Sadly there in no way of doing it as of now.
We will have to wait for ASUS to release a way for unlocking the bootloader

The link you posted is for Zenfone 5 , not Zenfone 4.
Official Unlock apk is now available at Asus Support Website .
Use it to unlock the bootloader for Zenfone 4.

Because the bootloader will be unlocked, you'll have to root your device & hide your unlocked bootloader from Google Pay, if you just flash Global & not root, it won't work

If you re-lock the bootloader after flashing Global on a Chinese device it will brick..
Okay I'm unlocked and rooted with Magisk and Magisk hide. But Google pay still says this.

I am on the eu rom and Google pay was working after updating the weekly It's not working anymore. It's hit or miss

You can only lock the bootloader with official MIUI that is the same region as was originally on the phone.

CHINA model device; u can only lock bootloader on China ( CN ) official rom.
GLOBAL model device; u can lock bootloader on India, Russian, Global, Europe ( IN,RU,MI,EU ) official rom.
Just use mi flash. Keep the lock bootloader tick on.

Yes, You're Right. 1st Unlock Your Device Bootloader Then Flash It Via MI Flash Tool.
Note That Your Device Warranty Will Void And You Lose The Data. So Please Backup Before You Do.

You can Unlock bootloader of the snapdragon version via Sampwned or afaneh92
