Question Official Samsung watch blood pressure support for US? - Samsung Galaxy Watch 5

The rest of world can do blood pressure stuff with the watch 4 & 5, but not the US. I hear it was a FDA regulations issue that was blocking things got sorted out. Any solid info or rumors on when an official release to make it work? I've seen a few hacks floating & at least 1 rumor after talking to a customer support person saying on official release was suppose to be in December. But as December is almost over that seems dubious. Not planning on fighting with side loading, rooting & what not for the time being, unless the BP stuff is a long ways off.

idk

https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-enable-ecg-blood-pressure-monitoring-samsung-galaxy-watch-4/ for reference on how to do it on the Watch4. I believe it works on the 5, but am not going to be fighting with it for a bit.

Yes, that reference should work on the W5...

Not one to install unknown software in fear of data stealing, trojans, viruses... I bit the bullet and installed this work around. It in fact works great. Did the calibration and pretty darn accurate. BP measurements was the main reason I bought this watch 5 and can finally use it.,

Just a slight clarification.. there is nothing unknown about the software you installed. That guy who wrote and supports it is well known. But it's nice that you reported that you got it working. I'm waiting on the watch now and will do the same as you did. I would like the reporting too.

I understand. But side loading apps can be risky, never as safe as getting it through the play store, but yea, some bad actors there too. Google tried to verify it on download but gave me a message file too large. Recently bought 2022 Turbotax which most vendors sell as downloads and yep, the vendor was pushing a copy with malware and bogus serial number. He was using a very larger retailor to offer from. Luckily I almost always first install to a sandbox to be safe, and test, and did, Just saying its getting nuts out there.

I hear that & I'm in the same boat. Use to root, run Cyanogen, mess with bootloaders & all the fun stuff for years. These days stock usually is good enough & auto-updating makes life so much easier & safer.
Still debating if I just wait for Samsung, or break down & side load semi-trusted molded stuff.

First, works great and well needed app on my wrist. As for loading an 'unknown' sourse, Dante63 has done so much to allow us, and he keep maintaining new releases. I have his 'unknown' source since early W4 days (and I had the watch from proably the day it was released). With github release, text install files, video, github, and support for the community for free, what exactly is he going to take from you exactly? If you have Tiktok I would be more worried.. and if you get the google time line as I do once a month, this is REALLY big brother style report.. So if you connect to the internet, you already gave up on privacy.. and they know everything about you already.

Android Market Questions/Issues/Comments

market...not working for me.
Initially, I downloaded and installed pacman and shop savvy. After the upgrade came through which put me at RC28, the market doesn't seem to work properly. When I click on the app I want, it looks as if the download is happening, but when I check download notifications, it says download unsuccessful. I've tried this on several apps...all have failed.
Heads Up - Market
In case you haven't looked lately, there are a dozen or so new apps today
and still nothing worth downloading
I second that. I am about to put the g1 up until something worth a sh*t comes out. But that's just me.
when did u get the update and did u have a choice to update or did it do it automatically,i'm just curious cuz i haven't got it yet
Did you try the download with 3G on??
If not, try it with 3G
We needed a new thread for this info?
The following morning after I got the phone.....there was a window after the unlock sequence. There did not appear to be an option, it just executed the update. I've tried both wifi and 3g....both don't work.
I noticed that I am having issues with some applications in the market. They will fail... I kept redownloading them till they finally came thru.
I haven't got the update yet. I think this is just because the market is getting soo many new applications and such it probably is having hard times with it all.

I read by Nov. 2nd it getting out there, hang in there.
As long as the software states that its a trial in the listing I dont have a problem with it. Someone will write a free version at some point. I would want to be paid for my work too
Most of the apps aren't trials, and the ones that I've seen that are thus far are clearly marked.
I don't mind, since it's not some large majority of applications that are timebombed or limited trials. You would expect some people to not want to give away their stuff, and there's not a huge flow of apps just yet.
Like all open source, I'm very enthusiastic to see what the market produces in the free category - I'm sure it's going to be impressive.
I don't know if the location of were I am located in the US but the I downloaded the widely talked about SHOPSAVVY application and doesn't seem to work well. Sure its free but it doesn't give me the nearest stores and only one or two online suggestions. WEAK SAUCE in my oppinion. I also saw and downloaded (by accident) trialware which I too believe should be in a different catagory. There were not a big selection of apps that were worth my time. Dissappointed
funny you say that because I always have my GPS on and I did it while I was outside. OH'well

This is ridiculous and I dont know who to contact to fix this. All these (****ty) apps are popping up in the app store as free, but really are trials, or even ADVERTISEMENTS for the actual product you must buy. I hope who ever is running the app store fixes this. Im disappointed because they said the apps would be free until next year but developers are making their own way around this rule to charge users for their ****ty apps.
This is one of the reasons i miss my windows mobile phone so much, because of all the excellent developers who created software for free, and diddnt try to make a pretty penny.

Its BETA so developers are going to put out BETA apps for people to test then they will charge for the final product. If you don't want to pay for apps then don't. Stop *****ing the damn phone/OS just came out. There will be free apps eventually, you can't even compare to Windows(WHICH HAS BEEN OUT FOR A LOT LONGER).
I understand your anger. Trial versions in my world ARE NOT FREEWARES! It's called SHAREWARE and are completely another kind ob beast. I'm REALLY PICKY at what I'm adding to our directory of free Android software and there is no chance for a trial, shareware or a demo to get inside. I'm myself sick of all these "smart promotion strategies" by developers and I hope Googlers at Android Market will sort this out soon (but I fear they won't interfere too much). Let's see!

HDC Galaxy Note N7000/i9220 Android Dualsim Phone

After some messing about on-line I was intrigued to find this video review of something that "looked" similar to the Galaxy note.
Obviously its not the real thing as you and I are well aware but it prompted me to do some more researching.
After a few nights of checking out the different versions of the "clone" I decided to bite the bullet and buy one to play about with.
Now I don't know much about Android phones and was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice as to exactly what this phone is capable of in terms of using the android marketplace and installing generic android apps.
I am a little unsure of some of the screens. It shows that it has Android Version 4.0.3 - Does that mean it has ICS already installed?
The other thing I was wondering is whether or not there are any custom roms that will do away with some of the China/Far East apps/languages that this thing will be able to run?
I have attached some pics and also the pics that I was sent in .rar files from the supplier..
**I understand that this is not the real deal so anyone who feels like having a nice flaming session then rant away. My questions are genuine in the hope to learn something..
Cheers
It's probably the cheapest hardware around in that. Don't expect any smoothness and it's on the completely opposite end of the phone spectrum from the Note. Doubt there are any custom ROM for it as well, but it probably runs many apps from Play.
I don't know why you would waste money on it, unless you try to look cool by pretending you have a genuine Note. It's a bit like walking around with a fake Rolex.
Sent from my superior GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Yea for sure I know what you're saying. I know someone with a fake rolex. He has had it for many many years. It still even tells the right time
I in no way purchased it to "pretend" to have the real deal. I have an iphone already and this was more something to play around with.
I like the "open source" side to it and with my Linux background and Programming and coding firmware for Satellite TV Receivers It took my fancy as its not locked down as badly as an I-Phone.
I guess from reading a bit more I would have do dump the firmware that is already on the phone and decompile it and figure out how to edit it to my own needs and then re-flash.
Hell, for £130 if it keeps me amused and out of mischief for a few months then its money well spent.
I would rather learn on something that costs a LOAD less. Once I am familiar with the whole system structure, Tools, Terms, Apps, etc etc I will probably buy the real deal.
Take Care..
I was thinking of buying one. Are they good? Where did you buy yours? The white one looks nice.

hi mate, when it arrives I will let you know!
still beats the dell streak lol
not bad for a fake phone imo, anyone who wants a big screen on a budget could use it.
Hey I woudn't mind using this over my (screen-plagued issues) Gnote..
This phone easily beats the features of the real mccoy.
I wonder how would Sammy feel that a run of the mill cheapo phone like this has their branded logo emblazoned on it?
Watching the video mesmerized me on the myriad capabilities this knockoff can offer.
Also great music, it 'tranced' me while watching the phone's features...
Cheers!
Does it run real ICS ?
There are fake Chinese 'iFones' in the market which certainly don't have IOS.
He says in the video it runs Gingerbread which would also explain the GB in the build number.
For 130 pounds I guess it's a pretty decent phone. It has a pretty slow single core CPU and a relatively low resolution for such a big screen but in the end you get what you pay for. I'm sure it's a nice toy to play around with and for a first Android experience you could do a lot worse but since I first used my Note I'll never settle for anything less anymore
Because these types of phones are never meant for international sales I doubt there will be any viable custom roms anytime soon and I think you can forget about official updates but even stock Gingerbread is a very decent OS. You'll miss out on a big part of the 'openness' of Android though.
Once you decide to get the real deal you'll be amazed at what the real Note is actually capable of.
I guess it has 800x480 res which gives you pixels like golf balls with a 5.3" screen. That's so extremely far from the Note hi res experience...

In the movie the guy says "it's got a 5.3 inch 5-point multi-touch screen".
That's another difference from the real Note, only being able to detect a maximum of 5 touch points. The Note detects at least 10. Nothing to be concerned about I think, I've never used more than 3 fingers at the same time.

Good that you mention about the 5 touch points. I wondered what he was doing when he touched the screen like that.
How and why would you use more then 5 fingers at one time anyway? Still pretty cool that the "real" note can do 10.

Ah okay. I am already mooching about for legit ones and there seems to be a good deal on the Real Note from amazon.de for about £350
I am actually quite looking forward for the fake one to arrive to see what its like. When I spoke to the seller, he said it came with some Legit Sammy software so who knows what that's for..
Looks like it Left Guangzhou on Friday so I expect it to be here sometime before the end of this week.
I think spythedude is aware of the fact this phone doesn't come anywhere near the specifications of the real Note. Everything about the phone screams FAKE!!! But still, for 130 pounds I think it's a pretty decent device given it's large capacitive screen. I can't think of any Android phone getting anywhere near such screen size for 130 pounds. It won't be the fastest phone around but there used to be Android phones with even worse hardware that still gave a good user experience.

I've been reviewing phone and tables for years now, some are "fakes", some are not and so far my videos have been very much appreciated by the majority of my viewers

Developers: any links to best practices for Gear development?

Okay, new to this. Started up a gear yesterday and I'm impressed. Now I want to go further... (already bored lol). Any links to docs on how to develop for this thing. I already know that this it is standard Android and that one can write standalone apps the usual way for this thing. What I'm interested in is how the communication model works with companion apps on the phone. I suspect it will be done by running services on the phone, but how can one interact with those services via a Bluetooth connection. Or is it event driven?
I'm really surprised that Samsung hasn't publiced anything about this on their site? What? Don't they like developers to jump on the bandwagon?
Best advice is to read this forum you will learn all there is to know

So you think they work with special APIs? Or just the standard APIs? I saw there were already some interesting apps on the Samsung market like for example Zine. It has a controller architecture. On the Gear side you get headlines pushed and by tapping on a headline the Zine app is opened with the corresponding article. Can this can be done with standard Android APIs or do we need a special APIs for that. I can imagine that this can be done with the standard event model.

It's definitely a remarkable manoeuvre. Another remarkable thing is that everything is kept in the Samsung app store. It's not a secret that Samsung has big ambitions. Maybe they are trying to build their own ecosystem in the Android ecosystem. Maybe they gonna lock the APIs in some kind of Samsung Appstore service. Meh .. let's hope Google comes up with a watch soon and an addition to the Android framework for smart watches.
I recently tried to release an app to the Samsung store specifically for the gear but it was rejected for "other" reasons...
Seems like the public are just unknowing beta testers of a half-arsed device by Samsung.

Tried to release my Calculator app that only runs on the Gear. I've since emailed back asking what "other" reasons they are talking about.
Just speculation on my part --
I have a feeling that Samsung is simply testing waters with this initial release of Gear. They are very serious about it, but they also know that it's not entirely polished product. They wanted to be first to market.
I think the 2rev of Gear might have some radical changes. They could probably build it on top of Kitkat (optimized for low memory devices?) and some new low energy communication protocols. Probably they will then open the APIs for all devs. Maybe we will also see some of the curved screen goodness!
But it's for sure they will never make the Gear compatible with all Android by default -- doesn't make a good business sense. Google will obviously try to make their smartwatch compatible with all Android, and that makes perfect business sense for google.

November 13th Update - Anyone Had Anything Yet?

A few days ago www.wired.com and www.mobilephonereviewsuk.com both reported that there was likely to be a fairly sizeable update coming for the N5 today.
So I thought I would start a thread for this.
http://www.mobilephonereviewsuk.com/nexus-5-firmware-update-coming-week-possibly-wednesday/
Apparently Google Now will get even smarter than it currently is, with the voice-based assistant getting some sort of answering back features. Furthermore, Google Now will be able to search apps and launch them to perform tasks and show more Google Now cards based on the user’s location:
But the stuff Google says is coming November 13 is the real gravy, and it’s a shame it isn’t already ladled on. One of those things is the ability to ask you questions — so you might say “text Jennifer” and it will reply “which Jennifer,” and then ask you to dictate the message. It’s also going to get the ability to search inside applications, and launch them to complete tasks for you. So, you might search for a restaurant, and an option in the results shows up for OpenTable, which you’ll be able to fire up and make a reservation. It’s also going to use location cues to drop cards into Google Now, even more so than it does currently. At Yellowstone it will show you geyser times, for example. Sadly, none of this stuff was lit up yet, so I wasn’t able to test it. I’m not dinging the phone for that (and it’s not getting any extra credit), but given how interesting these features are, it’s kind of crazy the phone launched without them.
Mathew Honan
Wired
As we have recently learned, the Nexus 5 is more about Google Search services (Google Now included) than any other Nexus before it, not that it’s a bad thing, especially for Android users looking forward to such an Android experience. However, some of those Google Search feature – essentially the new launcher – will be a Nexus 5 exclusive for now, at least officially, so it’ll be interesting to see whether these new Google Now features will be available for everyone else or not.
However, we’re certainly not surprised to hear that Google Now is getting smarter. We’ll be waiting to see Google’s announcement next week to tell you more details about this apparently imminent Google Now update.
Wired has also learned that the Nexus 5 will get a camera update that will fix existing issues with it – check out these posts for camera comparisons with the Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5S.

I really hope that the next update will fix the current software issues too...
hmmm nothing here yet
just checked (at 11.12) and nothing
Oh boy, another rumor thread!
I will be shocked if Google fixes the camera issues this quickly. If it such an easy fix I do not understand why they would release the camera software the way it is currently.
Google just needs to by Kodak or some other company they can fix up. I am sure they can afford to purchase them and better camera's and software in phones is the future right now.
nothing
Google didn't announce a Nexus 5 update like they with the the 4, 7 & 10 yesterday. I doubt it's coming this week.

Anyway, the new rumor is that Nexus 5 will be released on November 28th because Kit-Kat posted a picture of a Turkey weighing 28lbs! That is the release date and I am sticking to it!
I will be very surprised if we get an update today or even this month.

Urbane 2 - tag

Thanks to @jinkerz9430 for voting up for us, I see its a tag not a forum, but its something.
How we add the tag? I'm in advanced editor, don't see any way to add a tag?

Is not an exact forum but it is way better than having all on the 1st edition urbane forum. So yeah. Cheers lol. Nevertheless, my watch will arrive in 3 days however, i see there is no root for it. Although, i dont think that rooting a smartwatch is actually necessary, and even less if one uses android pay (since android pay requires an unrooted device)

Yes its not yet got all the structure yet but its a step in right direction, as per my forum request the UB and UB2 are very different.
I can't seem to subscribe to it.

I see they havent even created a normal forum. i mean when you click on all forums, you see all the devices that has independent forums. Yet when you use the find function in chrome or firefox to type urbane, it just appear urbane and not the urbane 2nd edition . So... for the time being, it is recommended to save it as a bookmark for fast accessing.

now I look further its actually a step sideways, there's a thread which is useful to Huawei watch owners of ported watchfaces from the UB2 so a UB2 owner wouldnt be interested. So the tag is misleading.

when you are creating a new thread, you are always given the function to tag . its usually found on the lower left corner somewhere.

Google said late April to late May
"Watches that will receive Android Wear 2.0 end of April/late May - OTA starts end of April/beginning of May for some manufacturers throughout multiple weeks. Timelines differ per watch and manufacturer."

From my experiementation with AW2 DP on UB2, I'd say the later the better, its buggy and battery drain, so let the "lucky" earlier AW devices shake out bugs I'd say. I downloaded the current AW1.5 just in case I upgraded too early so I can go back. In my case AW2 DP rendered the UB2 unusable at times, so later = fewer bugs + optimized.
This is silly, the Apple Watch is wiping the floor with AW, app support is better, battery life is better, Google it looking more of a joke each year with those expensive Pixel phones. Some people who really want a wearable are so prefering Apple Watch it making them switch to iphone, Yep google, you made a product so bad it drives people to your competitor, way to go google, way to go....

So I've had my UB2 now for a few weeks, and I deliberately tried to push its limits, so I then know its limits and now work within its limits.
The fundamental problem is battery life, if you use it tethered to the phone, in BT distance mostly or the odd fallback to Wifi, then battery is good, I see a slow drain say 2%/hour for just notification filtering. If you try to use the UB2 AW2 capability to be a truly standalone mini-phone on your wrist, then battery life stinks, I was get 25%/hour. I played with the likes of the onscreen keyboard, the Play Store, but there were very few apps built for AW2, even the claimed Uber app had disappeared. Using it as a phone for talking, about 50%/hour battery drain and in my case it overheated and hung up the call!
The FAQ and the "support" from Google is terrible, you see they basically suggest resetting the watch as an answer to a problem and there are plenty of users complaining and its not even rolled out to that many yet.
The Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear S3 proves you get a decent product, just Google hasn't yet.
I've owned AW now for over 2 years, I have the Sony SmartWatch 3, it was doing good when I got it, then they did updates which enabled Wifi and it was really buggy battery draining for a couple of updates, now it is very good. So I'm thinking let the masses be suffered by AW2 and version 2.02 (whatever it is called) is the time to jump.
I bought my UB2 because its going to get AW2 and its only $180 or so, and so half the price of the LG Watch Sport which on paper looks extremely similar specs to the UB2.

But which version gave you the best battery life?
I'm not sure I could conclude, when on AW2 I was experimenting.
