Question TWRP/Nandroid backup for Pixel 5a? - Google Pixel 5a

I have my Pixel 5a rooted using Magisk -- which works great...
Would like to get TWRP working so I can do nandroid backups.
Do any of the existing TWRP images? If not when might one be available for the 5a?
Meanwhile I have my backups relatively covered with a combination of:
- Google backup (lowest common denominator)
- SwiftBackup (scheduled to run once a day with the images rsync'ed to my server
- Titanium Backup (though I use this more for legacy)
- My own daily rsync copy of the /data, /sdcard, /system/, /cache, /persist partitions (actually I use BackupPC which allows me to dedup backups and recreate all the perms, timestamps, etc.)
I assume that this is relatively equivalent to a nandroid backup
Overkill for sure...

I attempted porting TWRP but after getting lots of arcane errors from an arcane build system I gave up on that.

I got the 4a and went ahead and got the 5a as well with the Fi subscription for ****s and gigs. I love the size of the 4a but hate how cheap it feels. Using that as my daily with DU rom. 5a feels much better but I wish it was smaller. I'm hoping we get some good development for it but I feel like it will be sparse coming so soon after the 4a/5g/5 and the 6 right around the corner.
I realize none of this is really helpful but maybe somebody will see this and has some info about anything in the works for the 5a. Here's to hoping.

There is a custom Lineage Rom for the pixel 5a and that's it for right now but the device is fairly new. I'm sure there will be other roms for it eventually.

I don't know anything about it except the fact that the pixel 5a is the same as the pixel 4a as that the system partition is NOT big enough for twrp and it's installed through ramdisk on the 4a with a custom kernel that supports compression so that it can be big enough and since Android 11 came along, the boot.img is now a part of the recovery which makes buiding a workable twrp much harder, even more so with a/b devices.

anyone tried this?
tempted to give it a go now!
Edit:
Just flashed it... BEWARE.. will erase all data / system / user data and 'unroot' your phone. When i rebooted, the padlock had gone and the phone was unrooted. Had to reflash cwm and restore backup.
and when rooting it back, it will ERASE SD CARD... so
BACKUP EVERYTHING FIRST =)
Not bad though, runs vanilla 2.3.3 with disk encryption and option to encrypt 'sd card', no other mods I could tell.

I've tried. Not bad.
Anyone else tried this that can provide some more information?
Is it a new rom?
After using this for a week I have to say I'm impressed.
Its fast, battery is good and has been completely stable so far.
Hopefully there will be more modules coming soon. I dont think it would work using Netarchy kernel or similar.
Anyone know how I can get a tun.ko file that will work?

Cyanogenmod 13??????

Will cyanogenmod 13 come to the kindle fire hd 7 (Tate)?
Yep, @BuQQzz and I (mostly him, haha) are working on porting CM13 to this device, as well as the 8.9" (jem). I'm not exactly sure when a usable build will be uploaded, but it should be in the not-so-distant future.
I'm running 12.1 on mine and even though the rom is very lean the Kindle is always running slow. I have 2 questions concerning this. One, based on what you're seeing so far during development, is the rom running at a better speed?
Two, what steps can I take to make sure I am running the best I can for the best results?
The system was wiped completely. I did a super clean install, I've made a backup and moved it to my desktop (in case I need to push it), and I usually only do an update about once every two weeks. Mainly due to the fact that I have to jump through all the hoops of reinstalling Google Play Services, Google games, and the SuperSU beta.
If there are other things you think may help please give suggestions and advice. I can add external storage, however at the moment I do not have an SD card in the slot. To me since storage and RAM are two different things I am thinking it would make little difference to add external storage since I have very few apps downloaded on it.

1) The ROM currently doesn't even boot up at this point. It's an issue with SELinux that we're working to resolve.
2) I would suggest that you avoid having too many apps on the device - doing so tends to make app optimization take longer (which usually occurs after an OTA or a manual cache wipe). Also, try not to have too many xposed modules or other android mods on your device - if modules or frameworks conflict with each other or the base system, system stability and speed can be negatively impacted. As for the issues with having to reflash gapps, xposed, etc. after an OTA, I use CM Downloader (which is available on the Play Store) to automatically handle flashing other zips after the CM base ROM.
You're right - storage and RAM are two different things. Unless you're low on storage and/or need to share files between multiple devices, I wouldn't see a need for an SD card. Also, I'm fairly certain that the 2012 HD 7" (tate) doesn't have an SD card slot (are you using a 5th generation device?). This discussion is for the 2012 HD 7" models, not for other (or later) models; flashing a ROM meant for another device can and most likely will brick your kindle.

I stand corrected. There is no external slot. I was mistaking the back logo panel as a possible external storage cover. My son has had the device for quite some time and he asked dad (me) to give it the "works". The device was running atrocious and much slower than it does now. I've had it for about 2 months and after installing the 2nd bootloader, rooting, twrp recovery..... You get the idea, I had it very stable and clean. It's been running quite well on 12.1 and I am pleased to see development still happening for such an older device.
As far as apps go, I have only installed what he likes. A few games (about 4) and a couple of social ones like Instagram and facebook for him. The real slowdown was actually with Facebook continually not updating and having errors. A recent reboot has fixed that. It also appears that the occasional reboot is actually helping the rom settle in.
I had previously tried the CyanDelta Updater on the play store and it didn't work well. I will now give CM Downloader a try to see of that keeps me from having to reflash the GApps and other apk that seem to force close that I had previously mentioned.
Thanks for the quick response and advice.

If you go into the CM Downloader app settings, you should be able to add in the zips (maximum of 6) you want flashed after a ROM update. Once that's complete, all you need to do is download an update and initialize the install process from within the app, and it'll handle flashing the zips. From personal experience on CM nightlies for jem (the 8.9" version), I tend to see stability break down after about 24 hours of device uptime without a reboot, so reboots do help significantly.

Currently, the generated zips take longer than cm12.1 to flash (but they still flash successfully). As for a functional ROM, that hasn't happened yet - it refuses to boot after about 5 seconds. last_kmsg says it's an SELinux issue.

Magisk MultiROM Support

https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69226527&postcount=6
Was this ever fully achieved? Fully systemlesz MultiROM support / module support with Magisk? I have always wanted to see the day that TWRP got a bit of a work over and addition of the possibility of a flashable addon for MultiROM support for what phones that would be supported. I brought this up to my team and also the OrangeFox and a few other groups hoping it might become something. But im getting OT here.. so lets -> back to Magisk chatter.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Usually i do my fair share of extensive research before asking such but lately I have been overworked and haven't the time to pour over pages and pages as usual.
Thanks!
I've done tons of reading, can't seem to find the answer to this question either

Hey Buddy, Long time no see... Since the android forums days i guess it was.
I ended up here because i was searching to see if there was perhaps a magisk module to enable this as a test feature? or if there was a bit better documentation on how this would work...
My team and I have been deving for some alcatel mtk devices, and we are searching for info to either add multi/dual boot functions to our personal recovery builds, or find or build some other sort of solution.
I actually stumbled right to here.
So say, @topjohnwu would you happen to be able to drop any of us a plug-in module or a quick how to for those of us who ARE GOING TO KILL DEVICES ANYWAY playing with this stuff?
I'd definitely beta test any of that, @topjohnwu I was taking apart your Magisk and reversing/modding parts of it to accomplish some dificult things in one of my devices and wanted to compliment your clean style in your scripts.
I was thinking to my self that day though ,
"Could I change some things to make an option to switch between several GSI system.img stored on sdcard thats partially formatted ext4... and perhaps have it ask me which slot.." When thinking about it, if I make several 4-5 GB ext4 partitions on my sdcard I should be able to write a system.img to each of those partitions, then have magisk take a user selection and boot the system from that partition....{speaking about an arm a-only device}
it would become more difficult with system-as-root though wouldn't it? I'd think it would be possible to do some sort of fstab muckery where the script looks for these partitions, u choose 1, it sets a variable, and restarts the boot process with that VAR set to boot the system on chosen partition....
IDK I bet Mr John WU probably has it already worked out but these are just a few of the things we are messing with over at my support/development group on Telegram..

Very good write up on Tue thoughts of how one could achieve what we have in thought at this moment. Perhaps he can. When we get around to building recoveries for the Schokk Turbo and Schokk Turbo XL along with more solid verions for the Orbic Wonder and Orbic Slim I want to get the team working on a custom verison or plugin. That and or EFI Droid which is might interesting... Here check it out - https://efidroid.org/ - https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/poll-recovery-t3942781 .

G9+ & Adaway: Ads show up

I have two G9+ phones, both rooted with Adaway installed. One has the stock ROM (Android 10) & the other has LineageOS 18.1.
On the phone with Lineage there are no ads when running a particular game. The same version of the game on Moto Android 10 has ads.
There is some app I don't understand called Moto GameTime that appeared when I started the game but I have disabled it. (I tried to move GameTime out of system using system/app mover but I got an error: "Could not remount /system".)
Still, Google ads appear with the stock ROM despite having Adaway.
Everything looked ok in Adaway. It tells me its three sources are up to date. When I try to reload & reinstall hosts from those sources I get an error: "Unable to copy hosts file to /system partition. Please check Magisk systemless module is enabled the reboot." (Magisk Manager shows Magisk 23.0 is installed.)
Something is causing problems that seem to involve lack of access to the /system partition. I don't know if that is related to the appearance of ads on the stock ROM, but any thoughts? How can I fix this?
As I've stimulated no response here, I took the ugly step of wiping the phone, flashing the experimental LineageOS and restoring everything from backup (not a fully successful process because the data for certain apps was not backed up by Super Backup & Restore).
At least there are now no ads getting through onto the phone.
The issue you are having is related to stock Android 10. It does not allow you to make any changes to the system partition, as it won't allow you to mount it as r/w. There is a workaround for it (currently in development stages). It's a flash able zip script that dumps the super partition "fixes" it and flashes it back. Your phone must have the bootloader unlocked and be rooted for it to work. It currently works for A only devices without any issues, but is throwing an lpmake error 73 for mysterious/unknown reasons, but a fix is in the works. I will post a link when I get home.
I assume the phone is rooted with Magisk which is a systemless root method. Even with older devices /system remains unmodified. All changes are only overlays/modules managed by the Magisk App.

I'm glad you got it figured out. The data issue, along with many other bugs will be rectified any day now with the new release. The issue you are having with LOS 18.1 is because at the time of development the kernel for A11 hadn't been released by Moto yet. However, they did finally release it a little under 2 weeks ago. So the new version of it will be much much better. It will be linked to the same link I posted. It's just a matter of time now, and not much of it.

Can you still use the S pen on an GSI?
If you are happy with it being a generic stylus then yes.
That means, No Samsung Features
There should be a root app that enables those
I'll look for it
As of now just a generic stylus
PS. Using the SPen now at the time of writing

Thanks! That's very interesting! I am currently trying to work out if I should buy the S8. I have been using a very comparable tablet, Xiaomi pad 5 pro, in the past several months. I absolutely hate MIUI (Xiaomi OS). Although my Pad 5 is rooted there are so many things you are not allowed to do... So I am on a Pixel Experience Plus GSI, but you can't use the (expensive) Xiaomi pen. On the whole I am still better off with a GSI than MIUI for the sake of my sanity. But I really want to have the digital pen functionality. The Xiaomi pen on any GSI isn't recognised at all. You can't even use it as a capacitive pen. The S pen sounds like more adaptable. I am hoping One UI isn't as restrictive as MIUI, but having the possibility of a GSI would be always helpful.

Stands for "Generic System Image".
Can anybody confirm a few GSI ROMs work with this tablet? I'm disappointed there is so little development on it, and I want to be sure I can side step all the privacy issues in the stock ROM. Andy Yan's lineageos gsi works well on my SM-T510 TAB A for example.
Also, any pointers to Android 13 ROMs is appreciated.
Currently running the PE 13 Alpha build on my Tab S8 Plus and most things work perfectly fine. The only issues are Bluetooth, stereo audio (only mono at the moment), and brightness (but manually setting the max brightness level in PHH settings to 1.0 seems to fix the issue). The fingerprint scanner also doesn't work yet. AOSP mods also help fix issues like rotation and resizing of UI elements (not necessary but personal preference.)
Seems most issues with Tab s7 series match the tab s8 series as well so I recommend checking out that thread as well for more info.

Any photo, video of this rom how it looks like? What are the benefits of installing? Are faster, better battery? In pixel android 13, they managed to run windows 10 because of virtualization capabilities of Android 13. Is it possible with our tablet and this rom, if anyone tried it?
Thanks,
Hi. I'd like to add to the former questions: is it possible to add a generic ROM to a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ bought in China? Does anyone have any insight on this? Has anyone tried it? Thanks.

Does newer PE 13 GSI getting better in terms of Bluetooth audio?
Hi all,
I'm going to buy a TAB S8+ but I'm not sure if and which GSI roms could be ok for it.
I mean, if I well understood, GSI roms should works will all Project Treble devices so every GSI roms should be ok.
Is it correct ?
Many thanks for your reply.

If you need other than original rom, perhaps think twice. There isn't custom rom, also i don't read much for gsi rom.
Hi all,
I would like to try to flash a GSI butI'm not sure to have clearly understood the instruction given....
As I'm doing the first steps into flashing mods and to avoid to do a mess, can someone kindly better explain the flashing above and all stuff ?
Many many thanks !

Could not find a straightforward reference on this piece but it appears to be included in the TWRP instructions as "vbmeta_disabled_R.tar"

The vendor.img (Vendor can be extracted from thesuper.img. You then use use simg2img then lpunpack to extract it)

This needs to come from the original Samsung ROM image, if I'm not mistaken. galaxyfirmware.com has these, have to make sure you choose the correct model for your tablet.

There appears to be one included in the TWRP thread as well which goes into the USERDATA slot in Odin. Is it this: https://github.com/ianmacd/multidis...ter/META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary ?

* A neutralized vbmeta is preferred over an empty vbmeta, but it is really your choice.

Don't really understand what this means, can you point to a good reference?

Flash time
Do this in TWRP
Set the block devices to r/w so you can flash images.
# blockdev --setrw /dev/block/dm-0
# blockdev --setrw /dev/block/dm-1
# dd if=<GSI image here> of=/dev/block/dm-0 bs=1m
# dd if=<vendor image here> of=/dev/block/dm-1 bs=1m

If the image is sparsed
Code:
# simg2img <sparsed GSI image here> /dev/block/dm-0
Click to collapse
IF it's sparse, it should be a .simg file, right?

NOTE: If you flashed vendor in this step, DO NOT REBOOT.
Flash Multi-Disabler to disable encryption of internal storage.
If you flashed the vendor.img when flashing GSI, flash Multi-Disabler again.

Apologies for the late response, lost access to the account for a while.
So to sum it up, yes a sparse image has to be a .simg.
A neutralized vbmeta is a vbmeta given to you back from magisk to be flashed. Do not use the one given in the twrp post if you are over android 12 and just have magisk fix it or patch it.
And multidisabler should be written in the terminal in twrp as it is included with twrp.

Hi all,
I would like to try to flash a GSI butI'm not sure to have clearly understood the instruction given....
As I'm doing the first steps into flashing mods and to avoid to do a mess, can someone kindly better explain the flashing above and all stuff ?
Many many thanks !

I am going to write a new guide since this one was my first guide I've ever written and it is messy too.
