New to Samsung - need help to backup to PC and Samsung Cloud - Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Questions & Answers

Hello,
I recently bought a S20 FE which is my first Samsung phone ever. I came from Huawei P20 Pro (and a Sony and Iphone before that) and i have a few questions, that i hope you guys can help me with:
How do i backup my Samsung phone to a PC?
Huawei has the "HiSuite" PC-software that connects to your phone and allow easy backup/restore functions for calls, text messages,
contacts, pictures etc.. Is there a similar software for Samsung?
Backup to Samsung Cloud: I don't have the option to activate automatic backups, i can only do it manually (nothing in the three-dot menu). Am I missing something?
Thank you in advance,
Dan

The tool provided for Samsung for backup and restore purposes is SmartSwitch, regarding the automatic backup I always had activated this option by default and had to do it the other way around to deactivate it. If you can provide some screenie or maybe you can enable it open your account via PC.

Thanks for your answers @SubwayChamp
I'll get SmartSwitch.
I've accessed Samsung Cloud from my PC and from my phone, but couldn't find any options to activate automatic backup there.
When i go to settings > Accounts and backup > Under"Samsung Cloud" : Backup data
Here i can choose what to backup and at the bottom there is a button to backup (manually). There is no option to enable automatic backups. The three dots menu only has "More info" but no options.
Edit:
I was looking in the wrong place. Followed the guide here, and i didn't look in the right place.
Had to look in Samsung Cloud settings, and there i found the "Auto back up" option. My bad.

Good, that´s what I thought.

Do Not use Smart Switch! It can fail you miserably. Cloud crap is unsuitable for large data bases and hogs bandwidth and battery.
Do a direct folder to folder cut & paste.
Verify it was a good copy.
Always backup the PC backup files to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other.
Do not clone or compress data to hdds as it can remove needed null marks!

Thanks for the warning @blackhawk.
I am a bit surprised that i would resort to use copy/paste on a fairly new phone from one of the biggest cell-phone manufacturers in the world.

You're welcome.
It's reliable and verifiable (always verify and test the copy). Recopied an unclean transfer don't attempt to "repair" it
Over the years I learned why to use only cut/paste the hard way. The only thing I will clone copy is an OS/loaded apks.
Data damage/lose is not acceptable.
I have about 1.5 tb of data... I don't screw around with it trying shortcuts.

At the moment, no. WP only saves your settings, app list, accounts and messages, and wolf released an app data backup solution (only for interop unlocked phones w/higher privileges enabled). However, WP8.1 should be bringing way more options for backups, including app data if I remember right.

Thanks for replying th0mas96.
That is what I thought.
Yeah, unlike WP7 there's either no way to make the update OS create a full Main OS backup (that we've found), or the update OS just doesn't have that feature anymore. It's certainly not automatic anymore (makes sense, with OTA updates, though it's still a problem)

I know MS has a program called OneDrive, which can easily allows users to back up their Windows phone data to computer or other place, it just like Apple iCloud. Check this tutorial out on how to back up and transfer Windows phone to iPhone.

+1 for OneDrive. But it only backs up a few items, such as contacts, music, video, etc...
Sadly there's no way to backup some settings, so all you can do is take screenshots (power + volume up) of settings and then manually re-set them to your liking.

Unlocking Bootloader - Want to save the phone as it is.

Hi all,
I am a total noob in these matters but from what I understand, in order to root my phone I need to unlock the bootloader. The problem I have is that I have used my phone for a few weeks now and have some very important data (app data) along with the way I set the layout of the phone etc. I was wondering, if there is any back up app that would allow me to literally copy everything from my phone i.e. the layout of apps, app data (very important), pics in different folders etc.
I know Titanium Backup would be ideal but from what I gather, my phone needs to be rooted before I can use that so it wouldn't make sense for me to use that. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been posted in the wrong area.
I think Helium can do that. (I am not sure). You just need to install an app on your computer and to enable USB debugging in developer's menu in settings.
To enable developer's menu :
Go to about phone in settings, press 7 times on "build number" and you will see the developer's menu in the settings.
For contacts and agenda, you can add them to your google account. For the SMS, I think it is impossible. And even if it were possible, it is not that important
I hope I didn't write this post too late...

How to restore settings, apps, etc? Last phone isn't an option.

I just bought a new Galaxy S8+. When i fittest turned on the phone and tried to restore my apps and settings that were backed-up on the cloud through Google, my previous phone a Nexus 6P, was not an option for me to restore from. I skipped that step and continued to set up the phone thinking I could restore those settings at a later time. Since then I have not found any way to restore those apps and settings. I have downloaded the Samsung sync app which allows for 2 phones to connect with either a cord or wirelessly to restore/copy apps and settings but I could not get that to work. I really don't want to have to download each individual app manually and set each one up. Is there any other way to easily restore/sync my backups to the new S8 that I haven't already tried? Why wouldn't my old phone be an option to sync from the first time I turned on the phone? Is my only option to wipe/reset the phone, start from scratch, and hope that my 6P is in the option menu this time? Is there something I can do with my 6P to make it appear in the restore list this time on my S8?
Thank you in advance for any help.
The apps My Backup and My Backup Pro are good for that purpose. I'm not sure if it can save your app data if you're not rooted though as I've always been rooted. But its still useful to save some settings and apps. I've used it for around 7-8 years to restore the bulk of my information. Some apps like Waze do not like to be restored and you have to clear the app data in settings before use.
Do not restore contacts or calendar since google already has that info.

Backup and restore from note 8

Was wondering if I'm doing this right or not.
Normally when I upgrade to another Samsung device , power on the new device go through the motions then after done I use Samsung smartswitch. Any better methods?
Cheers

If you can its better to do a new setup like only restore photos and contacts the rest do it manually in most cases setting up a fresh clean runs smoothly than restoring from backup
The only thing that get's backed up for me is my contacts and photos from my Google account. I've always liked doing a fresh install on new phones, not really sure if they run better or not. Little more time to set up but I kind of enjoy it.
I usually use Smart Switch to transfer only messages (SMS/MMS) and apps.
I do not have it bring settings across. Contacts, emails, browser book marks are all sync'ed to my Gmail Account. And Samsung internet browser book marks are also sych'ed to my samsung account.
Then I manually configure my favorite settings, widgets, short cuts, and launcher.
I'll use smartswitch, then use Helium to move apps AND their data over after smartswitch has done it's thing. I have a ton of apps that I need the data to migrate and since we can't root the only way to do that now is Helium. It is slow and clunky compared to Titanium, but at least it works (knock on wood don't want to jinx it), or has in the past with some effort and time.
It takes quite a bit of time (many hours) to get everything from my old phone to a new one. Part of me wishes I hadn't upgraded just so I don't have to go through the process. Oh well.

Why not just use the built in tool the phone maker provided built in? The software you pointed to, probably skims your data and sells it. Their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are sketchy as heck!!! What info do they reserve the right to share and with whom? It doesn't even give clear definition of that info, and they don't even give a list of who their "3rd party affiliates" are.

Any way to do a full device backup unrooted? Note 9 Snapdragon. Odin maybe? Or ADB?

I wanna make a full device backup, as in a completely recoverable 1:1 copy of the state my Note 9 is in right now. But I really don't need root at the moment so I am avoiding it for now.
By 1:1 copy I mean even firmware, operating system, and so on. Everything that the phone uses to be operational.
The whole point of this is, I heavily set up and customized the interface / launcher / icons / system settings / apps / sync settings / etc to a point I cannot even write a reminder list to myself in case I need to do a fresh start. And I am really pleased with the state of my Note 9 right now. So I wanna be able to have this safely stored.
Additionally it would be nice if I can exclude some folders from the backup (mainly music, movies, photos folders to make the backup size smaller). But that is optional, as I can simply temporarily remove the files before initiating this device backup.

I don't know if a way to do this unrooted. Samsung Smart Switch gets the closest but it is still not everything. Rooted is the way to go using Titanium Backup.

Titanium Backup can do this relatively easily, I guess. But I would like to not depend on an app for that. So if I decide to root.. any way to do it via PC?
After a few years of own experiences with different android phones, i have to say: i have found no way to get a 100% full recoverable backup without root!
Most of the time, the internal backup programm have lost informations about individual app right management.
Or something was lost using adb as ( using helium backup app) because missing right management when trying to recover things in the system.
Maybe my experiences wasen't complete enough to manage that Challenge.
Upd: i have found new information about "full backup"! Unfortunately it is written in German! Good for me, but bad for you.
Maybe you can translate
https://www.netzwelt.de/system/back...up-ohne-root-smartphone-daten-pc-sichern.html
There seems to be a way to do using "android studio" and "java development kit"

you cant root for obvious reasons. unless you have the sd 9600, dont even think about anything close to having a backup solution or rooting.
read up on what model of phone you acctualy have before having thoughts of grandeur.
Seems like there is no 100% sure way? Or is Titanium Backup really 100% effective?
I was hoping for something like.. creating an ISO image off a disc, or a "Ghost Drive" (very old times stuff) from an HDD.
Well nevermind then, I will just have to keep using my phone as best I can and not mess it up too much.
Not the answer you want at all, but in my experience backing up with Samsung account was more than enough. If you use Nova you can backup your full launcher settings. Samsung will backup your full system settings. Other than per app settings it's basically all you need. Most apps are account based any way. When you refresh the phone it automatically reinstalls apps. I recently did a factory reset and the setup back to what I had is seamless. Maybe I'm not as "heavily setup" as you, but I've had my phone pretty set on customization for a while now and it was easy to get back.

Thanks, might be a good alternative.
Do you think the Samsung backup would include stuff outside the main Settings app?
Like the "one hand operation+" module from Good Lock 2018,
or the quicksettings icons on the statusbar pulldown,
the live wallpaper I downloaded,
or even the Gallery settings,
the S-Pen command center shortcuts etc..
And yes I use Nova Launcher, do you know if the backup includes all customized app icons? i.e. I changed the icons on several apps choosing from a couple of different icon packs.
It is no problem if you can't answer, I am asking out of curiosity only. Because for me it sounds rather complex for the backups to restore all these sort of things. If you have the time then please, by all means.

I can't speak for the Samsung settings of those things but I can for Nova. I have custom icons set from different packs as well. If you install the icon packs before restoring the data it will restore the icons.
Edit: wallpaper is preserved unless it's an app then you'd need the settings for that app backed up.

I switch phones...a lot. Getting ready to do it again today. Finally getting my 512GB Note 9 in the mail today.
I just use Samsung backup. It's not perfect, but between it and Google backup for settings it comes close.
I don't use Nova, I use the Samsung stock launcher. But restoring from Samsung Cloud backup, or from a Smart Switch back up on your SD card if you did one, will restore all your apps and your launcher settings (widgets, folders, icon sort order, etc). It will restore user data for some apps, but not all, so you'll need to set some of those back up. Luckily, once you log back into Samsung Pass, most of your apps will use it to log in again. And many of my apps automatically login with Google Smartlock, or whatever it's called.
What frustrates me, is it does not restore the data for edge panels. So I have to move the handle back to where I want it, set it's transparency, etc. Then I have to set up the icon shortcuts and my contact short cuts.
Then it also loses all the Quick Access icons in the Samsung Browser, so I have to deletr the useless stock ones and go back to all the websites I like to have in the Quick Access panel and add them again.
Same thing with the quick settings in the pulldown shade. It doesn't restore your custom order or grid size.
If someone can come up with a way to backup and restore those settings it would be nearly perfect. There's a few things Iin settings, such as ringtone and display settings that don't get restored, but those are no big deal.

It just came across as rude. You chastised him for "thoughts of grandeur," before you even knew what phone he had for sure. I was just pointing out he could have the 9600. Stop taking things so personal.

Yes it is a 9600, maybe it is from Hong Kong I guess. I got it from a secondhand store.
So it can be rooted.
By the way, I don't consider simply backing up a cellphone's status as "thoughts of grandeur" but to each their own. I was just thinking about something convenient and most importantly, simple to do.
If the backup/restore process takes more time than re-setting everything up if I need to, it is pointless in the end.
Gonna check Tipatch.
Thanks for all the help guys!
I recall making a backup of entire rom (data included) in early 2010s with my Sony Xperia Z/Z1, but I think you need root to be able to do that. Research Odin, but you definitely need a rooted device to use it.
