Thanks to [FLASHER] [v1.3 - 2014-07-07] FlashCast we got reliable recovery and from my point of view it's the only way to make Chromecast unbrickable. From my point of view it's the major advantage of rooting Chromecast.
If Chromecast is unbrickable why not to make Eureka - stock with updates disabled and Eureka Mod people can revert to any stable version if they'll feel that new versions will not suit them.
Questions:
Does anyone use any advanced features of Eureka Mod?
Is Eureka Mod OTA the only feature of the Mod people use?
Is it time consuming to compile stock with updates disabled?
Can anyone but Eureka Team compile Stock with updates disabled or Eureka?
Yes it's possible to unroot Chromecast - Eureka Team can provide you with revert-to-stock firmware.
i don't see the point.
doing all that seems like way more work than just keeping a parity with extras (that you don't have to use). you can stop updating or jump around on versions of eureka already...

[HELP] Developing a new Kernel for CM12.1/AOSP.

Hi,
So I've taken up the task to make a new kernel for Moto G 2014.
So if somebody could help me out in giving me different mods and tweaks ( BTW I'm still new at this).
Progress:
Updated Cyanogenmod Kernel msm8226 to Linux 3.4.110
Added a couple of new governers.
(I don't know how to 'change?' I/O shedulers).
Oh yeah if you are going to help me then please tell me how to add that feature to the kernel source(Just the terminal commands or link me to the page which tells me how to do it. Like I said I'm a newbie at this)
If somebody could help me out I'd be really grateful.

BACKGROUND
I wanted a kernel for My Pixel that had 'all of the things', it didn't exist... So I'm working on my own kernel. I try to balance Security/hardening, experimental features with high Performance and battery life. <- not an easy task! ... Some of the security features do come with overhead, but if you use apps that are CPU heavy / processing and/or require low latency - they will perform well (at the cost of chewing some battery life, of course).... Battery life and SOT are very reasonable though.
WARNING / VERY IMPORTANT: This kernel isn't compatible with installing TWRP ~> meaning; you must use the fastboot version of TWRP (used in RAM) , flash the kernel and NOT install TWRP to your system (the kernel is too big for TWRP to co-exist).... This may sound inconvenient, but there are a number of valid reasons to avoid reducing a kernel's size in order to support TWRP installation, in the boot partition.
***Fun facts on this subject below => in the 2nd post: PLEASE READ: to understand my motivation***
TWRP REMOVAL
*To remove TWRP from your system; You need the stock boot.img from your running/current firmware (which is inside of the factory image zips) or use the Nov Stock boot.img provided here. Then it's as simple as flashing the boot.img to wipe TWRP;
fastboot flash boot_a /path/to/boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b /path/to/boot.img
Stock 8.1 July 2018 Boot.img => https://github.com/nine7nine/Apps/raw/master/SailfishStockJulyBoot.img
Now you can proceed with using the TWRP fastboot boot.img to flash my kernel, magisk/supersu or whatever else....
Fastboot twrp boot image => https://dl.twrp.me/sailfish/twrp-3.2.2-0-sailfish.img
WARNING: This shouldn't need to be said, but we did have someone who did this, so I'm adding a sticky/warning here; do NOT EVER re-lock your bootloader after flashing any kind of custom software, kernels, etc to your device - *it will brick your phone*. Meaning you are screwed would need an RMA / replacement device ... everyone in the XDA community should know better, but still; worth mentioning....
IMPORTANT:
Before asking questions; Please read through the thread (starting with the last few pages) - I shouldn't need to be repeatedly answering the same questions over and over again. It's good practice to get into the habit of reading through threads before asking questions in any thread on XDA, as more often then not; you're question has probably been answered. Thanks!
EXNS-EAS KERNEL DOWNLOAD:
JULY 2018 OREO 8.1 RELEASE exNoShades-eas Kernel Flashable zip
https://github.com/nine7nine/Apps/raw/master/exNoShadez_eas_v2.8.2_f94351f.zip
It is stable, high performance and very responsive...
Important: You will need root; I don't support non-rooted devices && some features require it. I recommend using Magisk; https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/beta-magisk-v13-0-0980cb6-t3618589 ...
NOTE: Make sure to flash the latest Magisk beta *before* flashing the kernel zip. ...
More Background / Important Notes:
Binder_RT:
My own port and re-implementation of the Binder Kernel Driver; a slightly modified version of The AOSP binder.
Binder_RT uses rt_mutexes as opposed to mutexes for locking in Binder, ion, ashmem, etc... rt_mutexes support priority inheritance and should improve determinism in Binder, speed up IPC, Ion and Ashmem => Allowing applications that require low-latency, tight deadlines, low jitter and deterministic behaviour to perform better ~ This re-implementation is proving to be the great for those types of applications. The goal here is to help ensure that the Kernel and Binder's high priority && time critical threads and tasks are properly prioritized... Example; audio buffers arriving on time / no buffer underruns... *Further development work is planned to research, experiment with and improve Binder_RT.
rt_mutex documentation, for those interested;

https://github.com/nine7nine/Marlin_exns-eas/blob/EXNS_EAS/Documentation/locking/rt-mutex-design.txt
CPU-Boost / Input Boosting:
Touch inputs boost CPU frequencies (thus improves performance and responsiveness).
# Cpu-boot / Input boost settings
write /sys/module/cpu_boost/parameters/input_boost_enabled 1
write /sys/module/cpu_boost/parameters/input_boost_freq "0:1363200 1:0 2:1900800 3:0"
write /sys/module/cpu_boost/parameters/input_boost_ms 100
IO/ CPU Governors:
This kernel doesn't include a thousand io/cpu governors. IO-wise; CFQ is the default, but we've got a few in there. chose your poison, but know that the majority of my testing is centered around cfq and deadline. CPU Governor-wise the common Linux CPU governors are there; along with Sched and Schedutil....
Stick with Schedutil - on idle, it draws very little power and in most 'peak performance situations, it should do very well..... I'm getting great battery life, sot and performance.
Managing Kernel Settings:
Get EX Kernel Manager - my original code on github was forked from EX kernel, before rebasing it - but EXKM will give you access to 99% of my kernel's settings.

Donations via PayPal very much appreciated. I do put a significant amount of energy and time into researching, development, testing / QA and also providing support/help to end-users... It's definitely not mandatory to donate; but If you appreciate the effort, see value or benefits from using my kernel on your device and can afford to; Use the "Donate to me" button or the below link... It makes a big difference. thanks!

Why TWRP Installations are NOT supported:
CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=y
(and why I'm not using it!)
Most custom/android kernel devs are using the above configuration in kernel compilation, which is arguably very BAD... I understand that boot partitions are small and the desire to install TWRP to them, thus there is a need to reduce the kernel's size....and yes, this will achieve that - However;
1. SUSE, RedHat, etc (Enterprise linux) disable CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE -> it's original use case has proven to be invalid. Even Google (in their own documentation) advise against using this; https://source.android.com/devices/tech/perf/boot-times ....
2. It suppresses useful compiler warnings....
3. As SOCs have become more powerful, google has come to the same conclusion that Enterprise Linux did back in 2012.
4. by turning off CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE, we achieve better performance, boot time and better cache utilization.
Clark Williams / Redhat Bugzilla said:
* Cause: CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE set with assumption that smaller code would yield hot cache lines and good performance
* Consequence: this config caused gcc to generate jump-to-jump code which causes cache line bouncing, hurting performance
* Fix: turn off CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE
* Result:slightly larger kernel but better cache utilization

(The Above is quoted from Clark Williams, A Senior Software Architect @ RedHat -> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=796297)
I know of no other way to significantly reduce kernel size. Disabling some debugging, unneeded features, etc helps - but not enough.... I am focusing on optimization, using newer builds of GCC/Linaro, performance enhancements, fixing compilation errors, etc, etc -> these things are more important than trying to support TWRP installation. Therefore; I do NOT support installing TWRP....
I like it so far, very good kernel.
Awesome! Always nice to have choices
I've seen you post around that you made x change to your own kernel, glad you finally made it public!
Does it have all of franco's wakelocks blocked by default?

hey, it includes franco's wakelocks stuff. I don't think all are blocked, I actually don't touch them in my init rc. ... but some are blocked by default, for sure. can be set by user...
yeah, I've got my kernel to a point now, where it is somewhat unique && is drawing in most of the best features from every custom kernel for the pixel (my opinion). very stable too, thus far. so makes sense to make it public.
it's got the RCU (read copy update) infrastructure from linux-4.9... a ton of core, sched, Walt, etc from linux-4.4+ (specifically, from EAS-Project / msm8998 OP5 - which was painful to backport. wish we didn't have a 3.18 kernel. lol) afaik, it's the only Marlin kernel with Dynamic Stune Boost and aside from CopperheadOS; the only marlin kernel with a subset of the PAX/grsec kernel security enhancements and the Mac randomization... also has all of the audio enhancements from the kernel ur running ?

Hey! thanks for testing it out. let me know how things go, your impressions, etc.
I'll be updating this kernel constantly, so if u end up liking it; you can expect that it will always include security patches, linux LTS incremental patches, etc...
it's my daily driver, so i keep on top of it.
Superb! Thanks for clarifying.
I will give it a run when November update releases cuz I'm lazy >.< but am excited and looking forward to it ^_^

no probz. As soon as the november updates arrive, i will be adding whatever patches are needed... so expect that to be there...
i also pull from Code Aurora msm-3.18 for 8996, so my kernel gets updates to drivers, core, etc that google hasn't picked up yet.
Just Testing 3.18.79 + latest Code Aurura updates for today ....AND;
re-enabling a hardening feature that I thought was draining battery life (Likely not, was probably another removed patch - that isn't in the current release.)
I'll update the link later on and - on my github; where I link to for downloads; there will be older releases labeled - ie:
exNoShadez_eas.zip (current release / link) will become -> exNoShadez_eas_3.18.78_oct.zip,
when it is replaced by 3.18.79 + other updates / patchwork.... The current release will always be -> exNoShadez_eas.zip
UPDATE:
While I haven't updated exNoShadez_eas.zip link/version, * I have posted a zip with the above changes - I'll be testing it for a while before updating the link because it's hard to gauge battery life without a lot of testing / time spent.... So I would say, if anyone is eager - they can test it, but wait at least 12-24hours from testing the current available release - so you can actually make some sort of real-usage comparision.

All good, man.
It only makes sense that I would share my kernel, when I felt it was ready for that - just keep in mind, that for now - I have marked it as Beta / Testing, as it's pretty new (although, aside from the EAS code / Dynamic Stune Boost - the rest has been thoroughly vetted)....
So yeah, give it a run, let me know how things go! thanks
Unsure if I am doing something wrong or not, but when I try to flash your kernel I get an error stating : "New Image larger than boot partition. Aborting...."
EX Kernel flashed fine. Using TWRP 3.1.1-1

Why aren't you using the newest stable version of TWRP?
RC1 = release candidate 1
afaik, latest release is 3.1.1-1 stable for the pixel.... https://dl.twrp.me/sailfish/
Using an old version might be your issue. Update, then try.

Can confirm this, I'm on 3.1.1-1 too and got this issue.
I'm running 8.0.0 (OPR3.170623.008, Oct 2017) build.

kk. I'll look into this - I (obviously) do not have this problem..... What firmware images do you use?
I'm on Rogers/Canada, maybe the boot partition is a different size on some firmwares (?)....
I can also look at shrinking the boot.img, which could fix it. My boot.img is slightly bigger than the shipped boot.img and I do have an idea on how to shrink it a bit, you'll have to wait until later on for me to look at it though / not home right now.

Maybe it's caused by the image size. Other custom Kernels are sized bout 13mb.
I'm running the Google Stock Build OPR3.170623.008, October 2017.
Hope you can fix it - TIA!

I'm using the latest twrp-3.1.1-1 (but and idk if this makes a difference or not), I only use the twrp fastboot img (Ihave ZERO reason to actually install TWRP on my system).... and also, Others have installed and are using my kernel - so it must be a difference in firmwares / boot partition size (or image size)

If you like (and happen to have that image kicking around, you could send me the boot.img and I'll compare it to mine? later on)
I'm thinking it's not the kernel size, although - I do plan on making the kernel smaller on production builds, by reducing a lot of debugging that really isn't needed on a production build (I already have a defconfig for doing so);

Reporting bugs
Important: Read the bug list before posting. Anyone can add bugs to the list, just follow the rules.
If you have questions, ask them in this thread: Xperia XZ Pie ROMs Questions and Answers Thread
Don't make me ask you for logs every time!
I will repeat the rules again here:
Rules:
New bugs must include version where error popped up and which oem version you are using
Only reproducible errors
Should include adb logcat (linked in a pastebin service like https://del.dog)
Must include clear description what is wrong
If it is a visual/SystemUI bug, only report it here
If it is an internal bug(e.g. fingerprint crashes device), report it to the Sony bugtracker as well!
Always try to fix the bug yourself first! Then submit a pull request to Sony
Must search if error has already been reported (bug tracker, this document, dev buglist)
If you've reported the issue somewhere else already and just want to track it here as well, add a link
Before reporting a bug, always make sure to isolate it. That means, wipe everything, install only the ROM without GApps and Magisk and see if the problem still exists. Only then report the bug!

In 9.11
1. Everything still works
2. Charging with plugged at screen off works
3. On gcam portrait mode and night photo gives purple glitched image
And phone seems to be faster.
Bug: 9.11 with oem v2- Clean install
- Hotspot not working
- Phone call issue - Mic and speaker not working, cannot hear anything or say anything << Listed in the bug
- Top speaker not working
Still testing.
An update
Yes, we know calling is kinda broken right now on both oem versions. Yes, we know you have problems with dualsim devices because you didn't flash the dualsim patcher. Yes, battery life isn't very good because we are testing out some increased CPU frequencies so video doesn't stutter. (you can go back to the 11-05 build which has the old CPU freqs and compare).
We're aware of a lot of these issues, and they are all tracked in the current buglist (see post #2).
Development happens mostly in the Sony open devices program, with a few heroic volunteers contributing. Right now, a lot of work is being done to get the current flagships(think XZ2, XZ3) to a semi-stable state, but work for our device is done as well.
You can check progress in the sonyxperiadev repos. E.g. recently, some changes to the telephony HAL integration have been made, see the common device repo.
Why is it taking so long to fix all this?
Sony buys many of their processors from Qualcomm. Lots of stuff in phones is proprietary and covered in patents, and you can only get the source code if you sign an NDA. So even if Sony wanted to, they could not release the source for a lot of things.
See all the files with the name "qti" in them? That's Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. See all the repos named something like "qcom-something-something"? That's Qualcomm.
When there's a problem, we have to report it to Sony, who report it to Qualcomm. This takes time already. And don't forget Qualcomm has suppliers as well, and so on and so on. The same is true for other parts, e.g. the Wi-Fi chips are from Broadcom.
Then, support for hardware stuff is on many levels. A lot of low-level drivers that are driving the hardware are on the /odm partition(the one that the oemv1/v2 blobs get flashed to). Then there is work to be done tweaking the actual hardware abstraction layer(HAL) interfaces that work with these driver blobs. Then there are kernel drivers that can go wrong and mess up. Then it can be a problem somewhere higher up in the Android frameworks. Lots of detective work.
If new blobs from Qualcomm come out, Sony itself needs to do some testing, and then releases a new oem version. It won't just magically work, we need to tweak the SODP vendor side as well. It could be as easy as changing a version to a newer one, but it could also be a lot harder. The sonyxperiadev crew knows what's needed to integrate these new blobs, but it still takes time and testing.
Qualcomm provide the a lot of the source code to work with their hardware and blobs from the higher-level Android side in their CodeAurora forum (CAF) repositories. The relevant changes then get merged into the sonyxperiadev repos and we can test if it works(or if something new is broken...).
For more info, read the Android documentation on hardware etc.
The chip in our phone, the MSM8996, is quite old already(even the SDM845 in the XZ2/3 is already quite old in processor standards). We can be luck that Qualcomm still provides support. But it's not a priority to them, they want to sell new
ones of course. That is also a reason updates can take longer.
Regarding full forced-reboot crashes:
Sadly, as of now, for some people the "/sys/fs/pstore" folder does not get populated after a crash. This is important to diagnose what happened.
You can apply this patch to force a kernel panic on every reboot, but I would recommend that you do
so only if you know what you are doing.
Regarding battery life:
Please install BetterBatteryStats
and find out what is draining the battery.
This could really help us out! But first, make sure you are not running any GApps, because the Google Mobile Services are a massive pile of battery drain.
If you absolutely have to use GApps, please run only the "pico" GApps version!
---
About the posts here:
Like 90% of posts here and in the old thread are full of people who just plain refuse to read, asking how to install or demanding someone help them out with something that has already been answered time and time again. This makes it extremely annoying for the us who have to scroll through pages of useless stuff to find the genuine bug reports. You do realize this site is literally named "xda-developers", right? If you're unclear on the concept, please read this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16682226&postcount=2441
"This doesn't work!" - "This thing crashes!" - That gives us almost no clue what is happening. We need logs, or we can't do anything about it. I have only one phone, and I only use the stock ROM. There are a lot of nice testers who send others and me helpful bug reports, with detailed explanations in what circumstances it occured, with proper logs.
With that info, the Sony open devices team and us can actually look into issues.
So please, if something doesn't work AND we are not aware of it yet, post it to the bug list (not here!) and attach a link to a log that you uploaded, e.g. to a service like hastebin.com.

I've tweaked for more performance right now, but you can use 11-05 to get old CPU freqs. Also, please help hunt down what is draining the battery, it's most likely too many held wakelocks, but it could be any number of things.

Update 2018-11-16
Some new developments are happening.
Oem binaries version 3 are out. This should give improved power management. The SODP team has also worked on getting audio handling during calls to work. A big thanks to oshmoun for his work on the audio manager. This change was introduced on the 11-15 build. The issue of no call audio when a bluetooth headset is connected is still present as of now.
Changed IRQ handling (PR by Angelo/"kholk"). This should give better battery life and maybe faster wakeup from deep sleep. But could also lead to instabilities and crashes. Send logs & pstore, see post #2. This change was introduced on the 11-15 build.
Testing kernel 4.9.137 i in progress (we are currently on .103). This means stability and security enhancements from upstream linux. Thanks to Nathan Chance who opened this pull request..
But some of those upstream changes might be incompatible with our Sony kernel, so we have to test that. Send logs & pstore, see post #2. This change was introduced in the 11-16 build. If the 11-15 and 11-16 builds are unstable, revert to an older one. But please be brave and run them for at least a day to get us logs of potential crashes.

I am always confused about "flash latest stock ftf" part about roms as a newbie.. if we flash sony's ftf how can we flash rom ? isnt it overwrite ?

Your phone software is made up of many layers. The ROMs like omni or this AOSP-based one only modify your /system and /boot partitions.
But when you update your stock firmware via flashtool, you also update your phone modem firmware, your qnovo charging controller firmware, your lower-level bootloaders etc. That is why we instruct you to update to the latest stock firmware. You could theoretically skip flashing /system in flashtool(because it will get overwritten anyway, as you've already discovered) and directly flash a custom ROM afterwards.
When you're coming from omni, there is no need to flash stock firmware again in between, because your other partitions stay the same. Just a new /oem is needed.

Again, please keep this thread about development for AOSP. The omni builds are not meant for you.
If you have trouble installing then simply don't use it.

General update
Newer builds will have selinux set to "enforcing". Most denials should have been fixed or are irrelevant. If you encounter any problems, selinux-related or anything else, please report them to the Sony bugtracker or - even better - submit a pull request to the selinux-policy repo.
Update 1: vendor blobs aren't binderized correctly atm, so no network. You can set selinux back to permissive to fix most issues atm.
The Wi-Fi hotspot has been fixed thanks to oshmoun. In newer builds, it should be using less battery.
Next thing we're going to tackle is deep sleep and battery drain. Big pain point and one of the last blockers, apart from the camera and bluetooth in-call audio.
You might have noticed that the omnirom device trees have been updated to 9.0. Nightly testing builds work fine, but they have the same issues as the AOSP-based ones.
Work is also under way to get a Pie-based TWRP recovery stable, with support for FDE encryption(this means that you will be able to back up your encrypted installations). Mounting /userdata works, but the builds are not ready for public release yet.
Update
New build up (2018-12-08)
Camera key works
Update to December security patch(12-05, r21)
Fingerprint should not crash device on enrollment any more
Allow setting lower minimum brightness
Double-tap-to-wake off by default(but can be enabled)
Plugging in charger with screen off should be fixed
Once again, I invite anyone who would like to help out or just learn a bit about building and tweaking to take a look at the sources posted here.
There will be a guide on how to build only the kernel and experiment with a custom boot.img shortly.
The build guide on sx.ix5.org for reproducing these AOSP builds should bring you up to speed, and if you need help building or just want to chat, the telegram group in post #1 is open to you.

Great job.
I already built a custom Pie kernel about a week ago to gain better performance but the charging bug was driving me insane :crying:
I guess now's the time to go back to the mighty Pie and try building a nice and hopefully stable Marrow Kernel.
Cheers
Finally a new build is out!
I can't pass safety net on latest build.
Any ideas what should I use ?
Since modules for spoofing fingerprint simply don't work.
I tried universal safety net fix but with no avail.
V 12.15
Charging working fine. But i have problem with camera, photos are very dark.
Sometimes touch screen not working and i need to switch the screen and on again.

Question New big update for GW5/5Pro

New Camera Controller feature added
Change zoom on your phone camera remotely through pinching in or out on the screen, or through rotating the bezel.
*This feature is only supported on flagship models released after Samsung Galaxy S20 or Z Flip running at least One UI 5.1.
Samsung Members
A new “Connected device diagnostics” option has been added to check the proper performance of the Galaxy Watch’s battery status, touch screen function, etc. on the connected phone.
*Please update Samsung Members and Galaxy Wearable app to the latest versions for using the ‘Connected device diagnostics’ feature.
Stability and reliability
The stability has been improved.
This update also brings the January 2023 security patch to Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. We’d expect most of these features to expand to Galaxy Watch 4 in time.
Changelog look's awsome! Anyone get?
Been checking for update still says latest up to date
How is this a big update? It's just a stupid simple app that they added. A big update would be improvement to the GPS / HR / blood oxygen measuring algorithms, which are honestly bad.

And I trust you on that. However, it is still not a big update especially considering that the app you mention works only on samsung phones.

Anyone got the update? Me not.
Not yet in USA...
How to force that update?
Not yet in Ireland...
We can not change CSC nor use update.zip...
So you have to wait for Samsung...

CSC change AND local update.zip
received the update on the watch. When I open the camera controller there is no way for me to pinch to zoom or use the bezel to zoom. GW5 Pro and S22 Ultra. Any ideas? I hate it when this happens....
Rebooted both watch and phone, still nada. I think the S22 Ultra is considered a flagship still.
Never mind. It requires 5.1, which is not here yet. Well, looking forward to it.

No update for me. I'm using a pixel 7 pro phone. Is that the reason my update is delayed?
