Question Root stock Android 13 - Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2021)

I patched the boot.img file from the new Android 13 stock with Magisk 25.2. How do I relace the boot.img in the original AP tar file with the modified one? When I try to add it to AP I get an error saying there additional data at the end of the archive, which I assume is the md5 data.
edit: I installed TWRP and booted into it with no problem. But when I then booted system, powered off and boot back to recovery, it was gone.

Is TWRP available for your device? If yes, use TWRP to flash the boot image to /boot.
Even better, just leave the boot image alone and flash Magisk in TWRP.
If TWRP is not available, try this as it should allow you to use fastboot command line to directly flash the boot image.

I edited my original post to say I flashed TWRP and booted into it but the patched file was in internal encrypted storage and TWRP couldn't access it. So I booted back to system and moved the patch to SD. But when I booted back to recovery, TWRP was gone. In desperation, I flashed TWRP again and then used it to flash the patched boot. IT WORKED!!! I now have root and it retained TWRP. Don't know why it was overwritten the first time as I made sure to boot to it before booting system.

Yeah, Vaultkeeper was the problem. Magisk dynamically disables this during boot; otherwise, after flashing TWRP, you should generally flash the Multidisabler and wipe data before continuing. Among other things, Vaultkeeper will automatically replace unsigned images with the stock images, even if the bootloader is unlocked.
Glad to know you got rooted, though!
If you're interested in running AOSP without any of the Samsung bloat, check out my guide here. I have a T290 (Tab A 8.0) and it's become painfully obvious that these midrange devices (Tab A series) don't have enough power to handle a lot of overhead.

What file did you try to flash?
In most cases, you need to extract the system.img from the zip package. You can't flash the archive itself.

Magisk Installing OTA on Pixel XL 1

Hi,
I own a Pixel XL 128GB, running 8.0.0 October FW. I have installed Magisk 14.3 beta 1437. Almost everything works, except for:
1. When installing Magisk using Magisk's internal installer it always downloads MAgisk 14.0 and tries to install this old, outdated version. Is this a bug?
2. I can't install OTAs, tried following john's installing instructions...
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/blob/master/docs/tips.md#ota-installation-tips
My steps were:
* Install stock boot loader - Magisk almost immediately confirms that it has installed the stock boot image. That's a bit surprising, I don't see any flashing dialog like when installing Magisk. Bug?
* trying to update using the internal OTA fails. It takes very long and suddenly stops.
Any idea what went wrong?

1. If you wan't the current beta to install, you need to change to the beta update channel in the Manager settings.
2. You've probably done something that messes with important partitions (/system, /vendor, etc). It's enough to just mount the partition rw to destroy the ability to update through OTA.
Restoring the stock boot image through the Manager is instantaneous...
Hi @Didgeridoohan,
thank you very much for the quick answers!

Hm, how do I find out what has been messed on /system, and/or /vendor?
Does installing and using AdAway tamper with /system or /vendor?
So reflashing the stock boot image is not sufficent, correct?
And most important.. how do I fix this?

If you let AdAway directly write to /system/etc/hosts, then yes, you have a compromised system partition. If you're using Magisk Systemless Hosts you should be fine though. Do you have TWRP installed? That'd be an issue as well...
If you want to make sure that you can update through OTA in the future, clean flash a factory image (you can leave data intact) and then make sure not to touch /system or /vendor at all.

There aren't a lot of apps I am granting root. One of them is Titanium Backup. It may have tampered the fs.
Is there any kind of diff against the original folders which I can run to find out what has been tampered to possibly identify which app is causing the issues?
One of the main reasons for installing Magisk was because I was tired of flashing the entire system when updates have been released.
I never couldn't get Flashfire working properly when it comes to install updates / OTAs.

Since the OTA can check for a tampered system, I'm sure there's a way to check. Question is if it's worth the effort.
Any app that has root access can be the culprit... Could also be that you let TWRP mount system rw or something similar. Really hard to say...

Does TWRP mount system as rw by default? Because all I really do is.. boot to TWRP, flash the Magisk's zip. That's it. Nothing else.
Is there any other way I can install OTAs without using a computer with USB (and keeping root of course )?
As said... I never could FlashFire to work correctly. The documentation leaves a lot of questions open - BTW.. props to the Magisk's docs - much better.

TWRP doesn't mount system as rw unless you let it.
I've never used Flashfire and haven't updated through OTA since, 2014-ish. I'm mainly going on theoretical knowledge here... On my Nexus I used fastboot to flash the factory image (until I switched to ROM flashing in TWRP) and now I just flash the full update package that OnePlus provides in TWRP.
For a while there I also flashed the system.img and boot.img files in TWRP. If that months security update only had anything to do with those files it was just a matter of downloading the factory image and unpack those two files and flash them directly in TWRP. No computer needed (unless there was an update to the bootloader and/or radio). No idea if this is viable on a Pixel...
My main use for Magisk is that all my system modifications are still there after I update my phone. Drastically cuts down on the time it takes to set my phone up after an update.

After updating, you probably need to boot straight to TWRP and reflash root. If you boot directly to the OS, it'll automatically replace TWRP with the stock recovery.

I like to change screen density, debloat system apps, install Viper4Android, install boot scripts (LiveBoot, etc) and a bunch of other things. With Magisk, as long as I don't wipe /data, all of that will still be intact after a system update. And even if I wipe data I can restore a backup of the Magisk image or just flash the module zips in TWRP. Takes seconds rather than half an hour like it could prior to Magisk.

Hm, I am not sure if I get you right. If it is about apps, I use Titanium Backup to recover my old apps+settings.
system files
Most of the setting you mentioned are messing with the system files. "debloating" or removing and system applications with titanium backup will fail a system check with OTA update. You can freeze the apps i believe.
I changing the screen density and boot scripts. These are all system files locations.
I have had an ota work be re-installing the system apps from titanium backup and reverting all the other changes when it was failing before. Think this was back on android 6.0 though.

Since all of the things I mentioned are done with Magisk, none of them will cause an OTA to fail...
Reinstalling system apps will not work, since nowadays an OTA will fail just by mounting /system as rw.
Hi guys, trying to install latest OTA patch for Pixel 2. I am assuming process would be the same. I tried to follow the guide but hit the bump immediately. I can't see "Restore Stock Boot" when pressing uninstall. But there is restore images option. Hitting it does nothing, I receive the message that there are no backups. Where does the backup go so I can put the original file for it to be reinstalled?

[Root][SM-T590] Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 (2018) root tutorial

Disclaimer: Your warranty will be void, use at your own risk. YOU are choosing to make these modifications and I am not responsible for any damages these changes might do to your device or sanity.
Hi.
Based on the feedback from this thread, the following steps can be used to aquire root on the SM-T590. The process is quite similar to rooting other devices by using Magisk. It might also work on other versions of the SM-T59x family, which can be OEM unlocked (sorry Verizon users).
Obtain the boot image
Get the firmware that matches the version installed on your device. This is important, otherwise you can easily end up in a bootloop.
Extract the AP tar.md5 file, e.g. "AP_T590XXU2ARJ1_CL14463952_QB20043720_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT_meta.tar.md5".
Upon the extracted files, there is a file called boot.img.lz4. Extract it. Important: Most standard compression tools, e.g. 7-zip, are unable to extract lz4 compression ccorrectly. Use the offical lz4 binary from your Linux distribution or get the Windows version here. Once extracted, you should have a file called boot.img.
Patch the boot image
Copy the boot.img file to your device.
Download and install the Magisk Manager apk from the offical Magisk Thread.
In Magisk Manager settings, set the image format to "img.tar".
Enable the "Keep AVB2.0/dm-verity" in the Magisk main screen.
Hit "Install" and select "Patch boot image".
Select the boot image copied previously to your device.
Once finished, the patched image will be located in the Download directory on the internal storage.
Copy the patched image back to your PC.
Unlock and flash
Go into settings and enable developer settings.
In the developer settings, select OEM unlock, read the help text and enable the unlock, if you consent.
Once the device is factory reset and rebooted, turn the device off.
Boot the tablet into download mode.
Flash the patched boot image with Odin in the AP-slot
Reboot, Install Magisk Manager apk again and check if root is available.
Have fun.
Thanks to @gscollier, @airmaxx23 and @EinsamerSpieler for testing.

Yes, there is such problem.
I have Root Explorer app installed
When I try to move some app from "/data/app" to "/system/priv-app" (using Root Explorer) the device reboots and nothing is being saved at "/system/priv-app"
I want to make my app a system one
This method works ok on many other devices
Any ideas how to solve this problem?
I think system apps Device Security and Device Maintenance prevents me to do it.
I tried to delete them using Titanium Backup but phone reboots and they are installed again
Also there is Samsung Knox security technology

I know this is a dumb question but where do you get the firmware....
Also was wondering if that reboot thing is still an issue.
I'll still root, I would like to try the LineageOS, eventually... how well does this work with Android apps/F-droid?
Update: still looking for confirmation on which boot image to use... guess you can't do a backup before flashing like you used to be able to do.
I installed heimdall and adb both seem to work

how downgrade sm-a605fn from android 10 to 9

Hello, I have a Samsung Galaxy A6+ with latest fw installed.
(italian version)
A605FNXXU7CUD4
The phone is totally useless after the update to android 10, it takes AGES to perform any action, even open the Camera or open a Message.
Already tried to wipe everything, hard reset, reinstall fw. Still useless.
Since I’d like to downgrade to Android 9 to have back a useful phone, I tried to install the latest Android 9 fw with Odin.
A605FNXXS5BTB1
But it fails, saying SW REV CHECK FAIL : [aboot] Fused 7 > Binary 5
What can I do?
Is there any chance to downgrade this phone?
Thank you
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash custom recovery for your device.
3. Go to custom recovery (TWRP) and flash any downloaded custom rom (for your device), GSI or save stock firmware as flashable zip with tool like ClassyKitchen.
4. Flash Magisk or RMM-bypass-v3 in TWRP to protect your bootloader from getting locked again.
Backup your personal data at first, of course.

I proposed three different options: custom rom, GSI (generic system image) or conversion stock firmware to flashable form. If there's no good custom rom for A6+, then don't worry - you can still try another options. Try playing with Generic System Images:
1. Flash your current stock firmware as usual in Odin.
2. Unlock bootloader and flash TWRP.
3. Go to TWRP.
4. Wipe partitions cache, dalvik, data, system (don't wipe vendor partition - it's needed).
5. Flash GSI image (recommended will be at first phhusson's AOSP (Android 9 or 10)) as "system image". You always need to choose and download "arm32_binder64" variant of img file.
6. Reboot to your new system.
Second option is to convert stock Android 9 firmware into flashable form.
1. Download ClassyKitchen tool.
2. Import downloaded Android 9 stock firmware (for your phone) into it and save it as flashable zip.
3. Go to TWRP.
4. Wipe cache, dalvik, data, system and vendor.
5. Flash your previously done zip with Android 9 as any other flashable zip in TWRP.
6. Flash Magisk or RMM-state-bypass-v3 in TWRP to prevent your bootloader from getting locked again.
7. Reboot.
I went for the second option, in Classykitchen I loaded the stock android 9 rom and selected
BUILD ZIP ROM (for recovery).
Then installed with TWRP following your wipe indications.
Success.
But when I went to install RMM-state-bypass-v3 I got the error impossile to mount /system.
So I rebooted twrp and before anything I manually mounted SYSTEM in twrp in the dedicated MOUNT menu, and I did everything again from wipe to install.
Is this procedure correct?
Success, success also for RMM-state-bypass-v3.
I rebooted but I'm again stuck in the same loop described in my previous reply.
When I selecr REBOOT in twrp, do I have to flag anything? For example System?
Regarding the first option, if I go there:

exactly which file do I have to download among ASSETS of any release?

Yes, it's correct. If RMM bypass or Magisk.zip was flashed without any errors in TWRP then everything is okay. Just reboot to system in TWRP after that - there is option to reboot directly to system. First boot always can take a bit longer than next boots.

You always need to get any "arm32_binder64" (always AB) image. Gapps or vanilla is just your choice. Just get Android 9 or 10 image and flash it as "system image" (but wipe at first partitions specified in my previous post - don't wipe only Vendor partition, because it contains important things). Android 12 GSI still aren't stable. Android 11 - maybe will work properly. Android 9 and 10 should work fine. There is even short article about GSI on Galaxy A6+ with some fixes for that device attached:

Thank you very much, appreciated.
But something weird happens: I install the ROM with success. If then I try to install Magisk (or Rmm) it fails with error 7.
And twrp says No Os installed if I reboot.
But if I try to install Magisk after rebooting into twrp after installing the ROM it goes without errors.
But anyway I have the issues of No Os installed.

You need to reboot to recovery after flashing new system, because just after flashing TWRP doesn't recognize it - that is why you see that "no OS installed". Just reboot your phone to recovery again (you have such option in TWRP). In case of GSI (except maybe CAOS, LineageOS Q/R mod) Magisk or RMM bypass is not needed.
Btw, in case of any problems with hardware support on GSI flash also that patch in TWRP (it may be needed to mount "Vendor" partition in TWRP before flashing that fixes):

Thank you again for your help.
I already rebooted to recovery and twrp keeps saying NO OS.
I'm using twrp 3.5.2_10-0.
I'm starting to suspect that this behaviour is due to the fact that this version of twrp could be too much new and unstable for my phone.
So I'd like to install an older version of twrp with Odin, as explained here:
TWRP for SM-A605FN Samsung Galaxy A6+
How to Install TWRP 3.2.3-1 on Galaxy A6+ SM-A605FN Android 8.0.0 Oreo. Once you installed TWRP recovery on your Samsung Galaxy A6+ SM-A605FN, you can customize it, Rooting or installing custom ROM
www.recovery-mode.com
But I cannot manage to go into download mode again, even from REBOOT menu of twrp it doesn't work, I keep staying in the loop explained before.
Moreover your first option of GSI need me to go into download mode to install the latest stock ROM with Odin.
I just manage to get into the attached screen.
Any idea?
Thank you again
It's not possible to ignore that message and just flash latest stock firmware via Odin? Odin refuses flashing latest stock firmware?
Other builds of TWRP for your devices you'll find here:

But don't use TWRP older than 3.4.0, because it doesn't have support for "Vendor" partition.
Yes, I managed to ignore that screen and go in download mode again.
I tried to follow your first option since the second one was not successful.
Installed latest stock and then twrp 3.5.0-1.
Wipe as you explained, I flash the Gsi
system-quack-arm32_binder64-ab-gapps.img
The flash is very fast, but no errors, is it normal?
After that I reboot to recovery in order to flash
Disable_DM-Verity_ForceEncrypt_11.02.2020
it goes but just at the end it gives the error
failed to mount /odm no such file or directory.
And if I reboot to system the phone loops as always.
I'm losing all hope...

It's okay, but it's possible that you'll always need "vndklite" images for working camera.

If you flashed it as "System Image" and it was successful then yes - should be fine. DM-Verity isn't needed for GSI - only RMM bypass v3 is sometimes needed (on CAOS, Lineage Q/R mod and maybe in case of some other images). On usual A600FN RMM bypass is not needed on phhusson AOSP. Just format "Data" partition (format, not only wipe) - it will remove encryption for you.
Procedure of flashing should be like that:
1. Wipe: cache, dalvik, data, system ("Vendor" partition leave untouched, because it's important for GSI - that is why you needed to flash stock firmware at first, because it adds vendor files for your phone, but it's needed only once, just don't wipe "Vendor").
2. Flash your GSI as "System Image".
3. Reboot phone (to recovery again).
4. Mount your "data", "vendor" and "system" partition.
5. Flash your zips: RMM bypass v3 (optionally Magisk).
5. Reboot to your new system now.
In case of any hardware support problems, reboot to TWRP again, mount "Vendor" partition and flash that fixes:

Try to boot Android 10 or Android 9 images. If it will succeed, then you can try flashing Android 11 images and check what works, and what not. According to that article

I don't know what are those images. Can you explain better?
When I proceed with RMM bypass V3 I see the errors in the attached image. It seems like there is a problem in writing to /system.
Can this be related to the hardware support problems you mentioned?
I tried with different versions of Twrp already and with Havoc Os too.
Should I try with flashing a different ROM ?
Thanks again

Just look at filename of system images. But as I see, it's apparently important on Android 11 and newer. For now, try to boot Android 10 or 9. Let's try with that image:
https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/releases/download/v222/system-quack-arm32_binder64-ab-vanilla.img.xz
1. Decompress that image.
2. Copy to SD card or to internal storage.
3. Wipe cache, dalvik, data, system.
4. Format data partition (it's needed only once).
5. Flash downloaded and extracted file as "System Image".
6. Reboot phone to recovery (again).
7. Select in TWRP: Mount -> system, data, vendor.
8. Flash RMM bypass v3 (or Magisk).
9. Reboot now to system.
10. In case of some things not working, go back to TWRP and mount vendor partition (Mount -> tick "Vendor" -> go back to flashing zips) and flash that:
Fixes.zip
drive.google.com
11. Reboot to system again and check if now everything works properly.

Yes, because you need to mount that partitions in TWRP:
Mount -> tick "system", "vendor" and "data" - and now flash whatever you want.
The only "receipt" which isn't giving installation errors is following your last instructions but avoiding to reboot to recovery after ROM flash (used Vanilla), and using Magisk v22 with unticked the line called "skip digest check" . See attached images.
Anyway, still no success to get into android.
Also tried fixes.zip.
Maybe I have to try with sideload ?

The phone goes into loop with the attached screen and black screen alternatively.
On the top you can see SET WARRANTY BIT: KERNEL, it should be normal right?
Do I have to set something inside MOUNT of twrp before rebooting to system?

I've never had such problem, but according to that thread it seems that it's a fault of modified kernel (so don't flash Magisk with GSI, because it patches kernel).
Try to flash stock firmware, unlock bootloader, flash TWRP, format "data" partition, wipe partitions (cache, dalvik, system, data) and flash GSI image as "system image". And reboot to system.
Don't flash RMM and Magisk for now - and check if system will run properly.

Question Bootloop after Magisk uninstall - dirty flash and data rescue

Hello everyone,
I seek this forum for help to rescue/recover photos from my S21 (G991B)
I unlocked OEM, flashed patched AP + Magisk root.
Happily lived for couple of months until I updated Magisk to the newest version which dropped MagiskHide support.
And here comes my past idiotic version of me who uninstalled Magisk without backing up data first.
I quickly ended up in bootloop, with "unathorized device" in adb. I wiped cache and Dalvik cache.
So I decided to flash twrp-3.6.0_11-4_afaneh92-o1s.tar recovery with vbmeta_disabled_R.tar and then run multidisabler twice.
I was happy that adb worked, only to find out few minutes later that the sdcard is encrypted. I could not access my data, but at least I managed to do low level backup of userdata partition:
adb pull dev/block/sda34 userdata.backup
So I decided to flash stock ROM. I used Frija to download SM-G991B_2_20220309104450_uns6t6aual_fac.zip and flashed BL, AP, CP and HOME_CSC. With "Re-Partition" unchecked
This got me from G991BXXU3AUF6 to G991BXXU3BUK8
However bootloop persist. The stock recovery says "E: failed to mount /sdcard (no such file or directory)".
Now I'm getting a little bit desperate to rescue my precious data.
Do you know any other tricks, guys?
If I do full data wipe and/or clean flash of stock image with "re-partition" enabled and then flash twrp recovery and try adb push dev/block/sda34 from my userdata backup or simply writing userdata as raw image to an external microSD card and attaching it to the phone, do I get my data back in unencrypted form?
Any help appreciated.
What do you mean by "uninstalled Magisk"? Did you uninstall the app or did you flash the stock AP? If it is the latter, you could flash the patched Magisk AP on Odin and it should boot again
Decrypting the /data partition from an encrypted state is something that is not easy and I'm not sure if it is possible at all. The easiest way would be to get the device running again in the currently encrypted state
EDIT: So I think you've removed any encryption key by using the multidisabler I assume?

Within the Magisk app I clicked on “Uninstall Magisk“ --> “Complete Uninstall”. Then it ended up in bootloop.
Reg. multidisabler - not sure if that's the case. I thought hardware wrapped keys are used for full disk encryption.

Not sure to be honest. I would try to flash the whole firmware via Odin, use the Magisk patched AP and use Home_CSC to see if it still boots
EDIT: I think all Magisk does is to flash the stock boot.img upon uninstallation. But the device doesn't boot if you unroot. I assume that flashing the modified boot.img (which is inside the Magisk patched AP) could fix it

Okay, I'll try to patch the AP on another phone (Honor 8). I hope it doesn't matter. I will Install Magisk app, copy AP to sdcard and patch the AP with magisk, pull the file and flash it on S21 like you said. I'll let you know.

It works as long as both devices share the same architecture (e. g. arm64-v8a). Otherwise patching in the Magisk app will probably fail. Other than that patching on another device will work
That worked like a charm. Thank you so much for saving my data (mostly family photos and dickpics)
For anyone attempting to dirty flash, make sure you use HOME_CSC from the same firmware you have on the phone and if not, then download same U3 or U4 version (G991BXXU3....) using Frija's manual option. If you use U4 over U3, then you risk having user data wipe anyways.

How did you install it? I tried zipping it to a tar file with 7-zip and flashing it from AP with Odin but that didn't work.
Never mind. Got it with fastboot. But backup fails and that's my reason for wanting TWRP.

I didn't rename it, so that's why it didn't work with Odin. But as I said, I managed to flash it with fastboot anyway. But it still won't backup, probably because data is encrypted.

Why use TWRP when you have Lineage Recovery? Lineage Recovery is better.
Backup option work?
Plzz make for LTE variant
Just made a version for the LTE variant (modified prop.default).
Issues I've found:
Encrypted data partition can't be mounted.
LineageOS fails to install ota updates, because update zip is stored in data partition.
Backup option is not working correctly unless data are decrypted.
Mind the gapps installer fails because it can't mount system_ext partition.
Tested on my SM-P615.

#3 I would much prefer to have backup than encrypted data, if that were an option. Is there a way to keep LOS from re-encrypting data? I know that in earlier versions, once you formatted the data partition, it didn't get encrypted again unless you flashed a stock ROM. Or is this a GSI thing?
To prevent lineageos from re-encrypt data open /vendor/etc/fstab.exynos9611 in an text editor, find a line which starts with "/dev/block/platform/13520000.ufs/by-name/userdata" and remove
fileencryption=aes-256-xts parameter (don't forget to remove also the comma!).
WARNING: That should be done after wiping. The instructions are device specific!

Let me see if I have the steps right. I already have LOS up and running. I flash TWRP and boot to it. Then format the data partition to get rid of encryption. Then edit as per the above and reboot. Is that right?
This is why Linux4 abandoned TWRP for the platform. TWRP seems so problematic! Everyone should switch back to Lineage Recovery. Data is encrypted for good reason on the devices. You don't need a backup option in recovery plus why use TWRP when you can use an official looking recovery? OTA updates on LOS Recovery aren't hideous with logs and it looks official and fits with Lineage! Use Lineage Recovery, NOT this crap excuse of a recovery. Lineage Recovery can be found on the official lineage website for the official version of 19.1 and the unofficial version for unofficial 19.1 can be found at lineage.linux4.de

TWRP is unsuitable for the device because /data is encrypted therefore backup won't work and decrypting data is unsafe.

I guess you neglected to read the post that tells you how to keep LOS from re-encrypting the data partition. I DON'T WANT IT ENCRYPTED!! I have been using Android devices for close to a decade without encryption and have NEVER had a problem. I have a belt. I don't need suspenders too. (And LOS when it was Cyanogenmod.)

Due to the issues with TWRP, Linux4 might block your recovery from being able to install LOS.
