(Request) Modify "Clear all" in the overview - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Apologies if it already has been mentionned but I didn't find anything about it.
Before my Pixel 5 I used to have a Samsung and I was really surprised how the pixel deals with the "clear all" function on the overview screen.
I like the way apps are displayed side by side on the pixel, but having to swipe aaaaaall the way back to the first opened app to clear all is not really user friendly. On Samsung phone, the Clear all button is set under the apps preview, so it's always on screen. Really convenient when you open the overview only to use that function.
So here comes my question! Is such a functionnaly existing or possible on my Pixel ?

On stock ROM, the "clear all" button only appears on the very left of the "recents". You have to swipe the screen --> and it will appear on the left. I don't think you can change that unless you install a custom ROM that has a setting to put that button there.
You might be doing the "clear all" out of habit due to the old issue that apps in the background would eat away your battery and cause the phone to get hot. This is no longer true because Android now has very good ram and app management for this to be an issue any more.

Thanks for the clarification, you have a good guess, I'm doing it out of habits from ancien times so I'll just have to change that

Yeah same, me too. It's now become an OCD where my Recents must be empty or it feels icky. I'm also stuck in the ancient times. Still using the 3 button navigation and I have to spam the back button to close an app, or else it just doesn't feel right haha.

[Q] [Request] android fanboys don't read this

Okay to start off I love my nexus one and would not buy an iphone so all the android fanboys don't jump on my case. But there are some software aspects of the iphone that i like. For instance I like the way messages show up on the lockscreen on the iphone and the iphones multi-tasking. I was wondering if it would be possible to implement the iphone style of multi-tasking into the nexus one. Basically the trackball can still be used for selection and all that good stuff if you even do that, but if you double tap it at a selectable speed it would open recent apps. Or even go further to make the scroll bar that the iphone has. Give me some response on this, tell me what you guys think.
what is this...i dont even?
what is your question? I want to somehow have a setting in the nexus one where if you double tap the trackball it will open up recent apps and possibly implement an iphone like scroll bar at the bottom.
Sorry for asking but.... Are you sure you know how to use your Nexus ?
yes i know how to hold the home button... lol

and? why would you want to double tap your trackball? you know iphone do that because they only have one button right?
also it would create huge issues for selection with trackball...
Let's say while wanting to double tap the trackball for multitasking, you had something selected, the first click should theoretically open that app/link directly...if we implement such feature, people that actually use the trackball for opening stuff will have delays, which sucks massively.
All in all, this idea is awful. You can make the number of recent apps higher in Cyanogen, do that and you won't need the scrolling bar of the iPhone...
If you want to double tap something, download QuickDesk PRO and set it to open on double tap of home key. It has a 'QuickPanel' feature that shows recent apps and its a fantastic piece of sofware.
For the messages on lockscreen.. download WidgetLocker and place Pure Messenger Widget on the lockscreen..
chompSMS does this lockscreen "thing", and even allows you to reply to them without unlocking, if you so wish, and relocks after.
For double-tap home, there's literally loads of multitasker apps that can do that, even offering "coverflow" style switching between apps...
Itching thumb is another good task switcher. nice looking graphics and gesture support.
Use HandcentSMS to replicate that better than Iphone experience
just get an iphone.
then you can try that, and maybe you'll go back to the nexus one, maybe not.

Nice first post
OP, the reason double tap is a feature on iPhones is because of the lack of buttons. Steve only likes to push is customer's buttons, not his phone's
(horrible, I know lol)

Unfortunately it does not seem to work with CM61/ADW, only see 1-3 apps. Also the 'styles' preference is disabled.
wow lots of activity just got out philosophy class so its alil hard to comprehend all of it but, I am gonna try the lockscreen thing and the double tap the home button sounds really good. The thing that i got annoyed with holding the home button is that sometimes it will accidentally go to the home screen. LOL I don't want the iphone... my mom, step-dad, and roommate all have them lol. Android is where its at. With all these customizations you guys have told me about I am satisfied.
if you hold "home" button the last used apps would appear and that also means those apps would open faster which leads you again multi tasking. ok, I admit that's not a user-friendly way to access the apps but theyre going to fix alotof stuff like that in gingerbread.
There's also a program called Smart Taskbar. I didn't like it, but perhaps someone else will..

HUGE problem with new ADW launcher

Be careful when you use the updated version of ADW.Launcher. For reasons I can't fathom, they did two major changes that can cause a real problem.
1. They moved the trash can from the bottom to the top when removing something from the desktop
2. The App drawer button in the center can now be replaced.
I think this is incredibly stupid on the part of the ADW people. It makes it very easy to replace your app drawer with some application, then you can't get to your app drawer, and you can't reset it. Even the "reset" option in ADW doesn't fix it. In order to get my center button back to an app drawer, I had to uninstall it and reinstall it, meaning I get to spend the next hour putting all my icons, favorites, calendars, &c., where they need to be.
Up until these changes, ADW was hands down the best launcher there is. I think the simple fix would be to have a checkbox to protect the center button from being changed, the way it used to be. Or move the trash can back to the bottom where it is on every other launcher.
Or to get the App Drawer button back you can long-press on the desktop, Custom Shortcut>Pick Activity>Launcher Actions>Open/close App Drawer. Then just drag that shortcut to the dock bar.
A little wonky at first, but the extra customization this allows is worth it imho.
App drawer can be gotten back, long-press on the homescreen and choose "Add Custom Shortcut", for Action choose "App Drawer". Now you can drag that into your dock.
It appears that that does work, but I looked for something like that, and after 25 minutes of searching through each menu, I didn't think to look into Launcher Actions. That's not terribly intuitive, and rather annoying that they would change that without warning about it. Even though there is a complicated, backdoor way of fixing it, it would make a lot more sense just to protect the main button by default, with a checkbox to unprotect it, with an explanation of how to get your drawer back.
you're whining about something so simple to do... maybe you just need to learn how to use your phone..
Hold your finger on the screen. click Custom Shortcuts.. and Click choose activity... then click Launcher Actions (usually 3rd one from the top) and click App Drawer button.. -_-..
I'm with you. It's not a good feature, IMHO. Seems rather arbitrary considering every Android user for the last 2 years has become all too accustomed to trash at the bottom. Don't get me wrong, the new update brought some great features, I just don't believe this is one.
you guys probably don't theme often.. having a custom app drawer is awesome.. all it needs now is a widget type to open the app drawer...
get with the times.
it's ok its happens
Yeah I wasn't too happy about the trash on the top either. I went back to Launcher Pro now because I didn't want to have to get use to something that was just the opposite on every other android phone. I am sure they made the change for a reason.

The trash on top was indeed a good idea, coz whenever a shortcut was to be deleted, some noob users were not able to drop it into the trash can, but instead added it to their dock.
But then again, when you long tap on any shortcut, there should have been a feature, where the bottom dock completely disappears and only the trash can is visible.
I personally love the change... Trash on top... something new!

multiple apps, minimized?

I seem to be only able to have 1 app open at a time?
I have to backbutton the app, then go to main screen to start another app..
How do i have 3-4 apps running, with the minimized apps that i can grab up top like my phone...
thanks
I'm not exactly sure what you are requesting here, but applications can run in the background. While you may need to go the Home screen to get back into an application you were previously in, it can still be running from before.
You mention of minimizing applications, which doesn't happen with the android system in terms of windows (min/max), but some applications open can be accessed throught he notification bar, if they have a ongoing notification.
Maybe you're talking of pressing and holding the N button to bring up the 8 most recent applications to easily switch between them?
If that is the case, there is also a nice application called Swipepad that may help you as well.
My android phone, with the slide down window at top is what i was referring to, where you can "pull" down the top of window,, and see your running apps...
thanks

What phone is that? It must be a customization of some sort since Android doesn't normally work that way. Like biohazrd51 said, just hold down the physical "n" button for short second and a "running" app list will pop up no matter what program you're in and even if the status bar you're talking about is hidden

Back button = Exit. Just push the N button to go Home.. And as said, sounds like your phone is some tweak to Android, until Honeycomb there was no method provided by the OS itself to show "running apps" besides in the Settings->Applications view.
Sounds like something from HTC Sense. What phone/ROM you have?

Galaxy Note GB, somehow multitasking. :)

If you, as me owned a Galaxy Nexus, or another phone with a BUGFREE build of ICS, you might be missing "Recent Apps".
How ever, if you're on a 2.3 rom, you can get a pretty useable way of achieving this.
1. Find JKay Deluxe Setting, (Thanks for developing this!)
2. Open it and scroll down to "Double click enabled."
3. Click on "choose application for double click".
4. Choose "Task Manager" on the list.
5. Freaking enjoy endless clickin' from within apps, to change to other apps or exit em'.
This will do for me until AOKP gets stable.
Cheers.

I don't understand what you are saying. App switching in GB or Replacing App switching in ICS?
I've always long pressed the home button and got a list of the last six recent apps. I even seen a mod to make it 8 apps. I hate the recent apps in ICS. I would much rather have GB's recent apps with icons instead of the bulky screen shots. I try to avoid doing double button presses on physical buttons, I don't want to wear it out, like the issue with the Iphone 3G and 3GS had.
I don't like ICS, so until there is something that I have to have that is ICS specific, I will stick with GB. Maybe I can hold out till JellyBean.
I do the same but with Smart Task switcher.
way way better than any other multitask app

Task Manager is the app you're taken to if you long hold home button and then press Manage Applications. A list of the apps and an exit button for each. Sorry you didn't understand mate. I kinda agree. But I don't rly care how it looks, as long as it allows for quick switching and exiting. Long press doesnt allow for quick exiting.

Ok, I didn't catch that you were looking to kill apps from the first pop up.
Funny how with Froyo and Gingerbread, the idea was to not kill apps and let Android manage it and now in ICS they are making it easy to kill apps again. I got quite use to letting Android kill them for me.
I also like that it only shows the last few apps. Drives me nuts that the Ipad just lets the recent apps list grow and grow. Sometime I get a little @nal and want to kill everything and it takes several minutes to close everything and I en threalize I should have just rebooted instead. I also hate in OSX, when I hit the read X, I WANT THE APP CLOSED and not hanging around in the Dock. And why is it MAC users have 150 apps on their Dock. Like I really believe you use all those apps regularly. I guess if they had a windows machine, they would be the ones who could not see their wallpaper through all the folders and app icons on the desktop.
Sorry for the Apple rant. I have my rants about Android, Windows and Ubuntu too.

Swipe to resize window not available after oneUI upgrade?

Hey,
Not sure if anyone else has noticed but after the OneUI update I cant swipe down from top left to resize windows.
This was a really useful productivity feature when multitasking (especially at work).
you used to be able to enable "popup view" then you could swipe down from top left to "pop-out" windows but now the only way to do this is a long-winded long press on multiview window then long press again on the top of app then select pop-up view... its much less effective than just swiping down (also you need to follow this same process for each window you want to have floating...
Does anyone know how to get the older much better way of working again? - or has it gone for good?! :crying:
Cheers

It was already discussed a few times. It's removed, all the good multiwindow features that we had in nougat/oreo in galaxy phones are gone. The oneUI solution is close to the google stock one. No swipe from corner, no menu between two split screen apps, no fast way to split screen via holding recents or swipe/hold (but it fires google assistant for example), no hold card in recents for fast split or popout. Everything was removed and this is really bad for my productivity. Feature that was marketed, especially with the note 9 that is phone for productivity and multitasking, feature that samsung were praised for how much better is vs the other android makers solution - removed. Well, good job.
Wow, I had not realised all. Of that is now gone... Sadness!!

Wrong, if you mean split screen mode it still exists. On OneUi you gota open recent apps and then hold down on app icon to get a menu and from there you got split screen mode. Also popup window exists still aswell. Which can be found in same menu as split screen. Swipe from corner can be enabled again in settings on One UI

Read my post again, I never said those features are removed. We(I) were talking about the shortcuts that were fast and convenient. Simple two examples:
I am watching youtube, decides I want to also msg on viber. Before I can only hold recents - open viber and start typing without the video interruption. Right now you will go to recents, video WILL interrupt, you will press the icon on the card, select split screen, then viber, then you will press play and wait for the video to start. Second scenario is when you decide you want to switch two split screen apps place - there is no mid menu anymore, so you need to close/open them. pop-out is also a lot slower to do and with more steps. Generally it's 3-4 times slower to do the same now vs oreo and the funny thing is - they easily could had avoided that - popout from corner option in the advanced menu, swipe recents and hold for instant split screen (right now it's like that for google assistant - swipe and hold, never mistrigger it so it's good) and return of the mid menu between two split apps. Simple, but they removed it all. They even removed in the newer second base that was released after the first one a leftover for hold recents when navigation bar is on for instant split screen.
I am still expecting this option to be reenabled by samsung. It was seriously useful as hell and now i feel my phone is half broken

Try Nice lock from xda:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/themes/nicelock-module-download-links-module-t3923844
It's Good Lock for the places that can't get it from Galaxy store.
Everything you need is on first post, the launcher and modules...
Edit.
It doesn't bring back the hold down recent key for multiwindow though. You now have to have an active app running, tap on recent key, select and hold down the second app you want and slide it to top or bottom of screen to activate split screen.
