Question My first ever phone with display cutout, how to adjust statusbar height? - Redmi Note 10 Pro

I've tried my best to keep my hands off cutout phones until this one. Can't help myself, the value is insane.
Anyway, I've always liked my phone on lower side of DPI. the thing is, the statusbar height does not change with any different DPI value, like it is with normal phones with no cutout. This is minor, but it bugs the hell out of me.
I'm on latest EU ROM, Magisk rooted

Nexus One too bright

Is there a way to lower the brightness beyond the default minimal setting? I've noticed that even on the lowest setting, I can still use the thing like a flashlight.

Too bright? Haven't heard that one. Mainly complaints about not bright enough in the sunlight and such.
I'm no programmer or anything, but as far as I know the android system has a brightness value of 0-100%, and the user (or apps) can change the value to anywhere in between. There might be a hack to undervolt the screen, but as far as I know one doesn't exist.
I'm guessing he has an AMOLED... in which case, I understand. The screen is bloody bright, even on the lowest setting.
My only idea would be to install one of the CM roms that lets you use the surface flinger mod to change your display to a monochrome red.
download 'screen filter' or 'total screen control' from the market. they allow you to apply a dark layer dim your phones screen to however much you want. hope this helps
Only time I really notice mine is too bright is reading if I use white on black, so I use a grey on black.. Fixed.
Although yeah, if i poke into the market first thing in the morning or such, it's pretty bright.
Problem with the screen overlays with surface flinger and such is you have to manually enable/disable them. It would be nice if the screen would go lower in some cases.

Changed Density to 190

Been playing with the Bionic for a day now, (came from LG G2X) and it's pretty amazing. Have it all rooted and such.
Used "Root Explorer" and decided to changed the density from 240 to 190. Looks very nice on that big screen. Everything seems to be working normally, except the lock screen is a little funky. But I didn't mind.
I've never done or heard of changing the pixel density before. What does it do and how did you do it please?

Ohhhhh. If you have used ROMS for other phones, for me it was the X, then you would know about that. Like "Liberty toolbox" and not other "Tool-boxes" let you turn screen settings up or down. To the thread starter, any way to get a pic of "Before" and "After"?

It's an effect you put on the framebuffer to give the illusion of having a higher resolution on your phone. If you lower the pixel density value, it will make everything more spaced out and smaller in general, giving the illusion of the phone having a higher resolution. It adds nothing besides a placebo affect and breaks certain things, such as the lockscreen and the background image for the pull-down bar. If you don't care about those things, you can try it out and test it for yourself. I recommend a value of 200.
Check out lcd density in the market, it is free and there are some screen shots. I have mine set at 200. Make sure to get spare parts from the market and turn off compatibility mode to make some of the troublesome apps fill the screen.
200/220 seems to be the nicest with the pentile display and century gothic as the new stock font, anything lower and you really really see the pixels...bleh

Best DPI?

I always used 290 on my nexus 4 and it was great.
I really don't like how big the icons are stock. Any suggestions?

I use Nova, Google Launcher icons are stupidly big
320 maybe
I wouldn't go 320... the stock value is 480.
I use 440, it's perfect for me. It could be smaller (but 320 is WAY too small), but with the large screen and bumbling one-hand use 440 is perfect. Plus if you don't use XGELS to modify the launcher settings, it adds a 5th column in the app drawer.
I will also add: if you change the DPI at all, Moto Display will be weird. It's just graphical, off center and funky icons. Xposed module App Settings allowed me to change the DPI of just Moto Display back to 480 and problem solved.
how do you change the dpi? the large icons are bugging me too

The large icons aren't a dpi issue, it's just the style of the Google launcher

Edit the build.prop.
I just use the app "textdroider dpi" to adjust mine
Just rooted 5.0. On 4.4.4, I had my DPI at 400 with the Xposed Module App Settings to correct Moto Display. Obviously, that's not an option on Lollipop. So, my questions is, does anyone know a way to correct this while maintaining a similar DPI to 400 and do it without Xposed?

Don't think there really is a fix.. With xposed you could do per app DPI.. I've learned to deal with it being a little off center using 420 dpi

That was my plan but then I noticed that after some time it seemed to re-center, but the actual active portion of the screen doesn't. So I have to slide to the left of the actual unlock icon to unlock it (???). Weird.
I'm interested too, those icons and applications are too big for me. I feel like we don't benefit of the entire 5.2" screen 1920x1080 and 441 ppi... it shows exactly the same amount of content as a 4.2" screen with 150 ppi. I would be happy to find a little fix too, I have not enough skills to build it.
Maybe the key is to come back to Nexus' line, but the Moto X 2014 seem so perfect except that point.
Just install nova launcher

Tried it. Indeed the desktop is better, but each time I launch an application like Youtube, Whatsapp or Settings for example, it feels I'm a old person who needs very big font size. I would like to see more on my screen, with smaller font size then.
Setting ourself the DPI would have been great.
I edit with pro build dpi with root explorer , perfect.
regards
Anybody else noticed that the phone icon hasn't updated to the flatter one after update?... Looks out of place
Well, I decided to keep my XT1092 and try it out with some tweaks. I'm on Lollipop 5.0 (22.21.19 reteuall).
I firstly unlocked the bootloader, secondly I rooted it with Multitool 4.1, and finally I used "adb shell wm density XXX" to change the DPI to 360.
PERFECT : I have no glitches at all, even Active Display is OK. So I recommend this very easy method to be happy with a good screen DPI.
Edit : my bad, after the 1st reboot, I have same problem with Active Display, but it's worth it.
There will be Xposed soon I hope, then I'll take it back.

I found this too, but ended up going back to stock DPI for another reason as well: the back button does not get properly sized when you adb the DPI, it looks too big. Same goes for some of the status bar icons (for example the battery is larger than other buttons). Then there's the glitches like your profile icon in hangouts being way too big, the top developer icon in play store being way out of position, and the triple dots under the middle word suggestion on google keyboard being too large. Changing DPI is just a hassle and makes the phone uglier, which is a real bummer because this phone desperately needs a better DPI setting.

I don't have your problems...
Maybe it depends on which number DPI you are, mine seems OK with all of this. Also, I set "Small" font size in the settings. I got one "big" problem for me anyway, I can't use Swiftkey with this, there is a strange bug with this keyboard, I will post an screenshot later.

Thoughts on keyboard position on all-screen phones

After a week of using the 6T, I noticed that my typing wasn't as accurate as it was on my Moto Z Play. My thumbs also were a little uncomfortable when typing for a while. I realized that because of the screen extending further down the screen on the 6T vs the MZP, I had to move my thumbs much more down the phone than before. After playing around with the floating function of the Google Keyboard, I found a position that is more comfortable (image attached), and my accuracy has improved as well. The keys are now in a more natural position, lining up right next to where my thumbs fall when holding the phone.
The other option is also holding the phone lower, thereby placing thumbs where the keyboard lies on this phone. The downside of that for me is that I have to shift my hands up and down the phone to get my thumbs to the top of the screen. Time will tell which solution I prefer.
Out of curiosity, I wanted to see if anyone else who is coming from a phone that had a much larger chin than the 6T has had the same challenges. It may be also that I'm just getting old, and my hands are less flexible.
how do you make the gboard float like that? I can't seem to find it in settings.

Tap the g in the upper left, then the triple dots top right, look in the lower right?
This will be a necessity for me if I ever talk myself into upgrading my MZP to a 6T as well. My stubby, clumsy thumbs will have nothing to do with a keyboard all the way at the bottom of the device.
Actually recently got rid of nav bar for gesture nav on the MZP, and this helps in that scenario too.
I just got my OP6T today and I'm pleasantly surprised by the phone. Maybe the screen is not as sharp as my previous U11 but the difference is quite small so I think I can live with that for now. The secondary thing is like the OP mentioned typing on the keyboard. I tried using the phone with gestures and even though its really easy to navigate around the UI, writing is just horrible. Space bar is so low that I have to hold the phone really low in order to right properly. With standard navigation bar everything is ok. Tried floating keyboard but its so weird to type and look down to see what you are writing.
Also it's so funny that everyone is chasing the 99% front display ratio but at the same time interaction with the phone suffers a lot and we have to find ways to go around obstacles created but those almost full front display phones.
I use Minuum keyboard with adjustable spacebar height independent of the adjustable keyboard height.

The notch

Hey,
This is my first phone with a notch despite all those times I said I would never get a phone with a notch I don't want to miss out top phones for the next years until the fad goes away.
Anyway as I feared the notch is a pain in the arse no matter what the tech press have said for the last few years how they don't interfere blah blah.
Several games I tried have the notch obscuring vital parts of the game exactly where the notch is.
I thought I would try the hide the notch option in settings, stupidly I thought that this would not only hide the notch but adjust the screen size so the app was in the visible area only.
NO.
Using this setting the black bar to hide the notch actually goes over the app and obscures a whole line now instead of just the notch area.
Seriously how do people survive a notch?
Is it poor implementation on Huawei's end?
How can I make this better for myself?
Arguably I'd say that's the fault of the games at this point.
Huawei has/had some API related to notch position and size, but Google integrated an official way to query for these (called Cutouts in the SDK) in Android 9.
I'd expect applications that are aware of 9/aren't old games never to be updated for a while to be notch aware at this point. They could
* test for a notch and not go full screen and scale the game accordingly (leaving the notch 'bar' out - you lose some pixels but nothing is hidden).
* (arguably harder) test for a notch and avoid that area if that's possible for the game UI
> Seriously how do people survive a notch?
Honestly, the P20 Pro notch is a pain in the ass. It's unbearable. It's the worst idea ever.
But the P30 Pro? It's tiny and I never noticed it, neither in normal usage nor for gaming.
First phone with a notch for me too. Have absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. Doesn't bother me at all.
Trying to embrace it and in general is fine but for a couple of games it is in the way.
I could live with the black bar if the screen scaled instead - this should be done by Huawei for sure in the screen management, why give you an option to black bar and hide notch if it hides more of the visible image. It makes no sense when they could scale the image so you see it all.
