Question I can't send MMS text after latest Android 12 update - Google Pixel 5a

Since the latest Android 12 March 5th update I can't send/receive MMS text on Straight Talk. Sms text work fine. I have tried everything Straight Talk tech support suggest to no avail, maybe because they don't sell or support pixel phones- I don't know. My wife's pixel 5 has the SAME issue by the way. I noticed that the default APN settings are totally different after latest android update- compared to previous version. I have tried a couple different APN settings but didn't help. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Same thing happened to my pixel 5 running on net 10 att service. Factory reset phone didn't work neither has just about anything else. Tried all the same things you tried

Same issue for me on my Pixel 5a on the Straight Talk AT&T network. I've done a factory reset, turned off 5G, tried on and off Wifi, tried several different variations of APN settings, all without success.

The ONLY thing I haven’t tried is a factory reset, I’m glad to see you tried that before I wasted my time.

Maybe try going to the Android 12 web site and troubleshoot since it’s their update that messed it up?

did you try to flash the factory rom again?

i do advanced and flash all partitions. that should reflash the radios. most likely the radio.img is the problem. or the firmware does not match or closely match the system version.

Lost LTE Engineering mode?

I just noticed that on my phone when I try to get into the LTE engineering mode, it just clears the input when I enter the final star. Just so we are clear, I am entering: *#*#33284#*#* the code just clears from the screen.
When I try the LTE engineering mode app for the Nexus 6, it just says dialer has crashed and needs to close.
Has anyone seen this before? It's kinda odd but on the 5.1 I was able to get it. I haven't tried it since I upgraded to 5.1.1
I am on stock, rooted, using Nova Launcher.
My dialer version is 2.1, not sure if that is updatable though play store. I am thinking of factory resetting, then factory image flashing to see if that will fix my issues.
I have maybe an unrelated problem I also hope will get fixed with this, and it is MMS though tmobile's wifi calling. I can't get it to work for whatever reason, but the LTE engineering mode is more important. Whatever the case, I have an album with my build/baseband/kernel screenshot. Anyone have any suggestions or ran into this before?

if you read the apps description, it says that you have to be on android 5.1 and stock only, for it to work. android 5.1.1 is not android 5.1.
So what you are saying is that LTE engineering screen has been disabled on 5.1.1 since I can't get the dial code to work?
Other people seem to be able to get into it fine...

well, im on m, so had to go by what the app says. the app opens on m, but shows nothing. im glad that i was wrong
I'm still wondering what might have caused it. I think it was removing those 'carrier' specific apks that people made a fuss about when 5.1 rolled out. I didnt removed any of the verizon/spirit branded system apk so one of those might have been controlling the LTE engineering mode.
As for Wifi MMS for tmobile, still a no go sadly.

Works for me on 5.1.1 on T-Mo but I am not running the stock dialer, I am using the Project Fi dialer. Also did you get your mms fixed? Your settings basically look ok, I usually just combine the 2 APNS so that GPRS and MMS are together. No need to separate them, and you can only have one active.... so the MMS could fail for that reason also.
FWIW I have used that code on 5.1 and 5.1.1 to bring up the Debug menu. I think I the dialer cleared the code after the last keypress when I first got my N6 (5.0).
5.1.1 LTE engineering screen
5.1.1 LTE engineering screen works fine on my Nexus 6 stock.
Will this work on Android 6.0 for the Nexus 6? I have been trying to get into this as well. When I finish inputing the code it just goes blank. Thank you in advance.

Same thing happens to me and I've flashed the stock images twice.

Lost mobile data with an exclamation mark, I can still make calls.

Edit: added details.
I have had my Nexus 6 for 3 days and first installed my Straight Talk SIM yesterday. Everything worked fine for less than a day then I started getting MMS picture messages failing. Now I get no mobile data. I swapped my SIM with my wifes, also on straight talk and mine with hers and I get the same issue and mine works fine in her phone.
I have rebooted many times, I have checked my APN settings and even have tried alternatives.
I have done a few searches and see other have this or very similar issues but I have not found anything that fixes my issue.
I am running Pure Nexus with the stock kernel.

Need few more details. Who is your carrier? What ROM is on working phone?
I would clean flash latest factory image and see if that helps.

Straight Talk.
Pure Nexus ROM
I did a back up and tried flashing another ROM last night, CyanogenMod but I did something wrong and I ended up flashing Pure Nexus again and it restored everything from my backup (still learning I guess). But it is working fine, now that is, it was working fine before. The only thing that I thought may have caused an issues was I had Macrodroid setup to disable wifi radio when out of my homes cell tower's range. I used this all the time with my old phone and it helped a lot to save battery. But it didn't seem to work for some reason. So I turned Macrodroid off and it did help with my data issues then I even uninstalled it completely.
So bottom line, it's working now, but like I said in my original post, it was working for about 24 hours then I started having issues.

I think all know this detail by now. The APN however is unique straight talk even though it is technically AT&T or (T-mobile)
I can't believe this is still an issue, totally unacceptable IMO
I've had this twice today. 100% stock, no root. Latest T-Mobile 5.1.1 with T-Mobile service. I'll take my phone out of my pocket and have a "!" next to the signal bar.
This even happens when in use. I had Spotify streaming music in my car when it cut out. When I got home, I checked the phone and again, "!" next to the signal bar.
I just did a clean flash and factory reset yesterday and set the phone up as a new device (no apps auto downloaded from previous setup) and I'm still getting this error whenever I leave the phone to sleep too long.
Same here !
Bought a N6 as my first Google phone, I thought I'd get the benefits of an always up to date phone, but instead I have to deal with that kind of issue
Hopefully that's a software issue and Google will provide us with a fix quickly... that's why I bought a Nexus !
(Orange 4G - France)
I had the same thing happen to me today. I left my phone in the car to go to a meeting, went to check it had no signal. Just turned on airplane mode for a few seconds then off, everything came back. I'm using the phone on ATT GoPhone network. I'm also using the nextgenphone apn instead of the phone apn. Maybe that's causing it.

Nexus 6 LTE connecting issues... strange!

My rooted Nexus 6 and my sons stock Nexus 6 are having a lot of trouble connecting to LTE on Tmobile. I have to go to APNs, reset to default and reboot every hour or so. I did no changes to my phone.
Apparently, this is happening on other networks too.
Can anyone shed light on this? Some back door google update.
tMobile says no changes on their end. Also, other carriers are having this issue, ONLY Nexus 6.
PS - apparently , this has happened before too

flash a different radio/modem.
Same here. Just spoke to T-MOBILE and rep said it is an issue with a lot Nexus 6 users. They kicked me off the network and it work for a bit but I'm still losing data. She said their tech department is working with Google for a fix.
Fyi...Flash 3 other radio's and it doesn't make a difference.
Edit: change all to a lot

I got the same answer.
I did flash the 5.32 and 5.34 modems. No dice.
Then I tried Developer preview 5.39. It's been working for 15 minutes, which is a long time since the issue cropped up.
What a pain!
Not sure if my issue is the same, but for the last couple days Textra fails to send a text unless I reboot. Even a reply to a just received text fails. I have tried a couple different radios but neither has helped. I am also on a T-Mobile Nexus 6 stock rooted with the August 6.0.1 security update.

That is probably the same issue. I can receive texts, but can't send without a reboot.
So far.. the 5.39 developer modem has kept connection for an hour. Which is good considering how intermittent it was.
What really blows is that my phone and service was perfect until this event.
Even in the mountains of the Philippines last year, my phone worked perfect.
You may try dp5 my WiFi and Mobil got a lot better, but I'm not on t mobil. Flashing only the radio is maybe not enough, if you are on stock anyway you have nothing to loose
Check out Reddit for the growing thread on this issue. Happening with Nexus 6 users on different carriers around the world. Some GPS connected apps like Pokemon Go & Lyft will bork LTE connectivity. Probably a Google play services issue. Will be using my OnePlus one today just in case.

Interesting.. I hit the speedtest app right after a reboot to check, and it immediately borked my connection several times in a row. I like your theory..

I'm running stock N6, not rooted; bootloader locked; on T-Mo. While on WiFi, with WiFi calling enabled, I would get out of range of WiFi and cel data would not return without full reboot. If I disable WiFi calling before leaving WiFi service, cel data flipped as normal. I tested again with manual WiFi disable and if WiFi calling was on before the cut out, cel data never flipped on.
[Edit] I did notice though that when it does flip like it's supposed to, I'm connected at 3G. LTE doesn't kick on.

what radio can work on 5.1
Cause i have flyme rom, but have calls issue, ian not receiving any call. The other end saids it rings but my phone does not ring at all on calls.
It seems to be affecting some people, but not others. It also doesn't seem to be related to ROM, carrier, kernel, or radio versions. There are people all over the world on different carriers having the problem.
The symptoms I see are that I can't connect to any type of cellular data. Voice and SMS seem to work though. WiFi data works fine. GPS use seems to make it more likely to fail. Speedtest.net, Pokemon Go, Ingress, and Google Maps have been used to reproduce it.
The only thing I've found that seems to help is to freeze "Google Connectivity Services" using Titanium Backup. You might also try uninstalling updates, though it will just re-install. If it is related to that, it would make sense as the rollout of updates via Play Store are staged, so people would get the update at different times. I froze it about 4 hours ago and data has been solid with GPS use, LTE and HSPA tested. I also tested switching between WiFi and Cellular without issues on Tmobile-US. That's the only SIM I have, so I can't test other services. I couldn't seem to get a data connection for more than a few minutes before, so it's a huge improvement in my case.

T-Mobile acknowledges the issue. The one universal is that it's with the N6, not with other phones. There are a bunch of carriers around the world that are having the problem.
When mine breaks, SMS fails. The only mobile connectivity available to me is phone calls.
The Reddit thread mentioned above has people saying that disabling Location Services works. Far from ideal over time, but if it's true, it's something. I tried that. We'll see how it goes. Freezing Google Connectivity Services is nice, if it works without introducing other problems, because it would allow us to keep using whatever connectivity we like without data breaking.
I had a Bluetooth connectivity problem a year or more ago that surfaced literally out of nowhere and on every device I tested, a little more than ten of them. This was independent of ROM, root status, device, anything. The feature in question worked on every Android device we had tried one day (and for more than a year prior) and failed on every one the next. Sounds crazy, but it's what happened. Google barely paid attention to my bug reports and ran me in circles when they did. Never got fixed.
I trust this matter will.
Both my nexus6s are doing this with heavy GPS aps, data will shut down.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've had GCS frozen for a long time, running 5.39 radio & it happened to me. There is definitely something occurring substantially with our devices/network be it software or hardware based. Apparently T-Mobile & Google are working on it but the fix might not come until next week. I'll probably install latest N preview when I get home.

Wifi+ after Android 10

I recently updated to Android 10 on my P30 Pro. Since the update, my mobile data does not switch on after leaving wifi. When I leave a known wifi and try to access the internet, I get a notice I'm offline. I can still receive calls and texts.
I have wiped my cache, reset network settings, and even factory reset. Everything worked fine before update. It works if I restart my phone but that's a hassle every time I need Internet. I have asked in several forums, including Huawei.
Anyone else have this issue? I have 10.0.0.173 software version on VOG-L29 (C185).

Not sure if related, but I have read a few people saying they had issues with mobile data since updating to 10, and one solution was in the APN settings, the password box was empty rather than showing *********
Don't remember how it was fixed, but possibly look up your carriers APN settings password and enter it into that field
Thanks, I will give it a try.
I reset the APN and removed the prefilled "none" from some settings and every thing is good now. Thanks because I really did not want to rollback.

Pixel 5 wi-fi calling no longer on menu

I have a Pixel 5. I was trying to turn on wi-fi calling. It is no longer on my menu. I searched settings, I did a bunch of "Googling". Everything I read says it should be in the Phone app under Settings and then Calls. It is not. Searching the menu brings nothing up either. I have an old Pixel 2 on the same network. I found the wi-fi calling option and turned it on pretty easily.
Any idea what is going on here? I am clueless.

That's an entirely different question with various threads debating the points. But to your OP it is also in the phone settings, calling accounts, <click> the account and Wifi calling can be enabled there. If it's not there then perhaps it's not available on your dialing network.
The carrier (Ting/Verizon) turned it on. Magically, wifi calling appeared in my settings!
Now the Pixel 2 is using wifi calling fine. The Pixel 5 allows me to attempt to turn it on, but, alas, it fails. I contacted support again and they confirmed wifi calling is on for both devices. So, they did the "default" troubleshooting thing of asking me to do a factory reset on the Pixel 5 to see if that would make it use wifi calling.
I do not want to do a factory reset.

The only time I'd do a factory reset was when I wanted to for some reason or another. Never when a CSR tells be to do one to troubleshoot. Most I'd do is a reboot which I'm sure you've done. As for Wifi calling it's not all it's cracked up to be. I get dropped calls, crumby audio and overall a bad experience so I turned it off. Is there a demanding reason you need it? I'd also try to troubleshoot on your own and maybe check out Reddit for some insights. Good luck.

I switched from AT&T because of lack of coverage at my home about 2 weeks ago. TING/Verizon covers both. Last night, I lost service. Something happened to the Verizon tower for about 2/3 hours. If I had wi-fi calling, it would not have been an issue. Will this be something that happens on occasion? Most likely not. I never used wi-fi calling before (I had a microcell @ home for AT&T).
Reddit? I thought XDA was the place for all things cell phone related!
I went to clear the system cache... but apparently Android 11 does not have one!!
It just bugs me that I can not get it to turn on.
4 months until Pixel 6.... I guess I can wait for that and THEN do a factory reset.

Yes, stick with XDA,
What do you mean that "Android 11 doesn't have one" - You mean Android 11 doesn't have system cache?
What did you try that leads you to think this?
go to dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
then Phone information
then check that Wifi calling Provisioned is checked.
Hopefully help from users here can help you get it turned on.
I do feel a factory reset may be needed, however. but NOT sure at all.
Make sure My Verizon Services is turned on in app settings. (search system apps to find it). Allow it to Modify system settings, reboot
I remember having to jump some hoops like factory reset and clearing certain things in fastboot on the HTC 10 with Verizon in regards to WI-FI Calling/VoLTE.
Let me ask, did you switch from AT&T to TING while you owned this Pixel 5.
If so, was it working with AT&T?
When did you switch (which update of the Pixel)

If I had wi-fi calling, it would not have been an issue. Will this be something that happens on occasion? Most likely not. I never used wi-fi calling before (I had a microcell @ home for AT&T).
Reddit? I thought XDA was the place for all things cell phone related!
I went to clear the system cache... but apparently Android 11 does not have one!!
It just bugs me that I can not get it to turn on.
4 months until Pixel 6.... I guess I can wait for that and THEN do a factory reset.

@andybones Lol, I'm not saying ditch XDA it's my go to. But... Reddit has some pretty good content for phone issues along with cute animal pics (subreddit r/aww) and all kinds of stuff to get lost in.
As for this issue I did a cursory search in the GooglePixel sub and there have been some issues going back over the years with Ting and ATT and wifi calling. One post said use the dialer code you mentioned above and provisioning. Also factory resets did not help at least one frustrated user. Factory resets are so laborious even with Google cloud but I guess if it's needed then worth a try.
OP keep us posted if you do happen to get it fixed. Then I'll link it to the subreddit. lol

Yes, stick with XDA,
What do you mean that "Android 11 doesn't have one" - You mean Android 11 doesn't have system cache?
What did you try that leads you to think this?

When I get into recovery, the option to wipe cache partition is simply not there. All the other normal recovery options are there.... reboot, reboot to bootloader, apply update from ADB... even factory/data reset, but wipe cache partition is gone.
Here is a thread regarding the system cache.

I switched about 2 weeks ago. I was on the June update with AT&T. No idea if wifi calling worked as I had an old AT&T microcell I used at home instead. I am now on the July update. I bought the phone from the Google store, not a carrier.

I made a comment about sticking with XDA. Meaning stick with XDA, literally. If he finds the answer someplace else, GREAT! Just stick with XDA, and come back and post what fixed it.
Roll your eye all you want though. Useless as it is, roll on.

That thread is for OnePlus phone..
Also I'm guessing it was for when Android 11 came out and updating from Android 10 to Android 11. Yes, wiping cache for all apps will cut down on errors.
Maybe not having the My Verizon services app is leading to the issue.
I bought mine from Google store.. not Verizon (or I'd not have root)
Are you selecting in settings - Apps - "show system"?

You are correct, when I select "show system" My Verizon Services shows up. It has same permissions as yours.
I was able to get into recovery, but wipe cache partition is not an option anymore. Very strange.
I also deleted some AT&T apps that were still hanging around.

What about when you select Advanced and then is "modify system settings" allowed for the My Verizon services?
Also how were you able to delete AT&T apps? were they not system apps? or do you have root? I recall your post up above saying unrooted.
IIRC, stock recovery never had option to wipe cache, but rather to wipe data/factory reset
I would check the Playstore for an app to wipe cache, I'd link but the one I use requires root.
A suggestion is to root the device, try wiping the cache, and if things get working remove root.
Let me ask this, did you flash the July Factory image since switching to TING?
Try removing -w (to not lose data) and flash the latest July again. Can't hurt.

I can root it. I just have not had a need for root in years. I will try this and report back.
From the images I saw on the Verizon website, the stock pixel recovery does have wipe cache, but no harm in rooting.

Is there no one-click root? Maybe Magisk? I am not needing a custom ROM.
Spent quite a bit of time searching the net for answers. Seems like a common issue across all the Pixel devices, and yet, no one has ever managed to get it working except in instances where the carrier's provisioning was incorrect.

I'm sorry, what exactly do you mean by that?
I contacted Google Support.
Here is what they had me do:
1 Settings > System > Advanced > Reset Options > Reset Wi_Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. MAKE SURE TO UNCKEC ERASE DOWNLOADED SIMS
2 Settings > Apps & Notifications >(see all apps) Phone App > Clear Cache, Force Stop
3 Update all PlayStore Apps
4 Reboot
5 Attempt to enable Wi-Fi
FAIL
Insist the problem is with the carrier.

I use and suggest Magisk for rooting. But you will need a PC to fastboot flash the modified boot.img

I think if it's anything like how VZW is, it is the carrier. Possibly factory reset needed after turning on, or something else like wiping cache on the Phone and Settings apps.

Going to try a different SIM card from another carrier over the weekend. I will report back.
