Cing8125 users: 217 ROM w/CF2,ringers,themes and A2DP on ftp - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

I suspect this is as close to the perfect ROM as I can make for you folks, until I find something else universally useful to add..
This ROM has the following characteristics:
-Based on QTek 2.17.7.102
-OS 5.1.195 Build 1487.2.0.0
-Radio 02.07.10
-Protocol 412.1.03
-Includes assorted ringers, themes, OmapClock, and yes, A2DP
- .NET Compact Framework is integrated. It is build 2.0.5238.0
- .NET Compact Framework 1 has been left in. Build 1.0.4292.2
-Did I mention it has A2DP integrated?
-It is not coded to a specific carrier, so theoretically you shouldn't have to CID unlock. HOWEVER, I ask, no, I demand that you CID unlock before installing. Only then will you be allowed to grovel in the forum for help if you run into problems achieving a successful flash.
-Each morning at 7am it will gently vibrate, go start the coffee maker, fetch the newspaper, feed the dogs, and start your bath. Should you leave it at home it's likely to cuddle with your wife...it has no loyalties.
It can be found here until it gets moved:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU2_WWE_CF2_A2DP.exe
If anyone asks me to make this ROM using 2.08 I'll send my legions of monkeys to harass and belittle you in public.

Thanks man, this is kick ass.

MY HERO!
Dude, you ROCK!!! You have made my decision to get this phone more and more worth it. Thanks again!

A2DP Not Working
So, I CID Unlocked and installed this new ROM successfully. Then I went to the connections screen and enabled bluetooth. Opened up Bluetooth Settings and created a new partnership with my Moto HT820. Went through all the normal steps and it found Hands Free and Wireless Stereo services on my headphones device. I saved the settings.
In 2.08/2.87, at this point I would press the right ear button, which would activate Wireless Stereo mode and I would see a music icon in the top bar. It didn't happen on this new ROM. Another method is to go back to the Bluetooth settings and click&hold on the device and you see a list of services (Hands Free and Wireless Stereo) and then choose Wireless Stereo. On this new ROM, only Hands Free is listed. If I choose to edit the device, it lists that Wireless Stereo is supported on the headphones, but it is not available as a mode on the phone.
I will be going back to 2.08/2.87 for now. Let me know If you happen to figure out what's might be going on.
Thanks!

Hey Summiter .... canyou? .... are you going to? .... I need? .... would you? .... nevermind can't think of anything

A2DP not working with HT820
I've successfully flashed this ROM and tried to pair Motorola HT820 headset but it was not recognized as Wireless Stereo. It was recognized like Hands-free only.
Anyone knows how to make it work? Thanks

Does this ROM still have the issue where the device won't vibrate from standby?
Also... for those of us just tuning in...
What's the benefit of having additional components (like CF) loaded through the extended ROM? When they're installed, will they live in ROM instead of taking up precious storage space? Or is it just the convenience of having everything install from one place?
Maybe Voice Commander in the next release...?

the non-vibrate thing is part of the rom, as MS made it that way. and voice command isn't free, so i doubt he'd include it in the rom.

CF goes to main memory regardless of the settings you choose at installation (you can choose Storage Card >>> it installs w/o error message to main memory).
You can see the appropriate files in the \windows directory. They all start with GACxxxx.
Cheers

Good Stuff...
One question though. Does this still have the battery indicator moved to the top. I just flashed yesterday without issue but I'm thinking the battery indicator can be optioned. Obviously this is a miniscule issue compared to the other great work you've done. Thanx guy.
J

the battery icon at the top is part of the AKU2.

I was talking about Voice Commander - not MSVC

Oi Vey!
I'm all settled in on v2.87. everything works, wifi, a2dp, btaudio e.g.
What extras is this going to buy me??
Maybe I'll hold off for a little longer.
Still, thumbs up to Summiter.

as much as a pain in the ass it is, the 2.17 rom with A2DP is MUCH more stable than the test rom.

Hi Summiter,
I'm set to receive my 8125 this week. I've been doing as much reading and bookmarking as I can until I have the phone in my hands, but I haven't seen this question posted yet.
When a user loads your ROM, does the phone start at the beginning of the customization process (setting time zones, preferences, etc) or do your customizations piggyback as the defaults? What's making me ask is I see you've mapped your camera button to the omap 252 overclock setting and I'm curious what to expect when I load this ROM. Thanks!

Your phone looses all setting and resets as if you just took it out of the box. Its a pain to do over but most of us have become pretty proficient at it with our mulitude of ROM reloads ;-)

Can anyone confirm that they have A2DP working on this ROM?
For folks that have reported not being able to get A2DP working - can you confirm whether the file "bta2dp.dll" exists in your windows directory? It's a hidden file so you'll need to set your file manager to view all files.
Thanks.

Is there an upgrade in one of these ROM versions for the Bluetooth? Im having issues with my 8125 and my BMW hands free car kit. My contact list doesnt show up on my display in the car. I had a SE 710a and it worked perfectly. With my 8125 I cant get the contact list on the hands free.

If you've CID unlocked previously, and you have 2.17 now, can you just use this ROM directly? Or is it necessary to downgrade and then CID unlock again? Sorry for the noob question.

Summiter...
There has been talk and concern about the 8125 erasing data on the sd card if you set your email options to save attachments to it. I was wondering if you knew anything about this and/or the new ROM version might fix the issue.

A stable configuration

Hello everyone,
I would like to start this new thread with a different purpose than trying to explorer the latest and gratest of releases of ROMs, extensions, software and patches.
I have tested many of the releases posted here and I have yet to find one that offer a rock solid unit that can be depended on in all situations.
What I would like is to put together a package based on the best of all available that offer the highest reliability available for our device.
It's very annoying to have to reset the device, somtimes more than one time in one day because you loose GPRS connectivety or because you turn on the WiFi card at an unlucky moment and lock up the device.
It's very annoying that you press the answer button repeatedly but have trouble picking up the rining phone.
It's very annoying that you try to make a call, but the phone keeps hanging up without making the call until you reset the phone subsystem.
It's very annoying that you pick up the device to make a call only to find that for some reason the phone has been locked up for hours with the screen on and now you are out of power and far away from your charger.
It's very annoying that your screen gets garbled and you find that you are unable to get the display back to normal without resetting the device.
It's very annoying that bluetooth more or less have turned out to be a marketing item only, since we have yet to se an implementation on the device that works (and maybe we never will)
If you agree with me or/and have experienced some or probably all of the above and have some input you would like to share on what is the best release, or have software and patched that have made a difference to you, then please contribute and maybe we could one day have a reliable operating system and software pack on our PDA that we can actually trust to handle the important task of keeping us connected to the rest of the information based world 24/7.
I hope many people will participate in this thread and that we can get to a release of software that we can all feel happy about, since it seems that none of the providers have been able to accomplish this task.
Michael
Fully agreed with you. And here is my BA config:
- MDA III with 1 Gb SD (Trandcent 80x)
- ROM 1.40 & radio 1.12
- Big storage - No Extended ROM
- Excluded nearly all software from WWE 1.40 ExtROM. Install only patched
Most apps are installed to storage
- Pocket Informant 2005 (In main memory)
- Pocket breeze 5 (In main memory)
- Pocket Player 2.6
- Sound Explorer 2005
- Pocket Navigator 2.74
- Sprite backup 3.1.4
- Mobile Pocket reader 5.0
- Total Commander 2.0
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.0 for PPC
- Tools: Cab Installer, vxUtils, Tascal Reg. Editor TRE 0.9, calculator, stop time ...
Full backup with Sprite backup 3.1.4, excutable archive file so that I can restore to a fully loaded system righ after hard reset. The backup is also in storage.
With this config the phone is very stable. On average 1 soft reset/week, mostly due to phone problem (I work in a building with very week GSM signal).
here here!
while ive not bothered to update for exactly one year now, i truely couldn't be bothered with the rom backup, new rom, install settings, settings restore, all to find out that... oh others are still having a problem with phones hanging/not connecting, because you used bluetooth and didn't reset before using gprs. of course, silly me!
right now i'm looking for a stable basic setup, with Tomtom 5 (bt gps mouse) and gprs useage... and possibly, using them together!
it does seem experimenting is only way to do so...
What a good idea - however, after one year of updating ROMs I do not think that there is a stable system for this device after all ...
I cannot use my Qtek for business because
- I am not sure whether I will miss a call because my Qtek somehow decides not to ring
- I am never sure whether I can finish a call decently (or the devices shuts down on its own)
And I am tired of resetting the device before and after
- using WLAN
- using BT
Currently, I am on
ROM 1.42.01 GER
Radio 1.12.00
ExtROM 1.42.116 GER
which still has all the flaws mentioned above.
This is the 4th different ROM I have installed (WWE, GER). I mainly use it for storing contact info and meetings.
A
I still wan't to try.
I'm using a configuration of 1.40 and 1.12. This is OK, but the phone app is still quite unstable and the device itself will hang. Most trouble seems to be when you press a key at an unlucky split second when the unit is trying to do something else, this often leads to lockups.
Does anyone have any input regarding the version numbers to use? Especially is 1.42 or 1.31 better than 1.40? and is 1.12 better than 1.13 or vice versa?
What about patches and registry hacks, what do you consider being a vital patch or hack to improva stability dramatically ... ? If any.
I hope to get some input from you guys that install every single thing and have gained allot of input on what works and what doesn't?
Michael
This combination seems to be vert stable for Scandinavians
I have had very good results so far with this combination:
BA_DT_WWE_NorwayRetail_14000_149_11200_Ship.exe
Then install:
86794-9090_radio_upgrade_1.15.00.zip
This is so far the bes experience I have had while I had the device.
Michael
Update
After a while, I have observed that I'm still having the GPRS connect problem and I have therefore installed the:
IA_CallerID_1.20_WWE.CAB
I will update my experience in a while. So far I like this combination, except that GPRS cinnection problem. I haven't had many other problems. There has been a little "flutter" around Blue Tooth and TomTom, If you try to start TomTom with BT disabled, you sometimes seem to grid lock until you re-boot.
Extended ROMs
Is it my imagination? The higher the extended ROM version the less stabillity? It seems to me that way. The more stuff they add, the less overall stability you get. Does anyone have a different experience?

i find that when upgrading to the new WM5 roms, that all my files, programs and settings, even contacts and messages are all still as i left them, i just put the device into bootloader and plonk into the cradle, then start upgrade 2 mins later its done, all new features and nothing that is usually backed up is changed.
The best stabillity so far
I'm still running with the configuration outlined in my previous posts. And it's pretty stable, the only problems I seem to be affected by are:
After 1 to 7 days the GPRS connection fails and I have to reset the device to get it working.
Rarely some applications and the phone gets in a bind somehow, probably by starting at the same time in an incompatible way and lock up the phone. I have to reboot the device to get out of that.
The phone part itself seems to be stable and I have no missing sound or low volume issues.
I had good bluetooth functionality, but since paring my device with my GPS I can't get the device to connect correctly to my headset. I will pair up and then when it tries to connect it fails. I'm unsure what that's about. I don't use the bluetooth headset much, so I haven't been bothered much by this, but I would ofcourse prefer if everything was working as you would expect it to!
I would upgrade my base ROM to 1.42, but my testing and experiences with that have been that it's more unstable than 1.40.
I'm even more convinced now that I'm right about the extended ROM thing, the higher the version of extended ROM to more problems (potential problems).
Any input on stability are very welcome, I would love to find a near perfect configuration where most things work 100% and all the time.

Suggestion about WM5 versions (Commandant Ivan and TuMa)

I've been testing for three weeks TuMa v1.3 and Ivan's WM5 pda2K_2k5.rar and chosing myself the cabs I wanted to add. I have also tested Ivan's latest versions but I couldn't make the Extended_ROM work properly, I didn't like the splash screen and some minor customization issues so, at the end, I decided to go back to the old WM2k3... shame!
I was happier with Ivan's first version because it's faster and clean.
Though, there's a big problem: Extended ROM is not supported in this version. I would like to ask Commant Ivan if it will be possible to produce a "clean" ROM as v4 R0 JUST with the possibility of having a directory "\Extended_ROM" in the SD Card where we can add the Extended ROM cabs, same as TuMA ver 1.3.
I believe the most important thing is have a clean ROM and to move the Extended ROM to the SD Card. In this way, we can have more room for WM5 in our BA, updates and patches are easier to install but we can also chose the cabs we want to use and personalize our Extended ROMs with OEM programs (as TomTom, utilities, etc)
What do you think, Commandant Ivan and TuMa?
Thank you anyway Ivan and TuMa for your great job with WM5!
I didn't think Ivan's ROM had anything on it on a default install? Just the stuff that comes with WM5 cause Microsoft put it there, and a few driver updates (like the BT Stack.) Maybe when you installed it you setup the autorun to install all the cab packages that come with it. I just ignored these and added them manualy later on.
I've found that although Ivan's ROM is alot cleaner and faster on a fresh install, once I've installed all my software it slows down again even with a overclock, where as with TuMa a fresh install is alittle laggy, but it already has loads of stuff hardcoded into the ROM so with the same overclock it becomes really responsive.
Bearing in mind I've only been testing Ivan's for a couple of days though!
At the moment I'm with Ivan's ROM simply because of a few bug fixes it has over TuMa 1.3. I did at one point go back to WM2003se but after using WM5 for awhile, it just isnt the same.
@Artz
What exactly is the problem with your extended rom ? (Size, errors that occur, etc.)
@ Lt.Cmdr.Ivan
Ivan, I've testing your latest release v4 R1 for the last few hours. I must say I don't have further problems with the Extended ROM issues as I had with previous releases.
Though, I still think that moving the Extended ROM folder (with Autorun support) to a folder in the Storage Card (ie \Storage Card\Extended_ROM) will be a good idea, because:
1.- we can use the full size of the device extended ROM for WM5 programs,
2.- we can use "DOC_Tool_1.0.exe" and "DOC_Restore_1.0.exe" to upgrade and downgrade easily. As you know, these tools work perfect with WM2k3SE and WM5 and they will use all the Extended ROM memory for programs. You don't even need to make visible the extended ROM... so much easier to use than DOC_Repart.
3.- we can cook your own extended ROMs and put in that folder all our favorites cabs so they will be installed automatically after a hard reset (every time I test a new version I have to reinstall manually TomTom and other utilities, which it's really silly when I have 1Gb SD Card)
Something I would like to see also in a next version is to have your "Cert_SPCS_disable.CAB" already included in ROM... In this way, we can use TPDISABLE and TPENABLE.EXE in our config.txt
I realized when you change the value in "Settings", then "Error Reporting" and check "Disable Error Reporting", WM5 won't check digital signatures. I didn't have time to check which value of the Registry is modified doing that. I'm pretty sure it's possible to do this without using XML language (as in the cab "Cert_SPCS_disable.CAB"
Just one thing more... but that's just personal taste: I would like not to have the modified splash screen. I would prefer you remove the "welcomehead.96.png" file in order to start my BA with the default WM5 splash screen. I do understand you are proud of your work and you like to see your name... ;-)
All these remarks are just constructive. I appreciate a great deal your work to install WM5 in our all BAs, mate. Thanks a lot.
My two dream things for the BA are...
1. GSM Power Hack. When in a one bar or less signal area, you can enable this switch to overpower power your phone (illegal of course) so that it is more likely to be in range. You could proberly extend this to Wireless and Bluetooth if you wanted. Course it would drain your battery like a short circuit. Isn't they some way the power gets bosted for emergancy 911/999 calls already?
2. Sim Card IMEI Memory Prog. Sure someone asked for this before in a previous topic. A nifty program that will download all the details from your sim card and then create a "Virtual SIM" on your phone, allowing you to have two numbers (or maybe even more?) on your phone without any hardware mods. Of course, this would proberly need a serious firmware hack to do, I mean how do you choice with number to call or send a message from?
Makes you wonder though, could you have a Virtual SIM in one phone and a Hard SIM of the same IMEI, and get two mobiles to ring at once?
Of course, these are the *Ultimate* doubt it will never happen dreams.

8125 users: custom AKU 2.2 ROM now available

As far as I know, this is the only public way to get AKU 2.2 on a Wizard. I'm sure the T-MO and other folks will get at tearing this apart so they can have what we now have. =)
Here's the scoop:
OS: 5.1.195 build 14928.2.2.0
Radio: 02.13.11
Bootloader: 2.21
Media Player: 10 build 14928
Free Storage: 43.48M
Free Program: 24.57M
The ROM version is reported as 2.17.11.1 - this is the version on devices distributed by Cingular and Microsoft to partners, testers, execs, etc.
I've kept the customizations as they were created by Cingular for this build, with the following short list of additions:
A2DP
Multi-select contacts
Wireless Today screen plugin
Transparent carrier logo (used when displaying phone pad)
Disable prompting for unsigned cab file installs
Aku 2.2 allows for placing the clock on the title bar in place of the battery meter. The requisite registry entry is in place and this is the default behavior.
Over the coming days I'll create some customized versions of this ROM similar to others I've created, and based on feedback from my request for suggestions.
If you have never successfully CID unlocked, please do so since the SPL is sourced from another carrier's ROM.
Start you dowloadin' now:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Cingular/Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU22_Basic.exe
Big thanks again to Mr. or Mrs. <anonymous> for getting the AKU 2.2 bits to me.
EDIT:
Although the clock is now the default in the title bar, if you want it to display while other programs are open, you'll need to go to Start->Settings->System->Clock & Alarms->More and check "Display the clock on the title bar in all programs"
Just thought I'd clarify...
Also, despite what has been said, AKU 2.2 does not include Compact Framework 2. I'll add it later.
Gawd, I've been waiting for this forever. Thanks Summiter. Downloading now.

It's downloaded and sitting on my harddrive. Can someone post whats different (apart from clock in title bar) between this ROM and the 2.17 AKU2 ROM that's been out..
Don't feel like flashing it and re-customizing if there's nothing major. My Cingular 8125 running 2.17 is working great - it never reboots, crashes and runs fast. Its been running for over 3 weeks straight now without a reboot and doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon.

Browsing through the files, there's quite a few that are changed in some way from AKU 2.0. What those changes are, I don't know. Finding details on AKU updates has proven quite a challenge.
At this point I'd say that unless the clock is important, there's no compelling reason to upgrade. I've yet to see how battery life is affected.

Signed_Cingular_CarrierLogo.sa.CAB
zoA2DP.cab
Anyone care to go down the list and describe what each customization does? I might be interested in installing some of them, and omiting others.

The bulk of the cab files do little more than set or change registry entries and provisioning settings. Very few of them actually install anything. I looked at most of them prior to building the ROM and there's nothing that should impact performance one way or the other.
i just got my 8125 so this couldn't have come at a better time. i'm having problems with active sync, though. the default shipping rom, and the aku2 from earlier are fine, but this aku2.2 is dropping the activesync after a minute or so. it's odd and frustrating as it makes it hard to get anything installed on the device.
i'll keep on working on it, it could be something dumb on my end. thanks so much for this cool stuff.
since i hadn't installed much, flashing twice in a day was no big deal. but for future reference, once i have a lot of things installed and my device customized fully, is there a way to save all of that to have it restored after a flash?
in the same vein, about how long until your next release? weeks, months? i'd hate to have this all pimped out and then start from scratch next week. but i suppose that's the price you pay to be on the bleeding edge. thanks again!

Let's see if we can knock this AS problem out quickly. So, when you establish AS and go to install an app, the AS connection drops? Does it then re-establish itself? Do you hear the "badonk" sound when it drops that indicates the usb device has disconnected? Can you replicate it with any particular app? (I'd like to try it)
For what it's worth, I've installed several things with no problem. That doesn't mean there isn't some funkiness going on though..
As far as other ROMs, I'll probably have another 1 or 2 out within a week that has CF2 and a few other things like ringers and themes.
Alright one suggestion for your next release. I don't install much of this stuff but I think we can ALL agree that setting the time zone to -5 RIGHT after windows prompts us for the time zone is annoying...stupid cingular must think EVERYONE is EAST coast. So I think that one can go eh?
Thanx; Summiter (and of course the masked man) you guys are the win!
BTW: not to state the obvious but that last CAB is A2DP... I will go buy a headset just to test it when I can find one @ a local store.
Would also liek to add that the time zone TAB is present under phoen options by default and enabled =)

i've been testing it out, and it's pretty odd. as long as i'm not installing/transfering anything the sync stays connected. but when i try to install something (navigon 5, 12mb) it will drop the connection about halfway through. same thing with mapopolis (~3mb), about halfway through then the disconnect sound effect. it won't reconnect until i unplug and replug the usb connector
i'm getting around it for right now by putting everything as cabs onto the minisd card and installing from there. it's hardly ideal, though.
what's CF2?

Hmm, that's a nasty workaround. Let me find something hugemongous to install and see what happens.
CF2 is .Net Compact Framework 2 - a set of .Net components for mobile devices. There's not a whole lot of programs out there that require it, but a popular one - WifiFoFum does. Putting it in ROM saves the ~4 megs of storage space on the device for other stuff, like selections from your illegal mp3 collection, and whatnot.
Another note is that not only is the clock back (like we all like) but the date item on the today screen is now back to taking up only 1 line.
I will be posting anything I notice else I find.
Summiter, did the Cingular rom originally include A2DP?
My headset should be in this weekend and wondering if my rom will have it or should I install yours?
Thanks for getting this out to everyone, cant wait for the customs to start flowing.

Nope, A2DP wasn't there. I added it via cab file. Works beautifully with my ht820.

Do you by any chance have your device set to go into standby after a couple minutes? (either with OS settings, or via an app like phoneAlarm)
Where can I find the cab file for AD2P ?

sure, in 3 minutes it'll turn off, but the connection dies before the screen times out.
this could be a false alarm though. after installing a handful of things and rebooting a few times, i think it might be ok. i'll definitely keep this thread updated if it goes wacky again.

Meh, I meant to get rid of that cab file....deleted. It won't be in future ROMs.
Radio Shack sells the HT820, and if you live near one that's closing, you can get it for 20-30% off. Buying online is cheapest though, but you don't get instant gratification. =)

A *LONG* WM5 ROM summary for (relative) noobs like me :)

Updates are in BLUE
Okay, time for a long post... (and please remember this is all subjective, and personal experiences, your's may be different!)
Preamble:
I've had my BA for a couple of months now, prior to that it has always been PalmO OS devices which I loved, but I wanted a phone enabled device and the Treo was just too expensive to justify it... so ebay beckoned and £100 later I was a proud owner of an O2 XDA IIs...
I'm a fairly heavy user of my PDA's I use them for all my network admin, work documentation, mail on the move, a heavily laden calendar and everything else a busy professional with a family does... with loads, and loads, of travel!!
First thoughts:
I was, to be honest, dreading the move to M$, I have always been a promoter of opensource, Palm, and anything other than the big M, but I was pleasantly surprised... with relativley little pain I got into the WM2003SE way of things, and after a quick read of the Wiki, I cooked my own ROM and had an O2 device which worked really well... I could use my BT headset as stereo headphones or a headset, while connecting to my GPS, I had my Gmail, O2, Hotmail and other accounts set up, I could chat with Skype, GoogleTalk, MSN and ICQ, I had a WiFi sniffer, and all the other trappings as well as a GPRS connection for TomTom Traffic etc... and the media capability was cool, TCPMP worked really well, and with a 1Gig SD card I could take a couple of movies/TV episodes for the journey... in short, I no longer had to worry about taking a laptop on the road.
But that wasn't enough, I was reading about these WM5 ROMS and felt that, after being pleasantly surprised with WM2003SE, it was worth a shot... over the last few days I have tried several ROM's and they all have up/down sides... what follows is a (not so brief) summary of my experiences...
I load up my BA fairly heavily, and I had specific requirements... speed, callerid, space, preferrably A2DP, and again, speed!!
TuMa 1.4 (MS BT Stack):
Some see this as the 'Daddy' of the WM5 ports and I must admit, with one major bugbear, this is an impressive ROM... it includes a lot of stuff in the build which some might prefer was left out, but for the basic user it's helpful to have some of these...
(A Really COOL Boot Logo!!)
TotalCommander
PocketRAR
Extra Games
Cyberon Voice Dialler
GB-Soft Tweak
vBar
pShutXP
IP Utilities
Pocket FTP
SMS Name Notify
ClearVue PDF
BT Headset Today Plugin
BT Stereo Control
Device Lock Today Plugin
and other bits and bobs...
This may well be considered as a 'bloated' ROM (but remember they are all installed in ROM, so no space is taken up from your 'own' space), there is an Ext_ROM option, from SD Card, in this ROM so the memory works out like this... 60MB Storage (- whatever you set up as an Ext_ROM) and 91MB Program Memory... you also get a 32MB Temp_Drive ( I assume this is like a RAMDISK?)... available on a clean install is:
Storage: 57.62MB
Program: 72.53MB
TEMP_Drive: 31.85MB
Total: 162MB (Storage & TEMP_Disk available for app install = 89.47MB)
Out of the Box:
BT: Works very well... including A2DP, I had no problems, whatsoever with this BT Stack/Setup.
WiFi: Again no problems and no reset once I'd applied the Reg Hack.
Base OS: This is where, for me, it all falls apart... even with eveything else working like a dream, the 'Pictures & Videos' app in this build just does not work, at all! This means that the CallerID functionality is kaput... I can't live with this, I love the ability to 'see' who is calling, I have many, many numbers in the work category, and being able to put a face to a number beats having only a name any day... other than that this ROM works really well, and the additional install space means I can have all my apps installed without the 'critical' low storage warning... in addition to this another glitch I have come across is 'sticky' buttons... both the D-Pad and the hardware keyboard can result in stuck keys/repeated entries... BT Voice Dialling works with Cyberon, and even better with MS Voice Command (if you hack a little), and with the A2DP profile the MS option works through the BT headset rather than the PDA speaker,,,
Ivan V4 R3 (WidComm BT Stack):
Built as a 'clean' ROM, this one really comes with no bells or whistles, included are:
BT Headset Today Plugin
Cyberon Voice Dialler (I Think!)
and apart from the Base OS stuff, that's about it!
This is a relatively speedy ROM on first impressions, but it slows dramatically down when loaded with apps... you can setup an Ext_ROM with this one, or use the full 60MB as storage... there is no Ramdisk or Temp_Drive option so you get 60MB Storage (- whatever you set up as an Ext_ROM) and 123MB Program Memory... available on a clean install is...
Storage: 57.64MB
Program: 98.40MB
Total: 156.04MB (Storage available for app install = 57.64MB)
Out of the box:
BT: works okay, although there is no A2DP functionality, but I can connect to my headset and my GPS... (which is a big thumbs-up for me). I have experienced a few of the system restarting glitches, but not the BT not restarting/dropping out with this ROM so that's an upside.
WiFi: Connectivity is okay (typical BA signal strength) and once you apply the 'ResetOnResume' Reg hack then it works very well, I have had no dropouts or non-restarts with it at all.
Base OS: A big upside for this is the Pictures & Video, it works! This means I can use the CallerID function on the WM5 dialler, which I do, extensively!!
Logout V5.4.03 (WidComm BT Stack):
Read great reviews of this on the forum, so thought I'd give it a bash... included are (if you install the Ext_ROM):
Cyberon Voice Dial
ResInfo
Task Manager
Device Lock Today Plugin
TuMa Keyboard (I think, although it looks nicer!)
Just installed this one today... first impressions weren't very good as many of the apps which were meant to be there couldn't be found on startup... then I realised I hadn't cleaned my Registry Hive before the Flash!! The speed in this one is blinding! Compared to both of the others this one is as fast as 2003SE, again, it uses a Ramdisk so you have added space for installs, and it can also use an Ext_ROM, so you have your choice... so you get 60MB Storage (- whatever you use for Ext_ROM), 93MB Program Memory and a 32MB Ramdisk... available on a clean(ish) install (I installed the MMS/Album/Voice Dial and Resinfo Cabs) is...
Storage: 52.8MB
Program: 71.9MB
RAMDISK: 31.8MB
Total: 156.6MB (Storage available for app install = 84.6MB)
Out of the Box:
BT: What there is available works fine... but no A2DP... not experienced any restart issues yet, but it's ealry days
WiFi: Again, all seems fine
Base OS: As stated above this one is blindingly fast... so much so that I actually forget it's a ported WM5 ROM at times, the Pictures & Videos app works, so that's a biggy on the plus side for me, everything seems to be ticking along quite sweetly...
UPDATE 1: Logout ROM seems to lag for a while after installs of S/W... but it settles down again, had one occurrence of s-s-s-stuttering keyboard, but nothing major, and no 3s delay on phone ring, even without reg hack
Artz (WM5_ArtZ_upgrade_WWE_1.7.1.3400_SDCard)
Iloved this ROM at first sight, it had the Stereo Audio BT profile without any updating, it was clean, smooth and fast, but then I tried using it... I'm not sure what went wrong but it just didn't 'gel':
BT: As stated this looked good from the outside, and it did recognise both my GPS and my headset, and it would connect with both, but, andit's a huge but! It wouldn't get any services from my headset on reconnection, it wouldn't recognise my headset as stereo (even though it though it would recognise the profile?) and as vor a 'normal' BT headset, it just sent my i.Tech headset haywire, beeping, pinging and ringing constantly... I couldn't stop it!
WiFi: Again, issues with this... no matter what I did, this ROM would not reconnect to my AP after a reset or power down...
Base OS: At face value this ROM was excellent, it had all I needed to start setting up my BA, and the option for Ext_ROM from an SD card is great... but with the issues above, and the spped at which it 'slowed down' with apps added it was unworkable
Obviously I will update each of these as I continue to 'tinker'... and wait for Logout 5.4.5 or TuMa 1.5, if either of these fix the little issues I've mentioned (A2DP for Logout and P&V for TuMa) then I'll be in BA WM5 Nirvana!
In summary, heres a little overview (TuMa, Ivan, Logout):
Speed: 3, 2, 1 (And then some!)
Apps: 1, 3, 2
A2DP: Y, N, N
P&V: N, Y, Y
Voice Dial: Y*, Y, Y
Available Mem: 162/89, 156/57, 156/84
*TuMa's is the only ROM I tested with MS Voice command, so BT Mic+PDA speaker for the other two, complete headset for TuMa.
So there you have it... a 'brief' insight into a few days of WM5 experience, personally I'm going to stay with Logout's ROM, the speed is unsurpassed, it has ample space for installs, I get my CallerID due to P&V working, and if there's one thing about TuMa's ROM I could do without it's the 'free' installed apps... I don't use TtlCmd, I don't use Pocket FTP and I don't use Pocket RAR (Resco Explorer covers those 3 and then some), I use Tweaks2k2 to apply most of my hacks, so the GB-Soft Tweak is mostly redundant, and I use Wisbar instead of vBar... but it's a personal preference thing... in the end, it's up to you... (I now use Total Commander loads Thx TuMa)
I'll update this as I try other ROM's or find other benefits/problems/fixes...
*** See my other post in this thread dated 23/06/06 for other issues which I have come across with WM5...***
Logout 5.4.05
I had high hopes for this ROM, 5.4.03 was nearly there, and built on the best of TuMa and Ivan's ROM's...
Out of the Box
An incredibly fast ROM, by far the fastest in basic form compared to all the others available... there are many little tweaks in the software and add-ons included as standard which are useful, such as the SMS Alert Fix etc. It's up to you to make the Ext_ROM, but this is good for 'tweakers' as you can build it to your liking.
BT: Basically, a nightmare! I believe this uses the WidComm stack and as such I can't get the A2DP to work, yes it recognises my Headset, and yes it says there is a 'Wireless Stereo' capability, but when you try to enable that profile it says 'No Device Found'... in addition, and I'm not sure if this is due to the BT switching off fix, my device was switching on at least once every two minutes!!
WiFi: I didn't get round to test this for the reason above, and also the power up issue causing me major headaches.
Issues: I had too many issues with this ROM to detail them all, a short list would be:
No A2DP
Random Power Ons
Software Not Installing Correctly
Software Not Removing Correctly
Software Not Running (Tweaks2K2, WiFiFoFum and others)
BT Dropping Out (While Powered Up)
OS Locks Out (Random, No Common Factor)
And the speed once a few 'heavy' apps are installed deteriorates dramatically...
I have now resorted to TuMa 1.4... I know I have stated previously that I couldn't use it, but I have found a workaround to the Caller ID issue, and the BT works very well (including A2DP), with both 1.13 and 1.15 Radio ROM's, and I have not experienced one unwanted power up, and the BT has stayed on for ages regardless, in addition as long as I don't install WisBar the speed of this ROM beats all the others hands down once all my other apps are loaded. Also, I have had the BA on for 7 hours now, using bluetooth for 1 hour solid in the gym for music, making several calls, setting up my software etc and the battery is still at 75%... not bad at all in my books.
As I said earlier, bring on TuMa 1.5!
Now this is useful! Thanks for sharing and I give my thumbs up for updating the first post as you go on trying.
I'm very happy to read your review.
I'm surprised you did not mention the battery drain (false indications that your battery is dead, when in fact it is not) with TuMa 1.4
Great Work!!!!
G8 work. Good detailed description which i am sure a lot of people will appreciate. i
Logout Rom = Speaker phone icon does not disappear after call
WMP 10 crackling noise for first 30 -60 sec of song
@snapper - Can't say I noticed it, but then again, whenever I sit down for more than 30mins, my brick goes on to power anyhow...
Why does everybody forget about ArtZ's ROM? :/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=48215
Not forgotten, just not used,,,
If you read the last couple of para's I do state that I'll get round to Artz's and update the post...
Yup, missed that (was in hurry, checked only the explicitly enumerated ROMs :| )
The Artz of ROM's
Hmm, d/l'ing this one now... expect an update over the next day ot two... encountered a few 'glitches' with the Logout ROM tday, nothing too major, but enough to get my goat!
Is there any reason why, with certain ROM's, certain apps decide my BA is a VGA device? This has cased me no end of trouble today, and I can't for the life of me, work out the reason...
Anyway, expecting good things from the Artz ROM, just read the forum a few mins ago and notice it's a 'clean' ROM with the BT stack! Could be I get my wishlist... let's just see if P&V works...
Mad props for a very well written article.
I've gone down the wm5 road the last week as well. I tried tuma 1.3, tuma 1.4, ivan, and now i'm on logout. I was wondering how extensively you tested the wifi? I have had problems with it on all the roms.
The issue happens when wifi is ON and the device shuts off after 1 minute. Then the device powers back up when i press the power button and the wifi will continually try to reconnect to the AP that it was just on but will never make a connection. Clearing the settings on the connection doesn't work and it inhibits the ability of the device to detect any new networks.
I was wondering if you had any problems like this and if resetonresume fixes this?
Also i'm a little confused about the location of the storage memory and the programs memory in the file structure of wm5. Could someone explain this or send me in the right direction? (aka. search terms or thread link)

I had this problem on my BA with 03se just a couple days ago so I don't think its related to just 05. I used the vx ip utility to release and renew the IP and I believe that fixed it.. I think it has something to do with the DHCP reservation
Great guide, very handy for begginers. Should be sticked

Guess its a hardware issue! again, thats just a guess

Great info!
This is great info and was very useful to me. I am on WM2003 and have not yet upgraded. With 2003, my only issues are that MS voice command won't work via the BT headset, the 80211b wireless requires a reboot to turn on and off, and the phone requires a reboot perhaps once a week. Otherwise it works well and I want my 2005 to be equal or better. I thin TuMA 1.5 will be it.
Has anyone actually got a working MMS Client primarily for Logout's new ROM
WiFi Issues...
@ will...
Yes, I noticed on first flashing that, even though I had entered the settings for my AP, when the system resumed then it would not reconect, after using the resetonresume reg hack all was well...
I also noticed this on Artz's ROM which I will be adding to my first post over the next day or two, as well as a few other points/comparisons...
All I will say at the moment is that all has not been a bed of roses in my WM5 world and backward steps may be ahead... (unless Logout 5.4.0.5 or TuMa 1.5 are here soon... and they deliver on our expectations!!)
Tuma / Logout roms
sounds to me that you will be heading back to wm2003. main reason for saying this is how you use your pda. Your demands are high (as they should be) and you use your pda very heavily (wifi, bluetooth etc) hence functionality and speed are your highest priorities.
having said all this i think and hope tuma/logouts new roms will hit the spot (i have faith).
FYI just upgraded to 1.15 radio and the sound quality is good!!!!!!
Issues, concerns and resolutions...
Well, the first post will be updated later today, but just as a heads up, I experienced BT issues with all ROM's except the TuMa 1.4, and various other 'niggles'... issues which I couldn't live with unfortunately:
BT: I like the A2DP functionality, I use GPS heavily and need them to work every time, with the other 3 ROM's I've tried I experienced various problems such as BT not reconnecting to paired devices, BT connecting but causing mayhem with my headset (in Artz' update later), crackly sound, dropouts, no phone, no voice dial, ad infinitum...
WiFi: This worked fairly well in all the ROMs, I managed to get all 4 tested to reconnect after standby/soft reset/battery change etc.
Battery: The experiences I had with battery life weren't actually that bad, yes it was heavier than 2003SE, but that's to be expected... my main issue was that on a couple of the ROM's I experienced the 'no Radio ROM' syndrome after a battery change, not major, but a pain in the butt anyway!
Usage: These are all ROM's that are designed for 'newer' machines at their hearts, and as such, as soon as you load up some heavy apps the whole system starts to drag, I cannot afford to wait over 1 minute for my PDA to boot after soft reset, or 30 secs for an app to open... and I certainly don't like it to be 'hit or miss' if an app opens when I ask it to!
Summary: I really love the WM5 interface, the smoother way that notifications are dealt with, the 'soft-menu' buttons are a godsend, the built in GPS management, and any of the other 'tweaks' MS have included make it a PDA users dream, unfortunately, at the moment it's just that, a dream... the BA is not 'Designed for Windows Mobile 5' and until TuMa, Logout, or Artz [I believe Ivan has left for a new device ] manage to get it 'right' (and major kudos to them all for their perseverence in what must be a most frustrating endeavour) I, as an everyday, heavy, PDA user will remain with WM2003SE... I'm not happy about it, but needs must

Just FYI that is incorrect, Artz and Ivan's ROMS are based on an actual BA BEAT build of WM5 that was made by microsoft, that has been patched and edited with later versions of the components, whereas TuMa and Logout's Rom are based on a Wizard ROM.

Read up, Basically every WM2003SE device has a WM5 Version made for it, however the operators in thier infinate wisdom decided that they didnt want people having WM5 on thier 'old' phones and would rather that people brought new ones.

I stand corrected... I was under the impression that all the ROM's were 'ported' from different devices, I believe that was the case originally wasn't it?

Read my post!! WM5 wasn't released when the BA came out, so it was built around WM2003SE, the fact that a ROM became available, albeit not publicly, doesn't mean they redesigned the handset!

A call to action for all U.S. T-Mobile Wing users.

Hello fellow Wing users. I'm willing to bet that if you're reading this you're probably a little frustrated with your phone's lack of performance. The reason why I'm starting this post is to try and gather in one central location all the improvements that we as local community would like to see happend for the Wing. The idea is for you to complete this sentence:
"The T-Mobile Wing would be a better phone if..."
I have already contacted T-Mobile's customer service and gave them my suggestions, but I thought it might be a good idea to see what other users are looking for/need. Any idea is a valid idea, and after a month I'll draft a letter and we can all send it to customer service. And if we see more things that need to be added we can send it monthly with new updates. Sound good?
So this is what we have so far:
1. [email protected]
2. Official ROM
3. non-Buggy My Favs Program
4. Screen Lock w/Button Lock even when an incoming call comes in
I really love my wing.
The T-Mobile Wing would be a better pda if it had 3G, so i don't have to buy a new phone when t-mo's 3G networks comes out.
I'd love my wing as well. The only thing I can think of that I'd love to see is UMA support for [email protected] Not really a big issue for me, as I have no signal issues at home, but that's about it.
How bout a list of all the suggestions in the first post. The main thing I'm waiting for is a release of the official rom to fall back on.
I'm having email issues. My wife and I can not get the send/receive function to work with my home email accounts (Cox Communications). I'm using the Wing and she's on the Dash, both using WM6. We didn't have this problem with WM5 so what's the deal?
This phone would be better if I could get an answer from Tech support why I'm having this problem.
Updated rom with less memory leaks.
Hotspot @ Home
That's all I can imagine for right now. Wing's a pretty all-in-one device.
For developers:
Would love TOUCHFLO to be implemented into a rom.
Rom's with freed up memory
Less customization
Faster and more stable.
suggestions
for now, I guess these will be the 2 main things
1. A small-sized rom, with all t-mobile apps as optional installs
2. An actual RUU rom file for us all upgraders...

Like a T-Mobile Kitchen? That would be cool
Here here! I totally agree.
Here here! I totally agree.
Not sure if these are really T-Mobile's issues or WM6 issues or HTC issues, but ...
Alarms are Unreliable
...If I set an alarm, I can NOT be confident that it will sound. The WM6 alarms worked fine the first time I set it active. A day alter I changed the alarm time and alarm sound, and the alarm hasn't worked correctly since. I eventually installed a 3rd party alarm clock, and deactivated the WM6 alarms. The 3rd party one worked OK for a week, then it wouldn't work either! It only seems to work when the phone is On, and set to stay on (plugged in). If the phone goes into suspend mode over night, the alarm doesn't seem to play the alarm sound. It does wake up the device, and does flash the light, but no sound!
Volume Up/Down Buttons:
...Seems like the hardware volume buttons (which are my first choice for volume control) do not adjust volume for most 3rd party applications. In fact every 3rd party app that I've installed starts with sound blaring, and no WM6 volume control seems to control the volume. Only after entering the game, going to the game settings, and editing the game volume controls (if there are any!) can I change the volume. Why doesn't the hardware volume control actually control the speaker volume?
Listen to Music & Vibrate Mode:
...Seems like I can't set my phone to vibrate (through the quick ring/vibrate phone mode switching tool) and have volume for my music. When I set it to vibrate, the volume is set to 0. When I trun the volume up for my music, the ringer switches from vibrate to ring.
NOTE: I really wonder if all these sound issues are related ... ? It seems to me that there are a variety of volume settings, and a variety of controls to adjust these volume settings. Ringer volume, in call volume, speaker volume. , mute/vibrate mode. There is the hardware button, there is a software volume slider, many apps have an additional volume sliders. It seems like some *other* internal volume setting is getting adjusted (other than the main volume controls) and all programs (not the phone or ringer) are affected by this.
Locked Screen with Call:
...With the screen lock enabled, and the phone in suspended mode, an incoming call wakes up the phone and activates the two phone buttons. Every time the incoming call is answered as I am pulling the phone from the phone case ... !! This really sucks because I don't want to have to answer every call. If I don't remove the phone from the case, the calls are still answered just by the pressure of the case on those buttons.
Music Player Library:
...The Windows Media player Library automatically loads up all sorts of ringtones and WM6 sound files (that are not in My Music or My Videos folders)?? There is seemingly no settings to prevent this? manually removing them asks you to really delete the file (dangerous), and has to be repeated every time you reload the Library? I ended up using a new media player that has more settings and isn't so stupid.
User Modes: (not an issue, but a desired feature)
...I have found the need for 'usage modes' for the phone. I mean things like 'phone mode', 'internet mode', 'music/movie player mode'. Somethng that would enable the appropriate device settings to facilitate using some program without the screen turning off, or auto-suspending.
...I know you can manually go through all your settings and enable/disable the auto-suspend, change the backlight, change the volume/ring type, etc. in order to use the Wing as an MP3 player, phone, or news reader ... but different usage modes would seemingly be a *must have* for anyone who really uses these different functionalities one after the next.
... for example, as an MP3 player I want the device to stay on (no auto-suspend), the back light off after 30 sec, and vibrate only ringer, and music volume adjustable (only makes sense). BUT if I get an incoming call, I don't want the backlight shutting off after 30 seconds anymore! OR if I close the MP3 player and want to read my email or RSS news feeds, then I want the ringer back on, the device to auto-suspend after 5 minutes, and the backlight to stay on that long too.
...It is time consuming to be constantly swapping settings back and forth, trying to remember what needs to be changed. I feel like I spend more time tinkering with settings then actually getting good use out of the Wing. Sometimes I only have 5 minutes to read news or play a quick Sudoku game, and don't want half that time wasted futzing with settings.
...Maybe there is 3rd party software for this, but I haven't found any as of yet.
Business Contact Manager Pocket PC / Contacts Button on TMobile Wing
Thanks for this thread. I think we should also post replies when members post questions about their needs....
I like my Wing and I am trying to keep it clean - minimal software. Having said that there are some things I would like to remove / change....
I have installed business contact manager pocket pc - which sync's with my business contacts in Outlook. The problem I have is that one of the Today screen soft button (just above the ok button) points to "contacts" and not business contacts. I am wondering if anybody knows how to get this button to point to the business contacts. I do not want to install new software - I think this is a registry edit type fix. Any help will be appreciated.
I would also like to see a new forum category for all posts regarding Wing and/or WM6 professional. A lot of the threads deal with older OS's and I am concerned to install software written for WM5 and older. Also you find WM6 posts buried under different devices, etc...
This is the only way I know how . . .

See attatched and it's the 'official' T-Mobile applet so . . . . .
Don't hold your breath for T-mobile 3G . They only have a little bit in Manhattan (apparently) and they were saying early this year that it would be rolled out in August and 1 week away and nothing so far

RUU updater
T-Mobile Wing would be a better phone if they released the RUU updater with the stock version of the ROM that comes on the Wing!!
When do they plan on doing that?
I'd mainly like to see a faster CPU (preferably keeping the dual core, so the radio stuff is independant) and more onboard RAM/ROM space.
Then, there is the feature T-Mobile announced recently -- a special box that goes onto people's home LANs, where people can make voice over IP calls, and have it automatically handoff to and from the cellular network. Calls made on the wireless at home are free, even if the call gets handed to the cell network.
Of course, I'd like to see a RUU ROM file, as well as a "bare/clean" ROM from TMO, providing pretty much WM6, and the basic T-Mobile network customizations, as a starting base to work from.
How about having the extra storage space built in to the phone instead of having to buy an sd card?
How about [email protected] for the Wing?
Now here's a GREAT Idea! Hotspot @home for the Wing - god knows it'd take little to no-effort for them to allow/enable us to utilize this . . . . .
My wife switched over to T-Mobile cuz she wanted the Sidekick (bleh) so she offered to get me the Wing...I really didn't like how slow and sloppy the phone's interface is. Still don't like how slow it is but I've warmed up to the phone since it's so handy. But I do wish that the apps where not so buggy and was more customizalbe. Like customizing the homepage to have using only icons for certain things or framing some parts of the homepage so that you can view different info without having to leave the homepage and watch my phone akwardly blink to the next screen.

That is an issue with Cox. Recently alot of ISP's have locked their outgoing email to be only able to send from approved IPs. T-Mobile right now is working on getting added to those. Dont worry about it being 6.0, that was just a coincidence.

The ITCs ban on 3g chips is probably the real culprit behind the 3g launch delay. Why launch 3g when you cant even get any 3g phones imported??
!st letter going out on Friday
