ZorinOS is a stable and user-friendly distribution. I installed it on the laptop of my syster-in-law a few years ago and she has no problem at all. It's her first GNU/LInux distro, she was on Windows before.
I didn't try ZorinOS 16 myself but it has great feedbacks as far as I know.

I installed it in a VM. Everything works well for the moment
Great start up menu. The virtualization is detected and ZorinOS automatically suggests to install the guest additions.
This is to confirm that ZorinOS supports the user so clearly a good distro for new GNU/Linux users and people who just want a stable system with less command lines.

I've tired lots of different versions of Linux/Slackware for the last 15 + years, some are good some are better than others. I've dual booted before, but I've found for me it's best to have separate PC's to keep them separate. Windows/Linux. But I'm running the zorin os on my main PC.
I agree, this os good to go, simple easy, think I'll keep for awhile.

HDD transplant?

I'm finally replacing my dell inspiron 600m with a shiny lenovo x61. the x61 comes with *shudder* vista, so i want to downgrade to xp. Problem? the x61 has no cd drive. my plan is to replace the hard drive of the 600m with the x61, install onto the x61 hard drive, and then replace back into the x61.
Would there be any problems with this? Baiscally, i'm just doing a clean install of xp onto the x61 hard drive. Are xp installs dependant on hardware? I would just use the generic drivers that are installed with xp.
In case you wanted to know, here are my x61 stats
Core 2 duo- 2.2ghz 800mhz FSB 4mb L2 cache
2gb DDR2-5600 RAM
12.1' XGA screen
120gb 5700rpm HDD
Lenovo wireless abg
Intel X3100 integrated graphics
Crappy size appropriate sound card and speakers
I got it for $850, i saved $600. Coupon codes ftw! </bragging>
it wont work, the second you put back the hdd in your x61 it will BSOD . Because of the different drivers of the different drivers, your best bet is to get a external USB CD/DVD drive and use it with the x61 to install windows.
i thought the hard drive access drivers were generic to some extent

I agree......spend some of the $600 you saved on a USB CD+DVD/RW drive - you're bound to need it at some point
Moving drives between machines is a bit of a black art - sometimes it will work (and you'll just need to reinstall all the hardware specific drivers) and other times it will BSOD or just hang part way into the boot. Can you not borrow a USB CD drive from someone/somewhere just to install XP with (and to use to copy the CD contents to the hard disk - or at least the "i386" folder - you KNOW you'll need it again )?
That's just my opinion - IMHO it would be so much quicker to install in place rather than messing about for hours/days doing it some other way....
Mark.
eh ok, i'll get one. good point about my $600 lol.
A core 2 duo will install wayyy faster than a dothan anyway.
in other news, this is one of the few threads i've made where i've gotten 2 responses wtihin a day of creation. cheers to y'all

Installing good ol' Windows XP on a relatively new laptop...

So, everyone
My laptop is annoying me to death because every single time i boot Windows, be it 7 or 8, i can't stay more than 30 mins without getting to Tmax and the laptop turning off. I'm currently developing a game in XNA GS 4.0 so i need Windows for the game to be done...
Question is, can i install Windows XP on my Acer V3-571G laptop with the following specs:
-Intel i5-3210M 2.5Ghz, Turbo Boost @3.1Ghz
-nVidia GT630M 2GB GDDR3 128-bit (Fermi GF108)
-Intel HD4000
-Atheros AR5BWB222 wireless a/g/n (i actually NEED this as Ethernet is already used by an old Linux PC)
-4GB RAM DDR3
-500GB HDD (must set it to Legacy mode for XP setup to boot)
-it's either Realtek HDA or Dolby Home Theater audio
-15.6" HD screen

You can install it on whatever PC that meets the minimum requirements.

Just don't expect to be able to find any drivers. Your GPU will not run, neither will the WiFi, and if you're using a really new system, not even your motherboard.

how to make computer with RPI 4

how to make a computer with raspberry pi
yes
The RPi4 is a computer. Simply flash a MicroSD card with Raspbian, Manjaro, or even Windows on Raspberry. If you want, try putting it in an Argon One V2 case. It'll be a mini PC, kind of like a Mac Mini.
and if it's a Rpi4, look at twisterOS!

Is it viable to install Windows 8.1 on a laptop from 2021?

I hate hate hate Windows 10, and don't even ask me about Windows 11. Unfortunately that's what all new laptops come pre-installed with. I love my current laptop but it is just slowly breaking, the USB ports are erratic, the Wi-Fi drops, and sometimes it bluescreens and crashes in the middle of a session (hardware error). I found a seller who says that she can install Windows 8.1 on a new laptop for me, but I'm doubtful if it will work. The hardware may not be supported. The laptop is a 2021 model, I copy & paste the description she sent below:
DELL Inspiron 16-5625-R1705S AMD Barcelo R7-5825U/16GB DDR4 3200MHz (8Gx2)/512GB SSD/16.0" (1920x1200) 16:10 WVA LCD Narrow HD Anti-Glare 60Hz
LBL 300nit/No ODD/Win11 with Office H&S/AMD Barcelo-U UMA/2Y Carry In/4 Cell 54Whrs/MediaTek Wi-Fi 6 MT7921 2x2/Mcafee 15M/Backlit KB/Cam
I really like the AMD Ryzen mobile CPU. I also like the full-size laptop, I need a workstation not just a media consumption device. Is installing Windows 8.1 fresh from CDs going to work on a 2021 laptop like this?
It should as far as I'm aware. The only concern is the drivers though highly likely it can work
Windows 8.1 cant be run on any newer laptop. I tried on multiple cheap laptops from 2018 to 2020 and all of them give bluescreen. Maybe with some patches it can work
I'm not sure if it will run perfectly, because driver support and windows 8.1 will also be closed by windows in about 1 year. I think maybe you can adjust some settings on windows 10, like download drivers on the official website, check whether there is a virus or not, etc.

Use dual graphics on Linux / Windows

Hello all!
So I've been using Mac for the last years and really enjoying it, but now wanted to use Linux (more specifically Fedora) as my main OS, rather than MacOS.
The machine for doing so it's a late 2013 15" MacbookPro with NVIDIA graphics.
For getting everything setup it took a while as a lot of drivers are proprietary, but manage to get most things working (expect for sleep, that for an unknown reason is broken and the Mac takes more than 5 min to wake from sleep, and FaceTime camera not working).
The problem however is that the machine is using the NVIDIA GPU, which causes it to get very toasty and drain battery faster.
I would like to enable the iGPU, but keep the NVIDIA GPU available as sometimes I connect an external monitor using the HDMI port.
I am newbie to Linux and have little knowledge but want to try everything possible to make Fedora work as best as possible on my computer. The procedures I tried were:
-Install rEFIND and try to use an set_apple.efi thing but probably did it wrong and did not work,
-Try to modify NVRAM variables to make the mac use the iGPU by default, but when booting to Fedora still only show up the NVIDIA GPU
Any help is welcome, bur please don't say for me to stay on MacOS or that is impossible as I read from people who manage to succored.
Thanks in advance!
