hello everyone, noob here, and have a noob question about android... - Introductions

Hello everyone, i'm noob in xda-developers and custom android roms in general. i've read some thread in here about making your own custom rom etc... So.. years ago i bought my first android phone, it was a local brand using msm8610 chipset. Now i already have newer phone, and my first phone is now obsolete. Now that i have a phone that i can play with, i want to understand more about making your own rom. while there's so much that i dont understand, here's what i think i know. To create a custom rom for your device, you at least have to compile your own kernel and make boot.img, and then combine those with some custom rom that you can find on the web.
Now what i want to know as a noob is this... Can we just extract the kernel from my phone's boot.img, then extract the device tree from that kernel, then find a phone with the same chipset(which in my case is msm8610), extract the kernel of that device and then replace the DTB with my device? can it? if it can, how do i put the dtb back to the other device's kernel? and if it can't, why can't it be done this way? i'm asking this questions because i find it hard to find the source kernel for my device since it's a local brand... i hope that masters in this forum can explain it to me in layman's term.... thank's in advance...

hello again... btw did you know the answer to my question about putting back DTB to the kernel.... i want to ask in Q&A section, but, since i'm a noob, i'm afraid that it will get me banned if i posted there...

Don't be afraid, go for it.
If you don't violate the rules you won't get banned.
Just make sure to post it into the relevant thread.

granted, you did not use any question marks, but had you used correct punctuation, there would be.
Consider the parts of a rom you want to change. THEN look for answers or tutorials regarding those individual pieces. There is no one quide for creating a rom, but the tons of threads with tutorials for individual components that make up a rom will ultimately guide you to everything you could want to do.
i can't remember the exact name for it right now, but there was a thread about this a while back about starting to mess around with making roms. also there is a thread about unpacking and re-packing boot images which will probably some system understanding as well. I personally do not know how to go about making a rom from scratch, but i think they may have something about how to compile the source here or here. its worth a read anyways i guess.
people on here are dicks and hate to see someone wanting to learn something. like really hate it, with a passion.
being insulted from the guy that released a rom and didn't even know that it had to be signed (tested how)
Moved. Enough flaming.
It's like saying how do I build my computer from scratch. What do you really want? A how to guide that somehow already knows which type of ROM you want to cook, what you are planning to do with it, and teaches you how to use linux, java, and android all at the same time?

All wrong sectionry aside, you didn't find a thread or a guide because there isn't one.. It's something you'll kind of figure out when you're ready. It sounds like I'm being a total elitist d*ck, but I'm not. Knowing how to create a rom from scratch is a culmination of knowledge and research over a long time. If someone posted a step-by-step guide it still wouldn't tell you what you need to know.
thanks for the ACTUAL helpful comments guys i'll take a browse thru forums bit more for the stuff i wanna change\edit learn

Why no Sticky? Need help rooting my phone

Hi There!
I believe that in order to load these ROMs in this thread, you need to "root" the phone, but I don't see a sticky that explains how to do it?
Also is it like with Windows Mobile phones that you need a separate radio rom to the OS ROM?
Thanks in advance for any advice?
I take it the official update for Froyo for the i9000 isn't released yet? Is this something that happens automatically over the air or you need to initiate it?
Why so sucky thread title?
What do you mean? No roms in this thread ;p
Btw most ROMs in this subforum are already rooted and while ur current ROM is overwritten (being either rooted or not) in the flashing process... Ur device becomes rooted after flashing most of them. For more detailed information go to ROM's threads.
Root is kernel-related thing, so I dont get ur point.

Hi There!
I may be using the wrong terminology, I am looking for flash proedures for the ROM's in this forum. I thought the process of applying those roms required you to root the phone before use (like hardspl for winmo roms).
I am looking for the step by step guide to applying the ROMS's listed here?
Refer to each rom's thread.
Full stock leaked firmwares come in .tar packages, flashed by Odin.
Mods and custom roms might be flashed by Odin, or update.zip method.
I believe there was some BIG FAT FAQ in this subforum?
// oh its in general : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
You forgot to read the stickies... There's this one: STOP!! Before You Post, Read This NOW!! and in that you see this:
General - general technical discussion items, news, anything else that does not fit into the other fora categories.
Q&A (Questions and Answers) - all questions, irrespective of type, get posted in here whether they be theme related, accessory related, technical, etc.
Accessories - any items to do with components and/or accessories relating to your device.
Rom Development - only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here.
Themes & Apps - anything to do directly with the development of themes and/or applications. Nothing else goes in here.

Now you see the general section? If you go there you'll find this sticky: [REF] BIG FAQ! {Flash/Root HOWTO} {ADB&Tutorials} {T&T} {FW-Guide} [MUST READ!] Which has everything you need.
Thanks. To be honest it makes no sense to me to have something about flashing ROMS in the general forum, at a minimum I think it should be in both places.

[Q] dump rom from phone

Hi All,
Please would someone be so kind and explain how to make a rom from a phone using anything would be good, but preferably flashable via odin
What i am asking is how to dump an I9000 rom so that I can flash it via Odin on a I900 once again, not porting just a basic dump.
i'm interrested too
Really dude? Read stickies, search, read up a ton before posting stupidly pointless threads like this. Sorry, but this is a busy forum and people like you asking baseless questions aren't a part of it.
In case you didn't know, porting ROMs from devices is extremely hard. There is progress going on porting HTC Sense from the Desire HD but it's extremely time consuming and difficult even for very experienced devs.

Did you do a search? well there is FA info at all on this topic, and I am not looking at porting a rom, i simply want to dump my rom as is as a image.
dd i guess could work, but how the hell do make it odin friendly?

Which am I, the one asking the baseless questions or the one telling others not to? =P
Dumping a ROM is definitely different than porting from another device, but the way your question stated you wanted to take a dump from another phone (Desire for example) and then magically stick that in Odin and make it work or something. Sorry for misunderstanding.
I take it you want to dump your current ROM and then publish for others to use, like Nandroid backup style? I guess that might be interesting although I'll personally stick to cooked ROMs like Docs that are ready to flash with all optimizations and changes applied at the get-go.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for life. Cryptic as it may be, but I guess the OP is interested in trying to make a backup.
I know samfirmware has most of the firmwares, but it would be nice to know how to create a flashable rom.
Some of us really would like to know how to do this. Samfirmwares does not have all the roms. They do not have the ntt docomo rom for japan on their site. The phone was just released the 28 October with the official 2.2 froyo rom on it. I would like to walk in the store dump the rom from their demo phone to sd card. Put the rom on my phone. I really want get my sp mode working. I have rom mananger. Does rom manager do rom dumps with the back rom option.
I agree this seems like a good idea, my bad for not understanding the Cyrptic OP lol
I don't think we get nandroid backups right now. I don't think anyone has taken a dump from a running SGS and turned it into a flashable ROM. I just know that Doc, Tatyuma and others have taken Samsung's packages and cooked them into their nice flashable zips.

[Q] Is there a list of roms that are updateable thru ROM MGR clockwork?

Im sorry but I Didnt see a thread dedicated to this feature. I apologize in advance if this has been covered elsewhere.
Y!S
All roms are flashed via CWM unless they say to do it differently in their thread. CM7 is about the only one that's not done this way.
Nobody gives install instructions anymore since it should be common knowledge if you did your research.
Also, this is NOT a development question. We have a Q&A section for these types of questions.
all custom roms come with CWM built into the kernel.
once you have a custom rom you DONT USE rom manager anymore.
also this is the DEVELOPMENT section.
DO NOT POST QUESTIONS HERE!!!
questions go in Q&A

you guys are misunderstanding his question, ROM manager is capable of sending out OTA's for individual ROM's if the ROM creator implements this feature. as far as I know, there are yet to be any ROM's that use this in the Captivate section, though please tell me if I'm wrong. CM7 will use this feature once it's capable of using ROM manager through a properly functioning param.ko
as for you two, no need to be so aggressive/rude. you didn't answer his question properly and were a bit extreme in your judgment toward him. but as for you OP, they are correct in that this isn't truly related to development and is more suited to "General" or "Q&A" from now on.
my point was nobody uses rom manager after stock anymore.
if someone cant properly post, they wont get a full complete answer

Hey TRusselo you have gone beyond making it known that I posted in the wrong section but no matter how I look at your answers you still come across as a big fat jerk. There isnt any need whatsoever for you to post that.. and then to come back and repeat yourself with another entry saying the SAME thing and MAINTAINING the attitude.. you got my attention.
Kaik541 did answer my question. I was wondering if any devs have used this feature in rom manager. For over the air updates.
As to the reason why I posted in the DEVs section was because i thought that it was a development question. ROMS updated over the air thru ROM MANAGER is implemented by DEVELOPERS. It stands to reason why i have not seen any notes in any DEVELOPERS release and that is apparently no DEVELOPERS are using this feature. I hope that I made it understood as to WHY I posted in the dev section. I am now more familiar with the rules so I do beg your pardon for posting in the wrong place.
Nightly builds that can be updated over the air seems like it would really be something that a DEV would utilize with all the tweeks contently done to these roms. I for one look forward to having such a useful tool.

Nightly builds aren't considered updates. They are made so the flash happy people have something else to play with and test for the devs. They aren't meant for everyone to use as DD's. Utilizing this feature for nightlie's would end up with TONS of questions from newbs that don't know how to fix what they just did.
This has been brought up a few times and to be honest with all the possible issues that could come across from OTA updates like flashing a bad file cause you lost connection for a split sec and didn't notice, I wouldn't use it. The first att OTA update proved this. Thousands of bricks, then it was released by Kris update. Alot less bricks.

HELP me with this CFroot!!!

hey i really dont understand what is CFroot and it complications, i have a few questions if some developer or someone really knowledgeable person here can answer pls for me and all the noobs out here. and i bet ya all, even some of the really talented and well experienced people out here might also be dodged with these questions:
Q1- is the stock LPY rom safe? the one which we download from xda which is like 500 mb or something?
Q2- what is CFroot? is it harmfull to do full wipe with this?
Q3- what is my kernal in the stock rom which is 500 mb or something? i cant understand it so i attached a screen shot if u can tell me.
Q4- with this (stock rom downloaded and flashed) kernal and everything which u can see in my screen shot can i flash the CWM and root my phone safely with out and issues? can u pls for the sake of android brotherhood, give me some details? i know i can find that in many threads but as i already mentioned do this favor and explain it here for the sake of android brotherhood!
Q5- rocket rom and midnote rom are out for LPY can i flash them with no issues?
i will be really great full to the people helping cause this LPY and BRICKING issue have really been pain in my a** for a couple of days and i m really so afraid to flash without complete knowledge of things.
thanks

no i have posted in the right section and the topic is not a question! and THANKS for your help!
Loose your attitude, it wont let you go far on here. And DEV section is only for Development not Q&A which your thread clearly is. As you see the Mod has already done that. Thirdly there are plenty of places you can read about it.
Anyway...
CFroot is chainfire root and its the kernels/CWM/CFroot mixed together creating problems. No one is sure which one it is.
To make it sure its better not to do any wipes from CFroot CWM, If you want to do full wipe, use abyssnote4.2. then flash your rom on top.
Your kernel is already LPY, which is the latest one. As said above and as in Rocketrom ICS thread install it like that. You should be fine. But then again if you are not sure, then its better late than sorry..
