Welcome aboard officially

Hi I'm just a guy on the internet. I am self taught, adhd person and I care about free speech and personal ownership/responsibility. I dont like tech monopolies selling the illusion of ownership at $1400 for a device you are just renting space on. Root or nothing when it comes to ownership. If you cant get to root get as close as you can. I recently made a full switch to Debian 10, Mac Google and Microsoft can EAD I'm not giving them another dime, unless it gives me the opportunity to stick it to them or wake someone up.
I have a few cloud servers running Debian in various locations and names always on and some are switched on when needed. I like Inexpensive hardware and I am all about bootstrapping anything possible.
My experiences are exploring:
Arduino
BTC
Raspberry Pi
RepRap
3D Printing
CNC -GRBL
Debian 10
Wordpress
LAMP
MAMP
WAMP
XMPP
Android
RedSn0w 2016-17ish iPhone 3g

TILT only for business users in your opinion?

I'm a college student and I really like gadget type devices. Do you think the Tilt is overkill for a college student? I know the iPhone is supposed to be the best for college students and stuff, but I don't like the limited nature of apple's products.
Do you think the AT&T Tilt should really be only for professional users, and if so what do you reccomend instead that does have WiFi (a key to my purchase!)
Thanks guys.

i guess it's your opion, i'm sure there's plenty who will tell you the Tilt/TyTY II is better for college students, it doesn't really matter what it's suppose to be for it's what you want. All the iPhone really is, is just an ipod w/a phone feature in my opion, how is that the best for college students.

If you are a Mac guy than it is hard to go wrong with the iPhone. Just remember it is more of a music player than a smartphone.
Yeah I guess I mean more popular among college students.
I am not a mac guy at all, so that's why I'm thinking about the Tilt. Just wish it wasn't so bulky!
I say go for it if you can get a good deal. it's not over kill if you use it right?
I'm only in high school and i love my Tilt. So it's really for anybody.
I am not a business user at all, although it is a huge help in keeping up with to do lists, appointments etc... It seems to me the calendar functions would be ideal for a college student, to keep track of exam dates etc.
There are so many FUN things you can do with the Tilt too
Mine is full of music, games and other goodies which would definitely not fall under the business category.
The only thing is, I believe the iPhone is more of an as-is type phone. You take it out of the box and you're ready to go. The Tilt, you will want to customize to your liking, which in my opinion is the fun part. And here, on xda you can find so many wonderful threads, and helpful people that you will soon become obsessed with tweaking your phone, lol. You can spend hours on just how you want your Today screen to look, let alone how you want it to function
Besides, the Tilt can do everything the iPhone can do, and more
yea i just got out of hs and i love my tilt so as long as ur not like slow and get complicated easily your cool
i am a college student and i run and manage a online ecommerce business and i wouild say that even if i dididnt i would still love the tilt
haha im actually a college student and i love my kaiser! xD.. im waiting for the qualcomm's drivers for 3d acceleration, u know, games and more.
in my opinion, its for everyone if you like it.. and if you know how to use it xD .. im owner also of a wizard and a shift.. xD..
I'm jobless, hopefully a Masters student by the coming September , and I sue the TyTyn2, I dont have appointments to keep, nor do I use the Document editors etc... Then you might ask what I need the TyTYn2 for? We'll I'm a BE in Mech, aspiring to become a Programmer, hobby programmer at the moment actually, the good thing is I can run J2SE apps on it, theres a C# compiler for it, and its hackable, coming from the Linux(Motorola EZX E6) side of things.
Regards,
Akshay
I'm a college student as well and I specifically bought the Tilt for school! It's got wi-fi so I can check email and all of that on campus for free and the 3G if I need some speed to download a file while I'm on BART for school. Also, the calendar options are great! I use it to keep track of projects and class meetings and the like. Office support is awesome too so I don't have to drag my laptop out when I want to work on an english essay for example. I'm currently trying to get a C++ compiler to work on it(getting my AS Degree in CS) so i can do work on the go. Also, in my opinion, Kaiser way better than the iPhone. No 3G on the iPhone, its a closed source system mainly(at the moment at least) and one big disadvantage is no replaceable battery so if you run out or forget to charge it, you're a goner. Hope this helps!
@beret
Going OT for a bit, heres a C# compiler if you need it. Forget where I got it from though . Hope it helps.
i think that having a pda phone is a great thing for a college student. i used to use my phone so much during school, i used to access my schools wifi, download ppt presentations, open up teachers powerpoint slides, send email...and even take notes in MS word. the one thing that i never got around to was buying one of the bluetooth keyboards like the iGo. If i would have had that, it would have made note taking a lot easier. In all honest, my phone was my email/phone/mp3 player/notebook/web browser all in one. Helps keep you organized, and a hell of a lot easier to lug around compared to even the smallest notebook. And really, you still keep a lot of the functionality.
Hey!
If you want to send and receive MMS messages, which can be pretty popular on the college circuit, I'll bet, buy the Tilt as you can't receive MMS with the JesusPhone
The reason I picked the Tilt over the iPhone, was EXACTLY because it is more
geared toward business, whereas (in my opinion) the iPhone is geared more toward multimedia. The iPhone is a great phone, and fantastic at what it does, but, I live & work in a Windows environment, and having pocket excel, word & outlook is a must for my needs.

Well, the iPhone has third party software also, very similiar to Windows Mobile, matter of fact it has a wide range of open source software that installs with just a click. It is great if you a more than average phone user, the iPhone is great. It allows customization just like the Kaiser.
But if you want your phone to be an actual PPC, join us here at XDA. I used both phones, I however prefer my Kaiser, because it like the "freedom", I hate apple's unlocking policy, and unrelease SDK.
Well, WM Phone beats iPhone with 3G, and if it applies, a hardware keyboard.

Well you can send and receive MMS with the iPhone with the help of third party software which is still freeware. I just hate to be bias in helping him decide what phone to get.
The nice thing about the tilt is that you can flash other roms on it and not have to worry about your sim being unlocked or locked or what hacker came out with what app, etc.
The guys hacking the iphone are great but I don't want my phone functionality being dictated by a hobby hacker...I'd rather have my extra functionality dictated by that.

Web site creators?

Hey-
A friend of mine wants to build a website for his small business. He has a domain name registered and he has a host. He just needs to build the site. He asked me if I could help/knew of any good programs that help make the job easier.
Neither of us have much code writing experience, but we both have a lot of experience using computers at a higher level than the "norm".
He would prefer something he could run on his linux box, but would settle for something on Windows XP.
Any suggestions?
Hi, i would use: Microsoft Expressions 3
another good program is: Serif Webplus X2 / X4
wordpress is also an option it's easy for users to update themselves even if they are not
good at html or j-scripts and php
Thanks for the responses guys! We will take a look at those programs. I have heard good things about wordpress for us html deprived folk that have good overall skills. It looks like a good match to me(free, easy, good support community and powerful enough for what we are doing). Of course, we are going to take a look at the other suggestions, Expressions 3 is something I am familiar with, but we are not looking to spend any money if possible (not pros, just helping a friend). Not real familiar with Serif other than I know the name and I know it is a solid option.
If you go to
Students4Software you can get:
Microsoft Expressions Studio 3 for £20 / 50
all ligit
I'd look at e107.
It's a bit technical to setup, but there's a wiki and a IRC Channel, for help.
Requires, virtually no coding (unless you need to fix bugs), and offers a lot of features.
Dave
Well it all depends on the complexity of the website in question. Is it mostly just content or will you need database interactions involved? Will the site have a member base?
If it's just mostly content, any html editor (Visual Web Developer, Dreamweaver) should work. IF you are needing a more complex solution it's best to get a book and learn ASP.NET or PHP.. Cheaper then paying someone! =)
depends on what you want .. Wordpress is a great choice for blogs .. Drupal / Joomla if you are after a CMS.

not legit if your not a student, luckily im a student so can use that but if your not a student you don't have a right to use that site, and as a matter of fact u can get expressions studio free (if your a student) from the dreamspark project.

B&N Sued by Microsoft over Nook

First, there was the abomination of the T-Mobile/ATT proposed deal ("T&A merger" as someone suggested)...
Now, according to the AP and others:
Microsoft filed suit today against Barnes & Noble as well as the makers of its Android-based e-reader and tablet devices for patent infringement, part of its broader campaign against Google's mobile operating system...Microsoft also named Foxconn International Holdings and Inventec Corporation as defendants in the case.

Here is a Microsoft blog discussing the suit.
Thoughts?
Won't happen.
They have no case...
Among the patents MS claims are being infringed on :
• Give people easy ways to navigate through information provided by their device apps via a separate control window with tabs;
• Enable display of a webpage’s content before the background image is received, allowing users to interact with the page faster;
• Allow apps to superimpose download status on top of the downloading content;
• Permit users to easily select text in a document and adjust that selection; and
• Provide users the ability to annotate text without changing the underlying document.
Completely and totally BS. You've got that in a bajillion different products out there.

Yeah those are just software features, I'm pretty sure I have never heard a patent lawsuit working like this
What a great time to be a lawyer..
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
what I dont understand for software is that if you are have a feature in your product that essentially does the same thing as someone else's software but the underlying code is completely different is considered patent infringement. I know this is an extreme example but what if the ford motor company was awarded a patent for anything the worked by turning wheels? I mean different car companies where allowed to have their cars but each had different engines under the hood. since i am not even close to a lawyer or someone who knows their way around code I always thought that the patents that a company can get for a software feature seemed shaky. but then when i was in a class for scientific patents, the business guys stressed that you needed to make your patent as broad and generic as you can get because then you can sue anyone who was able to create something you didnt think about that might be remotely related to your patent. I think they followed that up with a cha ching!
To help companies address Android’s ongoing infringement, we’ve established an industry-wide licensing program. Last year, HTC took a license covering its Android-based smartphones, confirming the viability of our license-first approach.

Way to screw everyone, HTC. I said a year ago when this happened "Great, this will just validate their bull****" and it clearly has.

Micrososft is joining the lowest of the low in filing this patent infringment suit.
I understand why they're doing it, though. The Personal Computer is dying, and Microsoft makes the guts that go into it. Mark my words: 10 years from now we'll all be using tablets with simple, intuitive UI's and very little need for OS maintenance and configuration. The PC will go back to being a hobbyist tool, or something you use when you're at work.
Microsoft is trying to forestall this future, but it's like putting up a parasol to hold back a tsunami. Good luck with that one, Microsoft.
The future OS wars will be fought between Apple and Google (with Google probably the eventual winner). 10 years from now Microsoft will look like IBM, a company everyone knows of but few people can actually say what they do (after selling their PC line to Lenovo).
In my personal opinion, as great as my tablet is, it will never replace a mouse and keyboard. Nevermind that even when I'm at home (not just work), I design all the time, which needs precise accuracy and fast processor speeds. This is fine for music, angry birds, and casual web browsing, but tablets are made as a suppliment to PCs, not the other way around.
As far as the lawsuit goes, I can think of pretty much every smart phone and tablet in the world with those features. Microsoft is feeling the heat in this market. They're realizing that they're even being beat by ereaders, and they are simply sore loosers trying to ride on the coattails of someone else's success. And in this frustration, they found the company with the least chance of being able to defend itself well in court, and went to go take it out on them. Gee that sounds familiar..
Tablets are definitely content consumption devices and excellent ones at that. I don't think a tablet will ever beat a PC as far as content creation goes.
I also agree that right now, a tablet is not a desktop/laptop replacement. However, we already have Bluetooth keyboard "docking stations" for tablets that turn them into rudimentary laptops, so it's not hard to imagine them also gaining external Bluetooth mouse support when precision is required. More than anything what's happening is potential erosion of Microsoft's stranglehold on the desktop by OS-X (via both Mac OS and iOS) and Linux (via Android) indirectly via what started as a smart phone revolution and has evolved into tablet computing. It's ironic that Linux is finally a viable widespread end user OS after years of trying through KDE, GNOME, etc., but instead via Android.
Given how late to the game Microsoft is on next-generation smartphones (ignoring Windows CE/Mobile phones of the past), it's not surprising that they're trying everything they can to get a foothold. I found Ballmer's comments about Apple's launch of the iPhone a few years back hilarious. If you haven't seen them, Google it and see what I mean. He pretty much said Apple introducing the most expensive handset the market had ever seen was tantamount to disaster and would be a huge flop! Bet he's wishing he'd given it a little more credence then...

I'd like to know who finds Ballmer appealing. I used to be a huge fan of Apple (used their devices at home for 14 years, now only using them at work). I can't stand Apple's arrogant vibe, retard simple iOS, and surprisingly progressively cheaper and cheaper feeling desktops (I had three in a row that fell apart quicker than the next. My last iMac lasted 3 months, no lie). However, no matter how much I don't like Apple, I cannot for the life of me see the reason why Ballmer is at the helm of the company. The man makes Jabba the Hutt look like someone I'd like to have a deep conversation with. I often find companys seem to have the biggest jack whipes representing them. How they think that's good for business is beyond me.
Ok, back on topic...

Greeetings it is I the8woodcutter!

I always thought these introductions in forums were most classy.
Lemme start off my saying that I am a white (vaaguely gray) hat defensive hacker that luvs to program, graaphic design aand tinker with my hardware.
I HAATE HATE the youtube world of FRP unlocking and I quit doing that for all my dope ppl long time ago. As it simply pisses me off. Nowadays I tinker with server software (linux exclusively, what the hell is windows?) aand I am an XMPP chat server operator (TooFast.vip). I go through a lot of operating systems aand aare quite hard on equipment. Right now I am using a small form faactor i5 Lenovo w/ DDR3 thin client aalmost mini PC with things plugged into it ^^..
I know I've been here before but google is doing whack stuff so eff them aanywaaays. Sorry for my quaaadruple aaaaaas cuz my keyboard is meh.... Hard on equipment lul.
Right now I haave been working on two Motorola phones, an XT 2002 (i think, the Sirfna) aaaaand a XT2052-1 (Moto E7 2020).
HAPPY AS EVER! I maade aa script out of the img files aaand the XML file that tells me what order to flaash the things in as and included in it the img's for my magisk_patched_boot.img and TWRP. My next mission is to get TWRP fully functional aand then tell ppl on here how I managed to do it. Since I've been watching and nobody knows much on that particular one YAY ROOOOT.
I am also a command line junky and I have an oddball youtube channel The8Woodcutter that I'm sure nobody will find spammy but perhaps boring if nothing else. Snowrunner and Eve Online are my favorite games! I am TM the Adventures in Command Line. Someday that will be very very rich with good things.
If you want to join an underground chat server place more secure than IRC (XMPP) that is where ppl like us (I assume) dwell. That's decentralized and steer you on the right path in the "hacking" and tinkering aand tech open source world please do get an account (message me and I caan add you one on TooFast.vip) get https://gajim.org for desktop windows or linux or conversations.im or blabber.im. On Gajim you can check services on my XMPP server we have chats about linux, computing, hardcore techno and/or any music, as well as aartwork and a cool semi-frequent bunch of folks. Welcome to XDA,
Such a nice intro.
Enjoy your stay!

Hi, nice to be here.

I've passed through as a viewer over the years so decided to get more involved. Most of what I read is gobbledegook to me but so much is useful, everyone should explore this site and its avenues.
I windows insider compute, I android phone and watch. I have two 4G Ticwatches having recently gained a Pro 3. My current searches have been on eSIM but I want an easy life @ 70, not to be adding one function to **** (insert your own favourite) something else. I've successfully used NFC payments since the pandemic started and that is paramount. Reading that sorting eSIM can knock out Pay is to be avoided.
Keeping up with tech follows 60 years of amateur radio, through hifi, through engineering work, through auto interest, homelife into retirement. I read tech, expect much of 6G and wearable, and hope for synthetic fuel to renew ICE - I don't want to drive vacuum cleaner tech!
Looking forward, it'll be great.
