Coming from the Galaxy Note 10+, I decided to upgrade to S21 Ultra since it supports s pen. And while I'm a power s pen user, I didn't mind the removal of a few s pen features. What I actually did mind is the fact that they removed the micro sd card slot. I was rocking a 400GB micro sd on my old phone but now I don't know what to do with it. I'm also worried that I might fill up the internal 256GB soon as it had happened to me before, it's why I bought the sd card on my Note 10+ in the first place.
Share what you did with your old micro sd cards and maybe I can find a solution with my small ordeal.
I haven't used an SD card in a phone for 5 years now. I also have not lost a single photo or file due to cloud backups being so efficient.
Easy.. Get USB C MicroSD card reader and plug your old card in. Back up photos when needed..
Send it to Samsung, tell them you want to be reimbursed.
I'm using mine in a dashcam for my car. Over time, the microsd cards can wear out, so it's good to keep feeding the dashcam...

Nope, won't be trading a horse for a donkey. It cost me an extra $400 to aquire a device with the amount of storage I need because greedy Sammy pulled the plug on MicroSD with their flagship smartphone. For that amount I'm entitled to moan as much as I like!
Put it in my backup s8+. I'm really hoping they come back with microSD support cause like you, I bought a 400gb card. And it's actually nice to have the option of backing up my pictures to card and uploading them through cloud

That's your opinion which means nothing to me. I made the right decision, Samsung is the one who blew chunks lowering internal storage capacity and dropping external storage. Most users feel the same, if you don't agree who cares?
Had a 256GB card almost full on my S8 and it's still sitting around.
Don't really care about photos or videos since I can cloud store whatever, but I like to have my music on the phone to listen on the go through a DAC.
Down to 170GB free at the moment on the 512GB phone, but I could probably clean up around 5GB.
You can never have too much backup storage although hdds are preferable over flash. Good for backing up that lame one drive phone
Meh I'm still running my 10+ still on Pie because both Samsung and Gookill dropped the ball multiple times.
No SD card slot, no sale.
Samsung been playing this game for years, lol it's not the end of the SD card slot for Sammy unless they're hell bent on losing a big chunk of their customer base.

Heh, of all the good suggestion here this is the one I think I'll agree on the most, albeit a bit ridiculous. However, since I just renewed my contract with my network provider this year, I won't be able to get a new phone until 2023, so maybe Note 23? Lol

I hope this is true. If not, I'll have to move on to Sony phones. My 1tb card is sitting in .y drawer waiting to be used again. In the meantime I'm managing the space on my phone all the time to make sure I don't go over. Makes it inconvenient.

Turn it into a backup drive but always back that up redundantly with at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other. No such thing as too much backup.
Since you lost the data drive capacity with the SD card slot frequent internal memory backups are mandatory. A .5tb flash stick is the easiest then verify the data and back it up to the stand alone hdds. Staggering the hdd backups to the hdds helps to prevent possible malware data lose.
Flash memory by it's self is not a good backup plan... use hdds as the primary backup. Keep the backups off the PC OS hdd.
The best setup is always separate OS and data drives... Samsung

Wrong again, guess you didn't notice XDA changed course and decided to post a link for unlocking US Branded devices after myself and others raised objections. Samsung may do the same as they pay close attention to posts in thus forum. Your opinion won't alter my dissent but you might want to apply for a position in Samsung's PR Department, your defense of their brain dead move will likely gain you a fast promotion.

Yeap that's possible, but absent of miniSD card is a big deal breaker for me considering this is just only 8GB - and there's a nice article at http://www.androidpolice.com, why this is so cheap considering this is unlocked phone. It sounds like Google did sacrifice some specs make the cost down and more affordable.
I have Samsung Galaxy S III with 16GB, and plust 32GB sd card, I am already running out space since I save a lot of musics, and games on my sd card and since we all carry the phone with us (not like 10 inch tablet), it makes better sense to have bigger space on your phone.
so really 8GB quite deal breaker.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone will be happy with 8GB, I just didn't want people coming in here just to moan. It's down to cost, and if you need more space, that's cool.
16GB is enough for me, and if I need more space I'll use dropbox/google drive
Of course I would prefer microSD slot, but... I guess for 350$ which includes S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 2100mAh battery, two cameras and its a nexus, we can't complain about anything!!

Yeah, the lack of storage and no sd card for me is also a deal breaker. It's such a shame because I'm really excited about the device. The price here in the UK is so low for what appears to be a high end device, it's amazing. In fact, I've never felt so conflicted about a device. I really want it, but I know it won't hit the mark, purely for lack of storage. With games like NOVA 3 taking up 3GB, plus my sat nav requiring almost 2GB, there won't be much space for other stuff. Data coverage where I live is pretty hit and miss so streaming media from the cloud still isn't a viable alternative for me yet which is a shame. Perhaps it will at least help to drive down the price of other handsets that have high end SoC?
I think the OP's suggestion is a very good one. This approach works well most of the time on a Galaxy Note, as long as it's just a flash drive or micro SD card that the phone can successfully power. I wonder if there would be a way to toggle something like 'directory bind' on and off so that you could put music/media/data files for games on a micro sd card, then just plug it in when you need, change the path of the internal SD card to the external one, then fire up a game. That would be a reasonable compromise from my perspective.

I don't understand the people who want to buy the 8gb version. Its only a little bit more for the 16gb version.
.. and don't say its because you can't afford it.. because if this phone was the same price range as the galaxy nexus or any other high end smart phone you would still buy it.

I have a USB-OTG cable and a USB microSD card reader so I would just buy another 16GB/32GB card and carry that around with me. It is easy to take out and plug in and easy to put away when not needed.
Hey guy's. My Girlfriend got a Galaxy Nexus and YES USB-OTG is part of the Chipset Configuration the GN comes with! The Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 Chipset supports OTG as well. In the pure Android-Roms the Nexus Devices are running the Firmware supports OTG by default. As I know it's included in the kernel... so no need to create a problem!!!

I use Google Music and sync my photos to my 50GB dropbox account (thank you Samsung!). 16GB is more than I ever need. The only time I get close to using that much is if I'm dual booting 2 different roms.
I do this with my Nexus 7 and plan to continue doing it with the Nexus 4! Really useful when I want to stick a film or tv show on there and watch on the go.

Yes this would work. I personally have done it with my Gnexus and nexus 7. However, you have to be very careful with that thing sticking out of your phone. It could be very easy to knock the phone over or drop it or something and I would be concerned about hurting the stuff inside the phone.

lol no... but i have my hard drive b/c i'm using it to transfer files between people... i mostly just stream Pandora and don't play many games... the space isn't the issue for me really on this device... no cdma is ... but it's great to know there's essentially no limit to the sd/usb car we can add to this!
Why do you need so much space? I'm using an Xperia S right now, with 32GB and I've got over half of it free. 18GB free to be precise, but I haven't been deleting photos and such that I don't need, so they're at 1.3GB.

Becare not to buy a cheap sd card that is low in class...Class 2 is very low read/write speed...Here's some info you should check out in case your not to familiar between the sd classes....Hope this helps

Personally, I'm using a 32GB and it's doing me just fine. I wanted to get a 64GB after seeing that deal, but couldn't justify it at that price. Whenever 64GB cards normalize down to about $40 or less, I might upgrade, but for now a 32GB card is fine for me. I only paid $20 for my 32GB card and it works quite well.
I had a 32 gig that I was using in my Note 1, but I ran out of space, so bought the 64 gig a couple of weeks ago. When you have a few different ROMs, titanium backups, nandroid backups, movies and mp3s on there, it adds up pretty quickly.

a class 2 card will do just fine for 99% users...it's gonna suck if someone is putting tons of data on it at one time but the acutal functionality of it will be juuuuuust fine...
i, ordered this thing http://dx.com/p/sd-to-microsd-transflash-card-converter-module-27001 and will attempt to use a 128GB SD card in my Note II...i performed a rather crude experiment to see if it could fit under the battery cover...it buldges a tiny bit but it's hardly noticeable...
worst case scenario i'll have a 128 gig sd card laying around...LOL

I think the cheapest I've seen are class 6 at that capacity.

storage cards are like women...the good ones aren't cheap and the cheap ones aren't good...
I got mine from eBay just before I got the phone for about 63 bucks. It's a "SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra microSD SDXC Card 30MB/s Class 10" and it's great!

Well, the risk depends on how much your data is worth to you.
I don't see the point in trying to save money by getting "cheap" memory.
If it fails, you're f&cked.
There's always a chance of memory failing, but the chance is higher if it's a cheap copy.
Cheap batteries, cases, adaptors etc. are a "try it, and if it breaks, has a short life span, or doesn't work properly, I'll buy another one" situation.
If your SD card fails and you haven't copied your photos, or whatever, to another location, buying another SD card won't be much use.

I agree with everyone so far. There are a lot of fakes being sold..ultimately it's your decision. If u do decide though..if it's legit u can check the serial number with sandisk..if that's good then ur lucky..and that seller probably is selling stolen goods..
I got mine from bb and it was $55 including tax. I know radio shack had them at $39.99 once..and I'm waiting for it again..u never know..and that's a fair price

I recommend getting a class 10 64 gigabyte microSD card and partitioning it into 2 partitions, one for your files and one for your apps. Then use Link2SD and you can automatically install apps on the second partition. This way you will worry less about filling up your 16 gigabyte internal storage. This is what I was doing on my Galaxy S3.

I would buy a cheap memory card. I have mines in sync for dropbox so at worse I would lose the pictures from that past hour. Mines is a cheap Microcenter 32GB class 10. They offered me same day replacement if it fails.
I would never even consider getting a cheap battery. If it breaks or doesn't work properly it could take my phone with it. I had some cheap batteries before for the old epic 4g. Both of the batteries started to develop cracks around the body despite not being damage. That could have caused problems if I hadn't notice. Cheap cases could scratch your phone and sometimes the expensive one could too but I don't hear about it as often as I do with the cheap ones.
Adapters really depends on what they are for. I heard, don't know for a fact, that some of the off brand MHL adapters for our device don't always work and when they do they aren't as good as doing 1 to 1 as the Samsung adapter are. I would love to see someone test out the different ones to see if there is actually a difference. With monster HDMI and normal HDMI there might actually be a difference but as long as there is enough data it will form the same signal which means they both should work the same despite the difference in the amount of data transferred. But with audio, cables can make a world of a difference.

Thanks on the Link, wasn't a 100% on all the class speeds and what not and this helped. I just popped in my old 8gb card from my previous phone and was looking to grab a 64Gb card and it looks that it will be a class10.
Just got my Sandisk 64GB Ultra. Got it from newegg and works great so far. Tested it with H2W to make sure it was really 60GB

I got that card when it was 43.49... couldn't pass that offer up...
Looks like SanDisk is keeping it under wraps - spoke to SanDisk support rep - he denied existance, but the info is getting spread all over the internet and some Taiwanese sites already list it in their inventory, like this one: http://www.sbit.com.tw/en/productsearch.aspx?_searchtext=SDSDQUA-128G-U46A

It would be much cheaper and even as effective to simply get a Ribbon adapter (microSD to SD) and buy a standard 128GB SD card with a good write speed.

That is true and you should theoretically even get better performance and data integrity from the card with the larger surface area. However there is the convenience to the micro sd of have not having to worry about possible mods to make it fit inside your case etc

Bingo- I have a ribbon adapter soldered to a Kingston sdcard. Believe me its a pain if I want to remove it to put it in an adapter to go in the PC for whatever reason. It was difficult to solder, it's difficult to fit, and just plain a nuisance overall (but I do love having my 70gb music library and tons of leftover room for videos or whatever). Even I would strongly consider getting a $200 ish 128gb microsdxc.
I don't understand what Sandisk is waiting for. There is obviously a demand for 128GB microsdxc cards. is it possible that Sandisk couldn't manage to fit 128GB on the tiny microsdxc card?(not yet anyway?)
the 128GB SDXC cards are selling quite well... I bought the Sandisk one for only $120 recently.(for use in my camera)
Its a combination of time it takes to develop the technology and making a production pipeline for it. Once its ready they're not gonna make 100 of those cards - they're gonna make 100 million of them.

It's probably pressure from the network carriers. The service providers want people using smaller built-in memory so they use the cloud more. If users rely on the cloud over local storage, there is a much higher likelihood they'll go over their monthly data cap and get charged for overage. It's likely part of the reason Apple is the only major smartphone manufacturer (that I can think of) that hasn't adopted expandable memory via a MicroSD card slot. A 128GB MicroSD card would allow the majority of people to carry their entire collection of music, videos and pics around. Bandwidth demand would drop and carriers would lose overage revenues.

Yeah but their is a shi* ton of people qho take thousands of pics and videos. Music etc. Unless they go 64GB internal or 128GB internal there is still a need.

Disagree.
Carriers aren't making the phones. Carriers do want people to rely on added data usage but don't want to over-burden data plans which is exactly what streaming 128 gigs of media would do if it weren't onboard.
My media collection is just over a terabyte still and I have no desire to try to stream that even on my unlimited data plan.
BTW, HTC is also on this 'no expandable storage' kick for some reason. I think they're just being cheap on components to maximize profit.
the delay is most likely they're still testing the card to make sure it works as expected on various devices. These cards are used in other devices besides phones.
I highly double carriers have much input into this. The memory makers are always looking for ways to add more storage and a reasonable price for profit. And more and more, mobile devices are not including ways to expand memory; then the phone can be charge for stupid amount for a tiny bit of extra memory.
Like many, I look forward to having the extra memory. I seem to blow through memory on my phone; yet, not on the tablet.

I have way too much music, and to be honest, this would be great for carrying roms and kernels with me, as well as other stuff in case I have to do an emergency reflash. 128GB would be dandy to have.

At the time that the phone was released, the largest capacity sdcx micro card available was 64gb. I suppose that theoretically, the phone might be able to see higher cards when they are released.
8 months ago I bought a SanDisk 64GB micro SD for $56. I think it has been out for almost 2 years. When the 128GB comes out it will drop in price quick. Why? Because they need to get them sold before the 256GB comes out. Then the 512GB. Then the 1TB and so on...

What really matters is that this phone supports microSDXC, so it should support any size microSDXC. All of my android phones worked with the 64gb microSDXC even though this is the first one that officially supported it.

I have a 128GB sd card on my Note 4 and have about 38GB of space remaining. I like to have nandroids of four or five different roms that I can go back and forth on - having a lot of storage makes that easier (of course I also have music and videos and tons of photos )
I have a 16GB card in there now. I got a $20 gift certificate to WalMart and that's all they had in stock when I went, so it's what I got. I plan on getting a 128GB or 64GB card later when money permits. I don't need a whole heck of a lot of space, but I do tend to use my phone as a flash drive on occasion and being able to keep a couple of recent nandroid's for restore purposes is quite handy. That being said I sill have about 8GB of free space on the card now. It has some music, my photo backup and a few APK's I commonly re-install when switching ROM's.
Other than that for my uses I find the built in 32GB to be plenty. My old S3 had 16GB and I didn't have an SD card in it. I never really had space issues.
I appreciate all the replies thus far, never a bad idea to buy a larger capacity microSD when they are on sale. I really don't see any real-world differences between my 64GB Evo and 32GB Pro (both Made by Samsung). Perhaps I should install the Pro on my GoPro Camera instead of the Note 4 and give the Note 4 more storage space, would that seem more feasible?
The Evo is also a Class 10- UHS spec.

No, this is not a thread to seek advice on whether or not an SD card is needed on the phone and how the performance improves without it. Heck, even Samsung backtracked on this stance ?... What are your thoughts of micro SD support available on the Oneplus 5?

Thanks bud... No question Flash onboard storage is a good move on performance use cases, however, for someone like me that changes their phone every 6 months and likes continuity with my media and backups, it's not ideal. Cloud storage and even Google Photos are not quite there yet to moves thousands of files or extremely large files.

I have a oneplus 3t (I juste get it this week) It work very well. I wanted the version with 128go, but it is still out of stock So I finished by buying the 64Go..But Like you i want a lot of space. I want a space for a sd card And I hope there is one in the next.
The best thing to do is, like other phone, put a sd card on the second sim card. so iwe have the choice of 2 sims card at the same time or 1 sd and 1 sim
honestly, I don't think a lot of people need 2 sims card...

It's like you said, bud... It's not an issue of having enough storage on the phone for your use, it's more of a case for portability of large data from device to device and asking for continuity with it. As you said... Flashoholics or Phonoholics, changing their device every 6 months ?.
Better question is, why not do it? Every major OEM does it now, Samsung went back to it. They even have a dual SIM slot to use for this ?.
Oneplus 4 is rumored to be named Oneplus 5, because 4 is considered bad luck in China. Oneplus's parent company have done this in the past for their other phones and brands... That's my understanding.

Can't agree more. Just got my 1+ 3T today - my old Xperia ZU reached the end of its life and won't turn on anymore. If I didn't have proper backup in my SD card, there will be lots of data loss (yes some of important things are in cloud, but there are also stuff that are too big to store in my limited cloud). I'm not even a flashaholics/phoneholics, and really benefit from it. I can only hope if in several years my 3T I'm getting a new phone, my 3T can still be turned on/at least the recovery is accessible. Else, all is lost.

having an SD is important for me. I don't have an Ipod or MP3 reader. So I put all my music on my phone. So SD card is welcome space for me (like right now I have 32Go of music and I can put more if i had more space, and yes a listen to all my music )
And like the ProFragger said. Oneplus 4 will not exist but oneplus5 yes. 4 is not only bad luck. In there language it is the same pronunciation as the word Death or something like that.
They don't want misunderstanding as a death phone or something like that. Plus it is a badluck to put something like that on the name of a product.
The storage on the OnePlus 3T is blazing fast and massively faster than any SD card which is also one of the reasons this phone is so snappy, putting files on a SD card would end up slowing some things down (e.g. loading photos, music library and the such). I admit I was a big advocate of SD cards back when we had phones with 16GB or even 32GB of storage, but in all honesty nowadays with 128GB of storage I don't really miss the SD card slot anymore (and I have just filled 45GB, still plenty of space). As for backups, I just plug my USB-OTG cable and there you go.
