Question Video playback : oversharpening - Samsung Galaxy Tab S8

Hello
I have just bought a tab s8+, and videos played in fullscreen seem to be aggressively oversharpened (no issue in popup view).
It is noticeable when upscaling is involved, especially when the video resolution is at 1080p or below, causing a lot of ringing artifacts (mainly white lines around black borders). The image seems quite unnatural.
One way I have found to disable this post-processing is to use VLC, and in the settings set hw acceleration to be used only for decoding (as opposed to the "full" setting).
However, this post-processing is still enabled for other video apps (Youtube, Amazon, TV...).
Has anyone noticed the same thing, and is there any setting or way (adb, root...) to correct this behavior ?
Thanks

i9000 media_profiles.xml CM10.1 framerate reduction for brighter videos in the dark

Hi, I want to create another profile in media_profiles.xml (or edit existing one, 480p for example)for recording in dark environment.
I succesfully changed audio and video quality, but I can't decrease framerate for brighter videos (camera FCor I can't press record button). I know, that is possible - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583259 (yes yes, stock rom and another variation od i9000 series, but this mod is based on the same thing as I wrote - brighter videos by lowering framerate .. and it works - I had this phone before)
quote:
If you limit the framerate to a minimum of 30fps, the video can become very dark when there is not enough light. If you lower this limit to - say - 10 fps, the video will be brighter in low light, but it will be "laggy" and because each frame is exposed longer than at 30 fps, blur will be more likely. Both is inevitable, but in my opinion still better than a black video
I will be grateful for any help, it is really important for me, because I often organizing a underground parties,
and I want to promote it, so I'm doing a video report from them and... audio quality is superb (better than S3 or S4!),
but (as I said - underground parties) it is dark, there is only a strobe, small light for artists and nothing else, so ... almost nothing can be seen on my recordings

[Tip] How to improve colors in hardware accelerated video playback

This was supposed to be a question when I was writing it down, but the writing process helped me figure out the solution, so I think I'd just share it as a tip
Nexus 7's display isn't known for good color accuracy, but at least for viewing pictures, it's looks reasonably good.
Unfortunately, when it plays video with hardware acceleration, the colors are completely washed out. Here are my findings:
1. Software video playback looks acceptable, but hardware video playback looks horrible.
Android 4.3 built-in video player: colors completely washed out
RockPlayer2 hardware decode: colors completely washed out
RockPlayer2 software decode: reasonable colors
MX Player hardware decode: colors completely washed out
MX Player software decode: reasonable colors
2. It may be confusing, but screenshots of any of the above hardware decoded video also have reasonable colors.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a video using Android 4.3 built-in video player
2. Pause the video
3. Remember how washed out the colors are
4. Take a screenshot using the power button + volume down
5. Open the screenshot - the colors are much better now!
(In fact, the screenshot look just like the software decoded video.)
Since the screenshots of the hardware decoded video is good, I believe there is nothing wrong with the hardware decode algorithm. I'm guessing that Android somehow switches the display to a special mode when you use hardware decode, and that special mode has very poor color calibration.
As this point, I suddenly remember that there was a "disable Tegra screen dimmer" setting in the franco kernel. I tried that and... bingo! Now hardware and software decoded video both look reasonably good
You could also disable Smart Dimmer in Trickster Mod
Strange color calibration
I have the exact same problem on my ASUS Memo Pad HD7, but that is not even a Tegra device. See screenshots.

S10 Won't recognize HDR video files while playing them

Hey!
I recently downloaded a few mkv HDR files to the phone, but when playing the files, it didn't activate the HDR feature (washed out colors and bad contrasts) in VLC or the native Samsung video app. How come and how can I watch HDR content? (It does work on YouTube HDR videos...)
Thanks!
HDR content is HIT AND MISS. Some will look fine after adjusting the brightness and contrast, some devices require Auto Brightness and Iris to be turned off. and sometimes a codec can fix the problem....
Have you tried using KODI and adjusting the hardware and software codec settings?
But honestly, HDR on a 6 inch screen isn't doing you any good. 1080p Will consume far less data and will look the same on that tiny screen. Unless you're using HDMI out to a screen over 50 inches, i don't see the need...
HDR has nothing to do with the resolution (and the fact that you should be watching it on big screens). HDR is about dynamic range and the color range which is perfect to watch on a high-end screen of a premium smartphone display like Galaxy S10.

HDR on display P30 pro

Hello, XDA!
Can I include hdr forever on display on p30 pro?
It only turns on if you watch hdr videos.
TL;DR: I don't know, but it would be very unlikely - see below for reason.
Probably not, as it requires the source material to be HDR. So that means EVERYTHING needs to be HDR to achieve this. Your backdrop, menus, every single app, every single app icon - EVERYTHING. Add in to this that, currently, still images rarely have the 10-bit colourspace applied, along with a lack of dynamic brightness information that HDR video utilises - add in to this that most apps are developed for all displays, rather than specific ones, it would require developers to include both 8-bit colourspace and 10-bit colourspace variants of their assets, likely more than doubling the size of the apps required.
Huawei could, in theory, implement some kind of on-the-fly HDR conversions/ upscaling, but from experience with HDR TVs this rarely works well, so would probably make the display look worse rather than better - add in to that the processing overhead to do this, along with the brightness (as explained below) your batter would die quite quickly. So whilst I don't *know* for sure, I'd be incredibly surprised if such a thing existed.
Not to mention that HDR only works at near peak brightness, so you would also have very reduced battery life.

How to fix oversaturated youtube video?

I've noticed that my display's brightness automatically increases and gets oversaturated when viewing videos on the youtube and twitch app in fullscreen. When the videos are playing in portrait mode, display is normal but once the video is switched to landscape mode the oversaturation happens and this doesn't disappear even if you switch back to portrait mode...Display reverts back to normal only after exiting the video.
This effect seems to be subtle in lifelike videos but becomes really apparent in gameplay and other animated videos. The twitch streams look so cartoonish that it is impossible to enjoy gameplay streams on my mobile. Fullscreen videos from Chrome browser dont seem to be affected by this.
Is anyone else affected by this? Is there any solution?
Two things I recommend disabling if you encounter this:
- Under display, go to "screen colors/pallet" and change it to whichever color temperature you prefer (automatic is enabled by default)
- Check if you have "reading mode" enabled

I've already turn off the reading mode and choose screen colors to automatic but its still seems so oversaturated or its just software bug?. But if iam watching it on 1080p its just like hdr video
I was recommending you to disable automatic colors, that's why I believe colors are too saturated, you can change temperature too if you want. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
