good apps/features are already available within android and the play store.
This is the first phone I won't be rooting as I want to be able to use Samsung pay, use my banking app etc and update without issue.
the comments are misleading, you dont lose access to banking apps or wallet. Its only Samsung pay. Just use google pay.
I made a post about lspatch, which is supposed to be xposed without root. hope it gets traction

Thanks for sharing this - any suggestions of modules to install that are worth using?
