Question Any updates on Textra use? - Samsung Galaxy Watch 5

As previously noted, text messages will not show on the watch if using Textra on my phone.

You must use Samsung's text app

Huh? we use Textra on our phones, and get notifications on our watches (4 classic, 5 40mm) and can respond from the watches. There is no dedicated app for the watch.

I use Google messaging on a galaxy z flip 4. Messages come in fine in notifications, but yes, if you want to run the messaging app you need to use Samsung.

Google Message's has worked well with my OnePlus 9 Pro...

With Textra, I use a Galaxy S20+ phone. I do get message notifications on my watch but I cannot read them or reply. If I use Samsung Messages, all works well on my watch. I attempted to sideload Textra and that failed.

My results are different: Textra on my phones (Flip 4 and S22U) set as default text app. No default text app set on our watches (Galaxy 4 Classic and Watch 5) if I get a text, I get the notification on my watch, I can then select it and read it it on my watch, and reply to it from my watch using either from the list of replies or I can type my reply and send it, then on the phone it appears in Textra (as it should). If I want to start an original text on the watch, I have to go into contacts and select text and type the message and sent it as normal, and it appears in Textra on the phone.. If I try to select a text app on the phone directly it will complain that messages is not set as the default app.
I don't know why yours would be different...

You do not have to use Samsung text to get test notifications and the ability to reply or create text messages on your Samsung watch. I do not use Textra, but I do use Chomp. I too have no issues receiving notification, reading a text or replying to a text. As @larryk said, I can compose one if I go to contacts and select send text. All works though Chomp on the phone.

Did you just install Textra on your phone and start using it as normal? Or did you have to make some changes to your watch 5?

There is no Textra version for the watch, and there is nothing to do to the watch itself. I just have Textra set as the default text app on the phone and in the watch settings in the Galaxy wearable app on the phone I have the the notifications from Textra set to on. When I get a text message I get the notification on the watch, I tap it and can read / respond to it.

An update on my post using Google Messaging. Don't remember seeing it before, but after Jan update I see Google Messaging now as an app on the Watch 5, so you can choose to do texting on a native app on the watch like Samsung stock app, but use Google instead and use RCS

I have all of that set and the only notification that I get on my watch is that I have a message. I cannot actually read it or respond from my watch.

Text changes to larger text when I tap on it. That's it.

I don't know what to tell you, this is what my Textra text's look like on my watch...
Edit: Check settings in the wear app on the phone, Notifications / Advanced Notifications / Show with Details (make sure this is on).

No luck.

I reset my watch and made the above suggested changes. Still no messages on my watch when Textra is the default texting app. Again, it works fine with the Samsung texting app as default. But I MUCH prefer Textra over the Samsung app.

For whatever reason, this is now working, and I am getting notifications (texts) sent to my watch. I have not made any further changes after the watch reset. Thanks for the help.

Interesting. I can only get text messages on my watch from a single person. Group texts do not work.

[APP] [OMG] Google Voice SMS Popup Notifications

Finally, a Google Voice SMS popup solution...
Background:
First off, I definitely care about this more than 99% of ppl out there, and have been looking for a solution for over 2 years, and have posted on countless forums, emailed probably 50 developers, created my own ghetto tasker solutions.. etc
I use Google Voice for ALL of my calls and SMS (using Google Voice App and GV Callback for calls), and have since it was GrandCentral. Given that, it's driven me crazy that there's no SMS popup option to work with Google Voice... since they don't have an open API, mainly. All other SMS apps like GO SMS, Handcent, etc make you use the random Google Voice contact number and mess up my threads.
Today, I finally found an app that will work with Google Voice and display a popup for incoming SMS along with the message (screen on or off).
by developer, ProductiGeeky
Notifier Pro
is the paid version, but the
lite version
also works if you want to test it out with limited features.
The developer has also released variants of basically the same app with very slightly different features called:
iPhone Notifications and WP7 Notifications
There are lite versions available for both. NotifierPro seems to include all features of WP7, but the iPhone Notifications app has a better toast popup dialog-- which is not available in NotifierPro. However, it (iphone) doesn't have the robust features available in the NotifierPro version.
You can read the app descriptions for more details, but here are some screenshots to get an idea.
In the app description, there is no mention of Google Voice compatibility. I've contacted the developer, and think he should make a variant with google voice in mind.
BTW, you can add notifications for virtually any app (like Gmail, messaging, email, GTalk, etc) with tons of other features. The major downside is, you can only use your default notification tone, despite the fact you can customize the vibration. In the screenshots, I'm using NotifierPro with the various themes that come with the app.
Some NotifierPro features include:
• allowing you to move the location of the popup
• adjust screen off > screen on popup settings
• set if you want it to appear as a banner or notification
• choose themes
• set sleep schedules
• set repeat notification reminders, etc, etc.
Screenshots of NotifierPro app (I'm using the paid Plus version, but free also works):

}
iPhone Notifications version I mentioned
NOTE: If you're going to try this for Google Voice, it's best to turn off the audible notification in the google voice app (under Sync & Notifications) to prevent the double tone.
Hope you enjoy this as much as I do. It's got plenty of room for improvement, but it's an absolute step in the right direction.
EDIT: nothing to see here.

Lol, ya.. I did that. It's a baked in feature of Roman's AOKP ROM -- info thread is in the NS4G Dev section
Thanks for pointing this out!
I guess the themes only apply to NP?
EDIT:
Here's the one that's solely for GV: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.googlevoicenotificationslite
Mine doesn't seem to be working :-(
Been looking for better google voice support for a long time now.
This thread is a bit confusing though. If I want google voice popups, I just use https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.googlevoicenotificationslite
Not the notifier pro app, right?
I'll try this now. I'd still love a more full blown Google Voice support, something like Go SMS that worked with GV, but maybe this is a start.

+1 on that.
The Google Voice app didn't actually work when I tried it... However, NotifierPro (original post) and PopupNotifier (also from the same dev - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.popupnotificationslite) both worked. It seems like there's an overlap in functionality but all of these apps are just slightly different.
Ya, its all the same dev- if you have feature ideas, I think he is watching this thread. He's been pretty quick and responsive

tried google voice notification as well as notifier, but both didnt work for me.
Both apps basically dont even give me any notifications at all for anything, such as missed calls, text, etc. I did already checked the accessibility thingy. Any idea why? I am on CM7, HTC sensation

May be obvious, but have you tried rebooting?

yup I have tried rebooting... would anyone happen to know what "services" is needed for this app to work? I tried unfreezing a lot of my system apps but the notification is still not coming up.

Gotta give this a try, as I use GV for everything as well...

Unless you count Handcent, GO SMS, or any of those others, no, not that I've seen-- and since Google Voice has a closed API (as of now..and probably eternity), we probably won't see one. That's why I like to theme them
I used handcent for a while, but get annoyed that it ends up jacking up my contact numbers-- having to add an extra number for anyone I text, and only reflecting sms messages sent and received by handcent.

When I use Google voice notification, yes.
When I use Notifier, no.only a status bar notification comes up. But not a popup
When I do test notification, I got a white bar at the top with a test.
I don't get anything for incoming GV message.
What am I supposed to see for an incoming GV message? Just that same bar at the top?
Not really sure how that helps me too much. I still need to open the app to reply and clicking the bar doesn't even take you to GV or does it?
How exactly does this work?

I'm with you. With Sprint GV integration, Handcent etc work somewhat well but they aren't aware of the rest of my GV account/history. Switching between my PC browser and Handcent for a convo, for example.
These notifiers are a step in the right direction, but it's a little annoying that the notifiers don't get cleared automatically after I've read a msg or responded.
Baby steps though...

Did you select Google Voice from the other apps section in the settings? If you click on the banner notification, (in a real popup, not the test), it should take you to the actual message. I'm talking with the dev to work out kinks, and then hopefully build on that.
Wait, this is for the NotifierPro (free or plus version) . He pulled down the Google voice notification app because it wasn't working. One of the probs with GV not working internationally, as the dev can't test it himself.

My previous HTC's had that problem with t-mobile too. Just go into the call forwarding settings and change it manually (+1 then your google voice number) or follow the star code at voice.google.com under phones.
Sad thing is I flashed back to stock to try it there and it didn't work.

I'm having the same issues with Google Voice as well, won't change from "My Carrier". I can get it to work by going into the call settings and letting it automatically change the forwarding number to the Google Voice number, but no matter what I do I can't get it to show up as "Google Voice" as my voice mail provider.. It always shows "My Carrier". Google Voice works, but it won't let me "view and listen to messages from notification bar", it'll only let me view and listen to the calls through the app itself. I had no issues with my S3 or LG Optimus G Pro, but the HTC doesn't play friendly with Google Voice
I've tried the following steps:
Deleted and reinstalled the app (several times)
Manually changed the voicemail number
Went to the Google Voice web page on my PC and deactivated and reactivated it
Tried it on 2 different custom ROMs with the same results
Any other suggestions? I really would like to use all the features of Google Voice, but until I can I'll have to decide if I want to use it as a stand alone app (instead of in the notification pull down) or use the At&t Visual Voicemail.

Interesting, if you found a solution to this issue. I has the same issue with GV and wasn't able to find a solution anywhere. GV notifications on voicemail, missed calls do not appear in the notification bar. No voicemail access from call log. From the application itself everything works. But I really miss the integration, like it was working on my SGS 3 and Nexus 4

I never found a fix, I just use it as a stand-alone app. It notifies me I have a voice mail, but doesn't let me play messages from the notification area... I have to go to the app, then it takes 2 or 3 times of hitting play for it to work, I keep it because even with all it's faults, it's still one of the best out there. It worked flawlessly with my Nexus 4, S3, S4 and LG Optimus G Pro. Just has issues with the HTC One... Maybe someday there'll be a fix?

Nexus 5 Hangouts Google Voice Integration Works!

So after experimenting with My Nexus5. I have noticed something rather fascinating...... instead of explaining it, I figure its best to just give an example of what I am seeing. But first, i'll list the steps you'll need to do in order to replicate this.
1. open google voice app, goto settings, then 'sync and notifications', then click "receive text messages", and checkmark "via the messaging app"
ok, now to the examples: lets say your mobile number is 555-5555, and your gvoice number is 555-5557.
Examples
Ex #1) someone texts your gvoice 555-5557 number. when hangouts receives this text, it will appear as if it came from another number (for example 916-538-4889), but in the text preview snippet, you'll see the name of the person texting you (assuming this person is in your contacts list, otherwise it'll show their true phone number)
#1a) replying to this text, you'll be indeed texting some unknown intermediary google number, which presumably google owns, however this redirects your text to your recipient and it will send that person a text message, and the person who receives it will see that you texted them from your google voice number (555-5557)
Ex #2) someone texts your regular mobile number 555-5555, you'll receive it like normal....... and when you reply to this text message, your recipient will receive your text like as if it came from your regular mobile number 555-5555.
Ex #3) and then of course, the hangouts app also sends/receives hangout messages.
In other words........ I've manged to send/receive gvoice, regular text, and hangout messages all from the same app.
The implementation could be a little better. however, it at least exists !
P.S.
as a bonus, its nice to setup your voicemail so that you can view and play voicemails from the phone call log instead of going into google voice to play your voicemails or instead of calling a number to listen to them.
Won't let me change it to the messaging app. Don't get a lot of texts through gvoice regardless. but thanks for the heads up.

This is very pertinent to my interests, however I kind of knew this is how it would all happen. I just wish they would integrate the Voice app with Hangouts. The big problem with this scenario is starting an SMS conversation with someone. If I want to text someone that hasn't already sent me a text message, there is no way to show my Voice number instead of my devices' number. I need them to text me first because then that provides a Google routing number to reply to. Unless I'm missing something, then please let me know, I'd love to use Hangouts with my Voice number.
This is nothing amazing or special. GV would let you receive your messages through your sms app. Now that Hangouts is your sms app, your messages would go there. That is not integration at all.
Intgration would be removing the GV app and everything going through hangouts.
@Johmama, it appears this isn't full integration.... because apparently you would have to use the google voice app to send the initial text. However at the very least once they reply, you can forevermore use the hangouts app, and all your texts go through SMS (not using data), and they will see your texts from your gvoice number, even though you sent it through hangouts.

Awesome! Hadn't even thought of trying this. Made adjustments, and will see how it goes. Actually, might work really well as Sprint allows true GV integration
It won't let me change over. Says it has a problem

K it changed over but all it does is send texts through my t-mobile number
Spoke too soon
Not working here. I can select the "messaging app" to receive google voice texts, but it still is only sending to GV not hangouts, without any notifications in either.

Thanks for the heads up! I hadn't even thought of trying that! While I agree that it isn't ideal having to start the text convo from Voice, its a minor (one time) inconvenience for the people you text frequently!

This has been a feature of Google Voice since Google bought Grand Central and it isn't new. I can have texts forwarded to a dumb flip phone. What I hate is A) The random numbers, and B ) The "Anna Rills - Yeah I know what you mean"
The reason I like Google Voice is being able to archive texts, throwing messages in Spam, and automatic spam block thanks to Google's algorithms.

Group MMS (Stock Messaging App)

Hello all,
Today I picked up my Xperia Z1S, however I seem to not be able to find any setting to make a group MMS. I had an HTC One and Nexus 5 that did this with no problem, however the Xperia Z1s seems to have no option for this.
Any advice? I would have to go to the hangouts app (though it is nice) if I can stick with the stock one.
Thank You
Go download 8sms - works awesome for me. I'm running it in standalone mode (stock Messaging disabled).
I use hangouts without any issues.

8sms and stock messaging results in receiving 2 text messages every single time

Unfortunately after downloading, setting it into standalone mode (which assumes there is no other SMS app on the phone anymore, hence one should de-install SMS app from sony. But that doesn't work unless you root the phone.... but no rooting yet possible)
So how did you avoid getting 2 text messages every single time with the same content by having 8sms AND the stock messaging app on the sony experia Z1S ?

Follow their (and my) directions and disable the built in Messaging app.

It's 2014.. you gotta be kidding. I just got the phone and was absolutely loving it until I started getting separate group messages. Unbelievable. I was holding back on using Hangouts for SMS..

Guys...............this is the answer to your MMS problems. I have the Z3 and the same issue with the crappy stock text app. Textra is fantastic, looks COOLER than stock, and has all sorts of neat extras. (The add-on app that gives you cool iOS emojis that look better than the ones that come stock with Textra can be found here.)
My notes on Textra (please read):
1) ENABLE Stock Messenger app, making sure in "App info" screen (in Settings) that the "Notifications" box is unchecked. (Not sure if unchecking it matters, but I'd do it anyway to avoid double notification of incoming texts.) Also, under Stock Messenger's settings, make sure ALL boxes are unchecked as well. (You can try disabling stock text app if you want, but I don't, so not sure you really should either, but it might still be ok?)
2) In Textra (download this great text SMS/MMS messaging app if you haven't already from Google Play Store), make sure it's your default app, under Settings, "Use MMS for Group Chats" should be checked, MMS Settings: No Limit, and check the T-Mobile Wifi Calling Fix box too. (Post here or PM me if you'd like additional Textra settings suggestions.)
OPTIONAL: IF HAVING ISSUES RECEIVING TEXTS FROM iPHONE USERS WHO HAVE iMessage ENABLED ON THEIR IPHONE, THEN FOLLOW THIS: And lastly, there’s the “iMessage” issue ppl like myself are/were having (also those with LG G2 I’ve heard have this issue too) where when someone with an iPhone sends you an MMS pic text msg while their iMessage option is on, you don’t get the text…….. try this (a T-Mobile store rep told me this and it worked!): send YOURSELF an MMS photo text msg but include at least one other phone # as well too. If you’re using Textra or anything besides just the stock text app, then do this for EACH app. If that is the case, then do it via stock app first then Textra (easier this way). If you receive the pic successfully, then ask anyone you know with an iPhone to send you an MMS message (preferably having a 3rd phone # in on it too, but not sure if you need to) with iMessage ON. If you receive it, then it worked. If not, try this again.
Hope it helps!
P.S. If you're STILL having MMS issues, post here and I have something else I can have you try that I did which worked (it involves going into the Settings and changing a few things around, but it worked for my other MMS issue, which was NOT getting MMS messages from certain ppl!)

Contact Photo Not Showing Up in Hangouts SMS Preview

Anyone else having issues with contact photos in SMS preview since the latest update of Hangouts? Seems none of my contact photos are showing up in SMS preview for both Active Notifications or Notification Preview (swipe down from top). The issue resolves itself temporarily after a reboot, but starts happening again shortly after 1-2 SMS messages.

Yeah, I'm having the same issue on my Droid Maxx although I can't get the issue to resolve after reboot.
I think it may be not possible now.. Not Sure..
Pretty sure it's because they combined hangouts and sms in the same window in the hangouts app. Probably need an update from Google.

I have a same issue too. It's annoying. Either reboot your phone or manually resync your Google contacts. But then after some time the pictures disappear again so it's not a solution.

It seems if you start a hangout message it shows what ever pic the user has on Google+. On my Droid Maxx if I start an SMS it shows the contact pic fine until I switch to Hangouts.

Still having the issue after clearing cache and app data. I'm going to try and downgrade the Hangouts app and see if that helps.

Agreed. I love 8sms. Such a nice feature being able to reply to texts right from the notification bar. Great feature that I wish would be implemented more often (looking at you hangouts)

Yeah it turned out to only work after I initially did it but has reverted back. Very annoying.
I also have a Droid Maxx. This is one of the MOST maddening things to me. I have intentionally and meticulously spent hours making sure that all of my contacts show up with photos. I can't seem to solve this one. Prior to the last update that combined SMS/Hangouts all photos were correct. Now some of my contacts no longer even show the name, just a phone number. When I touch the stock photo it shows the person's photo and their name. No idea how to fix it. Not everyone has Google+ so this is not going to work. I'm giving this app until the next major update with GV being integrated and hoping it's fixed.
Has anyone else come up with a solution?

Glad it's not just me. I finally switched to Hangouts once the most recent updates enabled me to send photos over SMS via Hangouts and not require having a G+ account (I do not). I received a bunch of updates this afternoon and rebooted my phone (Droid Maxx) as I like to do sometimes when I install many updates at once. I now noticed this exact problem.... when I have a text waiting, and if I pull down the Notification Shade, the picture next to the contact is the default grey icon. Yet the contact photo properly shows up in my Contacts in the phone and within the SMS Hangout. Very odd, and annoying. I will try clearing the cache and data and see what happens. If this can't be fixed soon, I'll go back to the default Motorola SMS app.
I just had this issue. It appears that hangouts is using the google plus photo when you have a hangout, so there is an issue for only google hangouts photos.
I force closed the app and it fixed it. Try that out.
