Question Human Face Picture bit darker than normal - Redmi Note 10 Pro

I bought redmi note 10 pro max somedays ago. Normal shots of this phone is fine. But when I click photos of human face it is bit darker than normal. My other phones picture is more natural and real. But this one is bit darker and it can be really annoying sometimes. Attached some picture sample here. 1st picture is from Note 10 pro max and 2nd one is from Redmi 4x I am on miui 12.5.2 by the way. Is this a software or hardware issue I am confused. Please help!

Forget if it's darker or brighter. Actual thing you have to look for is which one has natural colors (without enhancing colors artificially) because some phones/OEMs put artificial algorithms to make the picture look more brighter and put excessive brightness than what it actually has naturally.
Some people like natural colors and some like enhanced (artificial) colors/photos.
Cheers!

i can confirm the same... human face photos are too much saturated+yellowish+darker (with both stock miui and ANX )... compared with my redmi note 5 pro+mi 10i. (rn5 pro is pretty much natural WOW) .. and when adding 2x zoom to rear cam photos, it takes a bit much annoying time to process and clearly display the photo..

it's software. check Gcam then compare

I have both redmi note 10 pro and Pro max. In both phones, human faces look darker in pics as well as 1080p videos (720p vids are bit grainy and just same as other phones). The problem persists in all conditions, let it be well lit indoor or outdoor, for group photos etc. Such problems were not there in my other redmi/realme/honor phones. Indoor Pics are not all presentable whatever the setting may be. And if you zoom in to human face, they kind of messy. Grainy would have been fine. Not sure if it can be improved.

This is because different mobile phones have different shooting configurations. This problem can be solved by adjusting some functions, etc.

Facing the same situation from day one of the use of Redmi note 10 pro max.
All pictures where human is involved are darker than actual skin color tone.
Not sure how to fix that. I use some filters provided by redmi to balance out the color tone, but that is something that you don't wanna do every time you open the camera.
Any solution?
(GCAM also provided the same results)

Redmi Note 10 Pro max owned by me too has the same problem. I had checked many note 10 pro max camera review videos and for them it seems normal as any typical phone camera - smoothens a little, improve brightness, overall the picture gets pleasant and good. However, just on my Redmi note10 Pro max, any human skin gets a darker tone- FYI it is not even the natural color, but darker.
Initially thought it is a software issue and might get resolved with updates. Though I update my phone as soon as updates gets available, so far, after an year and numerous updates, the issue is still there. I tried all settings that they provide for camera and tried other camera apps etc- but results were same.
I suspect it could be a hardware issue due to bad quality control- I'm an electronics engineer and I do encounter one off problems for some items in mass production.
From the conversation above, I'm understanding that there are a few others who have same experience as me with Redmi Note 10 pro max.

Yes this is problem even new 2022 products at least on box all kind of software updates means all reviews on YouTube are fake and paid they just cheat spoiled 22000 on promax 8/128 just because of camera reviews note 9 was far better than this

Very bad camera quality. It darken human face while taking simple photos. Only human photo are darken. Other phone redmi note 9 pro and note 7 note 8 are good. I purchased this phone only for camera. But I wasted my 21000. I m very sad by purchasing this phone. Why it darken human face only. Every setting failed. Also photo crash after zooming. Very bad quality. What is fun of 108 mp camera. Redmi decieving it's customers. In future I will never buy Xiaomi phones.

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the LeEco Le Pro3's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
4 stars? This camera is on par with phones from 5 years ago, especially when things get dark.
4 stars as well, better or equal than iPhone 7 but weaker than the likes of Pixel, Galaxy S7/S8, HTC. Tip: Just use Google Camera App.
Has anyone else seen a "haze" effect when shots are taken at night with the flash? I have tried multiple camera apps and they all produce the same effect. Whenever there is very low lighting and the flash is turned on I almost get this haze on every single photo. However if pitch black this does not happen and I get a perfect photo with flash as expected.
just use a custom nougat rom and modded google camera. then the camera is decent. 4 stars from me

Install a nougat ROM and google camera enable auto hdr and be amazed!
The IMX298 takes some pretty sub-par night shots. I was trying to take pics of a half moon and full, hazy moon. Looked amazing to the naked eye but the Pro3 Elite couldn't capture the full details of the moon, unfortunately. See here:

I'm using an unrooted phone with unmodified Gcam (for 6.0) and VSCO. I also tried Open Camera but it's not as good. I wonder if Camera2 API makes a difference for low light and night shots.

So why you going to complain when this is related everywhere and we'll known. This is also why a lot of people root just to install gcam. To get a better camera experience. Judging by your comments you know this already.

It does a worse job in low light than the Zenfone 3, which has the same sensor and a poorer processor (Snapdragon 625).
Use Open Camera for low light the app makes it bright
A phone is a phone camera phone all of them have a tiny tiny sensor.
No professional or semi professional would use a camera phone for their work.
Phone camera are for those quick friends pictures when you may not have camera.
I do wildlife photography I would never use this phone for that.
This camera an fair to camera.

A lot of smartphone sensors are just getting better and better, sometimes on par with older DSLRs. The Pixel 2, for example. As the Pixel line's Visual Core chip, and smartphone sensors in general continue improving, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use a smartphone for some professional photography in the future.
Obviously a Pixel 2 doesn't compare to a $20k Hasselblad, but it's an interesting comparison nonetheless: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuTnYi_HW2o
Google Camera 4.4 HDR+ or Gcam 5.1 also works on Nougat and Oreo should do good job even in low light
It's below average at this point. It was already far behind the Oneplus 3 or Mi5s in 2016 in low light.
I compared it to the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, Redmi Pro (same sensor as Redmi Note 4) and LG V30. The Le Pro 3 only beats the Redmi Pro in low light but it's not a huge victory. Even the 2015 iPhone 6s Plus is muuuch better.
The Redmi Note 5 is likely much better with its much improved camera.

It uses the same sensor as op3 & 3t but just lacks OIS. It's not really behind OP3/3T in hardware level. So, the only difference is the software and if you use a custom ROM with right GCam 5 port with right settings, you can actually take some really good photos even in low light conditions.

I find it a shame that most who have smartphone lepro3 does not dare to post their photos taken in low light with the Google camera application to prove that it is not at all bad compared to other smartphones.

Your comparisons are awesome! I have one question though. On some le pro 3 photos of yours there is information Huawei x722 - that would be input model of Huawei in gcam settings, but what about google LEX722? Is it pixel II in the input settings?

Real Camera Experience - P20 Pro Vs Pixel 2 XL - DxoMark lies? or faulty software?

I have both devices currently and from my very brief short time with the P20 pro , the pictures taken with it don't even come close to the quality you can get from the Pixel 2 XL.
Please tell me its just a case of faulty software, else I think I may be taking this phone back sadly.
Problems so far
Images lack any real detail and are very soft
HDR mode still hidden
Night Mode whilst great is still a 4 sec picture.. (but still soft ) - (The advantage you get from those 4 secs does not seem worth it from my quick test - but i'll keep testing)
Camera UI is rubbish... (subjective i know)
But it will be interesting to know if anyone else as similar experiences , as most reviewers online appear to suggest that this is the best camera phone ever!
Can't say my photos come out soft, mine are pretty close to what I see with my eyes. Not as sharp as some cameras that seem to over sharpen via post processing. More natural images than most cams I have used.
With the P20 Pro you do have to fiddle a bit in different situations, it's definitely not as versatile as the pixel if you just want to point and shoot. Some of my pics come out better when I bump up the megapixels. Some need nightmode or for me to disable the AI.
You can adjust pretty much everything. You don't need to always take 4 second night shots, you can adjust the time for the situation. Sometimes a second is enough.
The UI is a bit of a pain I agree, although I did expect that with the sheer amount of options provided. There is a lot going on. I'm having great success in Pro mode in my limited testing so far. It is a bit or a learning curve with the P20 Pro compared to other phones though for sure.

I forgot to add that the front camera is a different story, not that I take many selfies but...damn. Beauty mode seems to be undefeatable. Even when turned off I come out looking like a Ken doll. They really need to provide some kind of fix for that. The camera itself is capable of better pics, looks like they gimped the software.
I emailed them about it, because as it is, it's not that useful.
What i can say from my experience using several huawei phone is that, ever since P9,
The phone built with a photographer user (not really common point and shoot user) in mind,
Manual or semi auto setting always work best in various condition. Especially if the user understand well the corelation between apperture size, speed and ISO sensitivity and how it affect the picture quality/result.
That being said, someone who come from pixel 2 (i own pixel 2 xl myself as well) might find that the camera app UI and the auto mode is not as easy/versatile to use compare to google one. But the potential is definitely there.
Honestly, when using huawei camera, i mostly shoot in RAW and do the post processing later on myself. Auto mode is good enough for daily usage like shooting food or friend for instagram use. But the true power is in manual mode. Thats where all those leica software engineer chime in.
Thanks guys
Can you give me some examples of your images after post-processing ?
I'm more than happy to use pro mode (I also had a V30) , but even in pro the images just don't look right at all.
Also it was mentioned that the colours are more true to life but again i'm not seeing this when compared to the pixel (I took a very quick random picture of a orange t-shirt and it came out yellow on the p20 pro... )
Horses for courses. If you only want to point n shoot then Pixel or S9, if you're more into photography than that then easily the P20 Pro over anything else on the market right now. DxO ratings have always correlated poorly to actual general use, I thought everyone had worked that out by now.

Could you please share some of the settings that helped you? I for one am not able to find the setting to disable the AI [Edit - Did you mean the Master AI setting? It seems to only affect the Photo mode]
Not a point an shoot quite yet
I would say the Samsung Note 8 or S8/9 are easier to use but the colours on the P20 Pro seem more realistic once you have disabled AI.
If you like to work in Pro mode and use the manual focus you can get some very good results on the P20 Pro but everything set to auto and its random whether the shot works out or not.
In particular for close ups manual focus is infinitely more effective than trying to wait for the auto focus which sometimes fails completely.
If you use the P20 Pro like you would a camera the depth of abilities are way up there but AI doesn't quite work well enough yet to provide reliable results.
Remember DX0 is only about sensors not ease of use or UI etc its just about sensor performance.
My 2p worth..
After more playing around with the p20 pro i've come to the conclusion that its not for me.
I'm more of a point and shoot guy and the p20 pro is too random with its pictures to really be a good point and shoot.
I'm going to stick with the pixel 2 xl, and would advise anyone looking for a simple point and shoot camera to look elsewhere.
P.S Surely the LG V30's manual mode is superior to the p20 pro if you want to play with manual settings?

I would agree with you, if you simply need a point and shoot camera. Pixel 2 XL wil do better for you
P20 Pro, just like the "Pro" moniker it bring along, will suit a seasoned photographer more.
As for manual mode conparison between LG v30 and P20, i would say, no. LG is nowhere close to huawei manual/pro mode. But again, that is a subjectivity. Someone who were common with a DSLR / Mirrorless camera manual set up, will appreciate huawei software more. Since it resemble their old "real" camera gear more. DxO is quite an oldtimer in photography area, and what they did with their test, is what normally a photographer will do as well. Unfortunately, thats not always the case with the rest of mobile phone user. Thats why the result is oftenly unrelateable.
Btw, before you actually ditch your P20 pro, can you give it one more chance, but this time,
Try to shoot everything using night mode (even in daylight). I think you will find the result totally different with your previous experience.
Thats all i can suggest for now. If you wonder, why nigh mode ?? Maybe this video can help you get a better idea :

I don't think the number of settings and the options given to the photographer are nearly as good with LG. Huawei are in a class of their own in that regard, at the moment. UI can definitely be improved a bit though.
Also, the V30 uses a tiny 1/2.9" sensor, like the iPhones.
Right, I've created a very quick group in flickr with some pictures taken with both p20 pro and pixel 2 xl.
would love to get your opinions.
In all cases i'm just using Auto with no AI for the P20 Pro,
https://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/
Again in my eye the pixel 2 xl is 'alot' better than the P20 Pro ( bad photographer? = me )
So yes i just pointed, focused and shot the picture.
Just using auto and no AI for the pictures too.
let me know if you think i should adjust settings and i'll continue making adjustments.
I have a few more days with phone before making final decision.
I've added another 3 pictures to the group
https://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/
1 taken with pixel 2 xl
1 taken with p20 pro auto
1 taken with p20 pro night mode (as suggested earlier)
Night mode just appears to oversharpen the image badly IMO?? , whilst auto is too soft
Picture 7 - P20 Pro - Night Mode
Picture 7 - P20 Pro - Auto
picture 7 - Pixel 2 XL
Looks to me very close although I think the P20 shots on Auto are a slightly over exposed but have less noise and the Pixel shots are better exposed but have more noise.
I would say the P20 will be better for night shots if you are happy waiting 6 seconds for a shot, but the Pixel 2 XL will take better auto day time shots.

iI've checked your album,
and i would agree that the roof top auto result from P20 Pro is lPretty bad. Sky was overblown. And pedestrian area is not looks that good as well. But for the night mode shoot, i wont say that as an oversharpen image though. The detail on trhe brick is quite good, sky is not clipping, and in overall, it has less noise compared to the pixel 2XL.
same case with ST. Pancras shot, i would say that in term of detail and noise level, P20 pro has an advantage here. You can check the detail on the top decoration, as well as near the ceiling. While Pixel 2 XL already abit of smudgy because of the noise, P20 result still showing the fine detail. So am not sure what you mean by "soft". (check my attachment to understand which area am talking about)
what confused me is the dinning room shot. I check the ISO and Shutter Speed of both shot. And in both shoot, Pixel 2 using faster shutter speed and lower ISO, yet the result is much darker in P20 Pro shot. This doesn't really go well with a photography theory, LoL. Slower speed and higher ISO should always resulting abrighter image. Yet the P20 Pro image is so bad at retaining the dark area.
May i know some details from you :
1. How do you point your focus/metering ? Do you always focus on same area/spot when shooting using the two phones ?
2. What resolution did you use on P20 Pro ? 40MP or 10MP ? 40MP use full resolution, but will deject the post processing, causing softer & darker image, but good for self post editing. But will looks bad if you plan to use the picture directly. In contrary, 10MP will use the post processing engine more, resulting in more pleasant picture for mobile use.

So far I'm not too wowed by the camera either :/
Hoping to learn to use it properly because some sample shots I've seen look amazing but I can't seem to get anything like that.

Is the camera really that bad?

I'm curious because I've read that a lot of people don't like the camera. Why is that? I'm not sure if I should buy that phone.

Why you make a new topic about this because its been talked about and some hate it but many love it. But why focus on words when you can judge for your self when you go to places like flickr and see how each phone takes them photo's

The point and shoot is second to none.
The pro and night modes are both second to none..
Telephoto lens is superb
Only thing is say ia better is HDR on the pixel.
Besides that the p20 Pro stands alone. Even against late 2018 phones.
Unbeatable point & shoot camera performance. Never seen a camera fair that well on phone before.
Pixel 3 camera is very good but not as refined or versatile as the Huawei system.
If you don't know how to tame it, you will not like it. But if you can tame it and know the capabilities and limitations of the sensor, you will love it!
I'm having a blast with it, because i know how it works inside out and now i can push it to it's limits.

I love it
The thing I don't like is that I often get blurry images if I point and shoot
Hello,
For "HDR" effect, yu can use "night mode" in the day time. Otherwise I love the camera... competely... Have been using this phone on daily bases for 3 months and I'm astonished.
Here are some pictures - point and shoot

You got your hands on Pixel 3 already? Weird I thought they're not supposed to deliver until sometime later.
Not at all, There is a entire thread showing the amazing photos this phone can deliver, this phone camera is versatile, it has the best nightmode out there, the best zoom, and the main 40mp sensor can capture a lot of detail, Last night i manage to take a photo of a lighting (https://i.imgur.com/32TxPqG.jpg).
a flicker with P20 pro photos :

Yea, i love the P20 pro camera and night mode is freaking awesome! Only negative things i can think off is no stabilization on 4k video and the selfie cam could be a bit better but besides these 2 i think this camera is pretty much the best you can get right now for a cheap price.
for me it doesn't matter what i read or what other peoples say.
The camera of this phone is insane. Especially the night mode. Never saw something like this. Night shots looks brighter than with the human eye?
The only thing i don't like is the post processing of the camera app (oversharpening)
P20 Pro camera is neither bad, nor cheap, but both of those are highly subjective opinions. And you know what they say about opinions....
I am enjoying mine very much.

The front/selfie camera is what most people are complaining about, esp. the color saturation. It gives a plasticy color to human skin.
The main camera is superb.
The camera is really bad on this phone.
Pictures are so over processed and lake dynamic range.
In 10mpx it's inusable and in 40mpx il't noisy. Video recording is also bad.
This phone is just horrible. My olds S8+ and Xiaomi Mi9t are much better except for zooming and low light. S9+ destroys completely the p20 pro.
I really regret my purchase.

I cannot second that. The only thing i can complain about is video recording.
Main shooter is more than capable to take great pics. It's incomparably better than op 7t.
The camera quality on this phone is really good. Anyone who says it's crap is objectively wrong.
The camera quality in the p20 pro still today better than many flagship, more than one year later, I compare the camera with the recents iPhone 11 pro max, pixel 4, mate 30 pro, samsung note 10, and it's nothing to envy of them, the kirin 970 is slower in games, but is smooth and very fast still
what is the best siting of camera ? in 10 m pixel or 40m pixel ?
Depend on the situation, with good daylight 40, 10 if you don't want big pictures files, for zoom, night and difficult light conditions better 10, normally I use 10, because Huawei optimized the software and the cams to work together in this setup, working main, telephoto and monochrome camera sensor together for improvement results

yellow photos

Hello!
When there is a yellow warm street lighting at night, the camera makes very yellow images, for example - the sidewalk color is grey but on the phone screen and on the photo taken the images are super yellow. My phone camera on standard colors, i tried to take photos on auto mode and on night mode- results are same. Can you please confirm if your phone does the same?

The camera is great except this condition when the lighting is yellow. I tried on pro with 2800 white balance - it is the lowest, but it is still yellow.
Confirm. Also, in the room when illuminated by fluorescent lights, the colors also go crazy.
Those types of light sources are challenging to measure the correct white balance of because their frequency updates vary a lot. Most of them will look yellow because that's the colour they emit at night. It's not really a bug but a choice each developer makes how they will meter those types of light sources. You can easily compensate for the default measurement by shooting in Pro mode and setting your own white balance value or even your own Kelvin value.

ו tried it. The lowest is 2800. It is still very yellow.
on p30 the same problem with street lighting
For me white is white
White even if the corridor light on the right is a little yellowish with human eyes
I am making war to this phone for this ****ty yellowish tint on every photos made after sunset with street light, or even inside home with some light. I regret to not buy OnePlus again...
Taking same shot with OnePlus 3t (3yo phone) give the right color output. I can't believe that Huawei are not able to adjust and calibrate this sensor in a better way. Camera phone? Absolutely not... Not to mention the photo quality of wide angle when light isn't perfect, noise everywhere.
I hope will get better with Emui 10/Android 10
Sometimes it doesn't even get better with editing. It's ridiculous, I'm very disappointed.if you are lucky you can recover 70% of the shot losing times with editing... When I pass to OnePlus 3t (even if it's not a camera phone) I almost stop using Photoshop, now... I'm using too much.
Honestly I really don't understand why 97% of reviews doesn't analyze and report this problem.
Very very strange or maybe you are having a hardware issue.
See what I took in out of the pocket conditions.
P30 series using RYYB sensor in main camera for collect 40% more light while other phone+camera using RGGB (basic primary colours).
so yeah, It's best for low light but you got yellow tint +warm color(red orange yellow) shift instead. I saw Huawei try to fixed it since 9.1.0.12x by software process but they can't
btw, They try again on Mate30 by put +UWA(RGGB) same pixel size at main cam(RYYB) (for color comparable on something? i'm not sure) while P30 main cam had different pixel size to UWA. but Mate30 can't take macro picture cause that bigger pixel.
look at this video for color shift problem
like China flag, flower, whatever that have red-orange-yellow color
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZUCTRDuMEA
or this at 1.21 . Red color's chair turn into orange

Not always, but I notice that raising iso get worse. Honestly I think that software can help, expecially with AI.
I don't know the condition of the photos you posted but it's good
Just for saying, the 16:9 shot is made by OnePlus 3t gcam Nightsight (3yo phone), the 4:3 is made by P30 Pro.
Yellow tint corrected by post-editing, but just look at the shot, I really like more the OnePlus with gcam... A 700€ flagship camera phone wanted by older (not camera phone) phone? Disappointed...

AFAIK, if you take photos with some warm light (yellow, red..) as a background light (dominant light), the overall result will be turned into yellow tone photos. When I looked at your photos, I saw that the buildings, streets, in where you are living, are always covered by a warm color. That's why the algorithms of P30 pro will cause this issue. This is also an explanation for the photos a guy posted above without any problems.
P/S: Did the latest update (emui 10) fix this problem?

i wouldn't call this an issue at all.. this could be fixed by an software update, since its the hardware in the phone, a different sensor which captures way more yellow details than other phones, but thats a good thing, because yellow emits way more light, and thats why the p30 pro is able to produce soo good low light shots!
i don't mind lowering the yellow saturation through lightroom, because the cam simply gives you beautiful shots with good detail, even more than you see through your regular eyes at night. Go buy another phone of you are more happy with the shots they produce instead of sh**storming about the camera

Yes, that Is what I thinks so, that Is why I'm mad ti Huawei. I can't belive that with lightroom in postproduction on JPEG file you can almost fix the Yellow tint, and the software Is not able ti do It himself, expecially with all the hype on AI. Is this AI so stupid?

I am now reading the second part of the message that I miss. Dear fanboy, if you are happy to have spent 1000€ for a smartphone sold as a cameraphone that has serious difficulties in the color management good for you. Sincerely coming from oneplus 3t (an old phone and never been a cameraphone) I am disappointed in some conditions since the 3t with gcam is better. Look at the mate 30 pro, same sensor way better job... I repeat if you are happy to often have a yellow tint and have to manually retouch the photos, be happy and be the champion of Huawei justice elsewhere. I can't afford to buy another phone 3 months after buying this since it has already lost € 250 from the amount I paid for it. Greetings and happy new year.

Dear oneplus fanboy,
i don't actually carey since i have my own opinion, all op phones are struggeling to achieve any kind of similar zoom, picture quality and night pictures. If you are not happy about the yellow tint, fine, i can live with that little postprocessing "problem". Go rage about that elsewhere, i'm more than happy what the phone offers, and that matters - i had multiple phones, from oneplus to samsung, no way i go back. I'm glad to say i spend 700€ for my P30 Pro, and i do not regret a single thing - if you however feel it was a mistake, then be happy with your Oneplus 3T and stop whining about your "loss"
Regards

Did Huawei deliver on their promise to update the color system of the RYYB?

I had the P30 Pro for almost 6 months, but the inconsistencies when it comes to colors produced by the camera forced me to sell it and get the Note 10. As great as the camera on the Note 10 is, I still miss the 5x zoom and also the sharper images on the P30 Pro, but I'm still more pleased with the Note 10 since it delivers a more consistent results, especially in colors.
When EMUI was announced few months ago, Huawei promised that a new "color system" for the RYYB sensor would come along with the Android 10 update, and that it should fix the color issues it plugged this sensor, especially when it comes to skin tones. So can someone please confirm if they did improve on that? Also, did they fix the green tint issue that was mostly visible in shots taken indoors or with the night mode?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Can't answer on RYYB or any of that YET...phone still coming. I can say for Note or Samsung. Way to many "ad's" for me in Bixby. Just downloading a silly theme your forced to watch a 14 second video ad. For $700-1000.. ... I just expect less of that I will keep a eye on this. Someone with the new updates should know this though

Yes! Although that's more of a scientific lab test. In real life tests, you can see skin colors looking dull and pale, and frequently you'll end up with a greenish tint that would be smearing your pictures.
