Took a bit of fiddling around and looking through forums but I added an e-sim from Woolworths mobile on my watch even through my phone was with Circles.life.
My issue was that even though I managed to add the esim from a different carrier through the Galaxy Wearable app, in the watch settings > Mobile Plans the galaxy wearable app will have it turned off and tell you "Your phone and watch need to be on the same carrier" if you try to turn it on.
TL;DR. Once you've added the esim, you can't turn it on from the Galaxy Watch app on the phone, but you can turn it on from the watch's settings. Connections > Mobile Networks > Mobile Plans.

My situation and how to:
My phone plan is with Circles.life and I just signed up with Woolies mobile long expiry 65 day plan (as a test/gamble) with esim. I'm guessing you can do it with any provider that offers a QR code to add your esim to the device.
I've added the esim through the Galaxy Wearable app and now have the ability to call and use data from my watch. It has it's own cellular plan with it's own phone number, but it works just fine. If your phone and watch don't have a bluetooth connection but your phone has internet, it will push notifications to the watch over the internet and your watch will receive them via LTE. You can respond to those notifications, use SMS and make calls. You have the option to use your phone's profile in each case (if the phone has an internet connection).
Woolies send you the QR code (and the unique QR code ID in case the QR code doesn't work) via email within minutes of singing up and also a manual code.
So, to get it to work:
First, on the Galaxy Wearable phone app main screen > left upper corner, click the three slashes > about Galaxy Wearable > tap the title Galaxy Wearable 5 times > this opens a hidden settings menu > tap TEST E-SIM FEATURE > QR TEST MODE = ON
Go back to the watch's main settings screen and choose watch settings > mobile networks > add mobile plan then because you turned on the QR test mode, you should see an option to add an esim via QR code.
Scan the QR code and follow the steps to add your esim.
Side note here: I tried copy/pasting the code ID instead of using my camera, but I didn't get a button show up to add it, so I went back and used the camera. I only had my watch and phone, so I screen-shotted the QR code from my email on my phone, then sent it to my watch, then scanned the QR code shown on my watch with my phone.
4. Once your esim is added, you can't turn it on from the Galaxy Watch app on the phone, but you can turn it on from within the watch's settings.
5. On the watch, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Mobile Plans, press the toggle to turn on.
That did it for me.

I tried this in the uk, I am on SMARTY which runs through 3, got a Lyca esim which went onto the watch fine but had no signal.
Now I cannot remove it no matter what I do and it won't let me replace it from the phone (Error code: 150)
Done a full reset on the watch and deleted all data from the Galaxy Wear app but still persists and keeps asking me to resume or start over.
Any ideas?

Have you found a solution to this? Same issue, I can disable the plan from the watch's menu but not remove it. And even when disabled and in flight mode it still drains battery and also shows almost all battery usage as "network";
Tried various options under the test esim menu from the phone app as well without luck.
From browsing the web and similar issues for lyca on phones, the cause might be poor signal when trying to activate the esim. But on phones the broken plans can be easily removed.
I'm wondering if adding another plan will allow to delete the broken one, thinking of ordering one, otherwise out of ideas.

Is there a data flip switch?

Recently, even with "background data" disabled, my Nexus One randomly use EDGE data while it sleeps. This become the problem since when there is ongoing data transfer, I won't be able to receive calls. I didn't notice this until my friends told me that they couldn't reach me.
Is there an app or an option in Android/Nexus One that I can completely turn off mobile data access until needed? I tried APNDroid, but after I turn it back on, mobile data access won't be available until the phone is rebooted.
You can't use data and voice calls at the same time? That's strange. What carrier are you using?
I'm not actually sure if there is an easy way to turn data on and off completely, but you might be able to turn syncing off and then go through all of your applications and make sure they don't automatically update or stay logged in like g-chat. I think disabling syncing only has an effect on the stuff listed under Accounts & sync settings in the Settings menu, (Google and Facebook on the stock ROM).
I'm on T-Mo.
When you're on GSM network, unless BOTH carrier & handset supports some special feature (don't remember the name), concurrent voice/data is impossible. To date, I've only seen one Nokia phone supports the feature.

Going through every single app to make sure that it doesn't use data is a pita and not guarantee that no data will be used.
Since N1 WCDMA reception is crappy, I have to rely on GSM quite a bit. Since day 1, I had background data & auto sync disabled (only enabled when needed). --- For some reason, "background data" seems to apply to system/google-related app, but doesn't apply to 3rd-party app.
This sucks big time since it is phone first, computer second, so it kind of annoy me that background GSM data prevents me from receiving calls.

I found a way to completely disable/enable mobile data access on N1. It's a bit clumsy, but it works.
Go go Phone, dial "*#*#4636#*#*" to get into N1 Testing app.
Tap "Phone Information"
Tap menu -> more -> "Disable data connection"
Tap menu -> more -> "Disable data on boot" (just to make sure it's not enabled after you reboot the phone)
then... "GSM disconnects" should read "State: inactive ...... fail because No Error"
Some would suggest changing APN name manually or using widgets. But according to Testing app, you will still be connected to data network. Connection attempts will be made over mobile data network, but they won't go through. This doesn't guarantee 100% no data requirement. It just prevents you from hopping on the internet.
Seems like a lot of work to turn off data I agree. I'm just lucky I'm on a carrier that uses another carrier's net so it's roaming all the time. All I have to do is disable "data roaming" and data is off.
Toggle data is what i'm using - it's a free widget button to turn 3G (mms optional) on and off just like the Power widget. I've also seen another widget with a different name, but that was a black button and Toggle data is white.

try juice defender from the market. it can stop apn connections periodically or totally stop it

How to turn off data?

When I had my Aria, I could turn off the data connection but I cannot find the setting on the captivate.
Any ideas?

I would also love to know how to turn off the 3G data so I can be 100% positive that I'm not eating all of my monthly allotment when I think I'm on wifi
I use "APN on-off Widget" from the market. It's a simple 1x1 widget that allows you to enable and disable APN (data) connectivity with a single tap. It's color coded green/red for data on/off.

Download "network" app from the market place. Start the app, press menu, and press disable data. Works great for me. Would prefer an edge only option.
when by a wifi connection, can you just connect to the wifi connection to disable data?
When I first got my phone, came home, and connect to my wifi, it was showing the 3g icon next to the wifi icon for like a day and a half. Then for some reason, I had to power the phone completely off and back on again. So, now it just shows the wifi icon when I'm at home, and switches properly to 3g when I go out.

This is my first post ever to a forum. So, hopefully this comes out ok.
Just picked up my Captivate yesterday and was trying to figure this out also. Found a post by someone, can't remember from where, to go Settings, Wireless and network, Mobile networks, Access Point Names and then add a bogus APN. I named mine OFF. Once you have a bogus APN then select it instead of the ATT WAP. Well, tried this and it didn't work, still had icon at top for mobile data and was transferring data. That is until I got to messing around trying out some the settings and I happen to activate Flight mode, still had bogus APN selected. Then once I turned Flight mode back off the icon was gone and no more data transfer from mobile network. Then when I wanted to turn mobile data back on just went back and selected ATT WAP and the icon popped back in and connected to mobile network.
Extended Controls offers an APN toggle that works very well, and it's not a bad looking widget either.
Undocumented Debug/Diagnostic Menus In Your Android Phone - I found this at: TechSupportAlert
From your Android phone, dial *#*#4636#*#* and then wait a couple of seconds. The testing menu will appear. To exit back to your normal phone, just press your back/exit button. If you're going to explore the various options on the testing menu, take care.
As for the method to turn off data, select the first option on the testing menu (phone information), then press your menu key. You'll see a selection of buttons, one of which says "disable data connection". Press it, and you're all done. To re-enable your data connection, go to the same menu, where you'll find that the name of the button is now "enable data connection".
I tried it on my GT-P1000 and it worked perfectly.

If you are running stock FroYo there is a data connection in the power menu. Hold the power button, and press Data Network. It wasn't there in Eclair, but they added it in FroYo. If I remember right it will even remain disabled after a reboot. I can't test as my phones are no longer stock, but my wife once thought she broke her captivate because she accidentally toggled that.

Just leave your sim card out of the phone then there is no possible way to "sneak charges"...
wifi works with no sim. And you will get kick ass battery life without it.
I am in Venice now after a week in Paris and leaving the phone in airplane mode seems to be doing the trick. But let me just say, hotel wifi in Europe sucks! Its nothing like the states. You get a user name and a password and have to log in every single time. And only one user at a time. I need a wifi repeater or something to use my laptop, iPod, and phone as I want to.

Im trying to make my tab use wifi only becuase i don't have t-mobile service anymore. Is there anyway to get it to stop saying "searching" all the time? I have factory reset my tab but unlike other devices, there is no initial setup so i can choose WIFI only. Anyone have any ideas?

Go into Airplane mode, and then turn on the wifi.
Thats what I do. It uses less battery.
Also deactiveate "Data network mode"

Just flash overcome! Then follow simple instructions to turn off radio.. I its really simple.

"Turning the 3G-based Tab into a "Wi-Fi only" device (Disabling the GSM Radio!)
To disable the GSM Radio:
- Bring up your Phone/Dialer program
- Enter: *#*#4636#*#*
- Select Device Information
- Scroll to the bottom
- Tap the "Turn Off Radio"
This will disable all Cell/GSM/EDGE connections – should only be used for those who do not subscribe to a data/cell package. This will leave Bluetooth/Wi-Fi (I think) on so you can still connect Bluetooth devices etc., as opposed to switching to Airplane mode which turns everything off! "

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I wanted to offer an alternative solution for anybody still trying to find a persistent solution to creating a Wifi only Galaxy Tab. I use Llama to set up a start up event that turns Airplane mode on, waits 1 minute, and enables Wifi. It has worked well for me for the past several months. Here's the run down of my Llama configuration:
Event Name > Start Up
Conditions -
Phone reboot > After start up
Actions -
Toggle Airplane Mode > Airplane Mode On
Queue Another Event >
Event Name > WiFi On
Event delay > 1 minute
Actions -
Toggle WiFi > WiFi On
I hope this helps someone out.

6.0.1 Marshmallow Removes Data Toggle (slow/faiLs to recognize mobile network)

So, I knew updating to Marshmallow 6.0.1 would do this, and, I was purposely holding off until I could find an answer on how to restore the Data Toggle option.
But, AT&T and or Samsung are trying to be like M$, and low and behold, they ninja-updated my phone without my explicit agreement........
SO..... Now I'm stuck with this crap situation of not having a Data Toggle option.
Anyways, Now I noticed the following behavior:
When I have WIFI on, I then turn it off.
Doing this should automatically kick in my mobile provider data service.
Yet, it takes forever to kick in. Up to 10minutes!
There's like not way to force it to be enabled instantly once I disable WIFI.
I reset my network settings and still has the same issue.
It seems for some reason the phone just doesn't want to immediately initiate attempting to connect to my mobile network after I disable WIFI.
Anyone else notice this? and or can provide some pointers to get that data toggle back?
Just an additional note:
Anyways, there isn't any pattern I can find that determines why the phone won't try to initiate the mobile network immediately after WIFI is turned off.
This doesn't ALWAYS happen.
(I do know it never was an issue when I had the Data Toggle option prior to the Marshmallow update)
Well, At this point, I've tried this a few times and it works. If the Mobile Network doesn't kick in:
Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names (( Then choose your access point (Which is your APN to the mobile carrier) (Yes, it is already selected, but choose it anyways) ))

Factory reset, install Samsung good lock. Problems solved.
Sucks that the mobile data toggle switch doesnt work, this is the best alternative I've found. Bonus is that stupid warning about turning data off doesn't pop up anymore with the good lock

I am unable to find Good Lock on Galaxy store! :\
I pulled down the Good Lock apk from the apk mirror site, but, the data toggle STILL didn't work.
At least half the time, I have to to this in order to get the Mobile Data reconnected..:
Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names (( Then choose your access point (Which is your APN to the mobile carrier) (Yes, it is already selected, but choose it anyways) ))
This is extremely annoying. Can anyone else verify?

OK...... Figured this out.
Firstly, I had Multiple APN set up on the phone. I don't know why, but they ended up being there.
However, I only had selected the proper APN out of all of those for the Mobile Data.
The phone at this point didn't care if it was selected, and when switching off my WIFI, the Mobile Data wouldn't come on, and I had to do the following:
Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > Choose THE ALREADY CHOSE proper APN and exit out of settings
After this, the Mobile Data would come on...
SO WHAT I DID:
I removed all APNs that were defined in the 'Access Point Names' section, keeping only ONE APN (The proper one).
After this, the phone would switch on Mobile Data automatically.
SO.... In Conclusion, it looks like this build won't switch to the Mobile Data of a selected APN if multiple APNs are defined in the 'Access Point Names' section...

I've found thru the years that when upgrading to major OS changes, factory resetting helps prevent a plethora of issues. I've rarely ever had any issues with updates across all OS systems (Windows, MacOSX, BlackBerry, Android) because I factory reset. I wouldn't be able to tell you how many posts I've seen across all OSs where a factory reset fixed the problems. To prevent the hassle and headache, I just factory reset. Backing up my messages/phone logs is really the only thing I have to do; all my pictures are automatically backed up to Google Photos and my WD MyCloud, everything else syncs/connects/updates in the cloud (GDrive, GNotes, GMail, etc...) so as soon as I login I'm back to 95%. Downloaded SMS Backup and Restore (Play Store) and my messages/phone logs were restored in a couple min. Setup the APN for mobile data and I'm back to 100%. From there it's just setting up Nova, changing the factory theme, and reorganizing my icons into folders.

So, aside from the common touchscreen and proximity sensor issues, I'm getting this notification constantly that is driving me crazy. If I swipe it away it comes back many times per day. It can't be disabled. I've seen reports of it, but it's not widespread. I've not had this issue on any of my other phones, Samsung or otherwise. The only way to get rid of it is to turn off Wi-Fi Calling. I suppose it could possibly be an issue with the wireless in my home. I use an eero router system. But like I said, it works with all my other devices no problem. Anyone else get this?

download samsung members app from galaxy store, click get help (bottom), send report. once you submit a ticket, samsung will be able to tell you what is causing the issue.

I'm on T-Mobile. And almost every instance I could find of this issue on a Samsung device (via google search), the user was also using T-Mobile. And yes, it only happens when WIFI calling is enabled.

T-Mobile here, and also having the same issue. I just muted/Silenced all the notifications, but they still pop up in the bar.
I have seen it a couple of times at home (also on T-Mobile), but this past weekend, when using a car hotspot (AT&T), it kept showing up over and over again.
S20 FE Unlocked purchased from Samsung directly. Just transferred from Verizon to T-Mobile. At my home, cellular signal is so weak that the phone is basically unusable for calls. Wi-Fi calling is a necessity so I set the Wi-Fi Calling network preference to "Wi-Fi preferred". It doesn't take long for these notifications to show up when the phone changes back to "Cellular preferred" mode on its own. My work around is to turn on Airplane Mode, wait for it to engage, then re-enable Wi-Fi. This works to keep Wi-Fi calling active and stops the constant notifications. I just have to remember to de-select Airplane Mode when I leave the house. A big PITA.
When I was on Verizon the phone would remain in whatever network preference I selected without issue.
i have a workaround for this using tasker, the catch being that you need to have the android 11 (one ui 3.0) update. if you're still on android 10, the custom setting this watches for doesn't exist yet...it was only introduced in the android 11 update.
