Don't know how to boot in twrp - Xiaomi Redmi 8 Questions & Answers

I recently got my phone's bootloader unlocked so that I could flash custom recovery(twrp) on it, that I think I successfully did. This might sound like dumb question(which it is), but how do I boot in twrp? I have Redmi 8.

if you havent done it yet, id highly suggest to also install the vbmeta patch. it tries to bypass avb by unblocking unverified recoveries and more importantly, roms
the command to properly install it is also near the attachment

if youre still on miui and havent straight rebooted back to recovery. there is a high chance it got replaced by the default recovery again. after installing twrp (currently at 3.6.x), id also recd
fastboot reboot recovery
to normally boot into recovery, its volup + power. but sometimes it doesnt get recognized so id hold it until the 2nd vibration

I really ****ed up

So, I ****ed up.
Earlier this night i hard bricked my device while trying to uninstall Magisk. Used a guide that worked and was back on stock OOS 3.5.0.
In the old Oxygen OS I installed TWRP. But the thing with the recovery was that you needed to boot recovery from the command line with the command
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
. If I booted into recovery in any other way the screen is just black and never boots.
When I tried to install OOS 4.0.1 I got error code 7. Googled it and it just told me to relock the bootloader and install the OTA instead.
I relocked it, and when it was done I got the prompt to fill in the password to start Android. But the thing was I did not use any security options, no fingerprint or pin code. So zero luck there. And now I can't boot into recovery because I didn't flash the stock recovery because I'm a retard, so when I'm trying to boot recovery it's just black. So I have no chance to come back. Please help...
So this is not a hard brick. It's a brick for sure, but a Hard Brick is where you cannot boot up your phone whatsoever.
Now, assuming from the vague details you've provided, you can boot into the normal boot logo screen? You should be able to get into fastboot, but if you can't since you've not mentioned it, there are still ways of getting your device back into OOS.
If you can get your device into Fastboot;
1. Boot into FB
2. Unlock your bootloader
3. Reflash TWRP
4. Boot into TWRP
5. Flash ROM of your choice.
If you can't get into Fastboot;
Use this thread ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/unbrick-unbrick-tutorial-oneplus-3t-t3515306)
OR use this one if you want the updated tools and follow the instructions on the above Thread (https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/help/ultra-brick-oreo-firmware-ob16-nougat-t3689356)
What you need to know;
Never lock your bootloader when you have a Third Party recovery or ROM installed.
Never interrupt the unbrick process.
Please do a search here on XDA before you post a new thread. There have been similar issues solved multiple times on this Forum.
Good luck!

Thank you for your reply, I tried to do the method with the MSMDownload thing yesterday, but the computer did not recognize the device. It was late in the night (5am) so I went to bed. This morning I took my other computer and plugged my phone in, it recognized it and I was able to fully recover the phone!

This isn't good idea. As already noted, never relock the bootloader on this device with TWRP, root, etc. It should only be relocked after returning to full stock condition.
Also, never install an incremental OTA when you have TWRP (root, etc.), only the full update zips should be used in that case.
Try to stick to these forums for advice. Maybe the guidance your found above is not specific to this device?

Bootloader?

When I played with the phone at an ATT store I saw a bootloader unlock button in the dev settings. Does anyone know if we can unlock the bootloader on either the china version or the ATT version? I'm not some big time developer, but I know enough that I could whip up a build of TWRP if anyone's willing to test it with their device.

If you point me in the right direction I can provide that info. I am new to doing this but I am always a fan of modding stuff. I just got the ATT Axon M and I love it. If you have a thread that I can follow then I can provide the info you're looking for.
I just received China version of 6GB/128GB, and it has "OEM unlocking" in developer option

Try booting to Bootlaoder via adb, BUT enable OEM Unlocking under Developer option first, then do this :
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
once booted to bootloader (IF THERE IS ANY)
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
IF the Chinese M have unlock bootloader that should make the unlock Bootloader screen show up, and you can either NO to unlock OR YES to unlock with out having any problems.
No dice on fastboot for me so far on an ATT version. "adb reboot bootloader" just reboots the phone. I tried a few button combinations from power off:
- Power + volume down loads factory test mode (no fastboot)
- Power + volume up opens a "android recovery" which looks similar to old clockwork mod with a couple flash options, a couple wipe options, and a couple reboot options. One of the reboot options is reboot to bootloader, but it just boots the system
- Power + both volume buttons brings a black screen and the phone is detected by my pc, but neither adb or fastboot see a device
Hey guys i know that this is a bit off topic but does anyone have a zip of the recent OTA updates of the ATT version... for some reason my phone will not get any updates
I have fiddled around with my phone a bit more as this thing desperately needs an lcd density tweak, so I am trying to get root. I have found you can get to adb sideload (which requires zip verification, so no dice) and EDL mode with "adb reboot edl". MiFlash sees the device in EDL mode but of course you can only flash .img's from that mode, and there is no recovery.img for this device yet. I was going to try to Axon 7 EDL tool to flash twrp for the axon 7 but I can't get any backups to pull, so I am not going to risk flashing over the recovery.img and bricking.

Wait, I'm probably not understanding this correctly, but if we had a twrp.img we'd be able to flash it? The bootloader would still be locked though so we couldn't flash any ROMs or root zips?
Unfortunately zte likes to keep their bootloader locked by removing fastboot access; it's the same for the zmax pro which I'm currently making roms for it. The way we got root was through a program that had a firehoses for it to flash twrp onto it using edl mode. Try searching though the internet and see if your firehoses was leaked
you need programmer file, I only know 3 device already has its programmer tool.
ZTE Axon 7 (axon7),
ZTE Axon 7 mini (tulip),
ZTE Trek 2 (jasmine),
just be something, after android nougat the bootloader is not locked, to flash twrp you need the programmer of Axon M

Miflash only works on an unlocked bootloader. It appears that you have a Chinese Model and you just did what was supposed to be avoided. You should get accustomed to Miflash moving forward. Never use Flash_All_Lock while cross flashing China/Global roms. You'll have to wait to unlock your Bootloader now and post that flash the China rom to get back. If any time you wish to move to the India rom, either use a twrp recovery or just use Flash_All while using the fastboot image which should eventually avoid locking the bootloader

1. if you can still enter fastboot mode, there is a possibility that you can do TWRP flashing again (the TWRP version must be correct so that the data on the cellphone can be read properly) / Flashing from the PC (if you are lucky, the flashing will work properly without any problem or you can bypass the bootloader locked using software or something else). [make sure ROM version must be appropriate because this is very crucial]
2. You can try using the test point method (EDL / Emergency Download Mode) [This method is usually used if your K20Pro is constrained by Hardbrick due to ARB4] , but this method requires you to open the case / body behind your K20Pro. and I cannot guarantee that the flashing process will succeed easily because in some cases if the K20Pro is detected damage / error due to ARB4, then you are required to have an Authorized Mi Account. I might be able to help you remotely, if you agree with the risks & requirements in the flashing process (I can lend my account, but it's not free).
Hi All, I did the same thing - whoever build the UI for MiFlash should be shot - why default that selection to something that will be undesirable!!?
Anyway, i tried to flash indian rom and forgot to set to Clean All, it locked the bootloader.
So i now have redmi recovery and Fastboot options only on phone.
Have tried fastboot + miflash but all options (now with Chinese rom) - says Erase Boot Error.
Tried MiAssistant + Mi PC Suite - it is not detecting the phone in either MiAssistant recovery mode nor Fastboot mode. what is weird is the phone and connector animation on phone is correctly depicting when it is plugged in/unplugged. But the PC suite isnt detecting the device.
Soft bricked - *sigh.... any help will be greatly appreciated from the community
BTW i am more worried that the phone will run out of battery and never wake up once battery drains completely as it is in bootloop into Redmi recovery and can't be turned off (someone tell me how!?) - I don't see the phone respond to charging in any state... : (
Can you still reach fastboot? If so you can unlock phone again and flash TWRP using ADB. After that boot straight into TWRP and connect it to your computer, internal SD storage should then automatically mount. Drag and drop ROM .zip into internal storage, use TWRP file manager to move it out of the data folder and do a default wipe using TWRP. Then flash .zip ROM (for example xiaomi.eu stable) and you should be back in business. Please let me know if you need any files like working recovery image and further instructions.
I had some trouble with my TWRP recovery yesterday, flashed it on unlocked bootloader with Chinese stable ROM installed, on reboot out of fastboot it boots straight into ROM and overwrites the TWRP recovery with default recovery. I fixed it by flashing recovery again, boot straight into it and flash xiaomi.eu stable, now recovery is TWRP and does not get overwritten.

Some great ideas - Just tried to unlock bootloader - This device came pre-unlocked so the device is tied to the seller's account.
I have unlock permission - but unlocker say device is not bound to my account matching my assumptions - anyone know what's the best way to re-claim ownership? Especially when I can't get into ROM at all?

My comment was meant for OP but I hoped it would help you as well! I am personally not well informed about the Xiaomi / Redmi ownership situation when the seller unlocked the phone.. maybe you can contact them and get a corresponding password to the account, it has been the solution I have seen offered here. Maybe the emergency flash solution from Robbo.5000 works?
I just got this phone a week now and was only able to unlock and flash yesterday, I was aware of the ownership problem thanks to this forum so I bought the sealed CN version. Hope you figure it out!
Thanks guys. I am going for the Test Point solution - have made contact with the Russian tech the others did and made an appointment. I just have to pretend to be Jerry Rig before then and open her up! Fingers crossed!

The system has been destroyed

Hello, after unsuccessful OTA update my phone doesnt boot into Android any more.
I had an original, untouched xiaomi system (not a custom one, not rooted etc).
Bootloader locked like default.
I think update.zip could be faulty - I have no idea how.
I am able to run Fastboot but due locked BL I cannot do much there.
I deasemble phone, pull out the battery, connected EDL pinouts with a wire, and all this togetcher connecter to PC.
Phone is visible by PC.
Downloaded ROM, and tried to flash via MI Flash..
On last moment I am getting error with information that my mi.com account is not athourised to do such a thing.
I tried also Mi Flash Pro founded on Cyanogenmod forum, but without luck - still getting same error.
Does anyone know how to get out from this situation or should I rather open warranty process in Gearbest?

Just flash a custom recovery, the device even had the offical twrp. So?? Just not into fastboot and then flash the recovery by the -- command
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(You have to rename the twrp file to recovery or whatever, just write the image file name instead of recovery in the second one. Ex fastboot flash recovery 123.img)
Then command
Fastboot reboot
(Hold the power up button for booting into twrp before hitting enter)
Download a miui recovery rom for your device from anywhere, I don't know I'm lazy.
And before flashing, go into mount select vendor and system if not selected.
And then select wipe
Advanced wipe
Select vendor system data cache.
Swipe to clean
Move the rom to your device
(If your device does not show up in your pc, then go into mount (twrp) select enable MTP if it's disabled, if it shows disabled then enable it again)
After that just flash your rom and then a permissive patch you can ask anyone. Or just flash pitchblack recovery. Fixed my problem of not not booting.
Sorry for the wrong format, wrote it on mobile, as I am a lazy bum.
Wut bruh.

Root A12 From Todays Software Drop?

Has anyone had any luck rooting the new A12 P5 update yet from today? Normal method seems to brick the phone.
Easy restored it but not sure about how to approach it.
Same here. The usual method of patching and flashing the modified boot image via magisk does not work. The phone refuses to boot into system but instead boot into bootloader, saying that the boot image is not recognised / verified. Flashing the original boot image allows the phone to boot normally again so no data lost for me.
Another problem is that google pay detects root and I cannot setup in-store payment, even though I don't have root. erasing google play services and google pay data does not solve the problem.
I am going back to android 11.

Touche - Fairpoint there sir - 100 points to you!
The method we used on Android 11 will no longer work due to the introduction of Verified Boot 2.0 in Android 12.
Please read my guide on rooting Android 12
You guys should go check the new re-root thread under the Guides and news sub here.
Which the person who wrote just linked to above me.
If that still doesn't work, just use the official Android Flash Tool website, install with a wipe, and disable: verification, and dm-verity with the options provided before flashing Android 12 with this tool.
Once the update is flashed with AFT, just boot to bootloader and fastboot flash your patched Magisk image. You can do this immediately after the phone is flashed, if you're quick enough before it boots to device setup, do the key combo to get to fastboot upon boot (volume down + power), fastboot flash the patched image, then reboot.
Instant root before you even start device setup!
I just did a complete wipe and reinstall this morning, coming from Beta 5 to A12 final, and I'm rooted with Magisk, works perfect, and just like it always has.
