Basically I want to try MacOSX and I know about VMWare so I just wanna ask what do I need to be able to 'emulate' MacOSX on my XP SP3 PC? The specs of the PC are horrific (2ghz single core, 1gb of RAM) I don't know any of the other specs or what processor etc. it is lol. So can somebody give me some links on how to get VMWare set up and where to get a copy of MacOSX ('legally' for free )
I tried searching the web but I just got confused.
I'm thinking of getting a new iMac but I'm not too sure so I want to try MacOSX before I spend mucho moniez. Thanks.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, You won't be able to use a VM on 1 core?
Also... I doubt there is a working kernel for yourCPU, Just a lucky guess though

Lol I was thinking that with my ****ty hardware it mightn't be possible. Lets just hope.
wmware should be able to run on single core i know virtualbox can so maybe try that
if you have an intel core 2 then most macs have that in so it would be compatible cpu wise although i think vmware emulates a different type of cpu so it may not work the ram may be problematic

Hahha, Okay, Althoguh I do think a VM needs it's own core to run on Also if you do get an iMac, You can always stick Windows on it, Plus... Whatever you get... It will be a huge upgrade haha

It's an AMD Athlon 64 processor if that's any good?

Haha too right! I like the iMac the way it's all just packed in to the monitor itself so no need for a tower and I'm thinking of running VMWare to game on Windows then.

*facepalm* Haha If you just want everything in one but want windows look at the Lenovo Ideacenter PC's? There are pretty decent spec for the price... Pretty nice looking and slim too, And cheaper! But ofcourse it's up to you But there are also many other AIO's if you're interested

*double facepalm* Yeah I was looking at a few other AIO's, but there's just something in my head that I've got my heart set on a iMac now. Will probably have to take out a bankloan off the parents to buy it mind you.

Highly not recommended. Tried it. It's cute, but doesn't get anywhere near Hackintosh.
Good cpu I had one in my old laptop till it got nicked but amd + apple = no apple pcs use intels I think its core 2 at the moment

Which? The AMD Athlon? I hope I can atleast run MacOSX just to give me an idea of what it's like. There aren't many Apple stores in Ireland either for whatever reason so I can't go in to an Apple store and check them out.
AFAIK the new iMac uses Intel's new Sandybridge CPU btw.

Yeah they use the Sandybridge ix 2xxxx series, Although the previous generation still used ix xxx CPU's
Yeah I had an athalon 64 and it might run to be honest I just dont know the best way would be to try it out

ubuntu is singled handedly the most supported open source OS with the largest community
Easy to find your favourite Apps alternative (you will never find the same, else they will be paid and not open source)
no need to worry about licensing
CONS
not as much popular Apps development available as Android
just browse or post some question in the ubuntu forums, you'll get answer pretty quickly

I didn't realise Ubuntu was a market platform, but I'll try and sell you if you like. If that's you in your avatar then it should be no problem
I use ubuntu all time, only using windows for games. The main reason is because it's very fast, and stays that. Windows becomes slow after time of usage. And it's much more stable.

most games i play in Ubuntu using Wine or VM session
very few games i need to boot back to Win7 to play
Linux & Ubuntu has come a loooooooooong way.
and Ubuntu keeps assimilating most of the nice features found in Android
Do you run two hd's or what is the favored set up? I run a live CD at times but never stay on it long due to compatibility issues...I'm in college and the website isn't friendly with Linux so far.

i've yet to find see a website that can not be viewed in Linux
99% pages plays & render just fine on Firefox
the other 1% (IE only pages) they run great on Google Chrome
flash & java everything runs great as well
Well I only use my computer for videos, downloading, music, coding, editing and Internet. Ubuntu has all of that for me, plus the fact it isn't a hungry fat man eating my computer. If I were a gamer though, I'd Prolly stick with windows.

Was wondering if somebody fluent in the Linux OS could help me choose a good Linux distro. Currently running LMDE, but it seems as if my laptops battery pluments. I have a high capacity 6-cell battery which usually lasts me 6-7 hours on windows. But only lasts 4 hours or less in LMDE. Anyways I'm looking for something that has just about everything working out of the box. LMDE had my WiFi drivers... my graphics drivers... which Linux is picky with my radeon GPU. My laptop is
HP Pavilion Dv6z quad edition
AMD A8 3550-MX (APU)
Radeon HD Discrete Class Graphics (I believe its a 6220g)
6GB RAM
Etc.

Try Ubuntu, I have it set as a dual boot OS on my desktop and it had most of the drivers I needed.
Ubuntu tends to run "out of the box" without any additional installs or tweaks, so you could try it. Make a live CD and check that everything is working before you install it.
Oops. I should have mentioned I tried Ubuntu 11.10 and it wouldn't display my screen turns out it doesn't like my GPU. Tried 10.04 and it worked... but hardly. Haven't tried 12 yet... might try it and see if it still does the black screen deal. Trying to stay away from fedora or RPM based distros as I hear they are a little more difficult and I'm a Linux illiterate.

Yeah I looked into that. But I also saw that people did this and their resolution was terrible. I might try it again. If I find the disk again.

I just used that to get up and running. Once I was dual-booting and able to run Ubuntu I just changed the resolution in that and it was all good.

Check out CrunchBang, haven't tried the newest build yet but it's super lightweight and snappy, it is by far my favorite distro and has been rock solid on 3 different machines for a year and a half now.

Intresting never heard of it.. then again the only ones you ever really hear of are Ubuntu and Fedora... so ill take a look at it. I understand desktops are a lot more linux friendly? Wondering if there is one that is more laptop friendly. Laptops tend to have more drivers such as Wifi bluetooth and so on and so forth. Maybe somthing like that?

I'm running it on an Acer Aspire 6920 laptop and an Asus Eee netbook, both worked great out of the box. The main thing I like is there are lots of keyboard shortcuts to open apps, really cuts down time for opening anything.

Ah my fault, completely missed where you said that, sorry 'bout that.
If you grab the "AMD64" iso image you should be fine, it's been a while but I remember running Ubuntu 9.04 on AMD with no problems, you should be fine.
Debian squeeze is very good for that sort of thing

Ok guys, maybe this question has been asked and maybe it has not. I'm typing this on the fly via mobile of course and don't have the time to scour through related forum threads which may or may not be able to help me out.
That said, I have several adapters that I use for packet injection. I have one which has an SMA port for antennas and I bought a 16dBi high gain antenna to use with another project and I am also using with this adapter.
Anyway, I woukd like to be able to use this adapter with its extended range while I'm wardriving.
I have microUSB to Female USB cables for my phone. But connecting a device does little other than power it on.
I need a script that disables the on board WiFi and installs a driver for the secondary adapter and then enables it. Or perhaps there is an app out there that makes this easier.
Anyone have any suggestions or solutions to this dilemma I'm facing?

google "pwnpad" maybe you find something you can use, also the wifi adapter they use is cheap and support packet injection and external antennas.

Ok, I have not tried this yet but if it works in anyway similar to how it would on a laptop then I should succeed. Using either "Linux Deploy" or Complete Linux Installer" I can install various Linux distros on my phone virtually. Even custom images can be used. But by stock you can install Ubuntu, Debian, (not sure why they offer both), Backtrack, Kali (again, unsure why they offer both) and several other Linux distros.
If I install Backtrack, which I know supports the adapter I want to use when running from live cd or live usb from a laptop (or even Kali Linux) then it should also work on my device. It's all about the drivers and disabling the devices built in WiFi adapter....
I have to take my phone back to stock due to some issues which have recently occurred. I will S-Off first probably, then return to Stock, re-root and after I recover my contacts, programs, etc, etc, I will attempt to install a virtual image of either BT5 or Kali and see what happens.
Again, I will keep updated this thread. If it works then everyone with an M7 from Sprint will be able to utilize this method.

Hmmm, interesting... I actually have a Nexus 7 - 32GB 1st gen, it's a nice, smooth tablet but doesn't hold a candle many other devices out there. If I had my choice of device to turn in to a "hacking" tab, uh, Phablet... I would choose the Galaxy Note 3.

But, aside from that... You would think that you would only be limited to any devices hardware capabilities... Technically, we could probably take an old Toshiba or Acer Iconia tablet, install and/or run either BT5 or Kali virtually on top of whatever version of Android the device is running and have near the same capabilities that you would with a laptop.
If/when I figure out a way to use my Alpha AWUS036NH on any of the devices I own I'll be able to wardrive and pick up networks from nearly and 1/8th - 1/4 of a mile away. No exaggeration. Utilizing a 16dBi omni directional antenna instead of the measly 5 dBi that's included make an enormous difference.
But, rather or not it will work so easily running BT5 or Kali virtually over JellyBean or ICS compared to the ease of a live/virtual/physical installation of either OS on a laptop or PC will only be known once it has been tried. I wish I had more free time to do what I truly love to do with technology instead of the repetitive and thankless administration tasks I perform at work... The grass is always greener though... Lol!
One of these weekends I'll get something going, and I'll post it and hopeflly save peeps that $899. The only thing they will have to pay for will be the adapter(s) they choose to utilize and the tablet, phablet, or even phone that they want to use The rest will be open source and included with (hopefully) current and future releases of Kali Linux now that BT5 is suddenly and abruptly "dead". Did that catch anyone else by surprise or just me? Lol!

I personally suggest any laptops with minimum intel I5 core, 2 gb memory and without operating system so you can boot up into your ubuntu live usb without dual booting with other OS. Me personally have no problems using Dell inspiron for 5 years. Hope it helps :good:

Get an Intel-only laptop. The fewer 3rd party components (WiFi, sound,…) you have, the likelier is it that everything just works.
