[Q] HTC 8S or Nokia Lumia 620 ?!

Hi All ,
Want to give WP8 a try with a mid-range device as i already have Galaxy S3 and Xperia Mini
best devices i can found suitable to my budget are HTC 8S and Nokia Lumia 620
in a direct comparison the 620 is better as it has a front camera , NFC , Multi-Band WiFi and 8GB of storage while the main better in 8S is it's battery
so which device you recommend , 8S or 620 ?!
or shall i discard the all idea of getting a WP8 device
Thanks in advance
The 2 things u should discard is those crappy Android phones, and get a decent WP8 phone

Back to what really matters, I don't like the 620 because of it's cheap plastic feel and bad eperience with previous Lumia series devices, which doesn't mean this one has the same glitches, but definitely the looks doesn't convince me... Anyway, if you really use video call/conference, the 620 is the way to go. Also the 8GB is another strong selling point in favor of the 8S.
About the 8S, I own one and it feels a superior phone comparing with my S2. Small, but robust and the soft touch really makes it stand out of the competition. The lack of front facing camera isn't a big issue to me because I don't use it, but the 4GB of storage is a limitation... I'm not the kind of person that installs apps for everything or just for fun, I just install what I really need, and so it is enough, but I admit it's a limitation.
Get the 620
100% get a 620 - I have owned both and i can tell you that everything works better on the Nokia. Although I prefer the look and feel of the 8S, the 620 is probably the best budget phone you can buy, with and front facing camera, 8GB storage (+mircoSD support up to 64GB), app services like Nokia Music and Nokia Drive and the size feels really good in the hand. I think the HTC 8S has one big problem - 4GB memory which is not enough as with a clean flash only gives you 1.7GB free space, and you cant install apps on to the SD Card.
I personally bought Lumia 620 few days ago, just to get some feeling where WP8 is, after few years of Android. I have to admit that I like how it feel in hand, sturdy while still possible to use with 1 hand. Personally not sure if I keep this phone (something about WP just keeps rubbing me wrong way) but atleast this gives some nice bonuses with all Nokia added bonuses (lenses, music app etc).
And tbh, if you gonna risk going to WP8 to try it out, go with Lumia 620. You get Nokia Music and Drive+ as nice bonuses to fairly nice phone.

Get the 620, it has nicer colors, front facing camera, 8 gigs of memory, it's a Nokia, Nokia Apps included, replaceable 3.5 mm jack, smaller screen and supersensitive screen as 920 and 820! The only thing that i hate about the 620 is its 1300 mah battery
I dont think the 620 can be considered as a mid range device.....It's nokia's low end lumia phone.....If you're looking for midrange, get he 820...
I see the Nokia Lumia 620 does not have a dedicated section on xda forum, not sure if I can request that of an admin / mod?
I should very much like to buy one for my Dad as they can be had for £150, however I am yet to find a guide / thread on here about getting it unlocked?
may be soon released lumia 720 will filling the gap between 820/620

I can't stress this strongly enough: don't go near the 8S, the 4GB of memory and the WP8 other storage bug mean that you won't be able to install much more than a handful of apps before hitting the dreaded storage limit. I had to uninstall pretty much everything I had on mine just to get Evernote to install and run.
I'm not sure how bad this is on other handsets but the 8S is crippled by it.
The 8S is a beautifully made device, nice in the hand and packing a decent screen and camera, but all of that is negated by the memory problem.
Hi. Take HTC it,s better.

I recently faced the same choice and went for the 620. Happy camper, too (after about a week).
The phone feels nice and heavy, yet it's still compact. The included Nokia software is a nice bonus (works great), not bloatware as expected.
disclaimer: I never owned a high end phone like your SGS3, only the original Samsung Galaxy, LG P500 Optimus One, and the Xperia Mini Pro.
620 better

Definitely Lumia 620 is better than HTC 8S. For starters, the Lumia has 4GB greater internal storage facility. Moreover, it has the Nokia exclusive navigation and camera apps which are not available to the HTC device. The build quality might be better on the HTC (as usual) but you cannot say that Nokia's build quality is faulty or bad. Nokia is reputed for its excellently built devices and the Lumia 620 is no exception. My suggestion is, just go to a store and check out both handsets for real. I am sure you'll pick the Lumia.
nokia FTW
go with nokia!
HTC phones have no quality no more!
see my 8S in attached pic. it got broken in the first 2 days.
it was a simple drop! and then HTC asked me to pay around $260 to replace the screen!

Planning to buy this device. Thoughts will be appreciated.

Hello fello xda users.
I'm in this forum since i've bought xperia u. Now i'm thinking of buying xperia zr. Why? It is old, right? Then why?
I'm buying this device because it is low budget with great specifications phone. But before going further, I want to know what's the actual deal with this phone. Is it really worth buying? How is the 8GB rom memory divided into? In xperia u it is 8GB with no memory card slot. 4GB internal sd card, 2GB for installing apps and hidden 2GB for system. Is it the exact way of division in this phone also? Give me your thoughts please.
Other options are also appreciated.
Well I won't and can't tell should you buy this phone. What I can tell you is that it has battery that can be changed and trust me it can be great plus. Also it's specification is of a very good and powerfull phone, and it is story for it self.
From those 8 gb I had 4.59 free to use as I like. Also you have SD slot for 32 Gb card, honestly I have seen somewhere that someone is using 64 Gb card (I can't confirm this so better don't do it)...so with no apps to sd, without rooting your phone, it is enough for normal use, but for serious gaming it is not enough. Now I would recomend PS4, Xbox One or PC for gaming but that is me (no offence). If you root your phone other possibilities open to you.
Also word of advice-be very carefull with sim card slot as it is very easy to brake as it is like tray. Also buy screen protector right away as ASF(anti shater film) can be scratched by looking at it:cyclops: Really buy it as fast as you can.
Few days ago I had over 25k in antutu benchmark with stock 4.4.4 Xperia ZR and people here tell me that with root and "better" kernel and rom I could get over 30k. Those are very good results...as I understand
Camera is 13.1 Mpx and it is really good. My opinion is that if you need better you can buy digital photoaparat and use that
It's price is also something to think about but shouldn't be crucial moment in choosing as there is other phones in this price range with specification lile Xperia ZR.
So my opinion very good phone that has few things I wanted so I picked it.
Anyway I hope I helped and good luck in your choice.
phone is good but lack some features of its elder sibling Z and ZL. it should have been given 16GB of internal memory like other two.
Also front camera is very poor quality VGA whereas Z has 2.2 MP.
Z and ZL have almost identical features except one is so called "waterproof" and dust proof and one is not.
The only negative that I have seen with ZL is its camera performance is below average though lenses are same on all three. dont know why
I agree with the first reply, the most important benefit of this phone is replaceable battery.
As this phone is over 2 years old, most buy it now because of custom rom possibilities, and be able to easily reverse is valuable for beginners of flashing.

I also bought this phone just a few months back due to it being cheap. There is about 4.6GB available for use for the 8gb rom.
The problem is without root you cannot put apps on the sd-card so that might be an issue if you plan on having a lot of apps and heavy games.
This phone is great, just that issue, the front camera ain't great but it's fine for me. Battery life is okay but can be greatly improved with root. Otherwise this phone is really good.
and, it MIGHT be able to upgrade to 5.0!,
I wish Sony had given 16GB internal memory to ZR also and at least 2MP front cam

Any news on Oreo Global Release for Huawei P9?

Currently on C675B332. EMUI 5.0.3. July 2018 security patch. I am thinking it was a bad decision to buy this phone in India in 2017. The GPU is really garbage, struggles to run PUBG and phone gets way to hot. That Rs. 14999($230) price on Flipkart really sold me.
You came here to cry or what?
P9 was not powerhouse device in day of its premiere, everyone with brain knew that. If that was "bad decision" why do you buy it in the first place and why you didnt sold it after few weeks? And you just now bother us with your crying that its was "bad decision"...
P9 was camera-centric device not gaming device, and as I said at the premiere it was known for not having powerful GPU/CPU but it was and STILL IS, good working device for everyday usage. You literally crying now that 2 years old device that was focused on camera, cant run smooth new games... Get a life for god sake...
Its literally like crying that you bought office computer and two years later you complain that it cant run new Doom in 4k.... The hell wrong is with you? -_-
Hmmm pubg works perfectly for me. Just get 2nd party app for tuning the graphics (nonroot) there are plenty of them. I personally use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.tsoml.graphicssettings (I run lowest 60fps settings) . And about Oreo, if you really want to get Oreo: https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/rebrand-update-tool-hwota7-p9-eva-t3820849

Not crying man. I was just a fan of this phone when it came out. I bought it after saving up and was intrigued by the discount ,however I was disappointed after the initial love affair. The phone got way too hot often thermal throttled. Checked the web and found that Huawei P9 thermal throttling was well documented, should've looked up before buying.
One more thing is that I was not that impressed with the camera with so much oversharpening and comparatively poor low light performance,Video performance was garbage. I mean this came out the same time as the S7 which blows it out of the water in every department. Audio got low too. Then I was devastated to see that Honor 9 lite with Kirin 659 and Mali-T830MP2 GPU ran Pubg way better than my phone at the same time getting less warm. It was difficult for me to sell this phone because here in India most people want dual sim phones and mine was Single sim. Anyways, all that aside bottomline is it was a big mistake and the good news for me is I finally sold it off couple of days ago for Rs.8500($125) and bought the Asus Zenfone Max pro m1 for Rs.10500 with AOSP Android 8.1,snapdragon 636 ,3gb RAM and 32Gb ROM. It has great speaker audio and a 5000mah battery giving me 7hrs SOT with very heavy usage. Triple slot too,so that I can put two SIMs both slots supporting 4G Volte and third slot for a 64GB SD card! Enabled Camera2api and now using Google camera!! The struggle is over ??
should've looked up before buying.

So you basically came here to cry that you cant even buy phone...
Before I bought P9 I spend week with S7 and LG G5. Because this is how you should buy phones, most of shops in normal civilized country give you such possibility to test device. I choose P9 instead of S7 because in everyday usage it blown S7 to the ground.
You had problem with your P9? You should find it out after few days, now after two years after its premiere you came and complain that your SPECIFIC device dont run smooth where others do... Its hard to describe it without using some harsh words...

Alright chill, I know you love the phone that you don't see the flaws ? I used the phone for 9 months, now finally got rid of it. Don't even compare it with S7 , camera,CPU GPU,battery life everything is inferior in the P9. I am complaining because I bought the phone based on reviews and turned out to be trash and I can say my thoughts. Moreover S7 got official OREO long time back.

There is a dedicated thread about (active since Aug 2018), please carefully read OP posts there
https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/rebrand-update-tool-hwota7-p9-eva-t3820849
You will need to:
- Unlock Bootloader (use search in that thread to find where can you buy the code to unlock Bootloader if you didn't obtain code for your phone while Huawei was providing it for free)
- Use HWOTA7 method to rebrand your L09/L19 to AL10c00 (OP instructions)
- Flash the Network patch to get the Mobile Network fully working again (without, on your L19 only one SIM card will work after rebranding)
- Don't worry, everything else (languages, Playstore and Google apps, etc) fully works upon rebranding to the Chinese Oreo AL10c00 (only VoLTE does not work - if you do have VoLTE service with your Mobile provider), and that Network patch removes Chinese bloatware
- Optionally flash TWRP, Face Unlock add-on, optionally root by Magisk (instructions, tools and utilities in the OP posts)
- Optionally flash custom ECO kernel to optimize performances/battery consumption:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/kernel-ecokernel-starter-v0-1-t3857029
- Optionally go for custom Treble Oreo ROMs: OmniROM, Resurrection Remix, LineageOS by Open Kirin team (you can even flash their OmniROM based on Android Pie):

Not sure if I should get Nokia or Xiaomi

Hi all,
I've been looking to get a device on the Android One program and after a lot of reading and reviews I need to decide between Nokia 7 Plus and Xiaomi A2.
I have a few question for Nokia 7 Plus owners:
1. I see that on other devices, in order to use gcam mod, camera2api needs to be enabled and that requires bootloader unlock and root. How is on Nokia?
2. How does the device feel in hand? Is it slippery? Easy to use hold in one hand?
3. How are updates on Nokia devices? I see that they are pretty quick in updating. Are the updates stable?
4. Are there any software/hardware problems related to this model? I see some users complaining about auto-brightness, sound problems, freezing, restarts...
Basically Xiaomi A2 is a considerably cheaper, uses the same hardware, cameras I think are comparable. So should I take the Nokia or not? I am not interested in nfc, sdcard, headphones jack.
Thank you for your time.

1) You don't need to root or unlock bootloader inorder to use Gcam in Nokia 7+. Because Camera2 API is already enabled. Simply install Gcam and enjoy.
2) Its fantastic. Not that slippery. Using it without any case. (But surely need one for protection). One hand use is ok. After few days we can easily use with onehand ( Tobe honest In-hand feel is better in A2)
3). Yes. Updates are stable and faster . Not like Xiaomi Android One Program.
4) Only older batch. Nothing in new.
I suggest u to take Nokia 7+. Because i am an old user of Mi A1 and totally disappointed with the update..
Only downside of Nokia 7+ is development. May be in future it will change. But now development sucks.. If u really need development like custom kernels or roms and blah blah then Nokia 7+ is not for you.

1. A lot of phones are moving towards locked bootloaders now using security as an excuse. I used to root all my phones but Android has developed so far now that I find I no longer need to.
2. Phones feels ok for me.
3. Well. I had a 6.1 which was stuck on May update and Nokia Care blamed carriers etc etc etc. So I upgraded to a 7 Plus and now I cant get updates because I tried out the Pie preview. I get the feeling HMD have nobody who fully understands updates. They keep telling you to be patient.
4. I have found no problems with this phone or the 6.1
There you go. The Nokia phones are ok when they work. When they dont you will struggle to get hold of someone in customer service who know what they are doing.
Thank you all, I really appreciate your feedback. Given all the info read, here I can list the pros and cons based on what I need
A2
+ good feel in hand
+ about 25% cheaper in my country
+ notification led
- that camera bump looks like it's annoying if using it on desk
- no way to use gcam without root and bootloader unlock, which is something I don't want to do.
- no double tap to wake
+/- the software remains to be seen... A1 wasn't really great in that department
7Plus
+ double tape to wake
+ better screen quality
+ stable software with quick updates
+ google camera works without root
- like 25% more expensive
- not sure the looks in live preview with the copper accent.
- finger print scanner seems a bit too high
- no notification led and glance uses battery since it has LCD
- bulkier and heavier
Interesting on the camera between the two. Both cameras seem ok. Some say that on nokia is a bit better, probably with gcam even better.
Looks like nokia has more advantages but I agree it's a bit too pricier.
Thank you again for your thoughts and time.
I haveonly ONE problem withNokia (7plus) => Bootloader is NOT unlockable (not officialy, and neoficialy/payed method as o read, stop working with August updates)
I really miss TWRP and ROOT, andalso notgwowing devcomunity...
2. feel in hand is excelent, also i use transparent case in box (maybe not in all country/distribution?) which is too excelent
3. updates is for me super stable and rolling (for me) via OTA in day of release (in some country(GB?) with some SIM is problematic, see some thread here), now i have ~3month P beta and useis as stable dailydriver too...
4. i don't see any sw/hw problem on me device, i see some on xda have problem, but maybe.. i have disabled animation and use NovaLauncher(no lags), i have disabled auto brightness(always on all phones), not have problem with sound (only in P BETA us problemaric record/play video sound), nothing restart or freezing...
Xiaomi Mi A2 has no sdcard slot. That's a nogo for me.
Best is Nokia 7 plus, You can get discount on Paytm and get the device around 20k.
Both enrolled to android one program, that guarantees SW update for 2 years so all functionality will be same.
- though they shares almost same processor even Nokia performs better and managed to score more on ANTUTU.
- Nokia has beaten A2 on Camera pic quality, MI's 20 mp is not able tot beat Nokia 7 plus.
- Hardware and build can not be compared Nokia feels premium and solid than MI while MI A2 feels cheap infront of Nokia.
- MI do not have head phone jack.
- MI has less battery but still taking same charging time as Nokia.

Buddy. No need to think twice. Simply take Nokia 7+. I am an happy user of 7+ ( Old unhappy user of A1 too).
I have used both Nokia and mi. Nokia is higher price range, which was my concern earlier. However, after i started using it i realised the small things that make up the cost. The camera especially in dark is excellent. Mi pictures are grainy whereas Nokia are amazing.
I would recommend Nokia 7 over mi if you don't mind spending more.
Thank you all for your valuable feedback.
The price of 7 Plus is around the same for a used Pixel 2. I'll keep an eye on the market to see if I can get one for a good value/price. Or maybe wait another month and a half for pixel 3 release, as probably prices for pixel 2 will drop.
Thank you again for your time.

Not sure where you are from but I don't think you need to unlock a P20 Pro to accept any sim card, at least not the C432 European Version. They work with any provider sim card. What do you mean with your question about USB SD card readers? Of course you can connect a sd card reader via USB C to the phone and also to your mac. I do my backups on an usb C card reader. Also, the phone works nicely with the mac, all my photos get synched to the photos app. I use Android File Transfer for mac to browse the phone. Much easier and more control over your files than with an iPhone.
Most bloatware apps can be uninstalled right on the phone or via adb. And the Android 9 is coming quite soon.

Hey mate. EE will provide you with a sim unlock code after 6 months of contract. Don't bother looking elsewhere for a code as it will, more likely, not work before then.
Regarding the bloatware try not uninstall system apps, apart from that you should be able to use huawei multi tool from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/development/tool-huawei-multi-tool-team-mt-t3523923.
Update to Android pie will take a while or maybe longer.
