How To Guide Fix missing/not working VPN on A12 stock ROM - Motorola Edge 30 Ultra / Motorola Moto X30 Pro

Not all users could have it, but VPN "bug" (I use quotes since I'm not so sure it's a bug and not a wanted behaviour...) on stock ROM appears on post Feb23 A12 builds to date (don't know if root related or not).
It's composed by two parts (fact which lead me to be suspect...):
1. - VPN menu is missing in Network & Internet section
2. - every VPN app (not already installed before the Feb23 build) fail to work
To date there is NO official fix from Motorola, from others or... from me.
BUT I've found a couple of workaround for both issues which can be applied to have your preferred VPN app working fine (and that's the important thing! ).
I'm sorry but root is needed (well, not at all, but we'll see it in details after...) to fix both the issues...
Let's see in details...
1) VPN menĂ¹ exists & works fine, it's only hidden in Settings.
The workaround is to create a direct "shortcut" to the VPN menu using one of the shortcuts apps you can find on Play Store or, as in my case, using the "Create shortcut to Activity" function embedded in my launcher (Nova).
The name of VPN menu is: .Settings$vpnSettingsActivity
You'll get an Icon you can use to open VPN Settings!!
2) Now that you have the settings back you could think that your VPN apps will work. Wrong!
It's needed a second step...
I've studied a lot the issue and I've found that when your app should show a confirm dialog to create the needed VPN it doesn't show anything at all and no VPN is created...
Looking better I've found that this happens because the system directly deny the permission instead to let app to ask user!!
So... to correct this (wrong) behaviour the simplest fix is to use an app called App Ops Permission Manager (available on Play Store) which allow us to modify app permissions values.
We just have to go to our VPN app and modify the activate VPN value from ask to allow!!
If you use several VPN apps this has to be done for everyone...
Only problem is that App Ops requires Shizuku to run and Shizuku requires... root!
Well, not exactly to be honest... Shizuku can be actived without root too using the "Wireless debug USB" trick they well described in their app. I can confirm it works fine. Only issue is that it has to be enabled again at every boot, BUT I think modify done by App Ops should be "permanent" until app is not removed (or updated... not sure about this...), so Shizuko start could be needed a single time or so (in any way once VPN has been created in VPN settings the VPN app should be happy with it and shouldn't ask any more confirm!).
I hope you'll find all this clear & useful...

[Q] windows share via mapped drive

Hi,
Is there a way to create an SMB connection to a shared windows folder and create a permanent map to say a virtual folder on the sdcard that can be accessed from within other apps?
I'd like to be able to access a windows shared folder from within other apps, specifically office apps (quick office, office pro) rather than having to use ES File explorer or the like to access the files first.
I've used google docs via the office apps which is great, but need to find a way to access local network files on a per user (login) basis for apps.
Thanks
The only thing I have found that works OK is CIFsManager.
It is a pain to launch on VEGAn 5.1 beta (I can't launch it from the app drawer, I have to go into Market or Titanium Backup to start it), but it works to map drives over so my multi-terabyte store of video and music files on my home server are "local" files.
The app mounts the shares under /mnt/cifs/<share-name> by default, but you can mount them anywhere I think. If you are not using VEGAn 5.1 beta, make sure your ROM has cifs.ko capability (can probably check the release notes for whatever ROM you are using). If you are using the stock TnT, I am not sure if CIFsManager will work, but it might work with one of the enhancement packs for the stock image.
If you hve questions you can PM me or just post back. I'll check the thread again later today.
Weird....I use VEGAn 5.1 beta and have no problems launching CIFsManager from the app drawer or the shortcut on the homescreen.

Thanks Huntar,
Works a treat, although I do get the same issue you report, unable to launch from the app drawer, have to launch from the Market. Be interesting to get to the bottom of that (i'm running vegan 5.1 beta also)
Now I need the next step, which is to provide a simple interface to get users to 'login' to their shared folders then 'logout' once finished. It's a multi user per device scenario, thus need the ability to have dynamic mapping per user...
Any ideas or developers willing to write something? Can be paid development if anyone is interested....?
Nik
That is definitely a lot of heavy lifting if the device is used my multiple people with different access rights. My scenario is simple as everyone has full access to the media server.
I don't understand the launch issue, I have uninstalled and reinstalled, tried different things, but can't get it to launch from the app drawer or a shortcut.
Good luck, I'm sure that someone here (I'm NOT a programmer) can whip up something to script out the drive mappings. You might try a more general Android development thread elsewhere on XDA, you might have better chance of finding that programmer.
You might look at Mount Manager also... seems like it might work better, as it can mount shares based on location and task (with the paid license) triggers. I just found it in the Market while I was twiddling with the CIFsManager install. I might try it myself as CIFsManager is tedious even for me.
Permission Denied
I don't mind the launch from Market (as I have the same issue, tnt lite 3.1.4, with clemsyn #77 kernel). I put in the address and share name, which I can log into my router and pull all that info as the hard drive is connected to my router, and when I try to mount I get Permission Denied?? Thoughts?

Any help on getting this working? I too have the marketplace launch issue (not a big deal) but eveytime I try to mount I get a no such file or directory error. I am used to CIFS in Windows so what am I missing?
Thanks!

Bought it and like it so far - works better then CIFsManager but then you get what you pay for - you hope.
I installed two free apps - "es file explorer" and "androexplorer", interesting enough I had to leave user name and password blank, but then I was able to get my network drives!!! Works great!
I am trying to get mountmanager to work, but it is FC every time and seems like it will not load the module. CIFSmanger works, but I can't get mount manager to do anything but crash
TNT 4.2.3- Clemsyn Kernel
Not sure what happened, but it's running now. Some crashes but it would not even run before.

[Q] xposed, VPN, ICS & Auto VPN Dialog Confirm

I read the module FAQ and the code page and tried out module & xposed code and I was not able to get around my problem. I'm not sure that it was supposed to get around my problem though, but I was hoping to get your take on things. I can't find much data, though I can find a few people asking the same questions as I.
I installed an android 4.3 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121063) on my phone and tried to connect to an OpenVPN based VPN provider. I got an error and contacted their support. Part of that process was to try another app, so we tried the OpenVPN COnnect app, the official OpenVPN app. I got a different error with that app.
One says that "your android firmware does not support the VPNService API("
OpenVPN Connect says "Sorry, due to a known issue in this version of android, it is not possible to gain permission to open a VPN tunnel"
There seems to be a few problems popping up with OpenVPN based VPNs in various Android 4.x OSs, but none complaine about 4.3 specifically. Usually they complain about 4.4 or back when 4.0 and 4.1 were new. I found this article talking about it on OpenVPN, and they're just pointing the finger, but I can't find the actual bug referenced:
https://forums.openvpn.net/topic13772.html
I came across your code on this page:
https://code.google.com/p/ics-openvpn/wiki/FAQ
And decided to try loading xposed and your module after emailing OpenVPN Connect and receiving a response right away. The guy who replied seemed to think the error is related to the fact that the confirmation acknowledgement dialog is not able to be summoned. I figured maybe the ROM wasn't bypassing it properly or missing some part of it, so I tried your way of bypassing it.
After loading xposed and your module, and selecting the 2 VPN apps, I still get the same results.
What are your thoughts? Should I give up and find a new ROM?
What are you talking about? If you're asking about a specific module (looks to me that way,) you should do that in the appropriate thread.
After some more research and experimentation yesterday, it's looking more like those OpenVPN clients that "support" the VPNServiceAPI actually *require* it, and that annoying/nasty little dialog that google enabled to "protect" the user just serves to piss off advanced users like me. This is my hypothesis at this point, though I have not confirmed this. I suspect this because I just tested on Jelly Bomb, a 4.1 based ROM and see the same results so far.
As far as what I was talking about in my OP, I copy/pasted an email to the author of the xposed module here and tried to reformat it to fit the message board, and apparently I missed a few pronouns. By far not the most egregious use of the English language I've seen on these boards, so what's with the attitude? I don't see specific sub forums for each and every module, so I don't get what you're implying. I only saw the one xposed board, so where else was I supposed to post?
No attitude, I honestly didn't understand how your issue was related to the Xposed framework. I just searched the repo for "VPN" and now see what you're talking about.
The Auto VPN Dialog Confirm doesn't have a thread here on XDA. Reading your post again, you're trying to use Xposed to fix a bug with the app if I'm not mistaken? I'd first try checking the logcat and forwarding that to the author of the VPN app if you haven't already.
I can't answer the rest of your questions since that's up to the module's author. That being said, it looks like a module specific question/request, not a framework query.
My understanding of the issue described here is different, probably because I'm trying to solve the same problem On the other hand, I'm not on ICS anymore, but am using Sammy 4.1.2 stock with DorimanX Kernel 8.43 at the moment.
OpenVPN should be usable for establishing a connection on boot. Out of the box, this creates a dialog to trust this application. Even though I trust it and confirm, there is no way of saving that preference permanently. It seems to be kept for a while (disconnect / reconnect doesn't trigger it again at least ) Therefore, it always reappears each time I boot.
The only possible solution I could find was the Xposed Module "Auto VPN Dialog Confirm" - the same module mentioned by the OP.
I used it together with the OpenVPN Client by colucci.web.it (paid version in my case, because I also wanted TAP support and auto connect functionality as well as the option of controlling it via Tasker).
After installing "Auto VPN Dialog Confirm" it recognized the installed OpenVPN client and offered to allow VPN API connections from it without confirmation. The VPN client also has an option to automatically create connections when Wifi is up and allows to be triggered either when seeing a specific SSID or when connecting to a network which does not have a specific SSID. The latter one is the typical condition for untrusted networks.
Therefore, it achieves what I wanted - being able to route my traffic via OpenVPN in case I'm not connected to my home WiFi
Regarding the issue encountered on ICS - maybe getting in touch with the Developer of the Xposed module might be the best option, unless someone else has already found a solution for it. It could also be good to exactly specify the OpenVPN client used as clearing the Xposed logfile and having "AutoVPN Dialog confirm" run as the only Xposed app (and fail). Afterwards, the log hopefully contains useful feedback for the developer to investigate further (Support URL listed for the module)

Alternative to xprivacy if I go to 5.0 LP ROM

Hi,
As Xposed apparently won't be ported soon to LP if ever, I was wondering if I update to LP (Galaxy S4 got GE LP), what options I have to protect my privacy and manage those permissions? I am too much spoiled by Xprivacy I doubt if there is anything as good as Xprivacy but need at least something that can do a minimum job to block and deny some permissions.
Thanks for all your suggestions
P.S I was also thinking of making a post to list all alternatives to different xposed module, what do you guy say ? I can keep the OP uptodate if you share your alternative Mods/Apps to xposed modules
Alternative solution I am personally using right know which serve me quite well till we have some real privacy mod/tool :
You will need 2 apps :
- AFWall+ (open source firewall) : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.ukanth.ufirewall
- App Ops : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.findsdk.apppermission
Ideally to prevent leaks, install them before installing or restoring any data after flashing your ROM
1- In AFWall+
- Enable the Firewall by pressing 3 dot menu and Enable firewall,
- Then for apps which you want to grant access Check the Icons First is for LAN Network acces, 2nd is for Wifi Internet, 3rd is your Mobile Data (some system apps like Media server, download etc.. must have internet access other wise Youtube, or downloading in browsers wont work, read the FAQ question for more info.)
- Once all app you want to grant access are checked, click on 3 dot menu and click Apply. (each time you change permission don't forget to apply).
2- App Ops : This one is very easy all Apps installed are organized by Type of permissions you go in and then uncheck the permission to to Block it, once ou are in App you will see all blockable Permissions that this app is asking not only of that category and that is handy
Please Note that App Ops don't list and block each and every permissions, but most essentials are there. Combined with AFWall you are good to go to protect your privacy till some good Mod or Xposed for LP come out.
Now instead of being fully naked without Xprivacy on LP, now we are at least in Bikini
App ops? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=droidmate.appopsinstaller
Nothing as good as Xprivacy. I'm still on KK and I'll stay on this version for a while I guess.

App ops deny permission per app basis, but sometimes denying permission break the app, xprivacy instead send fake data to the app, so you can still use the app without giving your real info
Xposed and Xprivacy are just the single best privacy guards
I know but how long can we stay on KK at one point we need to update or when we buy future devices there won't be any choices. So we need to find alternatives to all those xposed modules

From what I can see, devs are more interested in custom roms/kernels rather than in security/privacy purposes.
Marcel (M66B) is almost ready for Lollipop. We 'just' need Xposed. He is also working on another project which could have the same goal (no available information).
I really hope that rovo89 have enough motivation and will be successful in developing Xposed for Lollipop.
I don't want to loose control because of Google updates. Future devices is another subject and I think there is still a long way to go before not being able to use a KK device.
i really think that a moderator should open a thread for indexing all of the 'Alternative to xposed mod *name* for LP 5.0.*'
just until we will have xposed or something else for android L...
There is "privacy guard" by cyanogenmod in cm12, I think it sends fake data too instead of just block the permission. But you have to install custom rom for this.

This does not offer the same level of protection. I would not call Privacy Guard an alternative of Xprivacy.
There is no real alternative for Xprivacy, but at least it is something
I won't stay on a old version of Android only because one developer is going like "i'm god, don't ask me questions" ... we will never see xposed for LP, get used to it and move on.
I have moved to LP as I couldn't just leave my self open to all privacy leak, I came up with a solution while waiting for Xposed or any other other Mod to come out.

Well, the saying goes "Do Not Feed The Trolls", yet here I am, feeding one: He does not play "god". He has a valid point by saying that it is his hobby, and should stay his hobby. If he feels like it, he could leave XDA and the whole Android-platform completely, and I would be fine with this decision and others should be, too! It is and has to be his choice, and if he does not find the time, muse, etc., then it is how it is.
You clearly have no idea how coding works, how Lollipop works, how the xposed framework works, else you would shut up and be patient.
If you are so much better than him, do it yourself. Everything you need is just a few clicks and downloads away. All his work is on github, and Anrdoid itself is open source. Go understand how xposed works, go understand how Dalvik works/worked, go understand how ART works, and then write it yourself.
Unless you really are better, and can do this, just wait silently. Don't be yet another huso cancerous forum member. There are enough of them as it is. Don't be ungrateful. Especially now!
For f* sake, I shouldn't even have to "defend" his choices.

Can you fake your IMEI with one of those?
Here's the link to LBE Privacy Guard (english):

And yes, you can block IMEI, I'm not sure if you can fake it.

I'm also awaiting an updated version of Xposed and Xprivacy for my incoming M9, but it seems a 64bit version is a long way off.
What do you guys know about this? Looks to be developed by faculty and students at Carnegie Mellon University.

Can I Safely Disable IPSec Service?

I'm still seeing Android System using the lion's share of my battery life and I've started looking at the services running within it. The IPSec service is always near the top of the Android System pile and I was wondering if it's safe to disable it.
Some light Googling is turning up the service is related to VPN networking but there's not much more available (at least at an entry level of understanding). This link provides a decent understanding. I don't use remote access or corporate VPNs. My only real question is if I disable it using the App manager, are there routine functions that might be disabled? Should I be weary about Samsung Pay?
Thanks!
Finaly have you find a solution ? i'm reseaching on google and i can't find how disable ipsec on android , if you have know how do this , please let me know
Root your phone to enable super user abilities, and search for ipsec in rom manager, then disable it.
Realizing Im going back in time.. Or if you have a device like the Samsung S6 Active, an AT&T branded, close to perfect device which I have yet to find a way to Unlock the bootloader and root ..? Try AdHell-2. The link(s) are here at XDA. You must... 1.) Create a Samsung Account, 2.) Apply for a Developers Account SEAP, 3.) Request a License Key, 4.) Toggle On Unknown Sources in Settings/Lockscreen & Security/Unknown Sources, 5.) Install the AdHell-2 .apk, 6.) Then Activate the App by Copying your License Key. * This is a great App which not only serves as a highly-efficient Ad Block, but also allows for the Disabling of System and User Apps. Anyone reading this know of a way to root the S6 Active?

Tasker or another automate app working?

Hi,
I tried to find root cause, but unfortunately without success. Is there anybody, who using Tasker or another application for automatization of your phone without any issues?
My issue is, Tasker is still "delayed" - but same rules I used before on LG G3 (Android 6.0) - but now on P9 (DualSIM) didn't work.
I have task for Calendar Entry, where if I have appointment in my work calendar, during this time Sound mode is deactivated (only Vibrate).
Some suggestion? I tried white lists, etc. or another app with same bad behavior.
Thank you!
Well, I tried to deactivate power management app from Huawei over ADB and looks good now finally! Its workaround, but tasker now working very well as expected.
adb shell pm hide com.huawei.powergenie
Did you have "Run in Foreground" selected in Tasker's preferences?
My Tasker works fine with that selected, although I also have trusted the app in permissions manager, allowed it to auto launch & activated it as a device administrator in advanced settings/security.
Yeah, I tried every tip over Tasker or phone (EMUI settings) and only deactivate power management helps me.
I had the same problem with IFTTT. It worked perfectly with my LG G3, but was hopeless on the P9. No amount of white-listing or settings would work.
I even had the app in memory, with Google maps running, on GPS, screen on, and it still wouldn't trigger a location based profile.
I've had to revert to manually arming and dis-arming my home security system. Annoying.
I translate from spanish so I'm sorry if your phone shows menus with other name.
You must go to adjust > advanced adjusts > memory and store and at bottom of page "space clean". On new screen push on upper-right wheel, and now on last option "white list of memory clean". Finally look for your app and activate it.
If you don't include app here, clean system will close it on background and timers won't work. It solved my problems.

Why would you need Tasker for that simple.
Settings, type in the Search Autostart and add your app to the list of apps to be started on every reboot.
You may also need to disable Battery Optimization for your app (to make sure it would still work in background when the phone sleeps with dark screen)
That should generally work for all Androids. I don't have Huawei P9 now for years, I remember that EMUI might have had specific Settings organization but there was also Autostart (or Auto start)...

I had P9 for three years (if you don't believe, you can find tons of my posts here back from 2017-2018)
Now, you have that phone, not me (I got rid of my last Huawei almost three years ago) - I cannot show you and I cannot look into the EMUI settings because I don't have the EMUI phone anymore
But I KNOW that there was a way in EMUI how to control which apps will be automatically started on boot - I know because I played with all that back in those years, II did need for many apps like AdAway, Find My Device and similar that required to be auto-started to operate correctly
Take your time and google and you'll find. Sorry, I tried to help you but I will no more waste my time on that. Huaweis are past time for me
And take your time, use your imagination, If not Autostart, google for EMUI startup manager or something similar to find the answer for your question on the Net
