Question Preference: Gesture Navigation or 3-Button - Google Pixel 5a

So I'm coming over from the Pixel 3 where 3-button navigation was the default. On the 5a, gesture navigation is. Still not sure how to work with it, especially when trying to move around apps like Root Explorer. So I wanted to gauge you guys thoughts and why. So, what's your go-to?

i recently got a 5a. i've been using a 3a since they came out. on the 3a i had the option of 2-button nav as well as 3-button and gesture. on the 5a i just have 3-button and gesture. i'm using gesture right now but that could change. i miss the 2-button though because in practice is was sort of a hybrid between button and gesture.

I like using the gestures. Started using them on my OnePlus and it took some time to get use to but now on my 5a they work alot faster and smoother. I like having that little bit of extra space on my screen and able to go back without having to hit a back button, just swipe from the left or right edge to center.

Gestures = Oops, oops, oops. Way too janky.

I switched back to the 3 button navigation cause I just had too many issues with gesture based nav not working right

That was my thinking as well but it's not there and I am not aware of any utility app that would turn it on. My 5a does have root currently because it's new and I wanted to explore things. Maybe 12 will have it.

You could try flashing this.

I recently switched to gesture. Took a bit to get used to but I feel like going back to 3 button would be like going back to tap typing from swiping. The size phones are now it's nice to swipe to go back from the middle of the screen instead of reaching to the bottom.

Ok, thanks! I now have the 2-button option on 5a. I appreciate your input.

I prefer 3-button and just realized that the recent apps button breaks after the OTA android 12 update, at least using Nova launcher. I hadn't thought about how often I use this to swap between a few screens, but it is really an impairment to lose it suddenly.

I started using gestures on my 2XL. It took some getting used to, but I couldn't imagine going back at this point. It's so much easier to change between open apps and go back with gestures.

i use fluid navigation gestures. it's like turning 3 button into gestures in their same location

The buttons for my device is stiff and hard to press. When I am using the phone with one hand, and when I tried to press the back button, it always touch the screen a little and it is pretty annoying. (Forgive my big thumb) :good:
I came from GS2, really like the touch sensitive keys. Doesn't need to "Press" on the keys!
hardware buttons are too hard to press as well for me. Im sure I can use to it but still they could be much more soft to press. The good think about non touch buttons is: there is no accidental press button when you hold phone in landscape position during the game

Chances are that it's due to humidity, you could simple put it in a bag of rice for 24 to 48 hours and should be fine.
Otherwise you'll need to use something like root explorer to go edit some system file. You can google it to get the exact one.

+1 to this. Install Cyanogenmod and see what your humble Cappy is really capable of.
You've two more solutions added to above ones;
1. Follow the link below. "Button Remapper", you can assign/unassign actions to your hardware buttons.

2. If you dont want to choose custom roms thenthere is an app in the Playstore called Captivate Search Button Fixer (link provided below) might fix your issue.

You can back those up, just look into Titanium Backup or some other backup apps on the Play Store.

Just a couple of little "complaints" about the phone.

First let me apologize if this is not the correct location on the forum to post this. I by am no means looking to bash the phone just had some questions that maybe some people may be able to help me with. I understand this is not Touchwiz so it is different, and these are very minor issues nothing that I could not learn to adjust to.
1) Notification drop down. Though I do like the "gesture" style notification drop down. Before I could use the finger print scanner to drop down to notification tab is there another shortcut way to make this happen similar to the finger print way on the S8+? I may be able to do in in Nova but will need to mess with it to figure it out.
2) Brightness bar. Does anyone know how to get the brightness bar to possible show up in the notification without it being pulled down all the way?
3) Home button. I can't seem to find a way to press the home button when in a full screen game app. Meaning prior I was able to press the location and then it would still work. Now I have to swipe up to show the nav bar and then press it.
4)LTE+ This is one isn't a complaint just a question about since I got the unlocked instead of Verizon it shows LTE+ vs 4G doing a quick search it seems to be ok just wanted some clarification.
Other then those few things I noticed over all I am happy the phone is a lot quick and better then my previous. Though at the same time nothing super new to really "wow" me I was already more then happy with the S8+ and the S10+ is a very good evolution. The hole punch is really not as bad as some others may have feared. The finger print does take a little time to get used to but seems to work about 85% success mostly do to slightly off placement. Having the extra cameras is great and so far a nice upgrade from my S8+. Again not really complaining but maybe there is toggle that I may have missed that could have fixed my little issues.
1. Use the swipe down gesture in nova launcher to pull it down, not as nice as FP sensor gesture i know :/
2. You can do this by checking the setting for 'Show Control on Top' when you expand the brightness control
3. If you are using the gestures for navigation you would swipe from where the home button would be if it were held in portrait, so typically on the right when gaming. just play with it.

Thanks, I actually used an an BX actions to remap the button on my S8+ decided to pay for the full feature and now I mapped it to drop down notifications so thats all set. Thanks found the control option by clicking on the arrow. As for my third the more I use both pbones it might be good to swipe up for the buttom. No more accidental presses when in full screen. So it looks like the phones grade is moving up ?. Thanks for the reply.
Pull down the notification all the way. Next to the brightness bar you will see a little down arrow, press that and there it is.

Oh, this is good to know. This is one of the reasons I switch launchers. I'm so used to swipe up anywhere for apps and down anywhere for notifications. This is even more natural to me than the fingerprint reader swipe, but of course the fingerprint reader let you do it in any app which is a big difference.
As for #4 since no one answered, the unlocked version is just being more specific. The US carriers usually replace the specific technology type (LTE, LTE+, etc) with generic "4G" branding (or 5GE if you're a jackass).
I just paid for full BXActions and I was able to remap bixby to double tap to drop the notification. Before I was happy with the free version but deff worth the extra few bucks. I can map more tap types.

Struggling to attach a single tap action to the bixby button though since whatever I try only seems to activate on a double tap. In Nova Beta 6.1 you don't need Tesla anymore, there is an option in the notification which uses the default Pie notification (numbered) system. Starting tomorrow Tesla won't be available on Playstore due to Google new restrictions.

How to disable Android Pie gestures on the Google Pixel 3
1. Install any 3rd-party launcher of your choice. This is a must because otherwise, you won’t have a launcher app left once we’re done with this tutorial!
2. Set up ADB on your PC. Here’s a tutorial we previously wrote that you should you through the process.
3. Connect your Pixel 3 to your PC and open up a command prompt/terminal in the directory where you downloaded the ADB binary. Enter the following command depending on your OS:
Windows Command Prompt
adb shell
Windows Power Shell
.\adb shell
macOS/Linux Terminal
./adb shell
4. Now, enter the following command to uninstall the Pixel Launcher from the current user.
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher
5. Now, enter this command to re-enable the stock navigation bar after reboot. This is the setting you’ll be changing by issuing the below command.
settings put secure system_navigation_keys_enabled 1
6. Reboot your Pixel 3.
7. Once you’re booted back up, you should see the original 3 button navigation bar layout and the original vertical stacked card recent apps overview.
What I did is just use Titanium Backup and freeze Pixel Launcher. After a reboot I had the old navigation back.

Everytime I get a new smartphone, one of my first steps is it to install the Nova launcher and so I have done this time. To be honest I do not know if its possible with the Pixel Launcher too, I dont think so cause the Pixel Launcher is not very configurable.
If you're using Pixel Launcher, is there any way to get four grid columns instead of five? The app name gets cut off on half of my apps, it's ridiculous. I've gone back to Nova launcher for now but I miss the system integrations that Pixel launcher has.

You have been almost applaudingly unhelpful. I'm asking what specific Bixby Remapper app worked for you

Download SideActions on apk mirror, it is an app only for Samsungs and is not yet officially supported for S23, but it is fully functional. (that's why it's not on gplay)

Is there a specific reason you are avoiding GoodLock and RegiStar (On Galaxy Store)?
These AFAIK are official Samsung Apps and work without any issues.

I can't remap the volume buttons via the RegiStar. That's why I use SideActions.
Makes sense.
A combination of both apps does not work?
RegiStar only overwrites and overrules the "long press" action only.
Double press is still controled by the normal settings options
Backtap is probably worthless for you too, because AFAIK the device needs to be unlocked before you can use that Feature...
It definitely works, but I don't see the reason to use 2 applications when 1 can do it

Just tried it and the volume keys actions are pretty cool, but the power key isn't working after following the instructions. Any idea? Thanks!
Nevermind, working now!
Is Goodlock from Samsung? Dev is registered as Goodlock. Saw they have many different little apps.
I'm looking to have more option from side buttons than open camera ^^
You need to setup Bixby first.
I use double press for flashlight (settings/advanced features/side key/double press) and press and hold for open camera(by SideActions)

Yea I guess SideActions can solve this lack of default option. I had Press and hold for power off menu and double press for camera. Is SideActions granting you access to custom Vol+/Vol- shortcurt ?
Maybe I'm a bit stupid, but nothing in this thread has worked for me.
End goal:
I. Long press the power button - Power menu
II. Double tap - Google Assistant.
What I've tried:
1. stock - can't get google assistant on double tap, only "google app"
2. RegiStar - only has setting for long press and nothing for double tap.
3. SideActions - Even after PC setup, double tap action doesn't seems to work. (free version)
What did work:
I used "Bixby Button Assistant Remapper", the first option in this article.
Hope this help someone.

I'm trying it right now and I also like the back-tap feature.
Since there are options to disable it on energy saving mode and on low battery, did you notice additional battery drain when using this app compared to before?
