Question Defekt screen? - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

So I bought my S21 Ultra last Friday. I lie with my mobile in bed late at night with brightness at its lowest with "dark mode". Notice that when I have dark gray backgrounds and open the keyboard, horizontal lines appear (thin light lines). They disappear as soon as I close the keyboard.
Someone who can test if you see the same thing?
So If I sent it back to samsung I can say that i have asked owners and they dont have that problem.
1 set brightness at minimum
2 darkmode on
3 120hz on
4 high contrast on keyboard
5 total black rooms
6 open play store and press search so keyboard appears
7 now I see thin lines (which disappears completely when I close the keyboard)
It looks like this

If it is application dependent (appears only when the keyboard is active), it might be a software alrifact.
Also, please bear in mind that OLED displays, when set to minimum brightness, might have a problem with displaying uniform colors. You might see clusters of tens of pixels that are just a tad bit brighter than the ones around. I've noticed this with every OLED display I have used in the last decade or so.

Ok thank you.
Yes it's only showing when i use the keyboard.
My old note 10 plus did not have this problem.

Different screen, different version of Android and Oneui, maybe even different keyboard, keyboard version or theme.

check app named Display Tester https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.displaytester&hl=en

What model, carrier and software build do you have?
Software build: (settings > about phone > software information - last 4 digits of SW build number)
Is this happening in all the apps? or just the email as shown in the picture?
try it on safe mode and see if it still happens. maybe you are using a third party keyboard?

It happend in dark grey and some light color, swifty keyboard and stock samsung keyboard, showing must if i use high contrast in stock samsung keyboard.

Here is one more:
Display issue at 120hz and low brightness
My note 20 ultra has vague gray horizontal lines when displaying a gray background at the lowest brightness when running at 120Hz but it disappears at when the brightness increases or when switching to 60hz. Is this normal for AMOLED displays ?

Strange no one can test it so when i send it to samsung and maybe get a new phone and the same thing will show on that one to..

i9000 screen problem

Hi all,
Got the Galaxy S for a month, pretty happy with it. Yesterday, the brightness suddenly gone up. The worst part is the display lost the gradient scaling and it is replaced by colour bands!
Apps like the stock video player for example. Before the video is played, you can see the grey control bar at the bottom covers by a lot of colour bands. The colour of the movie is all washed out as if you were playing it in 8 bit colour mode. Where the same avi played okay before, crystal clear and colour was rich.
Same thing with the charging screen while the phone is off. You can see the colour bands on the grey area of the shadow of the green battery. Just wondering if anyone has the same problem?
Cheers!
Factory reset :d
Tried all that full factory wipe, data reset, flash to different rom. Nothing works
Then your device's probably faulty. replace it.
Pretty certain it is. I took a screenshot of the video player and it looks fine but on the screen, you can still see those colour bands meters away.
I guess this indicates the LCD is faulty.

The galaxy s has no LCD its LED
Ive noticed when you slide down that tray from the top, when closing it mine has MANY TIMES switched to full brightness. But simply tapping the brightness button on the multi widget thingy makes it go back to how I want.

Hi I have the exact same problem! But I didn't notice it before now wen I saw this thread. But all the colours are just fine when I play a vid, it's just the grey controlbar that is by many stripes of different colours, looks like 8bit colour. But when the vid starts playing its just fine, because it gets transparent. Should I get this phone changed, have just had it a couple of weeks.

Hi Radat,
I posted more info in the other forum including some screenshots. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1520586
Hope yours okay. I am going to call Samsung tomorrow.
romhunter,
yup, saw the screenshots, looks like quantization problem i.e. that colours are using fewer bits than normal. For example, RGB screen might use 24 bits per pixel, 8 bits per r/g/b colour, the screenshots seem to suggest only 5 or 6 bits per colour.
Hopefully this is just a software glitch, though you said you already tried factory reset / wipe, could it be a loose cable wire somewhere or maybe a problem with the screen to mainboard connector?

On my sgs, there is a green colour attached to to the grey colours, I can see it really good when using Screen test app on the gray scale screen, all grey is sort of green!

Just got a brand new device. Used it for about an hour, then the exact same thing happened - out of the blue.
Any possible home-front solutions? Having to take it to be serviced is a PITA for me ATM.
Mine definitely seems to have banding in the video player control pane before the video playback starts. Can someone please post a screenshot of how it should be? I haven't seen the banding issue anywhere else except the battery charging indicator when charging the phone when it's turned off. And as far as I remember they were always like that.
So can someone please post a screenshot of how it should be for me to compare.
I have the same problem appeared after upgrading to Froyo. Brightness increased (even it is high in the lowest setting) and color saturation also increased. As a result, i see bandings or lines where a color gradient exist. I added an example photo from "Samsung Apps" page. You can easily see bandings on the bottom. I see such things in a PC screen if color adjustment is not optimum. So there must be a way to adjust screen saturation and brightness by a software through registry i think. It seems like a software problem. I think it is a very rare problem, i found few people on the web complaining about it. Mostly HTC Desire, which use also Samsung Amoled screen, users complaining about it.
I did everything said on forums to solve it but no way. I flashed many different roms both eclair and froyo, use a software given in HTC forums to change RGB color, changed color settings through video player etc. Nothing worked. Please help

I looked at ur pic. I honestly dont see any problem with it. What is this banding ur talking about?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Bottom of the screen, around "2010 Samsungs Electronics". This part should be a smooth color transition from blue to transparent but there are circular lines between colors. Is your screen the same.
Another example. The one on the phone looks white on the upper part where a color transition from dark to light black exist and there are visible lines. But normally it was looking like the other picture (taken from notebook screen) before this problem
ah on that screen i already see 8 shades of blue, most be around 4k colors .. bummer though, it's normally a software problem, doubt that a conector has come loose. (but possible if it's a pimped up composite plug with Y/Pr/Pb, .. eh still impossible cos it's getting decoded before that)

Screen Calibration for Colors

Is it possible to change the screen color calibration other than just changing from Dynamic to movie / professional modes?
The biggest thing that bothers me about the Note 3 is that whites appear a cool blue, and not white especially on web pages and Facebook. Is this something that is possible to fix with a calibration or kernel or something?
There was a kernel for the galaxy s3, note 2 and s4 that had a very deep settings menu for color calibration (perseus kernel), but it only worked on exynos based devices, the dev said it was not possible for him to do the same thing on the ones with snapdragon because of a driver issue.. I will wait sit for this, at least you have a cool screen, mine is green and horrible. Let me suggest "filter my screen" on the play store , its just a filter, and it ruins pure blacks, but with it on the whites are decent now.
Thanks. Does anyone know anything else that may work?
Open the settings menu, tap the device tab and scroll down to accessibility. Turn on "color adjustment". Now you are suppose to tap the color box that closest represents the box shown. You can repeat this process over by pressing menu.

Odd look and lack of brightness -- Vivid vs Natural display

My 10+ arrived yesterday and so far I've been impressed with two exceptions. As mentioned in other threads my finger sensor leaves a lot to be desired but my point of this thread was about an odd look my screen had. It was not bright and sharp like my 8+. There was a yellowish tint. I went into the 8+ to see if there were any differences in my display settings and I fixed the problem my by changing the screen mode on the 10+ from natural to vivid (Settings > Display > Screen Mode). The options were different on the 8+ but on the newer version it's one of the two, vivid or natural.
Just wanted to share that in case anyone else is having the same issue.
One question. My 10+ came with the screen protector and I've never had one. I assume they take away at least a small percentage of your brightness and clarity? I'm tempted to remove mine to see.

Keep in mind that Natural should follow the sRGB color space. Most displays have default colors that are too cold/blue (high color temperature, and I know, it's counter intuitive but that's what they call it ). Relative to "colder screens", sRGB will seem warmer / more yellow. But it's also much more accurate as far as color representation goes, and should be closer to what you see with your eyes unfiltered by sunglasses. This assumes whatever image you're looking at is also taken with neutral colors and not over saturated.
I usually calibrate all my screens to have more accurate colors, at the expense of that "pop" you can get with AMOLED screens.

That "pop" is exactly what I'm looking for so would you suggest I stick with vivid? I understand what you're saying about the colors but it's not an area I'm real familiar with. I'm just not seeing a brightness on the level I prefer and yes I have it set as high as possible.

Yeah, you'll want to leave it on vivid if you want that "pop". I also know that when my current Google Pixel got the Pie update, the auto-brightness was a bit finicky at first, as it's an "intelligent" brightness and it takes a few days to learn your preferences for the right brightness based on the lighting conditions. So that might be the case with the S10 as well, and I should be picking up mine tomorrow so then I'll know more about how it works exactly.
Also I think I read somewhere that the S10 will only get very bright in direct sunlight if it's set to auto-brightness. You apparently can't set it to that level manually. So perhaps play around with that a bit.
Any news on this? I just picked up my s10 plus and the screen has a yellow tint and seems less bright compared to my note 8...not sure if I just ask for a replacement. Thanks!
I always run mine on Vivid and WQHD and as expected the S10 is spectacular

im surprised there isnt adaptive display mode like on the previous models this really made different colours pop. mine seems to have a bit of an orange tint
I also found it too yellow.. Go at the advanced settings and reduce the green close to the minimum and the red just a little bit. It will look white again..
Because of the sun light some people find yellowish colours more natural..
Yeah the whites don't look good on the s10 compared to my note 8
Just compared mine with different demo models and they all seem a bit more 'natural'. No need to swap it for a different one, allthough they all are a bit different...one more leaning towards blue white and the other to yellowish white.
Well coming from pixel 3, to me, Colors looks natural. S10 screen is crisp and clear. Nobody can best sammy when it comes to screens. I am using natural mode. Vivid mode is having too much pop.

So even I had the same thoughts when I got hands on my S10+. Was worried the screen had some issues and hence went to the Samsung store and compared with the display phones - there was no difference between what I had and the display ones. However, when I compared with my S8+ I found that S8+ display was more blue-ish than S10+. The response from Samsung was that by default Samsung had toned down the blue light in the S10 screens for improved readability.
However, I feel the colors had lesser contrast in my S10+ screen compared to my S8+ and that is a bummer - at least for me!

I have found that applying "blue light filter" and setting it's effect to minimum fixes the color saturation and reverses the washed out look on images. Another way is to go into visibility enhancements -> color adjustment -> then either apply a filter there like "Tritan" or "personalize color" and follow the steps. To me I cannot see any difference between the above steps or just simply applying "blue light filter" set to minimum. To me both look to correct the color saturation about the same.
I hope this helps you!
Hopefully they fix this soon!
Cheers ?

Hi guys. I think you might be encountering the display saturation bug.
The Galaxy S10 (USA Unlocked version in my case) has a peculiar bug in the display. When a photo is fully opened in an app such as Gallery, the photo's saturation becomes muted and cold (even with the display set to vivid and warm). It's very apparent with skin tones. I first noticed this when comparing identical photos between my S10 and S9.
If you hit the app switcher, the minimized card displays the photo with the correct saturation. Maximizing the app, causes the image to immediately turn washed out and Muted. This is appears to be a system wide bug, as it shows up in Gallery, Instagram and other places. I could not get this to show up with a screen recorder, since it's the display changing the image. I recorded it with my camera, but it appears very subtle. In person it is very obvious. I don't know how many are affected by this bug, but I'm seeing others talk about it on forums. Appears to affect all galaxy S10 models.
For a temporary fix, you can enable the blue light filter and set it to the MINIMUM setting. This will display photos in the Gallery and other apps with the correct color saturation. Hopefully Samsung will address this with a software update!

[POLL] Are you affected by the "red tint at low brightness" issue

It has been reported - XDA, ZenTalk - by multiple Rog2 owners, that their displays show red discoloration under certain circumstances.
The two contributing factors seem to be screen refresh rate (higher freq -> more red tint) and brightness (lower brightness -> more red tint).
Steps to reproduce the issue:
1) Go to a dark room.
2) Add "Screen Frequency" toggle in the status bar, and lower the status bar to show the toggles;
3) Lower the brightness to 40%;
4) use the toggle to swap frequency from 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz.
If your unit is affected, the color of the dark grey areas on screen will increasingly shift toward red as you increase the refresh rate.
Is your phone showing these symptoms? Please share your experience by participating in the poll above.
Same here, hope its just SW issue and will be fix on future updates ?
Yep, I find it most annoying when i'm in a dark room and viewing images or talking over video whatsapp, the pics/vid colours are really dark and reddened, especially skin tones...
to all who answer the poll, pls take photos from the display with another phone and tell us their varriant
specially those who said no!
it seems like my phone doesnt have 40% brightness rofl.
it goes from 39 to 41.
but i dont have that issue with under 40% anyway..
Just a quick question, has anyone tried with an actual grey background? I get the same effect on the screen when the top bar is pulled down but if i look at a grey color palette i do not have this issue. I think its just a issue with the color overlay that asus has set on the top and bottom bar.
Yeah, the red tint is there under 30% brightness at 90 and 120hz, but not as intense as in the picture ?
Only noticeable with nightlight on for me. At lower than lowest brightness controlled by app.
I've only noticed it with the pull down quick menu. but TBH im 50% or above brightness anyways. You can tell the oled panel is red biased - something thats common in industry with oled manufacturers. Samsung went through a yellow and blue bias, Sony had a red tint issue.. Doesnt really phase me as the phone is otherwise sublime
Look, I am telling you, all the units have the same effect.
Those who voted no they are liers that are practising fanboyism or they don't have the phone at first place.
Anyway, if you cannot get along with that then I advise you to return it/sell it and get a device from another brand.
change Theme will help maybe other dark theme.
because white theme not that effect
if anybody vote No, I think they don't use dark theme with orange color.
Yeah there is no lottery here as all displays are affected. Just people in denial or people with the wrong settings who say they have no red tint
not sure if it's just me, but mine seems to have more red tint when the refresh rate is set to 90hz compared to 120, and no red tint at all in 60hz

You have to take photos of your screen with another phone or camera.
Screenshots are grabbed directly from the frame buffer of the phone, i.e. they show what the phone intends to display, not what it actually looks like on screen.
So in my device its like this,
at 0-30% brightness with dark mode on
60hz - 40% red tint, 90hz - 10% red tint, 120hz - 30% red tint on grey backgrounds .
at 40% brightness and after the red tint goes away.
so weirdly there is less red tint in 90hz mode.

Firstly what firmware version you on? Maybe more details would help
1. I don't get a screen full of green, but the screen is slightly brightened with a greenish brightness. I assume this is the issue. Most phones (inc Oneplus phones) with optic FPS do this as the bright green FPS light also partly turns on other oled pixels. Some other manufacturers lower the brightness of the finger print sensor light, which then has the effect of inaccurate print reads. I dunno, I like how fast the FPS unlocks the phone, its one of the quickest - if the slightly brightened screen is the sacrifice, I'm ok with that :good:
2. I can't replicate this
3. I can't replicate this
4. Why do you need to disable these core google apps?
5. Red tint is hardware - its been slightly improved with the latest WW-16.0631.1910.35 firmware, but this oled screen has a dominant red gamut - every oled screen has a dominant colour (either blue, red or green) so just have to deal with it. :good:

I dunno, I like how fast the FPS unlocks the phone, its one of the quickest - if the slightly brightened screen is the sacrifice, I'm ok with that :good:

:good:
