WM5: TuMa 1.3 (MS BT Stack) with radio 1.15.
In terms of WM2003SE: Orange 1.31, BT3500 and radio 1.15.

All respect to KTamas (551 posts don't write themselves), but I have to disagree. From what I've seen, radio 1.15 has problems with dropping calls and slow response from the phone application. Midget_1990 suggested I downgrade from 1.15 to 1.13 and I've seen a marked improvement since.
Likewise TuMa1.3, while a huge achievement from its author Tuatara, is now outdated by Logout and Ivan's latest ROMs. Both of them are faster and more stable than TuMa 1.3.
Logout is based on the fast, but flawed TuMa 1.4, with a lot of fixes. It's really good at multimedia - I get the best framerate in pocket media player with this ROM, but it seems to self-destruct after 2 weeks of heavy use. I've had to rebuild it after some pretty strange situations where the camera suddenly stopped working, phone app refused to launch, and the messaging app went crazy, opening and closing windows until killed manually.
TuMa 1.5 remains everyone's great hope for the perfect WM5 ROM, but it's not in a state to be released yet. In the meanwhile I use Ivan v4r3. It gives the fastest UI response, but it plays movie files less well than Logout. Above all, it's very stable if treated with care - usually needs rebuilding once a month or so.

Is the periodic rebuilding required on all WM5 roms? I know the windows xp "half-life" is about 18 months (if you look after it!), but I didn't realise that the phones picked up as much cruft as well.

i find between 2-8 weeks depending on what rom i'm running, note though that this is not just WM5, i also had to do this often in 2003se to keep the speed how it should be.

I thought that this could be a problem... I think about downgrading Radio to 1.13.
And what about ROM? Orange 1.31 is the only suggestion? Any other voices? If not, I think the only option will be to put into my baby that ROM...
Greets,
Robert

keep the 1.42 os rom, cook your own extrom, or leave as is, and use 1.13 radio. best wm2003se combi IMHO

Radio 1.13 is not as loud as 1.15.
If you use Bluetooth Headset, your friends will not hear your voice.
I've tried it with 3 Bluetooths.
But with 1.15,the volume is loud and clear.

I'm planning to buy BT headset. So far 1.13 is good enough.

Upgrade 1.42 and ext. rom problem

I upgraded my device to 1.42 eng. but after finished, extended rom files are not installing, device is stopping . Then when i try to install them manuel not working can somene help me
I tested the 1.42 NL version and it worked pretty much ok. Try maybe to upgrade again. I have the Pda2k and I am back to the I-mate 1.40 firmware. I think something went wrong when you updated. Just do it again - it should work.
Posting from the PDA2K.
downgrade
why did you go back to 1.40 from 1.42?
obiesoft:
I didn't like the T-mobile ExtRom and I didn't know how to write to it at the moment.
Also, I thought that the phone app is a bit slow (and I hated the flat skin).
Meanwhile, I got the xdatools and I edited the extrom.
The I-Mate extrom has the autosetup, no config.txt needed. It works pretty well with the 1.13 radio.
Though, I have some problems with the BT and a Motorola HS805 headset. It's crackling all the time. But I think that there's no solution for this problem.
RELOAD, have you flashed again? Did you solve the problem?
1.42
I apologize for not replying earlier. I switched from WM5 to the 1.42 Rom and i like it so far. It is so much faster and responsive compared to WM5, keyboard works well and bluetooth is ok. I also get the Crackling noise, i use HBH 300. I have been seeing threads about an I mate Bluetooth fix but all the links to it are broken, so i guess that is what we need now. Until i test it, i will not know. I understand what you mean by the flat look, WM5 looks better but it is not as good as WM2003 for regular use, as for looks, just switch up themse.
obiesoft
I'm sorry for the delayed answer, but I'm not always on the forums...
I only heard about an I-mate patch, but if you mean this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=14277, it's old (2004) and I've seen only a few people asking for the files.
I am now running the i-mate last rom with 1.13 radio and BT 3900. The extended rom contains a cab called BTsearchTime.sa.cab.
I'm not sure about it does, but I'm sure that it's already posted on the forums or on the ftp .
About WM5, I read many threads where people complaint about the speed. I decided not to try it, instead I set my HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cachesize to 4096, and I installed all the programs in the storage card (1 GB).
The performance was really boosted, at the expense of 4 MB of memory, but I have plenty of it, because I don't have to share too much with the storage.
I also use SPBPocketPlus 3, but just for the Closing App, Safe Mode, and rotation shortcuts. Otherwise, SPB Plus makes the PDA unusable - it consumes many resources. Pocket Hack master provides me the overclok/underclok possibilities, so, if I use the BA only as a phone, I keep it at 199 MHz.
Moderator: I'm not sure if this fits here, but... please don't kill me!

What was your main reason for upgrading to WM5?

i upgraded to wm5 via tuma v1.3 and it's very slow compared to wm2003. tolerable i guess, but slow. I noticed it seems to have just as many wifi issues as wm2003 and honestly it doesn't look like much has changed.
There are a few nice things about it. Although, since i rely heavily on the wifi, for internet and remote dekstop, I'm thinking of going back to wm2003.
So my question is what are the main reasons you upgraded to wm5?
Hasn't it been discussed plenty-o-times?
the only thing i can find is wm5 = stable, slow and wm3 = stable, fast. But with all the problems of these custom roms i can't seem to figure out how it's more stable.
Well, the main reason of my upgrade was the persistant storage feature, really important for me!
willpower, did you extensively test WM5? I've upgraded to WM5 after having my BA for three days, and I'm not going to downgrade.
I'm with mandelbort, I'm about to go abroad for a couple of years and I may find myself far from power now and then. Getting a hard-reset when the battery died was always crazy in my mind.
The main reason why I'm staying (despite several problems) is the WAY better user interface. Simple things like notifications are light years ahead of WM2003 in terms of how you interact with them.
I started out on a Smartphone which has a great UI. Going to WM2003 was a step back, things like contacts and messaging lacked simple options like "reply", "call", "send text". Now on WM5 it's a lot more consistent and the context menus display useful options.
I agree with Fraser about the UI enchasements, but the 2 main reasons for me to upgrade to WM5 were Persistant Storage and improved stability, i have not reset my BA from more than a month (just once to install ivans latest rom)
Honestly, if it wasn't for persistant storage, I wouldn't be using WM5. But I'm the forgetful type, and it was a pain when I accidentaly let my Blue Angel run out of batteries and then had to restore my backups.
The slowness doesn't really bother me that much either. The first Blue Angel WM5 roms were much slower. The guys researching and developing editted roms are doing an excellent job.

Tuma 1.3 is one of the slowest WM5 roms, this was fixed in 1.4 but that also contains many bugs, so either wait for 1.5 (stable + fast) or try another WM5 version like logouts or Ivans, both of which are much faster.
Why does everyone forget about ArtZ's ROMs?
because i've never heard of it , whats it like/based on?

Three days? Doesn't sound like you tested wm3 too extensively
Seriously, when i first asked the question i'd only had the upgrade on their for a couple of days. I've pretty well become used to the speed issue. I'm about to install and try out the other versions of the roms tonight. it's nice to know that i can look forward to an increase in speed. I have noticed things like the notifications working much better. But i still have a couple of questions if i may:
1. The wifi doesn't want to connect to a secured network until after a hard reset. If i take the enryption off the router then it will connect after a soft reset.
[baground info] I was using wm3 with radio 1.12 and having similar connection issues. Then i upgraded to radio 1.15 and had a magnificent increase in the wifi stabiliy. It would always see new connections quickly and never had a problem refreshing or switching. until tuma v1.3 wm5.
Is this a covered issue? i've read alot but haven't found exactly what i need.
2. what is this about persistant storage? From what i've gathered wm5 doesn't loose all your settings and ?more? when the battery drains? I haven't searched yet, because i have to run, but i'll read up on that when i get back.
thanks!
ArtZ's ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=48215
I use the absolutely-first version with some tweaks In the beginning I've tested Ivan's ROM, but the video recording did not work. I did not try TuMa, cause people kept complaining about its speed (waiting for 1.5, which is supposed to be fast and stable). In ArtZ's ROM everything seems to be working just fine
willpower102 - during those three days I had 2 hard-resets (with battery fully charged) :| The MMS function did not work at all (I was unable to create MMS messages), no incomming calls were signaled (0 info on the phone, as if noone tried calling) :| . With WM5 I can do/receive calls, use MMSes, use GPRS, etc
Yes, I agree that WM5 is slow comparing to 2k3SE (my friend uses it in his BA and he does not complain; I've been playing with his unit alot - he made me get myself one ), but the benefits are quite significant (for me at least - see beginning of my post).
And regarding the 'persistent storage' - nothing is lost when the battery dies NOTHING (well, except the time settings when you keep the battery dead for too long )

Newbie......want most stable 2003SE for QTEK 9090

At the moment I hate my 1 week old QTEK 9090.
To enable GPRS I normally have to reboot.
Sometimes to get Wifi and BT working I have to reboot.
GPRS drops out during a phone call
Sometimes I have to reboot when there is no sound at all on the device. Just no sound at all.
I have had it a week. Probably had to reboot it at least 3 times a day and the reboot is LONG!
Wow such a good concept let down by a HUGE number of bugs
What version rom and radio does your 9090 use? (start menu>settings>device information)
check here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Upgrades
for latest official rom release by your phones manufacturer. Possibly an upgrade is beneficial! Either that, or your phone may have hardware issues. Check your service provider for repair/rma services.
Good luck!
Thanks for that.
I will check. One issue I have a work around for....
I only lose sound when I close down Windows Media Player before I stop the music. Stop it first and then close and all is fine. That is a start.
I wish the ROM upgrades were simpler like on my Treo 650.....upgrade does a backup, flashes the new ROM and then brings back the data....
I found my device and rom on that link ta. So does that mean I have the latets for my device....
This is exactly my 9090:
Qtek WWE OP ID 1.40.00 1.40.147 1.12.00
Protocol version 1337.42
So I must have the latest ROM for my device...ripper.
Rom
Yeah you have the latest rom. when i 1st got my qtek i had some strange issues as well. what i ended up doing was to install a different rom (downgrade) and then install back to my rom (latest version). Hey presto my pda was running much smother.
Take your time to read all the info on the forum and most of all read wiki!! It takes some time to get used to wm2003se if your switching from palm. Have fun!!!
Thanks.
I have used many PPC devices as well. Last one was AXIM X50V. Before that was IPAQ 2210, IPAQ 1930.......
From the 2210 onwards everything was nice and stable.
Just this device.....!!
If I could get it to reliably start up GPRS and wireless every time I would be fine. BT is not such an issue.
Now I have solved my sound problem that is excellent.
good bye wm2003se
I will be really honest with you!!! when i was using my pda with wm2003se i had to soft reset my device 5-6 times a day....wifi being the biggest problem. needles to say it was critical to have a good backup software (Sprite). after being really frustrated i found this site....(thanks god)....know i use wm5 and guess what after 8 weeks i have not had to soft reset my device once. wm5 at the moment is not perfect but for me its stable and quick enough.
Cool....so moving my QTEK 9090 to WM5 what should I look out for? What are the issues? Will I get anything else? Lose anything?
Stability is 100% key for, but in terms of features, WM2003SE has everything i need. It just doesn't work all of the time.
What WM5 ROM do you recommend?
Oops I see Ivan....got a link?
So what is the best procedure to do the backup?
Can I easily go back to the original ROM?
Ivan 4.3
it really depends how you use your pda and what kind of functionality you want. for me speed and stability are essential. i dont use blue tooth to much just to transfer data...(no headset). as all users of wm5 will tell you there are pros and cons with each wm5 rom. my advice is to read the forums and pick a version that best suits your needs. in any case you will have to do some hacks to really bring the best out of your device on wm5. see my sig for what i have installed.
forgot to answer your question. to downgrade your device is much easier than to upgrade. before you go down this road please READ wiki carefully!!!

The most stable WM5 ROM

I have been reading many of the forums around here and they say that all the new ROMs are unstable and for "testing" only. I realize we are in uncharted waters here since the BA doesn't really have a WM5 upgrade but I would just like to know... of all the WM5 ROMs out there, which one is the most stable? Nevermind if the ROM is old or outdated or if it has AKU 2.3 or not. I just want a WM5 ROM that has the least amount of bugs.
Ivan probably provided the most stable rom so far, u can search thru the forum or jump onto the ftp and grab his latest rom.
base on Ivan's rom, midget has incorporte the RAMDisk into the rom.
i suggest u grab midget's rom though.
imatrix
Ivan but WM2003 better
I would vote for Ivan's latest ROM. It was the last WM5 rom I used before I decided to ditch and go back to WM2003 for good. I have to tell you, the speed alone is worth downgrading back to WM2003. Sending text messages with WM5 was an absolute nightmare, bootup was slow, everything was just generally less responsive which frustrates me when I'm in a hurry. I just didn't see the benefits I was expecting, most of my software works better and faster with WM2003 anyway. But my vote goes to Ivan's since it was the most stable ROM I found (out of Tuma's, Logout's and Ivan's) Peace.

this man is correct, all progs and stacks will run faster on 2003se. I've been testing a lot doing some benchmarks and well I believe that the ivan 32mb set or 64mb are the fastest.
Let's see this infamous aku 3.0 though, Windows Mobile 5 is more than possible on this device hardware wise.
when u say ivans rom is it the latest v1.2 with 32 ramdisk
till now i prefer logout
ftp://xda:[email protected]_Updates/Logout/Logout_WM2K5_5.4.03_HN.rar
in term of speed, Logout's rom is the fastest, but from time to time, there are problems with it, the phone function is dead gotta hard reset to fix it, certain errors keep poping up and not to mention sometimes it lose wireless configuration.
In terms of speed? Logout's is ridiculously slow on my sx66 compared to ivan w/ramdisk 1.2 or helmi's aku 2.3 beta.
I can't say anything about the others, as I have only used Helmi.
What can I say? I am impressed.
1) Boots much faster than 2003SE
2) I haven't noticed any slowdown. the machine seems responsive enough for me.
3) GPRS autoconnects when an app needs it. It needed manual connection on 2003SE, and more often than not also needed a reboot to work
4) Things seem to 'just work' less soft resets overall.
Caveats:
1) havent tested wifi
2) havent tested bluetooth
3) havent tested using the phone as a modem, for a computer to browse using GPRS
I am enjoying my WM5 time so far.
Another Runner...
Interestingly I had found both Ivan w/RAMDisk and helmi-c's AKu 2.3 ROM's to be really good... and then after a faux pas in my hacking I broke helmi's so tried Midget_1990's AKU 2.3 v1.1... it has no RAMDisk, however I am sure it could be added...
But it is by far the most stable WM5 ROM I have used to date... it's been installed since Friday (Ithink, maybe Thursday?) I've had no freezez, no hangs, Wifi workds, MSN works, GPRS works... the speed is up there with the best of them, I've installed all sorts on it, including TomTom 5.21, and GPStoGoogleEarth and they both work faster than on a stock WM2003SE build... SPB Diary, Time Weather and Backup run smoothly, Eten Pack installs with no issues as does the Eten Dialler and various other bits 'n' bobs... more than happy, and I think I'll stick with it until he either releaases a new 2.3 (or even 3.0) version or I can find the time to build my own!!
Midget 1.2 is on it's way, if i can get it finished then tonight, if not next weekend when i'm back from work. It will be aku 2.3 as aku 3 is really not worth bothering with atm.

I know what you mean about AKU 3.0... I can't even get the display right... seems to be running at the wrong display mode (like win98 at 8bit!!), but I am impressed with the initial spped of the ROM, once I can get the display fixed I think I'll play with it for a bit and see what I can get to work with it...
Will your 1.2 have a RAMDisk?

In regards to that, your 1.1 ROM clicks a lot on WMP (works okay on TCPMP though) and even with the reg entry for the Audio Priority I can't get rid of it, is there anything other than the WaveDev Priority Reg Entry I could try?
As for the display thing in AKU3.0... was it okay for you out of the box (just using the dev tools from the site)? Or did you have to work on anything, I've flashed it twice now and have had no luck... off to try a third time

T-Mobile Wing radio performance

I am the not so proud owner of a Wizard but have the opportunity of moving to a Wing. I love my wizard with the exception of the radio performance, poor reception, missed calls and vanishing text messages which are all part of the deal. So those of you who have a Wing, is the radio any good?
Radio is slightly better than the MDA, IMO. BT radio is definitely better. WM6 is sweet, and stable.... speed and battery are fine overclocked at 247. The BT stack is waaaay better for A2DP.
The big problem is program memory... something around 15MB before plug-ins, and with a medium-bad leak. No one has real good answers yet, and we are all DESPARATELY waiting for custom ROMS! In the meantime, I've recommended using Oxios to clear memory as often as possible, and soft resets at least once a day.
It's really a great device, except for the memory problem. If you do get one, make sure to check at HoFo as to the best purchase deal.
-Richard
Well, the reason why you're missing so many calls is because your Radio is 2.61. That for whatever reason, that "improved" radio sucks in Southern California. If I remember correctly, that was a German radio. The Wing has an upgraded radio, but I haven't tried it in areas I know are sketchy. But all in all, except for the huge loss of RAM due to God only knows (I don't run My Favs) it seems to be a pretty stable phone, but I've only had it for less than a week.
Thanks falconeyez, I have actually been running 2.69 for the past few days but it is as bad or worse than 2.61. I have jsut downloaded 2.40 from the FTP to try that but I have just about given up hope of any radio rom working in the Wizard. If the Wing has a suitable replacement then I will make the change as the rest of the phone appears to be the same as a Wizard

No problem, that's what the boards are for. When I was using the wizard I kept my radio at 2.25 (2.26?) and that consistently gave me the best results.

/agree 100% with everything said here.
As a result I've been playing with customizing my own rom (removing programs adding in - etc) and what I've come up with is a cross between the Touch and the Iphone - I use the iLock and the iContacts, and all of the other themes and apps from the Touch as posted in the Touch for Wizard thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311225)
Now my problem is: I want to remove the annoying taskbar that holds the battery status (OEM) and etc on the bottom because I do not need it anymore. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this?
