Galaxy M31 GSI - Samsung Galaxy M31 Questions & Answers

I am using Samsung m31, Exynos 9611, this phone is Project Treble supported. Does anyone tried GSI?
As it is running on exynos any chance?

Yes, it runs. I am currently using Corvus OS on M31s.
Install TWRP as mentioned for your device and then follow this guide
How to flash a Generic System Image (GSI) on Project Treble supported devices
So your device supports Project Treble, what does that mean for you? It means you can flash a Generic System Image such as LineageOS or Resurrection Remix! Enjoy AOSP-based custom ROMs! Here's a guide on how to install these ROMs.

Can you explain how you installed corvus os on m31s?

Thanks in advance

Installed TWRP as mentioned in the forum.
Followed the steps for TWRP way of installing GSI in the link of my precious posts in this thread. Normally, boot into the GSI. That's it.
PS - Only Corvus OS allows SafetynetBypass. I have tried it on phhussons GSI and haven't been able to pass safetynet. Even dabbled with magisk hide prop config. Wasn't able to achieve anything.

Also, no GSI provides stable experience for long term as the stock with root. I am now running stock on my M31s as I need a working phone for use.

Ok, do we have any bugs with corvus os?

Yeah, you might encounter some unstability. But overall experience is really good. The phone is responsive most of the time. You could try if you want to see what it is. I haven't gone back to Corvus, ever since Android 12 update came, so maybe the new firmware might have added some fixes.

Yeah, I'm fascinated by the responsiveness of the corvus os. And this new android stock update is eating up more RAM. And I feel one UI 4.1 is not good as 3.1.
I'm thinking of weather to switch to gsi or not.
For long usability, what do you think will be the better option?
Switch to GSI or reset the existing stock rom user data?

Have you root

Have you rooted your phone? If you have, give the GSI a try. If not, try following ONE UI Optimization guide on xda itself. Then, decide, whether you want it or not. I use slightly debloated ONE UI 4 rooted and with certain floating feature tweaks and build.prop tweaks as well. It has given me good mileage, but not as much as the Redmi Note 5 Pro, when I installed Superior OS A12 on it. But it will be definitely better than factory.
Edit spelling

You could always try another GSI. https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki/Generic-System-Image-(GSI)-list

Don't expect VoLTE on exynos on any GSI. Calls work OK.

What's the problem with the original ROM?

HI,
it's my first post here, i've bought a xiaomi x4, 4gb ram version, and i'm wondering which Operating System should i use in my phone; i come fom an iphone 4s so i'm glad to have the opportunity to install an open-source SO. I see lots of costum roms and really great stuff but i use the phone just for the browsing, e-mails, messages and phone calls so the phone has to be fast and stable; Reading around shows me that costum rom means "eventual problem with stability and functions...crashes.." and so i'm questioning myself, what's the problem with the official xiaomi global rom? does it have logger or something? and maybe it's possible to install a fresh standard version of an android open os or it has to be "coded" or "ported" for my xiaomi hardware?
Thanks in advance for any answer
Official MIUI is full of bloatware: China apps, useless Google apps, Facebook and MS office preinstalled and such. For your need, I recommend trying Resurrection Remix 7.1.2 if you like the look and cleaned from any xiaomi apps, else try xiaomi.eu MIUI ROM, or MIUIpro rom for unbloated software with good performance and battery life. without sacrificing features.

thank for the reply! ok definitely no official xiaomi rom! i'll give it try...but i have another question Can i install a fresh/clean (possible with no adds) installation of a supported os and then try to learn to add/delete my suitable features? and what's os do you recommend?Nougat? Oreo?

Not really. Try to get used to one. I'd recommend miuipro or xiaomi.eu rom if you want to stick to MIUI. If you want to try AOSP Nougat, I highly recommend official Resurrection Remix 7.1.2. On Oreo, I dont know, you could try Pixel Experience or Nitrogen. But I recommend sticking to Nougat, either MIUI or AOSP.
ok i understand! i think i'll gonna try miui rom.eu and Kernel Clarity, they seems interesting! and for AOSP did you mean This?
Well if you are just a casual user, i would recommend you to stay with the latest official miui rom. Its the most stable, fast and snappy rom for this device. Its ui is similar to iOS.
As Far as bloatware is concerned, if you can unlock its bootloader, boot(not flash) twrp through pc, flash magisk and then uninstall all bloatware.
Else just put them all in one folder and cut off background data for them.
I personally won't recommend you to flash custom rom unless you want to taste pure Android ui because custom roms are not as refined as official roms.
Rest is upto you!

this seems to me a wise advice! thank you! but what about just the kernel, it's the same argument? i think i'll start with your solution, baby steps!

yes and no. If a custom kernel is providing you a feature which is very essential for your usage(like fast charging or something), you can go ahead. Else there is no problem with stock one.
Another thing is stock kernel is GENERALLY safe from technical viewpoint. Custom kernels may/may not be safe because some of them just experiment with the device's voltage and other essential values which were earlier optimised scientifically. Flashing those may not be safe at all. So do your research really really well before flashing anything custom coz they might damage your device (that's rare, but still!)
---------- Post added at 02:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:10 AM ----------
Also, whether you step into this flashing world or not, never forget to backup your stock system, boot, efs and recovery. I have had experiences where my device just got dead without any reason. And that too without tampering anything. Everything stock with no flashing and locked bootloader.
Try AOSP ROM for pure android experience. (I'm using AOSP Extended with Oreo 8.1, work like a charm!)
finally my phone has arrived and i figured out that i bought a redmi NOTE 4x...to which section do i refer on this forum? the redmi note 4 or redmi 4x?
By the way i have a miui global 9.5 and i like it, very fast and smart! i don't see "chinese bloatware", what did you mean exactly?

How can i do all this things?

2 Questions

1) What is the most reliable ROM besides Miui for staying powered on overnight? I have had many ROMS here spontaneously power off when unplugged an plenty of charge?
I cannot afford to sleep in an piss my bosses off by not hearing my alarm lol.
2) Has anyone thought of combining Mattofthedead's MOD kernel and a GSI?
Because a YouTube creator #highonandroid has found a way of getting almost any ROM to boot with his MOD. Miui or ASOP.
Why not a GSI seeing they are faster than traditional zip ROMS.
Just an idea

answer to option 2:
I have used several GSI, but only with base FW and Vendor from 9.8.1 base
I don't know if the mod you name Is any good.
Perhaps you can try yourself and tell us
GSI is used and worked is Oxygen OS (PIE)(Erfan's GSI)

I would like to say that the most reliable ROM is actually the Official one although it's a bit outdated, but a very big new update is coming soon (with Android Q and MIUI 11)
In term of Custom ones I would say the Revolution OS one is pretty good, I used it a lot before

Which is most Stable and Secure ROM ?

Hi Guys,
I am currently on official ROM on my Redmi 4X. I want to install custom ROM. I want stability and security
Could someone please suggest the best ROM I should opt for ?
Android 9 based ROMs are more stable than Android 10 but that doesn't meant Android 10 ROMs are not much stable but Android 9 may not have latest security patch. it depends upon your need.
I would suggest you for Havoc OS both based on Android 9 and Android 10.
Just last month Redmi 4X got 4.9 kernel and many Android 10 ROMs started supporting it which is great. in my opinion you should give it a try on latest Havoc OS.
If you want a custom roms for a daily use then Lineage os 16 is the answer. Yes Los dosnt have any "awesome" extra feature but it is very stable and secure. Another good rom for daily use is Pixel Experience.
The two rom I mention may not offer crazy customization, awesome "extra features" or the most up to date kernel (4.9) but for daily usage they are the best imo.
I use Los 16 with no root (22 april build), its clean, light and quick. Most importantly I'm lucky enough to pass the safetynet with it so I can use my device for banking, pokemon go, netlflix, snapchat and many others.
Edit:
FYI if you want to use a custom rom you must prepare yourself to not be able to use banking app. Even if you dont root your device you may not be able to pass the safetynet on a custom rom. Safetynet is what google use to check wheter your device is "safe" or not. Of course you can find a some workaround to "bypass" the safetynet but I wouldn't recommend you to do it because it may pose a security concern.

I also narrowed down to Linage OS 16 and pixel experience ROM. I have some follow up question:-
1- You mean other custom ROMs may not be able to pass the safety net. But linage OS 16 able to pass safety net, right?
2- I saw official page but not thread on XDA for official linage OS 16? You directly refereed to official page?
3- Have you tried latest (10th June) build of Linage 10 OS?
3- I want Android pie based Pixel experience ROM which I suppose is more stable then Android 10 based. But on official page it have only android 10 based download link. Could you pls share the download link for android pie based ROM ?

1. No, most rom "should" be able to pass the safetynet if you don't root it. But.. it doesnt mean 100% you can pass. Even if you use the same rom as me it doesn't mean you'll pass. In the end it all boils down to "how and what u use" to flash the rom and luck. Im speaking from personal experience. Not long ago in another device, I changed to a custom rom and I cant pass the safetynet even tho I dont root it.
Fyi I just changed to Pixel Experience plus in my redmi 4x and I'm still able to pass the safetynet. It's luck really.

3. Yes I tried the 10th june build of Los 16 before switching to pe plus (android 10). The 10th june build as far as I'm aware of is almost the same with the 22th april build. It just have the newest security update and under the hood improvements.
I have 2/16 redmi 4x with goodix fingerprints. I dont have any fingerprints issue with the newest official pixel experience plus. I have tried other android 10 custom roms briefly and I dont see any issue with fingerprints. Ironically when I installed Los 16 (22 april build) my finger print dont work, I restored my persist backup to fix it. No matter what dont forget to back up everything.
I dont have official pixel experience pie. But I do have an unofficial pixel experience plus pie(android 9), I have not tried this rom yet but If you want I can share it.

There were issue with Goodix fingerprint sensor but as far as i remember it's been solved. my device has FPC fingerprint sensor so had no such issues.
I haven't seen anyone complaining about fingerprint sensor in recent few weeks so i can say it is working fine.
If there is any ROM specific issue with fingerprint that someone talking then i don't know because currently i am on Havoc 2.9 and since last week i haven't checked respected ROMs threads and its discussions as i was busy.
4.9 Kernel been added to Redmi 4X which is greatest thing ever could have happened with device, actually i wasn't expecting it as Redmi 4X is almost a 3 years old device.
4.9 kernel improves overall performance of device and basically you can expect even longer support for Redmi 4X in the future.

After trying PE for a few days here is what I have to say about it
Pros:
- as expected, it has more features than Los
- google assistant is quite usable
- surprisingly I don't see much difference in battery life compared to lineage os.
- overall it's pretty good and stable ROM
Cons:
- now I'm using havoc os because it can't read my third Sim card(it can read my other two just fine)
- Small font, the biggest font size it has is still smaller than the default font size in LOS. This issue affects me pretty heavily because I do hours of reading in my phone. In Los I can read for whole days without problems. But in PE after only reading for few hours I'm already at my limit.
Summary: PE is pretty good. But unfortunately it can't read one of my sim.
Additional info:
Using Lineage is will encrypt your phone, if you have decrypted your device, flashing Los will automatically encrypt it. Some twrp or other custom recovery can't read encrypted phone.
I use this lovely unofficial twrp by pranaya 2005, the maintainer of Pixel Experience for santoni. MOD EDIT: Telegram link removed, please read the STICKY!
If you have encrypted device, your phone will ask for password. Most android 9 Roms don't ask for password. Most android 10 Roms (pixel experience, havoc) ask.
To fix this issue just go to twrp -> wipe-> format data.
It'll decrypt your device but remember to backup everything cause it'll wipe all data on your device.

Hi,
I finally decided to go with official lineage OS 16.1. Can you pls check me steps? Because, I am hearing lot about persist backups? fingerprint issue etc.
How to take persist backup?
Should I also take ROM backup using TWRP?
1- Unlock boot loader using official Mi software.

How to take persist backup?
Should I also take ROM backup using TWRP?

Yup...
0. Pick a day where you're absolutely sure you wont need to use your device for a whole day.
1. Unlock bootloader (I unlock my device unofficially cuz I hate waiting period. But I still recommend you to do it the official way).
2. Flash twrp (or any other custom recovery you like)
4. Back up everything via custom recovery. It may take up to 11 gb of storage so make sure you have more than enough free storage in your external sd card. If you dont have enough storage just backup everything except system partition which take a LOT of storage.
5.PRAY TO GOD
5.1. Use lucky charm(s)
5.2. - 5.9. Do everything you think may help with ur luck
6. Wipe Everything
7. Flash rom & gapps(if it isnt included in rom).
9. Reboot.
10. Enjoy... or not.
Note:
- it is what it is. Do it at your own risk.
- if ur fingerprint dont work and nothing happens even tho youve restored your persist back up. Go to thread about Los 16 fingerprind doesnt work created by me, there I gave link to a solution that works for my device.
- If 30-60 minute passes n ur phone hasnt boot then your phone maybe stuck in a bootloop. Go to twrp and reflash or try another rom. For me it usually takes less than 10 minutes to boot.
- if ur phone suddenly dies n you cant boot, fastboot or go to recovery. First, calm down. Take the back of the phone off carefully (you dont want to accidentally tore the fingerprint cable off). Try disconnect your battery from the phone n reconnect it. Then try go to fastboot or recovery.
- if reconnecting the battery dont work use edl mode (just search for edl mode redmi 4x for a guide).
- If edl mode dont work go to phone service. If they cant fix it just buy a new phone.

After trying PE for a few days here is what I have to say about it
Additional info:

Hi, sorry to bother you. Do you think you can upload the recovery you mentioned? Looks like the original link has died.

which havoc os version you are using on redmi 4 ?
I Am facing lot of problems with custom Rom such as usb not connecting to pc,middle touch not functioning , calls not working . I've done factory reset my device and everything working fine except phone not connecting to pc.
I don't know how i am possibly going to unlock bootloader it it's not going to connect pc.
i've updated pc driver and work through all solution, i think the problem is with miui stock rom 11 update as the same issue is posted on other threads.
I'm afraid I will also need to switch to a Custom ROM sooner or later, although my experience with santoni Custom ROMs was not too good. There was always something broken - be it Deep Sleep, GPS fix or fingerprint sensor.
At the moment I am trying to decide between
Resurrection Remix 8.6.x (Android 10)
Havoc OS 3.8 (Android 10)
AICP 15.0 (Android 10) - although an older version ~1 yr ago did not work too well
LineageOS 16.0 (Android 9)
and don't know what to choose. Stability and battery runtime are most important, I also need some basic customization, but no senseless bulls**t like animated unicorns running over the screen or things like that.
Which of the beforementioned work(s) well?
If someone still reads this...
I've tried RR and Havoc. I liked both and did not find any major bugs during my short tests, but the fact that full device encryption did not work is a big no-go.
Now I'm on LineageOS 16.0 official (with older Android 9) and despite the fact that there could be some more features and customization possibilities I am very satisfied with stability and performance. Encryption worked when formatting userdata with OrangeFox-R11.0_0-Stable-santoni and afterwards using OrangeFox-R10.0_3-Stable-santoni.

Custom rom for SM-T510 ?

Currently I've lineage os on my tablet (t510), I'm searching for something else more stable and with a bit more functions.
Any ideas ?

If you want roms with more function, try heading over to the project treble section of xda and flashing some GSI images. Currently using phhusson's stock Android 10 with go gapps but you might like to use a ROM with more features.

Wow that's a interesting section, actually didn't know that thing existed, can I ask you how project treble works ? Also what does GSI mean ?

Based on my current understanding, project treble aims to make it easier for OEMs (like Samsung) to update android. Here's a more in depth read about project treble: https://www.computerworld.com/artic...ect-treble-android-upgrade-fix-explained.html
A GSI is a Generic System Image that can be flashed on top of existing vendor code. So it makes it easier to change/update your android OS without companies like Samsung having to modify their hardware compatibility code (that's the goal anyways) which leads to faster updates.
For us enthusiasts, that means we can flash the same stock android GSI ROM, lineageOS GSI ROM, resurrection remix GSI, etc. on any phone supporting project treble (all devices that came out with android 9+ & some android 8).That's the same GSI file on any device with a recent version of VNDK. It's not all perfect for compatibility yet, but I've yet to run into any issues.
Yup! As @Roarmaster said you can check out Project Treble page. I too use GSIs and have flashed 3 GSIs so I can recommend you some. In project treble section for AB devices search for Bless GSI, it has lot of customization and works quite well, selinux enforcing, megisk safety net passes and google play certification all by default.

Thank you for the tip, this sounds like an interesting option. I'm looking at flashing a custom ROM onto my SM-T510 in the hope of improving the performance as the multitaking on the stock rom isn't great. Can I ask have you been flashing A, B, or A/B ROMS? I've installed two different Treble checker apps and they gave conflicting results.

Flash the rooms from the A/AB section of project treble. When checking for treble compatibility, use the app recommended on Phusson's GSI page as most GSIs are based on his work. If you want to flash a ROM, make sure you flash the arm32-binder64-ab version (like it says from the treble app) for the SM-T510.
Amazing! Thank you for the info and links @Roarmaster, I really appreciate the help. I've known about project Treble for a while but I've been out of the custom ROM scene for quite a few years, so I had no idea you could flash like this. I'll give one of Phusson's roms a go. Thanks again!

Question Is there no OS that really stable for this phone?!

I've tried MIUI 12 and 13, they're both trash!! There must be some shortage for each version!! Even the last version of MIUI 12!! Come on Xiaomi!!
Actually I like the hardware, but the OS???!!!
Any body could give me a suggestion for which OS is the most stable??
MMX custom rom, debloated, still based on MIUI
i m Wait pixel experience stock rom without root.
If u want performace, i will suggest oxygen os or if u have a low end phone, you can try roms of other devices having same chipset as yours. but u need to modify them a bit.
MIUI is terrible, yeah.
I recently switched to PixelExperience GSI and it's pretty good.
Auto brightness is a bit finicky and logging into your Google account can be annoying if you use SMS for 2FA, because SMS don't work by default (it's just one switch in settings).
But there are no crashes and it's way less buggy than stock.

GSIs (Generic System Images) are universal for all devices supporting Treble. All devices released with Android 9 and later are required to support it.
"Classic" ROMs are built for specific device only.
Here's a guide on how to install one:
How to install custom roms (GSI) 11T > Pro
How to install a gsi onto your Mi 11t > Pro This will wipe your phone and I'm not responsible for any bricked device's. you can always go back to stock and try again. Clean install suggested! 1.0 Start with downloading things Latest...

The is an urgent need for a good software
I´m having crashes and reboots like every hour since I got MIUI 12.5
Does anyone else have this problem?
Would you recommend to flash the firmware again or to go with a Custom Rom?

Never had this problem with this version.
Try to reset the phone.
Flash firmware with Miflash.
Flash a Xiaomi EU rom.
Waiting for paranoid for 11tpro, as of now magisk is not working normal so switched to Stock OS
If I were you, I prefer flash custom rom like: Xiaomi.EU
Much more stable!!
