Hello,
I have an AT&T Moto X, It's sim-unlocked so I have a different carrier (you can check my details on my profile). The condition in which I got this phone is:
It's running a 4.2.2 Rogers CA rom.
Can I update this to a 4.4.2 AT&T rom and still use my phone?
Or am I screwed and stuck with 4.2.2 (because obv the system update says that there is no update avl. at this time).
And.. How do I remove the Google bloatware from my rom? I've tried ES Root Explorer, TiBu, but they reappear when I reboot.
I prefer have a rom without any bloatware and mini gapps. But I love the Active Display.

On the phone go to App Drawer -> Settings -> About phone... What is listed as the SYSTEM VERSION.
Next, what does the BACK of the phone look like or say? Does it have the ATT logo on it? Does it have SMALL HARD TO READ Fine print at the bottom that says a model number? Or did it come with the original box that has the IMEI and Model on it? (the model would be XT1060, XT1053, XT1058, etc)
What carrier are you intending to use it with?
Power off the phone, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously NOTE: you may need to have the USB cable disconnected first. This will bring you into the AP Fastboot Flash Mode screen (aka bootloader or fastboot mode). It will say DEVICE IS... unlocked or locked. Which is it?
I am asking these questions to know...

exactly what rom version is on there.
As for removing bloat, and having that survive reboot, you need to root and disable write protection. The answers to my questions will help determine IF it can be done on your phone, and what process to use.
Rogers also is a xt1058. But unlike the AT&T, it's bootloader can be unlocked on motos site. Also there is no carrier branding.

A couple of things...
I am not 100% sure about the ability to flash the ROM for your model phone from a different carrier when the bootloader is locked... i.e. can you flash an ATT XT1058 with Rogers XT1058 rom SAFELY and successfully. I know, for example, that flashing roms between models (say XT1052 with XT1053) does require unlocked bootloader or it will immediately fail, plus is risky when you try and flash back.
Therefore i don't want to give you the wrong advice on flashing anything and will wait for someone else to jump in.
Until then.. some info you'll need to understand for removing "bloat"
The Moto X is a Google Certified device, so it will contain all the Google Apps, like Chrome, GMail, Google+, Google Play, Google Calendar, Google Maps, etc.That typical isn't considered bloat because most people buying an Android phone want to use Google's services. In the USA, wireless carriers like Verizon add their own bloat like VZNavigator, VZ Tones, VZ Protect, NFL Mobile, IMDB, VZ Cloud, etc., things MOST of their customers don't use, so it is considered bloat. The ATT ROM is filled with bloat of their own.
Moto freely gives out the bootloader unlock code for the Rogers XT1058 on their web site. BUT for the ATT XT1058, the bootloader is locked, and Moto DOES NOT give out the bootloader unlockcode. The only way to get it is the China Middleman (see the thread in the general section).
Unlocking the bootloader makes the difference in how you can root. Once you unlock the bootloader you have write protection disabled. So after you root, you can modify, delete, rename, etc files in /System and the like, and those changes will survive reboot.
If you can't unlock your bootloader, and are on Roms with Android version 4.4 (aka 4.4.0) and below, you can use SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo to root and disable write protection. But once you get on Android 4.4.2, you lose the ability to disable write protection so options like Pie, Towel or TowelPieRoot, are temporary, don't survive reboot, don't allow write access to /system, etc. And once you have 4.4.4 you can't even root. In other words, if you have a locked bootloader and really want to root and disable write protection, you want to stay on 4.4.0, and never upgrade.
Hey, thanks for replying. Is there any chance that in the near future Motorola may support AT&T bootloader unlocking? I think its a really bad **** move by AT&T to limit us like this. So pretty much I'm screwed with 4.2.2 until theres a way to unlock the boot loader. The China middleman is kinda expensive for me. But I'll give it a try when I'm done saving up 45$

No chance we will see the position from ATT, Verizon and Republic Wireless change such that Moto can give out bootloader unlock codes via the web site like they do for Sprint, Rogers, Etc.
Yeah, with a locked bootloader, the highest you can if you want write protection disabled is 4.4.0 (aka 4.4).

I installed the 4.4.2 rom by the fastboot method described in the "Return to 100% Stock" thread.
Everything works.
However.. I may not be able to use the China Middleman to unlock my bootloader..
my phone was made on "08 - 25 - 2013"
First of all, thanks to Raymonf (I dont know his XDA Username) for making these Odin files. This new version of modded Odin allows for flashing custom and official tars AND also compressed binaries, which Samsung will be using in all Odin firmwares from Oreo on.
Oh and doing this doesnt wipe data if you do exactly what I wrote below.
1. Download your devices firmware from below
2. Enable USB debugging by going to settings > about phone > software info > click build number 7 times and enter your password
3. Open command prompt on your PC and type adb reboot bootloader
4. Open odin and select the AP, BL, CP, and HOME_CSC file in their corresponding locations
5. Start it
6. You are there!
To go back, do the exact same thing with the U firmware files!

The modded/patched Odin has the model-ID and SHA hash check disabled, therefore allowing you to flash an unbranded "U1" firmware onto a branded "U" phone and vice versa.
As of now this works on most US Qualcom (QC) models, but an increasing number of international Exynos (EX) models now include a new RMM security which prevents this kind of cross-flashing unless you first disable the RMM, by flashing an RMM-Disabler package through TWRP.

What I'm not clear on is: after I flashed my factory unlocked s9 to the VZW U firmware to see if I could get video calling to work (it didn't) then flashing back to what has been described as stock U1 ARBG firmware, in my about phone it still says VZW/VZW/XAA. Is this set by the SIM. Will this only change when I put a different carriers SIM card into the phone?

My UICC is locked to Sprint right now (damn 50 day limit) and I was wondering, if I flash this U1 rom, would I be able to edit the APN? Has anyone else done this?

That's correct, the unbranded "U1" firmware sets the carrier parameters based on every different carrier sim card inserted.
Don't worry about the VZW/VZW/XAA, for all intended purposes the phone acts as Verizon phone.
It's just a flag, but if you can't sleep over it then do this while rooted:
adb shell su -c echo "VZW" > /efs/imei/mps_code.dat
adb shell su -c echo "VZW" > /efs/imei/omcnw_code.dat

Flashing the unbranded "U1" firmware will neither unlock the network nor the APN settings if you keep using a Sprint sim.
On the other hand, if you unlock the network and insert an AT&T or Tmobile sim then you should be able to edit the APN, but then again you don't have to edit it because it gets set automatically based on the type of sim inserted.
Thanks a lot, quick question, i have an at&t "U" model, manage to install the U1 software (wanna get rid of all the at&t apps), everything its working just fine, but when an update comes to the U1 model, can i install it the regular way on odin, or do a need to follow this steps again??

Your Milage May Vary. I have a factory unlocked S9. When you flash firmware there are risk, don't hold me accountable if your Knox gets tripped some how. People hose their phones in flashing accidents then say someone gave them wrong info.

I wouldn't blame you lol, yes I know there's a risk. But you have stated earlier that you flashed a firmware and it didn't trip knox, so I'm wondering if you flashed a carrier firmware "U" on your SM-G960U1 device..

I'm glad to report that after flashing the Sprint firmware on my unlocked S9+ worked no issues and knox was not tripped. Now I've noticed that even though the Sprint splashscreen didn't show up at boot, while in setup the phone did detect the exact carrier I was on (Boost Mobile) and the phone showed the Boost Mobile splashscreen upon reboot and all the Boost Mobile apps as well as some bloatware loaded onto the phone as if it were a phone I purchased through them.
So if I flash my tmobile device to the u1 firmware can I then root my device and put twrp on it?
Is any root method available for the t-mobile version?
I can't seem to find a straight answer to what phones will get VoLTE and what markets have been turned on. I have an unlocked Note 8 in the Nashville market. I'm not certain if 1) the market has VoLTE yet and 2) if my phone will even have the ability to use it. Does anyone have any insights? I'm asking because I'm wondering if I need to flash to the Sprint firmware in order to even get VoLTE.

There's no downside to doing it other than the bloatware no but you can easily get rid of the bloatware without using any apps.. There's a way to uninstall them via adb using a computer.. It's not hard. And unfortunately you have to use the N950U version because N950U1 firmware doesn't have it and probably won't otherwise it would have already been on it by now I would think but it's not and I'm on N950U1 firmware and don't have it not even on the latest update..

Problems are:

I can't speak as to the origin of your phone, buy it from someone else, and you're buying someone else's problems.
Unlocked bootloader and carrier unlocked are two distinctly different things.
Carrier unlocked means that you can use the carrier of your choice. Unlocked bootloader lets you flash images to you phone, from entire monthly security updates to a custom kernel, root, and do other fun things. Google Pay will not work with an unlocked bootloader unless you root the phone and hide that from Google using root-based trickery. (Standard Google Firmware)
The fact that your bootloader is unlocked means that it probably is NOT from AT&T. Why you seem to be carrier locked is a mystery to me, but I will tell you something, AT&T is probably the most evil carrier to deal with. My phone was purchased directly from Google, my first act was to unlock the bootloader, root it, then get the phone up and running with T-Mobile. If you don't want to root your phone, have no need for it, whatever, yes, it is possible to relock the bootloader. Be aware that this will wipe your phone clean, and you'll be starting fresh.

Google has very comprehensive instructions on how to lock/unlock your bootloader, flash factory images, take OTA's etc..
Be aware that if you aren't sure what you are doing, flashing a factory image can also wipe your phone, and you'll be back to square one if you don't backup your stuff.

Weird part is that If I go to system-> updates I see an update from ATT:
"ATT Redfin RD1A.2008..."
So this is not a "pure" google pixel? It has an ATT image? Can I install the genuine pixel 5 image?
You sort of do. If your bootloader is unlocked, and you get yourself decoupled from AT&T, you can grab the latest firmware directly from Google and flast it. There is no difference between the AT&T "model" and the generic Google version in the hardware. I don't know what's AT&T is up to these days but the AT&T versions at least older phones, used to lock down their bootloader and make it impossible to unlock. But if yours is already unlocked you sho6be able to put on Google's firmware and possibly escape from AT&T.

And what about AT&T lock? Once I have official image, the sim lock would be gone? Or do I need just to flash a modem?
Hello, I'm not a developer; I've never dealt with a rooted device, but Google, Samsung, Verizon and other sources were no help, so I'm here now.
I got a Samsung S20 FE from my old workplace which was previously locked to the ATT network. I am a Verizon customer so I wanted to switch over and I purchased an unlock code from cellunlocker.net. I've reached out to Cellunlocke, but they say the unlock was successful as it is connecting to the VZW network.
I did a factory reset on the phone, put in the Verizon Sim card, and used the network unlock code provided. The unlock said it was successful, but the phone powered on with the ATT logo and downloaded all the ATT factory apps. When I go into the phone dialer settings, it shows ATT video calling, etc... The phone software version shows ATT in the service provider sw version. But it makes calls, texts, etc. and the network settings show it's connected to VZW. The problem is, that it can't access my voicemail or use wifi calling because it's set with the ATT apps and features.
I've tried removing the sim, power cycling, factory resetting, even calling Verizon and asking them to resync the phone to the network. When the sim card is installed in the new phone, VZW shows the S20 as my device, but the phone still thinks it is on the ATT settings. I've viewed the Service Menu *#0011# and it shows that the phone is unlocked.
The phone is showing a service provider software version of
SAOMC_SM-G781U_OYN_ATT_12_0012
ATT/ATT/ATT
Is there any way to force the phone to reset its carrier settings or service provider software? Also, please keep it somewhat simple; I'm learning but not an expert here!
about the only wise thing you can do is download and XAA U1 firmware (Samsung non carrier firmware) flash that with Odin and call it good.
you're getting what you're seeing because the phone won't be able to switch to Verizon firmware as Verizon actually have their own unique version of the FE SM-G781V I believe with physical differences for Verizon's mmwave 5G and the U model can't reset itself to that.

So which firmware version do I need? The model printed on the phone is SM-G781u. SamMobile has 781O, B, U, U1, and V for the 781 model.
I'd love to have it without the bloatware Verizon installs, but I need Wifi calling to work and it seems to be a setting in the dialer, rather than the phone.

flashing V would be a bad idea, 5G wouldn't work, at least not well. so that leaves U1 which is Samsung unbranded, no carrier apps at all.

I'm looking at the instructions for flashing the device and the instructions say to turn on OEM Unlocking in developer options. I've activated developer options and USB debugging, but do not have the option to turn on OEM Unlocking.
I can't seem to find a way to unlock the bootloader.

to the best of my knowledge you don't need to be unlocked in order to flash signed, official Samsung firmware. many Americans have cross-flashed their phones and none of them could unlock either.
you're just booting into download and opening Odin, it's not much more than that.

Awesome, a flash using ODIN seems to have worked; the phone is active and not showing any carrier apps or splash screen. I'm having some other issues; can you suggest which firmware combo would be best?
I used Sammobile.com SM-G781U1 with Country Code USA (Verizon) (VZW)
OR I also downloaded Frija SM-G781U1 with CSC of XAA
Will I notice any major differences in them, or just try each one and check it out?
I am in the US, using the Verizon network. We do not have 5g in the area but the phone and our verizon plan is 5G capable and I would like the option if it exists somewhere I travel to.
I am in the UK, I shouldn't be telling you anything about what firmware is gonna be best over there.
other than U1 XAA I can't tell you much. also be aware that generally you can never downgrade your firmware unless it has the same bootloader version as what you're currently using...

I can only flash something that has a matching 5th last character, that's a 4 in this case. I can only download and flash older firmware if it also has a 4 in the same place in the build number. the phone won't accept anything else.
Sammobile is good for seeing what firmware exists but it's terrible for download speeds. I use Frija mainly but that only gives me the latest version nothing historical.
@3mel thank you for all your help! I've got this device working well on the U1 software and didn't have to reflash it; the rest of my issues resolved. Thanks for your patience in helping this newbie do things to a phone I never would have attempted otherwise!
