Android 12 (Viper4Android) - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Has anyone managed to get Viper4Android working on the latest beta of Android 12?
The usual methods don't work (makes sense, since its a new OS).
Just curious. I like Android 12 so far, but might roll back to 11 if I can't get Viper going.
Default audio is terrible!

I'm looking for the same!

Hopefully we'll find a solution soon!
I bought Wavelet today (original dev of V4A), but it doesn't quite work or feel the same as Viper, there is honestly no replacing it, it's invaluable, at least for those of us who love good audio quality.

Hey man I got it working. Got an apk that works on android 12.. Just install, grand root permissions, install drivers n reboot! Do disable battery optimization! Hope it works. Tested on poco f1 android 12 beta 3.

Nice! Thanks for letting me know, I'm excited now! I'll try reflashing A12 later today and try that!

Thanks this works for me Pixel 5

Unfortunately for me that apk didn't work. Audio will not process no matter what I do.
There has always been something about V4A version 2.7.2.1 that has never worked, even on my old Pixel 2 XL, my Pixel 5 doesn't work with it either. Legacy mode, compatibility mode, etc etc never make it work, or process audio. Not sure why. This is after multiple factory image reflashes, including wipes or data formatting.
I'm not sure if anyone has been able to get the Ichigo Kyrwrosaki 2.7.1.6 working on their Pixel 5's with A12 yet. It works flawlessly on Android 10 and 11 for me. Was hoping it would've worked with A12.
Thanks for any info provided and all the help given so far!

Sometimes same issue happens with me. I follow these steps:
1. Play song.
2. V4a doesn't work.
3. I force close v4a.
4. I open v4a.
5. I pause and resume song from notification bar.
Try the above steps, may help..
To avoid this I disabled battery optimization and have enabled legacy mode.

Working good for me i installed the driver let it reboot then i went into the settings in viper app and toggled the legacy mode i also have the kernel set to permissive

Not sure what happened but v2721 works well for me on Android 12 Beta 3 and Beta 3.1 update now. Occasionally I might have to toggle legacy mode on/off but it works.
Side note, to me v2716 of Viper sounds better audio quality wise. Almost like there's a lot of gain or distortion/clipping out peaking happening, regardless of output adjustments. Overall still sounds great, just something I noticed.
Hopefully all of the methods everyone has posted will work on the final version of Android 12!

I really recommend to always refer to the source where you had obtained that. It could be a dangerous app, you know. Also, avoid permissive at all cost, it's VERY dangerous. Is it enforces or permissive thing ?!

Only works in permissive with legacy off here on A12 on Pixel 4XL....
Tested by setenforce 0
Force closing the Viper app
Reopening app
Status ok, but not processing
Toggled Legacy Mode off
Status ok, and processing
Im used to my modded Ichigo Kyrwrosaki 2.7.1.6 on A11 just working
Its modded to start permissive, but switch to enforcing after 30 seconds, doesnt work on 12...status is normal but it wont process audio at all
As always it will take a little time to figure out the magical mix of things to get it working

Updated to newest Magisk and everything is broken again.
Guessing this is what you were referring to @73sydney.
Hoping to figure something out.
My driver status stays abnormal no matter what now.

Pixel 6, android 12 here. I downloaded the apk and selinux enabler and installed both. It works for like a minute, then viper stops processing, and doesnt work unless you reboot, and only works for about a minute again. Something is killing it.

I am NOT using A12, but one thing I have used in the past to stop Ansroid from killing apps in the background is by sett9ing the OOM to superman. And the Nice to high, just for good measure. It would be possibly telling to know exactly which process is dying.

Sooo... I reinstalled viper and the selinux switch. I then turned off battery optimization for both apps. Here's where it gets weird.. I have apple music playing, viper is running, tapping the status button shows that it is processing, but as Im making live changes, you cant hear any kind of change whatsoever. If I enable legacy mode, it stops processing, disable, goes back to shows processing, but its not actually working.
Im not a developer, so I can only tell you what I did at the apps level, hopefully that helps the devs out there. I flipped the switch for compatibility mode and restart the phone. Started apple music, status button is greyed out, and its not processing, cannot hear any live sound changes. So I uncheck compatibility mode, and reboot again. Start apple music, open viper, compatibility and legacy are both OFF, and this time, its NOT processing as shown when pressing the status button. I then enable legacy mode, and now it shows processing, and making the settings changes actually works.
I have my pixel A buds in for the past 10min now, and viper has not stopped processing. My only issue is that it seems like the settings dont make as big of a difference as Im used to them making a difference, if that makes sense. At lunch, Ill test in the car with the LDAC BT adapter and see how it sounds.
Hopefully that helps everyone! Really appreciate all the input.

UPDATE: Would not work with the LDAC adapter, but worked fine with stock dash BT, arrgg...

Tempting Android N AOSP

Very tempted to update to Android N (Team FXP AOSP)
But I value my camera quality (Using DRM fix kernel, works great)
Knowing that the Xperia is never going to get android N, due to google removing the Z3's kernel from their source, would it be worth updating to AOSP, basically removing all the features that are so good?
You answered your own question, stick to stock if you want a camera that works 100% well. AOSP camera has never been good for any phone and the camera on Nougat barely works anyway.
Next best thing is Concept ROM, which still has a decent camera
I'm tempted to try Nougat AOSP. I don't mind losing the camera on Z3c that much since I prefer my camera on my G4. But I don't know how to install it. Is there a guide? That's up? Last time I checked Sony's site the guide was down.
Two qustions, how bad does the camera become, is it still usable for simple random snaps to send to friends on IMs?
What is DRM fix kernel?
TIA
Lol nougat barely works. I've been running it for days now. My opinion is nougat is excellent on z3c. I can upload a flash able zip with full Google apps if people are interested

That does sound good. Get 6-8h SOT with SLiMM ROM. Do you know how much you get on this one?
Also could you do me a favour and check which Android Security Patch it got? It would be awesome if PA is up to date with that.

Hey thanks. Quick question, you said you have been running nougat on your device and everything (but the camera) seems to be working. I just installed it last night (and my gapps are working as well now) and I already noticed a couple of bugs. First and most important, i can't hear the person on the other end of the line. It appears that my earpiece is not working. The person on the other end can hear me, but I can't hear that person. Second and minor issue, once i plug in my z3c to charge, the battery icon top right shows the charging sign as it should. However when i unplug, that charging sign doesn't go away. So far i have noticed these bugs, can you confirm if you are not facing these bugs (so I know its my device that is messed up).
Thanks,

Hi!
I'm using the latest AOSP for our devices, and facing thiese bugs too. ( 20160912 ). Sometimes I've got calling bug when I can't hear the other person on the line, but he can hear me. Just a restart solves it, but I've got thiese problem nearly evry tenth call time... And one more thing, while i'm on calling and my phone set to minimum volumes, everyone else could to hear my phones speak... or I can say it, what you're talking about. Like when i set the speak to a loudspeaker, as though it were the whole conversation. The speakers are very loud on minimum volume, and not too much louder on maximum settings. ( but, i think they are a known bug ).
Second, the cahrging icon. Yes I experienced it too, when you disconnect the charger from the phone, the icon remain the same, like when the charger plugged in.. And I think, something gping on the background, because my battery goes down nearly 30 percent by a night ( 8h ).
About the rom speed. I think, it runs very smooth / fine until more than five software parallel, ROM while fast. If more than five program run in the background, ROM start to tear, slow down. If you delete them from the memory, the system will be fast again.
I tried to take a logcat with "aLogcat" from playstore, but it's not working. I remember it from my previously phone age, i must convert it to system app... But now, I can't do this, because i did it with Titanium Backup, and now they not support andoid N..
Anyway, I think its will be a very good AOSP rom... ( without camera :/ )

Problem with Sound After Installing Pie

Hello everyone,
Some days ago i got the ATT 5ge update and also the Android Pie upgrade. Two days after i was watching a movie and i noticed the volume got lower. I was on MX player and the setting was at 8 and it remained at 8 but the volume got so low i needed to put it on 12 to continue watching the movie.
I have tried using different players, using youtube and even putting the phone in safe mode. No luck. Ringtones and notifcations seems fine, not sure thou.
I am just asking if Pie has known sound issues so i can rule out speakers hardware problems.
LOL @ "5G update." ATT marketing works, I guess, no matter how dishonest.
No I've not had any issues with sound on my Note 9 or Note 8 running Pie.
I know but there is no other way to call it haha. Maybe the new fake 5g update. anyway anyone is having issues or have read about it? I read at launch some devices had problems before a patch.
I found the culprit. I noticed several settings were change after the pie update and found out dolby atmos was disabled, all is back to normal.

Glad you got it worked out. FYI, in the future, you can just refer to it as the Pie update. Or even the One UI update. You don't have to specify the 5G update. We will just laugh at you. LOL.

There is a bug in android pie - if you turn off dolby for gaming and run some game, after you quit the dolby atmos will be turned off (every time you play any game... cool). Was reported to samsung during the beta countless times and they didn't fix something as simple as that.

Took Nexus 6 out of drawer, now no sound from speaker, earphones work fine

Hi,
I just took my old Nexus six out of the drawer thinking I would start using it again but sadly the dreaded speaker death has occurred. Is there a series of steps I should take to try to fix it? Earphones work fine and Bluetooth works fine but nothing comes out of the top speaker at all even with the volume set to high. I'm on android version 7.11, pure Nexus v. 7.1.1.20170215-OFFICIAL, rooted, with the kernel Franco 3.10.40.
What should I try first, hardware fixes or software? It used to work, now is dead.
Roll back to stock first to verify whether this is a hardware or software issue. If it's software, install a ROM more current than Pure Nexus. Otherwise you'll have to hunt for a new speaker.
I will install stock first. Where would I find a new speaker if that's what it needs?
Update: rolled back to stock and sound works fine now. You are brilliant! Now have to decide what ROM to use. Any recommendations?
You first have to decide if you want VoLTE or wifi-calling. For that you need a Oreo rom, and the only one I know that is still updated is LineageOS 15.1.
Otherwise, you can take your pick from the Pie roms. I believe that they all work fine on the N6, it's more a question of which extra features you prefer.

Is there any great advantage to upgrading from stock? Now that I've got the phone working pretty well I'm a little hesitant to start messing around with lineage or one of the pie ROMs. Will the phone run faster and have less lag and have better camera options if I upgrade the ROM?
Thanks again for helping me get my phone working again.

The new roms have many more features, both from the newer Android, and from the efforts of the rom devs.
Of course, you may not need or even like the new features. Myself, I hate the new auto-brightness in Pie.
There are also some speed optimizations, but IMO they don't make a world of difference.
I believe that the camera driver is closed source, and therefore unchanged from stock. The camera app can however provide different amounts of options on top of the driver (Snap Camera in lineage has a lot of options) - but you should be able to get that by installing other camera apps on stock as well.
But most of all, I like to have the newest security fixes.
The bootloader has an option called: "factory mode" that has an app called: "CQATest"
After loading it choose "CQA Menu Mode"
Audio --> Loudspeaker
This will play an audio test file at full volume until you press the vol down or back button.
This is a useful application for general hardware testing too.

Woke up...phone is dead

Guys,
I have Tencent version with WW fingerprint. Had it since end of September. It will not charge (no lights) and not turn on with any combination of power and volume etc. I have tried both ports in a PC and nothing.
If anyone can help, great, but I'm not optimistic. Anyone know if there was an update last night. I did have Asus Launcher 1.04 by HomerSP installed (https://forum.xda-developers.com/rog-phone-2/themes/app-asusupdater-ww-updates-tencent-t4022547) and was just wondering if somehow it did update but I suspect something went pop in the night. It was charging at the time.
I'm in the UK so I doubt Asus will honour a warranty.
Thanks guys for taking the time to read.
EDIT: Guys Phone just came on. Held down power and plugged it in to my PC. Sorry for the time you wasted reading this....
Glad u fix it, i think it's software issue, before i had a few bugs like fps drops in games, screenrotation after unlocking screen etc... For me that default rom is really crap, so looking forwrd for Android10 and custom roms. Btw i can recommend to flash kernel from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ro...rnel-kirisakura-1-0-0-asus-rog-phone-t4028237 - since then i didn't have serious issue
Thanks for the suggestion. I do like custom ROMs but I need to retain my banking apps. Using magisk modules didn't help with my old doggee S60 phone... They still spotted the root.
If anyone can confirm it works with starling, vanquis and EE I'd give it a go

Yes, I tried that on S60 made no difference. It's coming to the point where I may risk it. I miss twrp and I want to have LTE and WiFi calling. I'm sick of waiting for Asus to official activate them. I'm really happy with the phone overall.

Honestly, for 90%+ of things/time it's almost identical to stock with tiny tweaks here & there. Biggest difference by far is exactly what they advertise as having... STABILITY. It just feels like a rock solid mirror image of A12 on a Pixel which is exactly what I was looking for, Magisk can tweak the rest.
For battery life, seems like it's definitely on par or better but I run LSpeed on all my devices so that's just my opinion, no proof.

+1. I additionally flashed with fsociety tribute kernel and love it.
flashed with unoffical twrp in adb sideload gave errors but i just ignored them. booted up no problems. went through setup. rebooted back to bootloader flashed fsociety tribute kernel with unoffical twrp adb side load. so far no problems.
anyone know how to get magisk to work?

Reboot to twrp and adb sideload magisk.apk
interesting. i always changed magisk.apk to magisk.zip and tried to flash it. never tried adb sideload the magisk.zip. worked like a charm. thanks! now it makes me want to reroot my nvidia shield.
i was actually surprised how easy it was to compile their rom. their instructs are fairly straight forward. skipped the ccache stuff first time. 2nd time i enabled it with compressing made it a little slower. compiled on debian 11 both times with no problems. process is long with the ccache and compression. 1hr 30min to 1hr 40min on my duel cpu 32 cores total running at 3.6ghz and 160gb of memory with a wd sn750 1tb nvme drive.
i think i have found rom that i will stick with until a really customized one comes along. barely any google garbage loaded on it. anything else i can root with magisk and use system tools android to strip out the few remaining google garbage apps.
best part is it's on A12 so the unoffical twrp seems to work without too many problems.

i stripped out a lot of apps. chrome, play store ar, calendar, digital wellbeing, pixel launcher (replaced with nova 7), gboard (replaced with openboard), safety, record, android auto (worthless i drive a 78 k10 and have a 2 knob radio), google support services (backdoor for google) and a few other useless apps that i can't think of at the moment. all can be removed once rooted with magisk and i use system tools android (the only app i have found that removes them and not hides them) to strip out the system apps. i use greenify (gotta get the beta from app mirror to use it on 12) to kill the apps as soon as the screen shuts off. i loaded fsociety tribute kernel. no tweaks i think i bumped the max cpu 24 mhz just to smooth it out a little more. i don't use the phone a lot. connected to wifi most of the time. gone from 100% to 77% in 22hrs about. i have only had the rom installed for a little over 24hrs. the battery drain seems about the same as stock. i did a dirty flash of my build of pixel experience and had to reroot in that 22hrs. so most of that 22hrs is standby time. mostly i check my miner and the price of crypto every so often and clean up my junk emails.
i guess i will know more as the week goes on. i usually get about two days of my type of usage before i get down to about 36% or so and charge again.
my main reason for switching is because i could not update any apps on the stock rom. if i updated messages. the keyboard would disappear or not show up. just before i flashed to this one. i would get the text message notice and when i went to the app. there was no new message. i would have to close and reopen the app to see the message, maps if i started a nav and because i use 3 button gestures. i couldn't close maps when i was done or it would split screen and hang up so you couldn't use the phone. phone and contacts app would work about 1/2 the time. camera app i would be lucky if it opened. problem with all of these apps for me have been going on since the A11 first release. i kept flashing new stock rom after stock rom hoping they would fix their garbage rom. that never happened. it got worse not better each factory rom flash. not really a LineageOS fan. nothing wrong with it. just its on A11 and the unoffical twrp seems to work a lot better on an A12 so i figured i would give this one a shot.
Anyone else having any form of A12/L/QPR3/ROM reduce their WiFi features down to just a toggle that, in true Google fashion, doesn't seem to toggle anything??
After the enjoyable game of "who gets pissed & hangs up on who first", I know it's baffling the hell outta whatever grade school they outsourced their tech support to..
Updated to 2022/3/30 build using updater. Stuck at 50% finalizing update. After uninstalling Magisk finalizing update was completed. Reinstalling and patching boot.img to get root back caused boot loop. What did I do wrong?
EDIT: forgot to add that used factory img from previous February build to patch. Do boot.img change every build?

Haven't seen any posts or heard anyone mention it yet but Pixel Experience on 5a is now official build(link below). Flashed it last night from A13 DP1 & pretty damn happy with all aspects (stability, set-up, looks/feel)

The question is, there are headphones, they have support for aptx adaptiv, a Google pixel 5a phone, the processor supports the codec, but there is no support in the system, can the PE developer include this codec in the firmware?

I'm not affiliated with PE ROM in any way, other than posting the link to give people an option besides LOS18.1, so that'd be a question for the dev(s).
I know there were a few Magisk modules floating around on Github but support for A12+ would be the kicker, could be a quick fix...
**Also PE+ should drop any day now for the Pixel 5a but haven't had time to actually read up on what's different with PE vs PE+**

you probably would get a better answer to that question in their telegram group. as this thread is started by a regular user not one of their developers.
