Question Bad sensitivity spot issue - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Hello,
I need some help from the xda community.
Just recently bought S21 Ultra, but I have an issue while using S pen with any application that has push sensitivity recognition just in one spot.
For example 'Infinite painter' or 'art flow' with sensitivity brush like 6B pencil.
I'm not completely sure that it is hardware (display) issue of this phone or all S21 Ultra have this issue.
I want to ask someone to try it either to confirm or deny. If it is the issue of this particular phone, I still have some time to change the device.
Thanks for your help!

Are you using a case or something with a magnetic lock system by any chance?

Forgot to mention. No, no case, nothing magnetic, no screen protector. The photo was taken while the phone was on my lap.

Okay well in that case I would say a faulty digitizer, I guess you should get it replaced ( under warranty )
I've seen many users having a similar issue which was triggered by a magnetic case thats why I asked about it ;-)

yeah, I've googled this issue, I know about magnets. But it looks like there is something underneath the screen that produces some magnetic interference. And it works with very big pressure... I was just wondering if everybody has this issue and just don't care\know, or it is just me. That's why I've asked somebody to test it.

Well mine works flawless and I would contact Samsung to get it fixed if I would have the issue

So, as I understand - you did try S-pen with any application that support sensitivity recognition in this area and it works? The general notepad or any other application that is just for writing works in this area of the screen. The problem is only with push-level recognition.

How do I enable the pressure sensitivity?
Here is what I achieved on my S21 Ultra (snapdragon, USA t-mobile variant) using an older s-pen taken from an older note. But when I used different pressure, the Infinite Painter app acted like the pen was either on or off, but no gradients in between. Like I dragged the pen across the screen and pushed harder and softer, but the result was just no ink when too soft, and pure black when hard enough or harder. Nothing in between. Is this because my s-pen is too old, or did I need to turn on a setting in the phone or the app? I selected the 6B pencil in the app.

Thank you very much! yeah, I didn't realize this. I bought S-pen with the phone and I guess it's a different one from old Note S-Pen

I don't have infinite painter or any other painting app, but I tried my S pen on Samsung notes and there doesn't seem to be any irregular spots on the screen. Both tracing and pressure work on all parts of the screen as far as I can tell. I used my Tab S7's included S-Pen.

Thank you! Now I'm wondering if it is S-pen issue. Just noticed that if I hold the pen almost completely 90 degree to the screen, it just works fine on this spot.

Does anybody else find the S.pen of the SGN really bad??.. when it comes to drawing some stuff..? Any remedy for that?

i don't draw but i do annotate quite a lot, and it feels like the calibration is a bit off. what in particular about it is your concern?
Like, the place where i point the pen and the place where it writes is not the same, the location where it writes is a little bit to the upper left( not precise)... and its also has a latency after writing...
Its not a very big problem for me just a little critic...

I've used five s-pens so far, and two of them were significantly worse than the other three. Good news is that the problem is most likely with the pen itself and not with the Note!
Try getting a different pen (e.g. there is an official Samsung holder that comes with another pen). For the offset problem, try to switch from right to left to right... several times --- sometimes that helps to make the offset more reasonable. Also experiment with the angle of the Note as you write, often that makes a difference too.
Just my two cents...
The reason why it seems a bit of is done on purpose.
You notice this when you change your writing hand in the settings.
When it's set to your right hand, the drawing is slightly left of your pen. With the left hand it's the other way around.
This is done so you can see what you are drawing/writing and your hand is not in the way.
I know it sucks, but Samsung made it this way.

This is true, but some pens have larger offset than the others. I think some of them have sensitive elements inside aligned better. And actually this works rather nicely if the offset is reasonable, at least for me. Takes a bit of practice, but feels quite natural after a while... if you think about it, some offset is appropriate, since there are three surfaces at different depths: the writing surface, the "displaying" surface, and the actual surface which is sensitive to the pen's movements (this one is quite deep, it's behind the screen, not in front of it)...
Try different pens before giving up
Yeah the calibration is not exact to the point. When I'm writing words normally I'm not really affected, only when it comes to drawing in slow motions, the placement is off and it's frustrating for drawing little details.
However, I managed to dig out an old stylus which came with my ancient fujitsu tablet PC and it's calibrated perfectly.
I've noticed that the angle to which I hold the s-pen to the surface makes a difference in percieved accuracy.

It will run without root, kinda, but you'll be getting something like this on the unlock:

With the Fujitsu pen, does it have calibration issues or extra lines if you write on it upside down, like if you were lying on your back? My biggest pet peeve with this phone is that I can only use the pen if I'm sitting upright and holding the pen just so, otherwise calibration is way off and a lot of unintended lines appear.

I've noticed this too. It's most apparent to me when I set my phone on a table, holding the pen by it's very end. Touching the screen with the point and changing the angle of the pen relative to the screen--without moving the tip of the pen;s position at all--you can see the cursor move with the angle of the pen, even though the tip stays in one place.
The best way to fix this, in my mind, is for Wacom to do on this phone what they do for a lot of their tablets--have a little dot show up on the screen when you hover your pen, so you know where you'll be drawing.

I see, so its most likely caused by the pen rather than the note itself... ill give the app(touchscreentune) a try..thanks.

S-pen replacement and calibration

This is a two part question.
Firstly does anyone know if there is a way to calibrate the s-pen. Mine seems ever so slightly off when writing as I would with a normal pen (on a slight angle).
I also have the bamboo feel but that is even worse (around 2-3 mm off).
Next question is are there any other s-pen out that like the bamboo feel? I like the bigger size of it as it's more comfortable for writing with but accuracy seems to be the issue with some third part pens. I'm surprised there issue nothing from Samsung already for the note 5. I understand there are the pen holder or the bt pen but those are for older devices so I'm not sure how accurate they are or compatible.

Can you make sure that there is no cover when trying, as magnetic covers or even flip covers cause the S-pen to be inaccurate.
in older models, magnet closure cases made a huge difference.

Try typing in *#0*# in your dialer. This will bring up the integrated hardware test. There should be one for S-Pen (not touch) and try it on that screen. If it does not pass the test, then you are probably looking at a hardware failure/malfunction.

I know this is an old post, but I am trying to find a gold s-pen. Samsung doesn't sell them on their site. To get mine warranties will take over a month. I have seen them on Amazon but really no where else. Wondering if anyone has tried them and any issues. Where do you recommend?

For what it is worth...
I have both a NOTE 3 and a NOTE 5
The 5 I only bought recently and the Stylus hole was blocked and there was some weird other stylus somehow wedged into it.
The previous owner knew he was selling me a duffer but there we go.
Anyway, I managed to get it out and I bought a new stylus for it, but the bloody thing was not quite right... It was something like about 1.5mm off down and right. I am very very good with sizes and so trust me, its more than 1mm but not quite 2mm but thats by the sideways... I just assumed that the bloody thing needs calibrating to this stylus.
Anyway, it was some time later that I thought... Why not try the note 3 and 5 styluses on each other... They both work just fine, but guess what? It was not the screen that needed calibrating at all? - the stylus is to blame.
The Note 5 stylus is wonky just the same on the Note 3 and the Note 3 Stylus is perfect on the Note 5
If only I could swap them over?
But there you go... Maybe its a new stylus or a replacement stylus you should be looking for and not a calibration of the screen?
yeah mines a few mm's off as well. its very annoying.
There is also a waycom test in the integrated hardware test menu (this would be good for seeing how your s-pen registers on the screen)
Also you may want to try another N5 s-pen (if you know someone that has one see how it does, the one you have may have a defect)
You can take off the cover on the button of the spen and there's a tuning adjuster under it. Factory is set to be off a little.

I tried Note 4 stylus on Note 5 and it felt like a Note 7 stylus on Note 7. Note 5 stylus is useless. in comparison.
So stupid that companies still make Note cases with friggin battery clips on them. But then again there seems to be a fair amount of people who buy these Note devices but rarely use the S-Pen which is bizarre to me.

Pen sensitivity not equal on the screen

I've noticed lastely that my pen sensitivity is different in the middle of the screen compared to the corners. I have to press down the pen harder to actually write something, while on the corners I can write normally.,
This was not always the case, the problem appeared just recently. The pen has bad sensitivity in the middle regardless if I try to write or just scroll on a webpage with it.
Restarting the phone didn't help.
I have a custom rom which I have not upgraded for months now (I'm waiting on Oreo roms).
The digitizer seems to work fine when I use my fingers.
I have uploaded a screenshot testing the pen. The corners are where I gently just swiped with the pen. As you can see there's nothing in the middle.
Could this be software (rom) issue, digitizer losing response or the pen itself? Any ideas?

Correct, I suspected it and removed the case and it solved the problem.
I recently bought https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Zim...lloy-Metal-Cover-for-Samsung/32828780058.html
It's a fantastic case in every way, except that it makes Spen go crazy.
Will it cause any permanent damage or am I safe to continue using it?

I've read that magnets won't damage the phone, unless it's a really strong magnet like a MRI scanner. I won't be coming near any of those anytime soon.
The only thing that would be temporarily affected is the compass, which I don't use, and Spen in this case, which I use rarely.

Plastic interfering or scrolling issues?

The p20 pro is delivered with a screen protector. On top of this is also an extra layer of plastic with a red tab at the top, meant to be removed before using the phone. I have to leave this second plastic layer on the phone to be allowed to return it.
Scrolling isn't good on the device. It's like the phone hold off scrolling until I've moved my finger some distance in a direction. This causes scrolling to be unsmooth and I'm not sure if it is due to the extra plastic layer interfering with touch sensitivity or if I have a faulty device or even worse: this is the way it is.
See video below for illustration. Notice how scrolling won't move right away with the finger. How are your phones with this? I hope that it's just the plastic but I'd rather not risking it to rip it off and find the issue remaining and no return.
Comparing on my current phone, a note 8, scrolling follows the finger right away.
Link to clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzek18SlFY0&feature=youtu.be (above embedding didn't work for some reason)
It's not the plastic protector that's causing it. I have removed it and mine is exactly the same.

Sad to hear it. It makes the scrolling experience feel like something from the entry level. I really wanted to like this phone but it seems the camera is all that's going for it in my book.

Seems to be a Huawei thing. I've had the same on a Honor 9 but it was much worse as it made it impossible to use it like I use my phones normally. It doesn't bother me too much on this one even though I notice it. On the Honor 9 it was hardware fault or just a bad digitizer because I had another Honor 9 too which was just fine and instant in the scrolling. It might be the digitizer this time around too. If I enable "show touches" under developer options it just doesn't trace the finger when doing smaller movements.

Same thigh here. It behaves the same way when showing touches so something tells me this may not be software but it's hard to tell. Seems some do not have the problem but I kind of get the feeling that non power users may not even notice it. I'm just the kind of person taking note of things like that this and it ruins the entire experience.
Add the horrible oversized ui to this and a few of the other kinks and suddenly all this phone seem to offer is a great camera and a lovely placed fingerprint sensor.
This seems to be the same issue as we are having in this thread.
Here is a video of the issue that I made. Note this is without the plastic interface OP was mentioning.

[Solution]
Since nobody gave a damn and I searched REALLY HARD for a solution. I will take one step forward and help anyone who maybe will have this problem in the future.
What you will need:
- Glue ( I recommend a Glue Stick, since it fixes good and can be easily removed.)
- Aluminum Foil
- Scissor
You will have to crop a little rectangle and test in which height of your SPen the foil will stop the problem.
In mine happened this way:
too close to the tip and the pen won't be detected
Too far from the tip and the problem remains.
In this position all functions work as intended. See photo.
Hit thanks if I helped you!
I did not want to use warranty because I will hate to wait weeks without a cellphone.
You can paint the foil for aesthetics purposes as I will manage to do better than I did
The cropped foil can be in the minimum size you achieve to make it work. Foil is very thin so there is no problems in inputting and removing from the slot.
[UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE]
After several days I tried the pen without the foil stick and surprise ! It works as intended ! As I said eletromagnetism is tricky so you won't want the foil to be permanently glued to your pen.

Yes , but nothing that would cause severe damage. I always use my case and the problem started quite spontaneously.
And I don't think a fall damage would cause this problems in a perfectly squared portion of the screen
> I can use airviewing( in this square) in a uncommon distance (closer) what is a oxymoron because I write without touching in higher distances (WTH)

Anybody had this problem? If yes, you did you solve this ?
Really annoying and Samsung just thinks I'm idiot telling me to do things like:
- Change the tips
- Hard Reset

Please change the beginning of your solution section. Comes off very condescending and people do give a damn. Considering that I posted a question to you about it at 130am my time, and people probably just didn't have anything to say as they might not have an idea as to why the issue was happening, or didn't get a chance to browse the forum as yet.
Good hack either way with the aluminum foil. Does it cause any issues with charging the method of the pen? Have you used to pen to depletion and then see if it charges after?

Well, been using it for a few hours and I got no interference in bluetooth functions and neither in the recharging by induction. But what you said about recharging made me think that the smaller the foil crop... the better.

Nice. Have you thought of moving the hack into the pen? That'll be awesome to do and aid with aesthetics. I haven't gone to the point of taking one apart but it's probably just some 3m glue being used to hold the unit together.

That is something to consider but I don't feel comfortable messing with the insides of SPen since it's so fragile and intend to be water resistant. Maybe if I had more knowledge about it's structure...
3M glue I can say is something you won't desire. I wouldn't stick something permanently in/on the Spen. Electromagnetism is kind of tricky so the solution today can be the problem tomorrow. So easy removal should be preferred.
I use Gnacad quite a bit and the best I've achieved so far is to put the floating icon in the trash can (long press it) that seems to tone down it's sensitivity but it is still sensitive to the temperature and wether the screen sensitivity setting is set to screen protector or not and of course if a screen protector is used which I no longer use (paid for the gorilla might as well enjoy it.!

YES ! I just think exactly the same about the Gorilla Glass. I'm not paying for this and covering with some cheaper glass protector. I just take good care of my screen and it looks amazing !
Did you have this same ''drawing'' problem? Excuse my ignorance but... What is Gnacad?
