IIRC, black uses little to no power on the SAMOLED display.
Knowing that the screen is the largest power hog, I'm curious if anyone could explain why switching to a mostly, or all black wallpaper (on an already black theme/ROM) does not have any appreciable effect on battery life/usage?

In an ideal scenario, the system should not be rendering those pixels and so save power.
I do understand people saying most of the time they use a black wallpaper. But, practically, how many people are on their home screen and for how long? Most of the time we are all using one app or the other. There may be widgets, etc at home screen, but don't think we spend that long staring at it. Personally I don't think I spend even 5-10% of my display time on home screen. So even if I had a black wallpaper, its hardly any battery saver.
1 hour screen on takes ~20% of my battery. So 3 hours of display ~60% of battery. Assuming 10% of this time I am on home screen with black background. That would less than 6% of my battery.
Further take off the power used for displaying home screen elements, widgets, etc, etc at say 50%. This would bring it down further to 3%. Is it worth saving this 3% battery when we could some nice pleasing wallpaper?
Reducing display brightness tends to help though since lowered brightness means lowered power needed to power up the screen.
All this is based on my understanding of the system.
Edit: U cud try applying dark color schemes to apps that support them, like say k9 mail, root explorer etc. This cud help while u r in that app.
I put quote tags around the word color for specific emphasis on black not being a color lol
I use Serendipity 5.12 w/REDROM- almost everything is already black. I decided recently to see if adding a black wallpaper would help the craptastic battery life- since fidgeting w/kernels and modems did nothing noticeable to help (some combos made it worse, yeah).
Again the post is just out of pure curiosity.

I noticed the same power consumption also on my Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100), and I find it really unbearable, since it means that there is absolutely no way I can get more than 4 hours of continuous use without running the battery flat.
Displays, no matter what, should not drain so much power!
Looking so pretty comes at a price, it would seem.
To an artist with a clean canvas, black is a color and white is not. To a photographer, the opposite is true. It all depends on who you ask.
I couldn't find anything on this and was wondering if its possible. I know it will shorten battery life a lot but I would still like it if the display could always be on.
I think the screen will burn in, same as on the note 3

Sideloading the app above might work but I would not expected to say on more than a few hours due to battery life. It is not designed to stay on all the time. Change the screen time out to five minutes and set the wake up Motion and that will help.

It's a amoled screen, so black pixels are actually off, right ?
If i use a custom and ultra minimalist clock (2 pixels white on black font, one for hour, one for min) it will use a significant amount of battery if i keep it on ?
I know most of the drain comes from the screen but I wonder if the intensity is at 1 and you have a black background white text how long the gear would last.
At 4 my gear I charge every two days and even then there is a lot of life in the battery.

while black pixels are indeed off, i believe just waking up the gear itself will consume more battery, just because it stays 'ready' the whole time.
I thought it would be nice if the watch face was visible all the time but didn't think about burn in. It's probably for the best to leave it as is. Thanks for all the replies.

I was wondering why the statusbar turns orange when in battery saver mode?
With all the benefits from this awesome amoled screen it would just make more sense to turn them black instead?
As this measure is actually killing battery instead...right?
So is there a mod to flash which does it by any chance?

I haven't seen an official explanation from Google, but the consensus of the interwebs seems to be you really want an end user to know the phone is operating in a different mode than normal. This would maybe minimize the amount of people complaining their phone is slow, choppy or not receiving notifications when they actually turned on battery saver mode one day and forgot about it. It would also maybe cut down on the amount of people that would run their phone completely out of juice, which can cause complications actually getting the device back on and charged. My janky Nexus 7 (2012) absolutely hates full discharge. The only way to even get it to charge again is a multi-step process of plugging it into a computer, waiting, unplugging, replugging, holding buttons, etc. (that is straight from a Google Nexus help page). Using orange would use more juice than black, but I would imagine it is marginal at best. Not sure of a mod to change it, but I'm sure there will be on custom ROMs, Xposed (when it supports ART/5.0).
If and when custom ROMs come out for the X there is a feature they could add which allows you to change it to any color you want. I'm guessing that if you edit something in the systemUI you could manually change it. On my Nexus I have it set to black because I don't like he Orange and I haven't noticed any improvement in battery life using black over the orange one when it cones on at 5% battery. On my Nexus 9 it didn't matter because it had a IPS LCD not a AMOLED then again its only a few pixels being illuminated and technically does use power but it's marginal at best.

How many of you use it regularly? And those that do, what is your preferred setting - Always on (+/- scheduled) or Tap to Show for 10 seconds? What has been your experience with battery life and overall usability? Any tips or tricks? Any downsides?

FIngerprint reader always on (so I can go directly from AOD to Homescreen without having to go through the lockscreen)
Fingerprint icon set to tap-to-show (just as a hint if i ever miss hitting the correct position when trying to unlock)

I only use AOD via AODNotify...that should have been an option in the poll.
I use a Tasker profile to turn AOD on (always) when a message arrives and revert back to tap to show when message is cleared.
I keep it on all the time, really helpful and doesn't seem to drain too much battery.
Btw does anyone know if it's possible to add weather info to the S21Us AOD?

I use to always have it active on my 10+ but it got to be annoying. Tap on is fine.
I don't care to be informed every bloody second... that ain't no way to live.

I like to keep the setting to always on with fingerprint always enabled showing thumbprint on screen always .
What i have noticed is the aod doesnt turn off when the phone is in pocket or lying upside down.
That would save so much battery.
AOD used to turn off automatically in my s9plus when the phone was in pocket .
May be this feature is disabled due to lack of active proximity sensor

The 10+ has a proximity sensor and AOD always remains on if set to. The face down off be nice.
Maybe it caused issues in the past. Samsung is sort of hit or miss though.
I have yet to use the fingerprint sensor, lol don't even know if it works.
Last thing I want is to get locked out of a device.
As soon as you set an access password this can happen and through no fault of your own. A hardware failure or glitch can trigger it. Had no password been set the setting wouldn't be enforced. I've gotten locked out of a PC bios like that, never again.

Does the fingerprint icon shift around like the clock or battery percentage (it has very little room to move around though)?
I hope it does, otherwise it'll land up causing screen burn if it's in the same position with the same pattern all the time. Have you noticed this?

Probably shifts it over a few pixels but in bright light over time it will cause uneven aging.

I set that sucker to always on all the time and at max brightness to boot. Cannot use a phone without the option.

According to your battery stats, how much drain is attributed to the AOD? Could you post a screenshot at the end of a day please?
I don't know how much drain is attributed to the AOD. As soon as I get the newest Samsung I turn it in and crank it up before I literally do anything else. I keep every setting on ALL the time (Bluetooth, wifi, nfc, etc). The battery gets me through a regular day. I'll try and post a screen shot. Today I took it off the charger 3 hours ago and I haven't stopped using the phone. I'm sitting at 85%.

I have a serious addiction to smart phones, lol. I'm on mine about 12 hours a day. Mostly playing games or surfing the net. Today off my charger for 2.5 hours and I'm at 88% lol.

Cycle the battery between 35-65% if you can (and then raise both those numbers slowly over time) or else you will fry your battery fast.
If you're just going to buy a new phone in 2 years, then, don't bother with what I said.

I've always used phones with a notification led so things were pretty simple. This one doesn't have a led and while the colored screen edges were ok with MIUI, I'm using crDroid and I can't replicate the same behaviour (I've turned on that option on ambient display settings but nothing lights up after a notification pop). I've tried the app "aod notification light for pixel" from the google play store and it works alright but the battery drainage is crazy (overnight it drained pretty much half my battery), being responsible for 20% usage of a full charge.
What workaround have you found? Do you just live without any notification alert?
Notification alerts are overrated. Back then we had a nice rgb small led, now mostly gone. Try pick up gesture on ambient light. Or turn on edge lighting, crdroid should have it.
I use True Edge from playstore, it's free, tons of customizations. To change the pattern, i had to watch a advertisment only once, so not much problems with it.

Not even in the app list on batt usage.
Because the actual battery drain is under "Display"
(But I don't expect it to be high, with conservative settings anyway.)
I hate it that they removed the LED from newer phones, lighting up the display for mere notifications seems so out of place. Thanks for the advice, I'll look around some options and report back if I find something interesting.
@diogofd8 Then again with AMOLED displays, showing a small notification on display is pretty much equivalent to using a dedicated LED as far as battery drain goes.
I vaguely remember there used to be an app to pretty much simulate a notification LED when AMOLED displays were first introduced on Android by literally just showing a couple of pixels in various color, but can't remember how it was called and no idea if it even exists still.

Looks really nice and with network access blocked in the settings there's really no chance of ads being shown and data collection problem with Google Analytics is solved too.
The only real downside is that the app isn't open source and uses Google Libraries.
