I ... may have bricked my Droid 4. I won't go into details unless somebody asks, but I don't think it's necessary. I AM able to get to the recovery mode though, I just have nothing to recover from.... I misplaced my back-up.
So, I need SOMETHING to flash my phone to. 4.0/2.0/I don't care, I just need any rom/SBF to make this bad boy boot again. Anybody have anything?
I saw and downloaded the first thing that shows up when you google "droid-4-system-dump-wallpapers-ringtones.html" (link doesn't work because I'm new) But, I was unable to make anything of it.... What do I do?
Just to help others avoid the same fate can you please let us all know what you did?

Well, in hindsight it was kind of dumb. I rooted it, and began to remove all of the VZW sponsored apps. Once I did that, it cleared out a lot of memory (storage AND ram) but seemed to come with the downside of preventing my "settings" activity opening up. As in, whenever I hit "menu" then "Settings" from the main launcher, it would force close behind the scenes (logcat showed the stack trace for the settings activity).
I spent the next day trying to fix that issue, copying "settings.apk" from that link I mentioned earlier to my root director, but that didn't fix it. So, I went and tried copying entire folders over. This is the embarrassing part... I hit a 'delete' button on the "system/apps" folder, got about 30 force close windows, and am now stuck in a bootloop.
Doing the "power + both volume buttons" still gives me the recovery menu, but I don't have anything to recover to, as I was stupid and didn't think to make a backup.

No files are floating around at this time. You really screwed yourself over on this one. Go back to Verizon and beg. You chose to void your warranty.

I'm curious about this too - I deleted a bunch of vzw garbage. I did make a copy of of everything with titanium backup first but when I tried re-installing one of them it just hung while another re-installed fine.
I had a similar issue with one app - I had to go into /system/app and change it form RO to RW. Once Read/Write was enabled, Titanium was able to restore the app.
I have been playing it safe and only freezing the apps, not deleting them. I have had no FC or any odd behavior. I figured with an allocated 3 gb to applications, at this time gaining an extra 100MB of storage space is superfluous...especially with no SBF available.
As mentioned above, try going to the VZW store and getting an exchange. I'm certain an .sbf will be released at some point but it could be weeks/months before that happens.
And for future reference/anyone else reading this thread...never delete system apps! Just freeze them. Yes they will still be taking up space, but they won't be using any memory and they won't show up in your launcher so it's basically the same thing...except with freezing it is 100% reversible and will still allow you to receive updates.

What is the best way to freeze apps? I know you can do this with Titanium Backup. Do you need the pro version in order to do this? Are there other apps out there that also allow you to freeze apps?

You do need the Pro version of Titanium Backup to freeze apps I believe. There are free apps that will do it (i.e. Bloatware Killer) but I am not really familiar with them.

The link that I was referring to in the first post SHOULD have every file from the D4.
I meant if he needed any of the other partitions besides the system.
I wanted to give him exactly what he asked for because he is avery sharp guy who may help us out with this device.
Unfortunately I did the same (though not as bad...I just can't open any of my contacts). I changed the permissions for /system/apps but I still am hanging at restoring in Titanium Backup. Are there any other directories that should have changed permissions to get some of these apps restored?
Also, lesson learned....freeze no uninstall

Yeah so what? Why do people feel the need to post condescending comments for no reason? Its because of mistakes and screwups that the community progresses. There will be files floating around by the weekend, I'm sure.
I'm in the same boat... I bricked by droid 4... now waiting for a sbf file... someone said go to vzw and beg... has anyone ever tried that, after bricking your phone? what did you say? and did it work?
I'm just trying to figure out how to get vzw to replace this phone.

That's the only path I had to change. Do you recall if you happened to have moved an app to a different path (perhaps to the sd-card) then removed it?
Are there multiple apps you are trying to restore? If so, have you tried restoring them one at a time?
im going to wait for the sbf files before any major modifications to my phone, then we can all start the fun
i just froze apps to prevent them from running, im not worried about space since i put in a 32GB SD card
I think it's very wise to wait for the firmware to be released, but it's worth noting that the term SBF is a mistaken reference to the old format for firmware files and that all dual core Motorolas have fastboot support now and RSD Lite has been modified to support this and uses xml.zip files that are sets of signed images rather than the Single Binary File(SBF).
This is a very important distinction to be made as the new format and boot menu provide many more options for controlling the flash process for the end user and it is ultimately much safer and more flexible.
I decided to give the new ClassicNerd ROM a try the other night, and while I didn't enjoy the ROM that much, I decided to revert back to one of my backups.
Unfortunately, Moboot still has ClassicNerd's skin and it looks utterly disgusting and I would like to change it back to the plain old black Moboot screen.
Any ideas on how I would accomplish this?

Edit: I was able to install this Moboot Theme successfully and everything seems to be working. The problem I have now is that "Classicnerd" still shows up in Moboot's options. The problem is that when you select it, it goes through the boot animation but doesn't do anything, because I assume there's nothing for it to boot to.
Any idea how to remove that option from showing up in Moboot?
Edit2: Alright. I've figured out how to remove the Classicnerd option from showing up in Moboot. There were a few files inside of ../boot/. One of which was "uImage.Classicnerd" and the other was something like "moboot.classicnerd". Anyway, I deleted those two files and Moboot no longer shows the Classicnerd option in its boot menu.
HOWEVER..I now have another problem: CyanogenMod is no longer #1 on the list, so Moboot defaults to WebOS. Is there any way to change that? I shall do more research and update if I find anything.

su
mount -o remount,rw /boot"
Then I went into /boot and opened "moboot.default" in ES Note Editor and I replaced "WebOS" with "CyanogenMod". Make sure you put an enter at the end, because for whatever reason it wouldn't save it without the enter at the end.

If you want to remove the classicnerd option from the menu then do :
Open terminal and type : rm /boot/uImage.ClassicNerd
Or if you have root browser go to /boot/ mount as R/W and delete the uimage.ClassicNerd

One last question I have yet to figure out: How do I actually change the ORDER in which the items on Moboot show up? I've figured out how to change which one is default, but how do I change the actual ORDER of how they show up on Moboot?

I'm not sure this is possible as there's no file (that i know of) that has order preferences for Moboot... Although i didn't really figure out how Moboot does that yet

if by updating binaries u mean updating SU then I tried but it didn't let me because it says I need root... WTF? I tried checking under options -> developers options and put it to root abd+apps and still nothing is happening... :/
Open the SuperUser app itself, and check your settings there. Something might be changed.
Me, I use the Prompt option, and every once in a while I have to remove an app from the accepted list and let it load itself up and prompt me again. Maybe that'll help you (I hope).

Wow. Dude. Where do I start?! Thank you!!! This has plagued my kids tablet for months. Finally, this evening, I thought I would try and do something about it. This boot loader has been causing this tablet to force close after boot for months if it was left to boot up on the 'default' Classic Nerd ROM option (after I flashed another ROM).

Can somebody please tell me how to get rid of the annoying software update that has been coming the last week?
Is there way to somehow either change my software number to trick the phone into thinking I'm updated or perhaps I should update? If so, how?

Using a root file explorer and freezing the updater app manually would probably be the safest (personally I like Root Browser by JRummy hasn't been updated in awhile but if ain't broke it don't need to be, and it is a tool I know will always perform these critical tasks correctly)
By freezing the the system updater app in the following way, you will be able to easily reverse the process using the same process. While there are some mods that can hide the notification itself (eg.: Xposed FW), this method completely disables the update check process, thus freeing up system resources. Twofold if you look at it this way imo, rather than adding potentially harmful additional resources.
# Open your root fs explorer
# navigate to fs root:
/
# then to:
/system/priv-app
# locate the file:
Updater.apk
# append ".bak" to the file name. In other words rename it to:
Updater.apk.bak
# note: no need to mess with it's .odex file, it never hurt no one. Also depending on your fs explorer and personal settings, the app's icon thumbnail has likely changed to a blank white square/unkown/generic file icon and is totally normal.
# profit and celebrate the newly liberated space in your notifications and don't forget to miss that pesky "remind me later" pop up.
#should there be an update that your are feeling compelled to (try) and install simply remove ".bak" from the files name and proceed as usual. Note that the only thing you should be changing in all this is +/- ".bak" from the file name. Don't go trying to change this or other apps file name. It don't work like that. I'm gonna chime in here and I know you're trying to help but this really isn't helping because you didn't actually freeze the app like you said. All you did was change the apps name so now when the system actually calls upon that app it's simply going to error out and actually cause it to use more resources and not less as you said albeit it will not show up anymore but that's not the way to stop it! If I go into /system/priv-app and change Phonesky.apk to Phonesky.apk.bak the play store is going to break and then send me the error to my screen every second until I fix it and that uses more resources and the only reason you're not seeing the error on the screen for the Updater is because it's doing it behind the scene in a log. Now the real way to stop this app is to actually really freeze it or uninstall it so the system actually knows the app is no longer there and there are plenty of apps in the play store that can do that.

There is a boot partition I flash ROMs in.
I need some tools on my PC combined with SDK and Motorola drivers to allow a USB-Debuging and flashing.
And sure as always once your bootloader is damaged you are lost, so I understand even backup will not help here.
So I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Step 1: I have never used it. Didn't even know that it existed. On the internet there are numerous people who uses it and it seems to work. Maybe someone else can give some info about this or just try it. U can try it with a non-important app and see if it works. Just backup it, delete it and restore it.
Step 2: This works just fine. But do know 3 things:
1. First root: To get root on stock rom, u need to use kingsdroot methode afaik. And that one sends your IMEI to some rare ip adress. I personnaly don't trust this and stay away from it, but there are many people who use it.
2. Xposed requires a recovery to install the framework. It can be done mannually or by the app i suppose. With only root u don't have a recovery on your device that can perform such action.
3. If something goes wrong only a full restore with RSD-Lite can most of the time help u out. Because u don't have a recovery that works than.
Step 3: We only have 2 full roms. 1 for JB (stock) and a working CM11 rom (kitkat).
Only the Jellybean roms support fm-radio, on every newer rom fm-radio is cut out of the audio firmwares. The risk of going to this is even less as Step 2, because u can do a full backup and restore of ur phone. ( I would chose for this if u want to play a bit with the phone and ur warranty is already out of years)
The gereneral idea about the android architecture is this (it is different for almost every device and the Razr I has many more thing to hold into account, but if u are here only for the roms and xposed, there is no more to know):
Bootloader: Is like an uefi bios for PC, but then for android. It also contains fastboot
Bootimage(boot): Has all the info like kernel and ramdisk to boot the system
Recovery: Is like 'boot', but boots into the recovery partition that lets u change every aspect of the device if u know how. Its mainly used to flash a custom recovery to, backup and restore a nandroid backup and flash/wipe roms, mods, (all/specific) data and packages.
Systempartition: Is the system the boot boots into. It's android.
Datapartition: Where all the user data is stored.
Cachepartition(dalvik): Where all cache is stored and in earlier android versions also dalvik. But not now anymore.
Fastboot: To flash/wipe the above partitions and many more (needs drivers)
Adb: To push, pull, command things in system or recovery (needs drivers)
Sdk: contain the abd and fastboot packages, but aren't needed for adb and fastboot because with the right drivers can work on there own (see the internet)
If u have a custom recovery and only change things on the system, data and cache partition there is almost no way to damage the phone. There is always a backup through recovery. As long as u stick to the things u can do in recovery.
The only thing tha can mesh up your phone beyond repair is doing wrong stuff withint the bootloader and other inner parts in the phone(like i did to get newer kernel working) or u are in bad luck and you internal memory blocks. See 'Super brick samsung phones' (emmc error).
I suggest:
- Unlock your bootloader
- Install custom recovery
- Make a backup with the recovery
- Do what u want, xposed on stock rom, try CM11?
- If things won't boot, restore through recovery
And always, read up before doing anything. There are thousands of articles about android, flashing things, repairing android, using adb and fastboot. AND ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN!

always having a backup seems not to be that easy.
So I unlocked my boot loader and tried to install twrp2850 and twrp2860 via mfastboot.
The mfastboot with 533.353kB caused the following "(bootloader) Variable not supported!"
I rebooted into bootloader and tried recovery -> horizontal Android man with a red !-rectangle
After reboot to normal power up my phone seems to be in factory reset, all my data is gone :crying:
ok crying dosn't help so I looked around and tried with another mfastboot 186.178kB and recoverycwm6.0.5.1.4.img.zip

I did a backup with cwm is there a change to get back my data? I think I know the answer.

So I unlocked my boot loader and tried to install twrp2850 and twrp2860 via mfastboot.
The mfastboot with 533.353kB caused the following "(bootloader) Variable not supported!"
I rebooted into bootloader and tried recovery -> horizontal Android man with a red !-rectangle
After reboot to normal power up my phone seems to be in factory reset, all my data is gone :crying:
ok crying dosn't help so I looked around and tried with another mfastboot 186.178kB and recoverycwm6.0.5.1.4.img.zip

I did a backup with cwm is there a change to get back my data? I think I know the answer.

Than u know the answer, it is no I think.
Both twrp images should work just fine, but always chose the latest. The message "(bootloader) Variable not supported!" doesn't do anything So don't worry about that one. There should be a lot more in you log that the message if twrp didn't install. U did extract it and flash it with the command: mFastboot flash recovery <recovery-image>. Where <recovery-image> could be C:/users/*/Downloads/recovery.img.

As I asked already I installed XPosed and Permission Manager, but I found XPrivacy might be the better solution and switched to this.
(Today I do not have all the technical background to judge whether it is technically equivalent, but I'll investigate on it)
Esp. one thing I'm wondering, why XPrivacy is reading my Contacts once I check the permissions of an app?
But the more important thing I recognized differences between CM11 and the Stock ROM. One is the Entry
"Privacy" in the settings. It seems to be more or less the XPosed and XPrivacy, or?
But it seems the Restrictions are not shared, so I can restrict in the one and do not see the restriction in the other tool.
So first is there a risk to use both, is it useful or just doing the same twice.

That's a sentence.
Why XPrivacy needs it i don't have a clue. For that sort of things u need to be by the dev of the app.
CM has a lot of features out of the box compared to stock, but stock is most of the time a bit more optimized in terms of proprietary stuff like camera.
So as u noticed, CM had an inbuilt security app. This app (CM) and XPrivacy don't share there settings, so that's the difference u see. But most likely if u disable something in one of the apps it is disabled even tho the other doesn't say it because it doesn't know of it.
I don't think it will be a risk. They both do the same thing, but they don't know about it. To be on the safe side, just use one and restore the other to default. U can always search on the web if they don't get along.
U can now make a full backup, so everything can be reverted and your data should be relative safe.

thank you again - I now find the answer by reading in the development part of the forum. For me as a beginner it is sometimes not easy to interpret the discussions there.
If accepted I will use the thread now as a kind of diary, may be some other users will have similar destinations and my learn from my mistakes.
So to answer my question a little more detailed, but with less background know how than Hazou. Pls. do not trust me I'm a beginner, I have not analyzed the code just the behavior - feel free to correct or contradict my words!
The XPosed is in the area of permissions just a framework which allow other modules to put some code between an app requesting permissions and the Android core granting this permissions. The Xposed it self doesn't handle settings or permissions you did in modules like the CM Privacy, Permission Manager or XPrivacy.
As a result I came to the same conclusion it is not a risk, but an overhead to have more than one pice of code between the app requesting permissions and the Android core. -> My proposal: Do not use more than one of this Permission control apps in parallel.
From the privacy perspective the Permission is just a starting point, it allows you to hide your private information from the app. On the other side many apps will need access to the data to work and most of them are able to connect to the internet.
So I realized the next step would be the restriction of internet usage of apps. Here permissions are sword but we need a scalpel, to separate the necessary from the unwanted connections. This scalpel could be AFWall+ and "Netzwerk Log", this is a firewall and a sniffer.
What I can say to day the apps run on CM11 installed on my Razr I.
So it looks like I see my destination raising on the horizon and I will try to formulate it in the following order:
1.) Hide Contacts, Calls and SMS from Apps who do not need this to work -> XPrivacy
2.) Disable some Android features I think I don't need.
(e.g. Captive Portal Check - settings put global captive_portal_detection_enabled 0)
3.) Restrict the internet access of some apps to servers they need to connect. ( e.g. E-Mail client is restricted to connect to the mail server)
4.) Limit the access to my pictures, stored on SD card. [I have not found a solution so far]
If you read this I think 1 is reasonable for most of you, even if you do not have deep Android or Network know how (as I have), you just restrict the permissions - if app crashes or doesn't do the job you expect you may permit access or uninstall the app. (XPrivacy allows you also to fake data)
3 is a usual task of a network administrator, if you are used with iptables it is just work. I'll try to find out whether there is somewhere a source of "Templates". Usually the network admins share there common settings based on services, once I find out I'll post.
To restrict the access to SD Card I only see the change to extend the sandbox of Android to the SD and to hide files which does not belong to the app. As I would store my pictures on SD as I would store my Navi Data, but neither the Navi app should see my pictures nor the Cam and Gallery my Navi Data. ...
I don't know whether there is an app out there but It should be possible the same way like XPrivacy fakes the other data.

Most of the time I used the numbers to just put in the extension, so if I want to call 0049 9876 54 321 I put the numbers 321 the Motorola dialer will show a list of all contacts where the number contains 321.
Some Numbers of contacts are not shown as well, seems if a contact has more numbers only one or two are shown.
The CM11 dialer doesn't show the number, is there a setting to get this feature?
I tried to get my Stock dialer back, so I copied dialer.apk from stock into the /system/sec-app/ directory of the CM11 and restarted the phone -> doesn't change the dialer ....
Any proposals? I'm terrible sorry for my stupid questions, I read several threads and still no idea about a possible solution

Stock CM dialer doesn't have that function afaik. The moto one doesn't work because it needs the Moto framework to work. Just download a dialer U trust from the playstore.
I don't have any clue about the secure storage, sorry.
I'm looking for a module to be created, or if I could do it not sure. Something to do the same as "lockscreen disabler" did in Xposed. Willing to donate. App in question for exchange email is "Email MOTOEMAIL.00.05.0072". Currently running XT1254, 6.0.1, stock rom. Thank you.

maybe it is enough if you download the module-template edit config.sh and module.prop to an ID if your choice and in config.sh also the REPLACE part with /system/app or priv-app/Lockscreen/ ?

First, that's not a donation you're talking about, it's a bounty.
Second, if it can't be done without Xposed, it can't be done with Magisk. So don't hold your breath.

What? I don't think you understand what the REPLACE part of the config.sh file does.
During installation, that little entry puts a file called "replace" in each folder listed, in the module folder structure. Every time Magisk mounts a module and finds that file it will completely wipe (systemlessly, of course) the corresponding folder in /system.
If you want to replace a file on your device with one you've edited, all you have to do is to put that file in the module zip, under the same folder structure it can be found on your device. After that Magisk's Magic Mount will do it's thing...

that could be true. do not have any device older then nougat and can t try the xposed-module.

From what I can tell it disables the lockscreen while tricking apps that require a lockscreen into thinking it's enabled.
Easy-ish with Xposed, impossible with Magisk unless you manually edit the app in question to not detect the lockscreen state and then use a Magisk module to mount it to your device.

That is correct. When i opened phone before it just had swipe up to open. Now I have to enter lock code every time. I haven't done anything with adb before, always do everything from the phone. I've seen the apk "exchangenopin" but I can't try it, cause I can't download the apk anywhere. Those from other thread seem to go to ad sites. I figured that it wouldn't of been that difficult because the exchangenopin "supposedly" works w/o Xposed. That's why I was hoping for a module. I found something to replace my "insert custom text" module from Xposed, now just need something to replace for lockscreen. Lol. Liking Magisk though.
I experienced the same problem with my realme 5i smartphone, I tried to install the latest Magisk via the OrangeFox recovery because I had never rooted my smartphone before. but I have installed pixel 5 archipelago project. In this case, after installing magisk and successfully entering the lockscreen, here the problem occurs because I can't enter the lockscreen PIN and can't do anything, I can't even turn off my phone. But here I found a solution, namely using a google account and trying to wipe data via the Google Play application, namely find my devices and then delete it there and it worked for me
