What are the first five apps you install on macOS? - macOS

If you have been a Mac user for a long time, there surely are a few apps that you cannot live without. These are the apps that you would install as soon as you get a new Mac and would probably recommend old as well as new Mac users to try too! macOS does come with a bunch of pre-loaded apps to get you started, but apart from those, here are five macOS apps that I personally install as soon as I get a new Mac to add more features as well as increase productivity.
1. Magnet

Ask any macOS user and Magnet is most certainly a part of their top 5 favorite apps list! It's a simple utility that allows you to resize and snap windows (heh) on macOS to different parts of your screen. macOS does include a split-screen view by default but who is two windows enough for, right? You can assign keyboard shortcuts that let you snap app instances to different parts of your screen and it's a great way to organize all your open apps on macOS. If you multi-task often, this is a must-have.
Download Magnet
2. Amphetamine
There are multiple use-cases for Amphetamine but the best one is if you use an external monitor with your MacBook. Essentially, Amphetamine is an app that keeps your Mac awake for whatever duration you want it to. I use my MacBook Pro with an external monitor so when I connect it via HDMI, closing the lid of my MacBook automatically sends it to sleep and I don't have a feed on my monitor. I want my MacBook's display turned off (since I use just my monitor and it will drain the battery needlessly) and this is where Amphetamine comes in. I can set up a profile where my MacBook stays awake even when the lid is closed but the screen gets turned off. This way, I can use it with a monitor since it's not on standby. You can also use it for things like keeping your Mac awake when downloading big files.
Download Amphetamine
3. The Unarchiver
As the name may suggest, The Unarchiver is an app used to unzip files on macOS that may not be supported by the default unarchiving tool. While macOS has a built-in tool to unarchive zip files, other extensions like RAR, 7z, LHA, ZIPX, BIN, GZ, TGZ, etc. are not supported and hence, this app comes in handy when you want to open such files.
Download The Unarchiver
4. AppCleaner
Uninstalling an app on macOS is a straightforward process. However, oftentimes, an uninstalled app can leave its residual files behind which occupy space on your Mac. If you don't know where to locate these files after uninstalling an app, they will continue to stay on your Mac, and the more the number of apps, the larger is the amount of storage that's going to be occupied. This is where a simple but very useful app, AppCleaner comes in. All you have to do is drag and drop the app you want to uninstall into AppCleaner and it will do the rest for you. Highly recommended.
Download AppClaner
5. HyperDock
If you've used a Windows computer, you would be aware that hovering your mouse cursor over any open apps in your taskbar will display a small preview of the windows that are open. This is handy when you have multiple apps open or multiple instances of the same that are open and want to quickly switch to the right instance. Unfortunately, this isn't present on macOS by default. HyperDock fixes it by adding previews to the Dock whenever you hover your cursor over an open app. If you switch between multiple instances of an app, this is a no-brainer.
Download HyperDock
These were the five apps that are among the first few that I personally install after getting a new Mac. Of course, there are the usual set of apps that are also vital to me like Chrome which is my preferred browser of choice, Microsoft's Office Suite, Slack, WhatsApp, Final Cut Pro, etc. but I didn't mention them since most people are already aware of such apps.
Which of these apps did you install and benefit from? What are the first five apps you install on macOS? Let us know, we would love to try them out too!

Only two you mention I use are AppCleaner and The Unarchiver. The other high priority apps I use are:
1) Little Snitch (+ Micro Snitch)
2) Transmission
3) Firefox (I absolutely hate Safari)
4) iStat Menus
5) Homebrew (via Terminal)

Slack, Telegram, Chrome, Adobe CC

[APP] NewsSpot Google Reader -[R]- 2011-10-30 -[U]- 2012-01-02 -[V]- 2.10

Name: NewsSpot
Sync your articles as quick as a wink, store text and images for offline reading and search your articles in a gorgeous metro style way.
This is NewsSpot, a full-featured Google Reader client for Windows Phone: Its advanced sync-engine delivers a two-way sync for your unread and starred articles, which only syncs what needs to be synced. Already stored hundreds of starred articles? NewsSpot will download them once and never again. It caches articles as well as images for later offline reading.
Ever wanted to search your starred articles? Ever been interested in a specific topic of your reading-list? No problem with NewsSpot. Just tap the search button and enter your keywords, it will instantly filter your current list to what you've searched.
Together with Windows Phone Mango, NewsSpot now offers live tiles and toast notifications. For example, you can pin secondary live tiles to your start screen showing the count of your folders. Of course, live tiles can be updated per background task.
Other features include:
- Bookmark your article in Instapaper or ReadItLater or send a link per Email
- Mango only: share your article via Twitter, Facebook, Windows Live etc.
- Mango only: benefit from compressed web communication and save up to 80% of your data plan
- Open YouTube or Marketplace links from within the application
- Read articles in full or mobilized view, supported by Google or Instapaper
I've just released v2.0 of the app, which takes advantage of a lot of Mango features. Here is a list of things that are new in v2.0:
- Compatible with Windows Phone Mango
- Share article via builtin phone services
- Application live tile can show unread, starred and shared count
- Secondary live tiles with folder count
- Background task with toast notification and update of tiles
- Adjusted trial limits, added advertising
- Added support for gzipped communication
- Further improved sync speed
- Uses system progress indicator
- Added what's new to about page
- Added flip animation to folder tiles
- Changed icons so that they stick to the system theme
- Lots of minor changes and bug fixes
There is an add-supported version which has all features with the sole restriction that it lets you sync at a max 200 unread and 50 starred articles. The full version supports up to 1000 unread or starred articles.
NewsSpot is a matter of the heart to me and I'm constantly trying to improve it. So if you find a bug, have a suggestion or any other feedback, don't hesitate to write here or contact me per pm or twitter (@fourspotproject).

Nice Work
Only got to try a few feed items with it so far, but I like what I'm seeing. Nice settings menu, very fast. I just wish it had the option to download read articles for a certain period of days (I frequently have to reference read articles within a day, but not so much after say, three), and a higher class icon to match up to the slickness inside the app and I'd say there's a new Google Reader app in my life.
---------- Post added at 09:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:00 PM ----------
Ooh, one more thought. It might be nice to have an option to go ahead and automatically resync to the server after tapping to mark all as read, that way if I switch back to a desktop it already knows what I've seen.
@zedmartinez
Thank you very much for your suggestions.
Syncing and keeping read items: this is already on my list, though I think it will not make it to the next or after next version. Maybe I should re-schedule things
Application icon: Yeah, grafics are not my strength. I'll figure out something for that
Automatic sync: this one also is on my list. I think automatic sync after tapping mark all as read can be done quickly. What do you think of automatic sync after a certain amount of time (like 5 minutes or so). I think this would especially make sense in combination with a sort from oldest to newest. Then you can read articles from top and the new ones are automatically appended at the bottom.
Those sync options could work. I'm trying to think how Wonder Reader does it (currently my workhorse feed reader), I think it syncs everytime I go back to the all feeds list, or after marking all as read. I like the idea of the timeline-based syncing though, that's a neat idea.
Sorry to gripe about the logo I'm a graphics designer by trade, so, fussing over icons is sadly engrained in me. If you have too many problems or just would like the help, let me know what the parameters for tiles are and I'd gladly lend you some gratis help.
I keep being really pleased with the speed as I play with this. Excited for future updates, and you can expect a formal purchase as soon as I get paid this week.
So, just checked again: Wonder Reader has some kind of direct sync model, meaning the status of articles is synced as soon as you tap on it.
I'm pretty sure this could be done in NewsSpot, too, though these actions have to be tolerant to network failures. Added to my checklist.
Regarding the offer to help with the icon: You'll get a PM soon
Oh, I totally forgot to meantion that v2.1 is out since 11-10.
It was done in haste since Google changed the interface of its Reader, removing all social elements like sharing and replacing them with Google+.
I'm quite optimistic that the next update will add features instead of stripping them
Just downloaded to try out. If I like it, I'll be sure to buy it and rate it.

Ok. I've been playing with this a bit and seeing what it will/won't do. I like it.
I've noticed that it doesn't run in the background well, as in play well with multitasking.
Pretty much, I can open it up and read an article. Were I to press the home button or press an alert to answer an SMS, I can see NewsSpot in the open tasks list from the long press of the back button, but it attempts to resume then closes out back to either my home screen or another application running.
Also, I can press the globe button to open the mobilized version and then press back to return to the article. If, however, I choose the option to Browse in Internet Explorer, I cannot return to NewsSpot. It will attempt to resume and then crash to the home screen. I imagine this is the same issue as when trying to select it from the multitasking screen.
BTW, I decided to support you and pay.
@ anseio,
Thank you for your valuable feedback and your purchase.
Regarding that multitasking issue: I've got a lot of crash logs lately and as far is I've analyzed them, many arise from the advertising control, especially when the app is tombstoned/resumed. Its a known bug I unfortunately overlooked during development.
So let me ask you a question: since you bought the app, the advertising control disappears. Did these errors you mentioned went away, too?
Thanks for the info. Yes, I compiled this feedback after i upgraded.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
@ anseio,
Sorry to bother you, but I didn't get your answer. Does 'I compiled this feedback after I upgraded' mean that the errors remain?
Yes, it means that it still doesn't hibernate.

It may have to do with the fact that I'm using the HTC hd2, not an official wp7 device.

Well, I'll check the logs. Maybe I can find something there. Did the app just crash or have you been asked to send a crash log? If not, you may also look into the settings. If there is a log not uploaded yet, you should have an additional entry called 'manage logs'.
Anyway, there are a couple of logs on my hd from Hd2 owners. Will check them this weekend.

I can't find anything in settings for managing logs. I wouldn't say that the software crashes. There's definitely no error. It's as if they close out in the middle of the "resuming" process.
For example. I'll open NewsSpot, go to an article, press home button, enter messaging and locate a message, long press "back" button, select NewsSpot... it will show "resuming", then go back to the messaging section within a few seconds. Another long press of the back button shows that there are no other apps in multitasking.
Just wanted to let you know that v2.2 was approved by Microsoft and should be online within a couple of hours.
Besides new artwork by zed martinez (thanks again ) you can now navigate from folders to your feeds. Furthermore read items can now be kept and synced.
@anseio:
I've found another couple of bugs related to tombstoning. Please tell me if the app now works better for you.
However, still I have no clue why the app crashes without a notification. The only reason I can think of is that the system runs out of RAM (and NewsSpot is actually rather demanding in terms of memory). Am I right that a HD2 has little less RAM than a HD7 (448 vs. 576MB)?

FilePush lets you transfer files to your Android device with only two clicks. With the Windows Client you can create context menu entries that appear when you right-click a file inside Windows Explorer. With a click on the "Push file to device" entry the file will appear a few seconds later as a download on your device. It works much like Chrome2Phone just for files.
There is a paid version that costs $1.2 and a free trial that has all the features but lasts only for 14 days.
Paid $1.2
Free Trial
Windows Client (direct download)
Officially supported is Windows Vista, 7 and 8
WLAN transfer
It's faster but can obviously only be used if your PC is connected to the same Wireless Network as your Android device. A internet connection is still required on both the device and the PC as the transfer gets initiated by a Google Push message.
Google Drive Transfer
The file gets uploaded onto your Google Drive first and will then be downloaded onto the device. It's slower but should work anywhere with an internet connection.
Something that's probably a concern for a lot of people: Your Google password isn't stored anywhere, locally or on a server. It uses OAuth and you only have to login with your Google Account the first time you launch the Windows application.

There are a few differences. Once you have FilePush set up you don't have to do anything else than just click files and they are on your phone. It doesn't always have to run in the background because it uses push messages to initiate the file transfer. With Wifi Transfer Pro for example you have to launch the app on the phone, enable the small http server and type the IP (that could be different every time) inside the browser. This doesn't seem like a lot of work but if you just want to send one or two files at a random time of the day with FilePush you can just click it and don't have to worry about it anymore.

very smart program and easy to use interface... much easier than the other competitors eg zumocast.
suggestions for improvement (which will motivate me to buy): allow transfer from phone to computer too; allow transfer of folders; allow it to work via 3g.

1. Phone to Computer is an often suggested feature but technically hard to accomplish to make it user friendly, but I'm working on it
2. Transfer of folders is also something that I want to do but has some downsides as I would have to zip all the files and unzip them on the phone again
3. It already works over 3G if you use Google Drive to transfer the files
Btw. tonight I released a update for both the Android app and the windows client:
Android version 1.1.3:
» Added option to redownload a file
» Added Jelly Bean Notifications with Buttons
» Migrated to the new Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) Service
Windows version 1.0.0.5:
» Changes for the new Google Cloud Messaging Service
» Fixed a crash that could occur when using Google Drive
Cool

First off, thanks for getting the full version!
Did you login with the same Google account on the windows client as you registered your device with?
Did you press "Refresh" inside the preference window of the windows client? You can bring that screen up by right clicking the FilePush Icon within the taskbar and then clicking "Preferences".
Thanks!

My Library App

Hi,
As an owner of NGT I've decided to start programming in java and android API. Let me introduce my first project.
As I rooted my device I was missing Library launcher, ralaunch was fine but I was looking for shelves supporting launcher, epub launcher was nice but limited. So, I decided to fill the gap. I was inspired by nook library, which I think was very well designed.
For now it's in alpha stage and for easier developing it's as application, in future I'll make it as a launcher.
So, here are the screen-shots of actual developing state:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I'm using Calibre and its meta attributes:
<meta content="shelf name" name="calibre:series"/>
<meta content="1" name="calibre:series_index"/>
calibre:series_index is treated as integer, not as a float so if you have it as float, let me know.
Please let me know what you think about it. Let me know which features or ideas you wished to have in this app.
If anybody could contribute pictograms icons which will fit better, let me know.
---- uploaded first pre-alpha version of app ---
v0.1 - limitations:
scanning of ebooks is limited only to whole /sdcard/, no internal memory is scanned,
file browser don't remember locations, always start from root,
file browser don't have a bookmarks yet,
epub file's attribute "calibre:series" is treated as integer value, so 1.5 is 2, 1.4 is 1. Anybody uses fractions on this attribute?
sorting is done on re-run of app or on refreshing library, to be fixed,
for now, only epub filetype is handled,
searching doesn't work,
no preferences yet
v0.2
fixed adding of shelves
fixed scanning of whole /sdcard/
v0.3
added working bookmarks
added root access in manifest (in future will be used in "my file" browser to get access to blocked paths)
some general fixes
Let me know what you think about it.
Cheers

Yes yes yes! THIS IS GOOD!
I've uploaded first version of my app. Hope that'll work for you.
Nice app, thanx!

Looks great - thanks! For future versions, I'd love to be able to do a dual-sort starting with genre tag so you could show shelves by tag then by series (so you could just see your SciFi series for example) or tag then by author etc. Thanks for the good work.
Hi,
New version uploaded, more info in first post.
Due to some manifest changes in code which fail to run I must upload again to have it working
Cheers.
I'm extremely impressed, especially considering that you said you have just started programming. Very good start sir!:beer:

Thanks, I've learned C/++ for years, so learning Java was quite easy. The biggest problem was Android API, which is complex, especially API 7 which lacks many features.
Good work! I like the way this library app opens AlReader by default and allows the standard Nook library to open the stock reader by default. I have one feature request. As many of the third party readers will open .mobi files as well as .epub, can this library be modified to use both? My practice is to have my non-DRM books in .mobi format to open with AlReader so that they do not even show up in the stock library app which I use for B&N content only. I find this a effective way to separate the two different forms of content.

Hi, I plan to add mobi/pdf/epub only the question is how to handle this, altogether or separate in tabs.
Beside I'll add scan paths. So, for mobi we could set one dir and exclude it from scanning.

Actually, for my purposes, there is no need to separate .epub and .mobi. Your app will not be able to read B/N DRMed epubs anyway. For me, if it just picked up .mobi files when it does a library scan and displayed then alongside DRM free epubs, that would be fine.
Again, thanks for the great work on this.

I really like the app, but it can't seem to get it to work properly. I only get three or four shelves to start and I can set the view to all to see all my ebook files. This view shows all of the books but without an authors name, shows null null. Hitting the refresh button the app rescans the device and shows all the authors on the books. Switching the view to shelves does not carry over, hitting the refresh button does not change the shelves shown. Going throughout the option menu to delete data and then rescan does nothing as well. Any ideas? Can post the debug if needed
Also for future dev adding the file types cbr/Cbz for comic books would be awesome. Showing them inline with other shelves or on a separate tab would be cool
Hi
I was oo for a while. Could you PM me debug, I'll look for it. Strenge, as ebook should be readed all the time the same way.
sorry about the two seperate pms but the first is what it normally looks like and the second is when i rescan files in the all files view.
Feature request. Sync with google play books or any other service that have upload and page sync. I want to be able to upload books on my phone and sync over to nook.
Hi, I'll look how that could be achieved. I had a plan to make my own build of reader with sources and add reading with last page shown in library app.

This app is exactly what I have been looking for. However, I installed it on my NST and have similar issues as above. Also when I try to assign books to a shelf it will add some but not all that I have selected and will add some random books as well.
I hope the developer keeps working on this app.

First week with Windows

Hello
And happy new year to everyone!
This is my first week on Lumia 735 after being 6 years with Android.
I like very much it's desktop, but there are some simple things that I thought until now I would figure out but I cannot find a solution....
1. How can I download a PDF from an email and then attach it to another email?
2. Is there a way to have a shortcut on notification bar for data connection?
3. Is there a way to remove Bing and get Google as default engine?
4. Is there a way to tide up settings? I feel that are randomly scattered...
5. Is there a way to open a new tab in internet explorer, but open in background? Cause we are always transferred to the new tab.
Thanks!
I'm on the same phone since about 4-5 days, so I have not yet answers for you, but another question to add:
- why on some apps the keyboard doesn't turn in landscape mode when I flip the phone? I found it working on some apps only, but in Bing search (just an example) it remains in portrait
EDIT: a bit of googling partially answers to 3: I'm a newbie so I don't know if I can link external sites here, but it seems you can change the default search engine in Internet Explorer in the browser settings (so when you type words in the address bar, it uses Google instead of Bing). Regarding the phone search button, maybe the trick is not so easy...
1. did you see download in email message? click on that link to download file to your phone.
2. with latest WP OS 8.10.14219.341 you can add mobile data shortcut in action center
or use Quick Launch app from store
3. settings - applications - internet explorer, select advanced settings and change to google
4. no... latest updated is always at end of list...
5. not exactly... try UC Browser 8.1, maybe you like it better than IE
Download a app named File attacher,it can help you to attach any files into outlook client.

1) Download the file to your phone. You can then open it from the email (which will let you choose what PDF viewer to open it with, if you have more than one installed; some of them directly support sharing) or you can then switch to a file manager app (Files, Pocket File Manager, Aerize Explorer, etc.), go to the Downloads directory, and share the file from there. When "sharing" the file, one option will be to use email; this will attach the file to the email. This approach also works for other file types, by the way.
2) As dxdy says, you need to be on a new OS version (you may need to be using the "Preview for Developers" app) to get the ability to add mobile data specifically to the Action Center (swipe-from-top notification area thing) but there are lots of other ways (tons of free apps, for example) to pin a link to it on your Start screen. You can also have both WiFi and Airplane Mode toggles on the Action Center, even in less-than-newest versions.
3) Not unless you're in Russia, I think? You may be able to change the IE default search engine using the method dxdy posted above, but if you want to change the search button behavior, that's trickier. I think in Russia (or possibly just tell your phone you are), if you have the Google app installed, it may run that... haven't tried, though.
4) Settings are, unfortunately, not directly orderable. The default order for Microsoft-provided settings is basically "what MS has found people use most often", thus things like visual and audio customization are at the top, WiFi is on the first page, and stuff like Backup requires scrolling down a bunch. There's also OEM customizations, which are technically just Store apps that are pre-installed and use the Settings hub instead of the normal app list; those are always listed underneath all the Microsoft settings, and (as dxdy says), the one that was most recently installed/updated is at the top of that section ('top of the bottom of the list' if you will).
5) Doesn't seem to be any such way in IE, but there's lots of other browsers. Most of them just wrap the IE rendering engine, so pages will look the same as on IE but the UI can be totally different. This includes changes to tab management. They won't sync with your other devices, at least not by default, though. There's also a beta of Opera for WP8; it still has some bugs but mostly works and has a very different UI from IE. Annoyingly, though, Microsoft doesn't allow any of those apps to be set as the default browser (you can't change the URI association for http:/https: for example).
@axxel84: It depends on whether the app supports landscape mode. That requires work from the developer, since they have to change the layout of everything, so a lot of apps don't support it. If the app doesn't support it, then it will be locked in one orientation no matter how you turn it, keyboard included. Some apps (mostly games) are also locked in landscape mode only, and don't support portrait.
Hi guys, thanks for the help but I am still finding difficult to compose with windows after coming from fully updated Android phones.
- pdf attachments, not possible. You can see that you download files but no where to be seen in order to attach them in another email! What????
- the option to change Bing to Google was in the past, but they don't have it on new phones. And this is the company that wants to increase market share? With these kind of acts I don't think they will last many years...
- I found a way to have a shortcut on desktop that takes me to settings and there to click on for data. But why don't they include this in notification option? How difficult is this?????
- the other frustrating thing I am feeling, is that most other times when resuming an app when I go out and then in, it starts the"resuming" screen and takes 5 seconds to load... For example viber, I can't chat instantly with someone, I have to leave the program on continuously to do this
- no led notification. I should have known earlier by reading reviews, but there is no led notification!!
- no major apps as official pinterest, dropbox, instagram, sms backup to gmail. My biggest disappointment is Dropbox... I am thinking of selling the phone now and going back to Android. Having two small twins, I take continuously videos and photos, and I don't want to think about backup. I found another application but doesn't sync videos automatically. And also the backup app of windows doesn't do automatically the job... If I was windows I would hire people to help these companies develop the "big" apps...
- notification center doesn't always work. for example when a new app is downloaded, nothing comes app on notification. Or in viber you might get 10 messages on notification, if you click one and then in viber you read all, they remain on notification
Nobody seems to have emailed me a PDF recently, but I can download them from the web and they show up in my Downloads folder (on my SD card, since that's where I told Storage Sense to put new downloads). From there, I can see it in Aerize Explorer, select it, Share it, and choose an email account; a new message is created with the file attached.
Some new phones have the option for Google search, but it's not in all regions.
As you have ALREADY been told, the option to toggle data service from the Action Center is available in the latest version. It's also largely un-needed; Data Sense and related settings should give you enough control over your data usage to make it fairly unimportant. Mind you, I agree that it should have been there from the start, but asking rhetorical questions isn't actually helpful.
The "Resuming..." screen can come up for two reasons (or a combo thereof):
1) Badly-coded app that does a bunch of stuff immediately on resume, before it lets you use the app.
2) Your phone ran low on RAM and removed the app from background execution ("tombstoned" it, sort of like hibernating a laptop), so it needs to be restored from the Flash storage and then resumed.
Lots of phones don't have notification LEDs. That's not a WP8 thing, that's a "if this feature is important to you then you ought to buy a phone with that feature" thing. My HTC has a notification LED, my Samsung did not. Both are/were WP8 devices.
Automatic backup of photos and videos is included in the OS, has been included since WP7 actually, but it goes to OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) instead of Dropbox. Microsoft software uses Microsoft services; this isn't really surprising.
SMS is automatically backed up as well, just not to Google. Why would Microsoft include a feature to back up your messages to a competitor's service?
Lack of official apps is somewhat annoying/disappointing, but you could have easily enough checked that before buying, and the apps will come in time. In the meanwhile, there's usually third-party versions of those apps.
App downloads are fast, and you know when you started them. Why would you need a notification for that? As for the thing with Viber, it's not the OS' fault that the app doesn't report when a message is read. Notifications are really easy to clear though, just swipe them to the right and all notifications for that app will clear (or hit the "clear all" button to get rid of all of them at once).

Mac FAQs: Your guide to common macOS terms

The popularity of Windows easily surpasses that of macOS because of its four-times-larger share in the PC market. Despite this differentiation, macOS still ranks as the second most used desktop operating system in the world owing to the lack of other popular options. Apple spares no chance to boast about the excellent and tasteful user experience offered by macOS — and users and fans echo it. At XDA however, we've focused more on Windows in the past and have only started attending to Mac recently. We recently published a Beginner's Guide to macOS for those switching from a Windows PC to a Mac. Next up is a glossary of terms that you can use to sound smart when talking about macOS.
In this article, we'll tell you about some of the most common terms relevant to macOS that every macOS user must know.
Glossary of standard macOS termsiCloudApple's online cloud storage service is called iCloud and is linked to your Apple ID used to sign into your Apple devices. It automatically backs up your files stored in the Desktop and Documents folder. You get 5GB of free iCloud storage with each Apple ID, but you can also buy iCloud storage for a monthly payment if you need more.
In addition to cloud storage, you get features such as:
Find My that can be used to track the geographical location of all your Apple devices as long as they're connected to the internet.
Continuity, which synchronizes tasks on different Apple devices.
A universal clipboard.
At WWDC 2021, Apple announced iCloud+, which extends the utility of iCloud by adding features such as a VPN and unlimited storage for footage from Homekit-compatible security cameras.

Desktop folder in Finder[/caption]
Finder in macOS is where you'll find all your files, similar to File Explorer on Windows. Besides saving files in folders such as Downloads, Documents, and Desktop, Finder also lets Mac users view the apps installed on their computers in the Applications folder.
Dock
The Dock is a floating row of apps traditionally placed at the bottom of the display. It can also be placed at the bottom, left, or right side of your Mac's screen based on your preference. Since macOS lacks a Taskbar, apps minimize into the Dock.
System Preferences
System Preferences is the settings hub for everything on macOS. It's denoted by the gear icon on the Dock.
Control Center[caption id="attachment_447877" align="aligncenter" width="487"]
Control Center on macOS[/caption]
Control Center, added to macOS with Big Sur, is an assortment of quick settings for essential features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirDrop, and display and keyboard brightness on MacBooks. The Control Center is inspired by the feature on iOS and iPadOS and can be accessed by clicking on the icon to the left of the date and time on the Menu bar.
Spotlight Search[caption id="attachment_447835" align="aligncenter" width="900"]
Spotlight Search on macOS[/caption]
Spotlight is a system-wide Search feature on macOS. It can be used to search files and folders, apps, and sub-menus in Preferences. Besides documents or apps stored on the Mac, Spotlight can also be used to preview web results based on the suggestions from your default web browser.
You can launch Spotlight search by pressing Command + Space on the keyboard.
Launchpad[caption id="attachment_447881" align="aligncenter" width="900"]
Launchpad on macOS[/caption]
Launchpad is like an app drawer where you find all of the applications installed on your Mac. You can open Launchpad either by clicking on its icon (
) in the Dock or by pinching inwards on the trackpad with three fingers and a thumb.
Mission Control
Mission Control is a powerful multitasking tool on macOS. It can be used to reveal all active apps on each desktop so you can switch between those apps seamlessly. It can also be used to arrange different maximized apps on different desktops.
You can also use Mission Control to merge two apps into a single desktop so you can use them side-by-side. To learn why you would want to do that, we have a good explainer on Why & How to Split your Screen on a Mac.
StacksStacks can be used to organize items on the desktop. Using Stacks, you can arrange similar files in a single heap of files that can be expanded when you click on them. It is like a folder, but one less click away. Files can be arranged in Stacks based on the kind of file, the date it was created, added, modified, or last opened, or based on tags attributed to the file.
ContinuityContinuity is a suite of features used by Apple to facilitate an easy transition between your Mac and your iPhone, iPad, or other Mac, provided they are connected to the same iCloud account and the same network. Using Continuity, you can:
receive messages or calls from your iPhone on your Mac.
use your iPhone's data connection as a personal hotspot if your Mac cannot recognize any other Wi-Fi network.
copy on your iPhone and paste on Mac — or vice-versa — using a universal Clipboard.
take photos or scan documents on your iPhone and view them on your Mac.
perform tasks like view webpages, draft emails, or mark up media on your iPhone or iPad, and continue on your Mac.
Photo Booth
If you've tried searching for "Camera" and couldn't find one on your MacBook, it's because Apple calls the app "Photo Booth" instead. You can use Photo Booth on your Mac to capture photos and videos. In addition, you can also try a myriad of comical and bizarre effects to make your pictures or videos enjoyable.
SidecarSidecar lets you use an iPad as the secondary screen for your Mac. It's beneficial for creators who use an Apple Pencil for taking notes, graphics designing, or creating illustrations on their iPad. With Sidecar, these tasks can be accomplished directly on a Mac using apps like Adobe Illustrator. You can also use Sidecar to add a touchscreen to your Mac or use a secondary screen for apps that don't need to stay on your primary desktop. To use Sidecar, your iPad needs to run at least iPadOS 13 or higher.
Here are the minimum system requirements for your Mac to run Sidecar. You need to have a new model (listed on the link) of Mac, or else the feature might not work.
With the next version of macOS, i.e. Monterey, Apple will also allow seamless drag-and-drop between a Mac and an iPad without turning it into a secondary display.
Time MachineAs the name suggests, Time Machine is a backup utility in macOS, and it allows you to create timely backups of your Mac. You can create an entire backup of your Mac, including all files and folders, installed applications, saved IDs, and even preferences. You can assign a disk for an automatic backup of your Mac or create one manually every time you want. If something goes wrong and your Mac starts malfunctioning, you can reinstall macOS and use the latest Time Machine to completely restore your Mac as if nothing happened.
The vital clue here is to take regular backups, and the next item in this list can help you manage that.
Disk UtilityDisk Utility is a tool used to manage internal and external disks connected to your Mac. You can check disks for errors, create partitions, or erase external disks and partitions using Disk Utility. We also have an explainer that answers What is Disk Utility on Mac and what can it do?
TerminalThe Terminal is an application that lets you control and troubleshoot your Mac using a command-line interface. Like the Command Prompt — or Terminal Preview — on Windows, it can manage files or run commands and scripts.
Activity Monitor
Activity Monitor lets you manage the activities running on your Mac and see the RAM, CPU power, storage, or network used by them. You can also terminate apps that are not responding and consuming too much of any of these resources listed above.
That's about it. If you can think of anything else that we didn't mention in our macOS glossary, let us know!
